We’re Layo Philanthropic Partners. We’re a philanthropic advisory group that helps people of color create a Joy-Based Giving Strategy and connects them to grassroots and nonprofit organizations committed to making an impact and creating equity and prosperity for all.
We created this workbook to aid you in the first steps of your journey as a philanthropist. Use it as your guide through your planning and our Philanthropy 101 Workshop.
The best journeys start with intention. Use this space to reflect on your journey as a philanthropist and your current experiences.
Q1 What would you give freely of yourself simply because it creates joy for you and others?
Q2 What motivates you to begin this philanthropic journey?
There will always be a need for charitable giving , when we feel a connection to an organization or cause, the moment when disaster strikes and emergency measures are necessary, or to fulfill our duty to a fundraiser or campaign effort. However, with philanthropy, we’re building longterm investment into a cause or organization that leads to sustainable impact and change. We build deeper connections, we prepare for and prevent disaster, and become leaders of change. The best philanthropists have built a strategy.
In this exercise, we want you to reflect on where you’ve given charitably in the past and may still continue to in the Charitable Giving Column. In the Philanthropic column, we want you to write the areas where you’d like to see long-term change or build a commitment. If you’re already committed to a cause, write them below.

Consider the scale of impact you can have with a strategic partner helping you reach your goals. Take a few moments to dream up the local, national, and global impact you plan to have through your philanthropic work.
As you build out your philanthropic strategy, you’ll want a few people by your side. We recommend consulting with a tax advisor or Certified Public Accountant, a Trust & Estates Attorney, and your immediate family.
This quick list can help you take the next steps in connecting with them as we build your strategy. If you don’t currently have a team, we can take the next steps to refer you.
We’ll work with you to clarify your goals, and motivations, and build a comprehensive philanthropic joy-based strategy that creates the impact you want to see in the world and a long-lasting legacy.
Q3
Let’s consider the impact that generosity can have on ourselves and others. With every JoyBased Giving Strategy, we take the time to consider your personal story and the hope for your legacy. In this exercise, consider a moment when someone’s generosity impacted your life in a positive matter. Subsequently, consider what the experience of generosity is like for you.
Q4
Describe a moment of generosity and the impact that it had on your life.
What will your impact be?
What causes are you committed to?
