Clothes Make the Man

South Shore Arts presents Uniforms, Outfits and Accessories: Photographs by Joel DeGrand, February 12 through April 8, 2012, in the gallery at The Center for Visual and Performing Arts. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, February 12, from 1-3pm.

For the past three years, Joel DeGrand has been documenting and examining the peculiarities and complexities of what people wear. The project titled Uniforms, Outfits and Accessories explores the symbolism that is inherent in what we choose to wear and how this affects and defines our cultural identity. DeGrand believes that it is important historically to define our cultural identity visually. The cultural identity presented in these photos acts as a reminder, but also as an educational tool, which has the ability to break down prejudices and enlighten senses to think about the past and its relationship to the future.

DeGrand makes the photographs in Uniforms, Outfits and Accessories life-size in order to better represent the importance of apparel and allow the viewer to confront the subject matter with a greater sense of reality and cultural identity. He feels that the importance of the project has much to do with the time frame in which it was completed.

Photographs have a unique characteristic of capturing the moment but also tell a story years later when things have evolved or morphed into something else.

In 1980, DeGrand was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a photographic survey of Pittsburgh. The project expanded into a 10-year photo documentary of Pittsburgh’s evolution from an industrial center into an economically diverse city. Many of the photographs taken during this time were of people wearing clothes that defined the times and symbolized what they did at work and play.

The NEA project led DeGrand to realize the importance of documenting the evolution of clothing and how it is looked upon by a younger generation. Young viewers usually refer to the photographs as “retro,” he says. In 2008, DeGrand took a group of college students to China for a photographic workshop at Renmin University in Bejing.

While there, he once again found himself drawn to what people were wearing. “Some of the uniforms worn in Chinese culture were so striking,” he states, that he began to document them. Upon his return, DeGrand decided to make a thorough photographic investigation of uniforms, outfits and accessories.

Joel DeGrand has been a professional and fine art photographer for more than 40 years. He earned his B.A. in art education from Indiana University at Pennsylvania in 1968 and an M.F.A. from the University of Oregon in 1973. In 1975, DeGrand helped establish the photography department at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, one of the oldest independent media arts centers in the country. From 1975 to 1987, he served as department head and academic coordinator. Since 1990, he has been an adjunct professor at Columbia College in Chicago.

DeGrand has self-published 12 books of photography since 2008 and over the course of his career he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work has won several awards and can also be found in a host of collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh; and Blue Cross Blue Shield Corporation.

9/11 Commemorative Event South Shore Arts commemorated the tenth anniversary of the events of September 11, 2001, with New York, September 11th by Magnum Photographers, presented in the gallery at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts, August 7 through September 18, 2011.

A special commemorative event, including music and spoken word, was presented on Sunday, September 11. The event featured presentations by the Munster Police Department Honor Guard, the Munster Fire Department and Munster VFW Post 2697. Original spoken word pieces inspired by the 9/11 exhibit were performed

by Beautiful Soul, featuring Lee Charles Gilliam III, Bilneisha Tillman and Kelechukwu Brnfre.

E.N.T., aka Scott Fowler, presented an original piece that he wrote called Beauty In Chaos. Harpist Rebecca Cieply, a member of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra, provided musical background that was sensitive to the occasion.

Salon Show Celebrates 68th Year South Shore Arts celebrated the 68th anniversary of the annual Salon Show, September 25 through November 6, 2011. Exhibit juror David Klamen awarded $10,000 in prizes, thanks to the generosity of many longtime donors, including Judy & Tom Surovek and Tracy & Mark Schwimmer.

While South Shore Arts has been based at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster since it opened in 1989, we have also maintained branch locations in Crown Point and Hammond for the past 13 years. Fee-based classes and free educational outreach programs are offered at all three locations with each branch providing unique opportunities to its host community.

In September 2011, South Shore Arts moved to a new location in Crown Point at 123 N. Main Street, where a pottery studio, beautiful gallery and classroom space provide a pleasant atmosphere for creating and displaying art. At this location, students from Cedar Lake participate in free after-school art classes where they experience a variety of mediums and styles. In the fall and again in the spring, twenty students are chosen by their schoolteacher to participate in the program. Family and friends are invited to attend a culminating art showcase at the Crown Point branch to celebrate the artistic endeavors of these eager young artists.

Free Family Day projects at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts

In October, a fall art project is a treat at South Shore Arts during the annual Pumpkin Walk on the square in Crown Point hosted by the Old Courthouse Foundation.

Hundreds of children visit the art center and enjoy making art. During the Easter Bunny breakfast sponsored by the Crown Point Chamber of Commerce, South Shore Arts adds to the excitement of the day with a spring art project. These programs are free to the public as part of the everykid program.

One of the most popular classes at both Crown Point and Substation No. 9 in Hammond is the Senior Art Workshop. Individuals who have 55 or more years of life experience may take this class at a discounted price.

Excellent instruction is provided by Gerrie Govert in Crown Point and Leona Jurincie in Hammond.

Thanks to funding from the city of Hammond and Mayor Thomas McDermott, many children experience art throughout the year. PACT (Parents and Children Together) is a program conducted at Substation No. 9 for pre-kindergarten students and a parent. Each group visits Substation four times during the year to create an art

project based on the theme studied in their classroom that week. In the 1st grade, students return to Substation No. 9 for the “Polar Express” program. Children arrive in their pajamas to create an ornament based on the popular book

by Chris Van Allsburg. A “Polar Express” reception in midDecember provides an opportunity for family and friends to visit Substation No. 9 and see over 1,100 ornaments created by the children.

Each year, 4th and 5th grade Hammond students are selected by their teachers to participate in the Hammond After-School Scholarship Program. Classes are held at both the Munster and Hammond locations exposing students to new arts education opportunities. South Shore Arts also participates in Downtown Hammond’s Holiday Kick-off in November with a holiday art project and at Bizarre Bazaar in September with the Wacky Hat booth. Children of all ages design unique headwear by adding everything from buttons and puzzle pieces to jewelry and flowers to their hats.

Substation No. 9 is home to a nine-station computer lab where Photoshop and Illustrator classes are held as well as an airbrush studio that provides a place for students to

learn a new skill. Hammond residents may take a class at the Hammond location at half price. Scholarships are also given to students who show an aptitude and interest in art and are recommended by a teacher.

In Munster, the annual Family Art Day is held at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in partnership with Theatre at the Center, Northwest Indiana Symphony and other Art Center tenants. During this event, families can enjoy a day of arts and entertainment at little or no cost, depending on the activity. South Shore Arts provides two free art projects in the art studios, as well as free admission to the art exhibit in the gallery.

Through a Technical Assistance Program grant from the Indiana Arts Commission, workshops for classroom teachers take place at the Munster location during the summer to support art education in the schools. Teachers receive ideas and resources that help them incorporate art into the classroom curriculum throughout the school year. Symphony Celebrates 70 Years of Musical Excellence

The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra launched its 70th season with Swing Time!, an opening concert and gala held at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza and Star Plaza Theatre on Friday evening, September 16, 2011. Guest artists Five By Design joined the orchestra for a toe-tapping Big Band show with a sentimental Pearl Harbor Tribute, commemorating the orchestra’s 70th birthday and its first concert held in Gary, Indiana, on December 7, 1941, in Seaman Hall, a theatre that was part of City Methodist Church. Symphony Executive Director John Cain recognized Sandy and Joe Morrow as the evening’s honorees for providing the Symphony with the generous financial gift that has enabled South Shore Arts’ management of the Symphony, ensuring many years of live classical and pops music to come.

The orchestra and Five Design delighted the audience and received rave reviews for sentimental favorites such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, I’ll Be Seeing you, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Something’s Gotta Give, and Begin the Beguine. Maestro Muspratt also treated the audience to a pictorial walk through the Symphony’s history.

Young People’s Competition winners Steven Caraher, Tim Wittcamp, Christian Fary and Lester Blumberg, a Barbershop Quartet, performed at the opening of the concert’s second half.

Indiana University Northwest was the Presenting Sponsor for the evening and Honorary Chairs for the Gala Committee this year were Cindy and Gary Ault. The Gala exceeded budget and raised nearly $50,000 to benefit the music and education programs of the Symphony, including the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra and Symphony Chorus.

Three hundred Gala guests were treated to delicious food and excellent service by the chef and staff at the Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza. Jackie Wickland, South Shore Arts board president Marcia Glaros and Cindy Ault created beautiful centerpieces with oversized irises and poppies in aqua and coral. A raffle and silent auction were highlighted with dinner for eight donated by Gamba Ristorante and two seats “on the glass” for a Chicago Black Hawks Game. Winning bidders also won a chance to conduct the orchestra this summer and three couples will sit with the orchestra in the strings, percussion and woodwind sections during the Valentine’s Concert scheduled for Friday, February 10, 2012, at Bethel Church in Crown Point.

A lavish post-concert dessert and champagne reception in Celebrity Circle Lounge wowed gala attendees with a beautiful array of desserts, including spectacular dark chocolate baby grand pianos filled with a vanilla mousse! Members of the orchestra and guest artists, Five By Design, along with Maestro Muspratt joined the reception to cap off the 70th celebration. Special thanks to the Gala committee, board, WANISS and the Symphony and South Shore Arts staff for a truly wonderful evening. Arts Providers Receive Public Arts Funding Through South Shore Arts In its role as Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission for Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, South Shore Arts announced the FY2012 grants at the bi-monthly South Shore Arts Chamber of Commerce luncheon held at Venue in Valparaiso on October 12, 2011. Over 60 people attended the luncheon and grants award ceremony. South Shore Arts Announces FY2013 Funding Opportunities In its role as Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission for Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, South Shore Arts will present three grant application workshops in January for arts organization support and art project support to be conducted between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013. Arts funding is available to nonprofit Indiana arts organizations, as well as non-arts organizations providing arts programming in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

Workshops will be held at the following locations: Lubeznik Center for the Arts 101 W. 2nd Street, Michigan City, IN January 10, 2012, 4pm Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center 1420 Munson Road, Porter, IN January 11, 2012, noon South Shore Arts 1040 Ridge Road, Munster, IN January 18, 2012, 5pm Grantees will have the option to apply for Arts Organization Support I (AOS-1) for arts organizations with operating income less than $250,000 or Arts Project Support for non-arts organizations (APS) seeking funding for art projects. Grant applications will be completed on-line for the FY2013 grant cycle, and all applicants, whether new or returning, are encouraged to attend one of the training sessions.

Honoring One of Our Own South Shore Arts is pleased to announce that our Director of Education, Linda Eyermann, was recently inducted as a Lifetime Member into the Society of Innovators Class of 2011-12. The presentation ceremony was held at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond on Thursday, October 20, 2011. As an innovative visual artist, Linda was honored for creating a 12-piece body of art called “Knowing Joe.” The series addressed a common issue, life-altering change, in a new way. Using visual imagery rather than words, she conceptualized through her artwork the story of 17-yearold Joe Nimet’s tragic car accident, and the ways in which

it affected him, his friends and his family. The project was originally made possible by an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission.

The Society of Innovators was launched by Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana Northwest.
