BIG BUS TOUR

In Chicago, November can be the type of month that can serve as a last, hopeful reminder of manageable fall weather or a precursor of what’s to come with winter on the horizon. MOB HISTORY

Chicago’s crime underworld Chicago Architecture Center

HOP ABOARD

Founded back in 1966, the Chicago Architecture Center is one of the largest cultural organizations in the city. If you like a wide variety of tours, this is the place to be, as the CAC offers some 85 different options for discovering the city, with topics ranging from Historic Neighborhoods and Evolving Chicago to Art Deco Skyscrapers, Chicago’s Amazing Fair of 1893 and Parks and Public Spaces. Led by volunteer docents with a passion for all things Chicago, you can expect an informative, entertaining dose of city architecture and history, as well as opportunities for some stellar photo opportunities. Opened just last year, the organization’s sparkling 20,000-square-foot center overlooks the river and serves as a gateway for discovering Chicago’s array of architecture through exciting tours, programs and exhibits. The centerpiece of the new facility is the Chicago Model Experience, featuring better than 4,000 buildings and various interactive elements that bring you closer to the sprawling city outside. 111 E. Wacker Dr. 312-922-3432. Architecture.org

The history of Chicago’s crime underworld is a vast one, and there’s no better way to learn about some of the city’s most famous criminals, mobsters and gangsters — and explore a host of historic crime scenes — than jumping aboard Chicago Crime Tours’ luxury, climate-controlled bus. “One of my favorite Chicago mobsters would probably have to be Dion O’Banion,” says one of Crime Tours’ guides, Michael Dritto. “He was the leader of the North Side gang at one point and ran his bootlegging business out of a flower shop. I love the idea of someone taking hits out on his enemies and then sending them flowers that he personally arranged.” 312-888-6224. ChicagoCrimeTours.com

And just because the 80-degree days may be a distant memory doesn’t mean you can’t still partake in one of the most popular activities in Chicago. The award-winning architectural river cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady, a fascinating 90-minute excursion and one of the top 10 tours in the country according to TripAdvisor users, is still running in November and offers a climate-controlled first deck. Insider’s tip: Buy a combo ticket for the river cruise and a visit the Chicago Architecture Center and you’ll save $7. 312-922-3432. Architecture.org Get the app keychicago

All about Warhol The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world — and exploring it can easily occupy an entire day if you allow for it. New to the Institute in late October is the highly anticipated exhibit Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again, a large-scale retrospective that builds on the wealth of new research, knowledge and perspective that have materialized since Warhol’s death in 1987. The first major Warhol display to be organized by a U.S. institution in three decades, visitors will enjoy more than 400 works of one of America’s most beloved and iconic artists. Earning fame in the 1960s for his groundbreaking pop masterpieces, Warhol boasted some equally significant late work, and the exhibit encapsulates all the aspects and different periods of his wide-ranging career, including paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, videos, archival and printed material, installation, films and media works. 159 E. A walk through history

U-505 German submarine

NATURAL WONDER

Chicago’s world-renowned Museum of Science and Industry offers a plethora of vibrant learning opportunities in Hyde Park. We were able to experience the U-505 German submarine exhibit and tour recently and highly recommend it. Captured in June of 1944 during WWII, the 700-ton U-505 was eventually transported through the Great Lakes and to the museum in 1954, where it was displayed outdoors until 2004. The exhibit is great on its own, full of memorabilia, facts and films, but the on-board tour that takes you through a fascinatingly cramped piece of history — to experience life aboard the mysterious Nazi sub that wreaked havoc on British and American supply ships during the war — is full of captivating anecdotes and insight. The tour of the ship is not included in the museum’s general admission price and requires a separate, timed-entry ticket ($18 for adults and $14 for children ages 3-11). On the way out of the exhibit, check out 75 Stories, a collection of rarely seen photographs, journals and artifacts that provide insight into the lives of German and American sailors during the war. 5700 S. Lake Shore Dr. MSIChicago.org

The art of communication

The mission of the Museum of Contemporary Art is to “present contemporary art and culture in ways that illuminate what it means to be a citizen of both Chicago and the world.” Focusing on how our lives are shaped by language and communication is the new exhibit Direct Message: Art, Language, and Power, which explores the ways artists since the 1960s have utilized words to question how we read, write, hear and speak. Make sure to explore all four sections of works in this exhibit that redefines how we understand the art of communication. 220 E. Chicago. MCAChicago.org

If you want to learn about the diversity of life on Earth and its history, the Field Museum — with its nearly 40 million artifacts and specimens — needs to be on your to-do list, especially the extensive dinosaur collection. One must stop is the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit, where visitors can experience the sheer beauty and intrigue of the natural world by way of 100 of the world’s most striking nature photographs chosen by an international panel from more than 45,000 entries. Endangered monkeys, curious walruses and simmering volcanoes. It’s all here. 1400 S. Lake Shore Dr. FieldMuseum.org Get the app keychicago

The Loop: The center of it all Wreathing of the lions

The beloved Chicago tradition of the wreathing of the lions — when giant holiday wreaths are placed on the Art Institute’s iconic lion statues that flank the entry during the holidays — makes for a great photo op. Insider’s tip: Head inside to see the Miniature Thorne Rooms, several of which are specially decorated for the holiday season. 111 S. Michigan.312-443-3600. ArtIC.edu

Caroling at Cloud Gate Bundle up and belt out some holiday classics, as local Chicago choral groups lead hundreds of celebrants in song at the mirrored structure in the middle of Millennium Park better known as “the bean.” Caroling occurs from 6-7 p.m. every Friday from Nov. 29-Dec. 20. Free. 201 E. Randolph. MillenniumPark.org

Theatre Christkindlmarket district Rivaling anything in the U.S. outside of New York City, Chicago’s theatre district in the Loop is an impressive collection of dance (Joffrey Ballet), opera (Lyric Opera) and stage (Chicago Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Broadway in Chicago productions at the Cadillac Palace, CIBC and Nederlander Theatres). Expect big productions and big names to grace the marquees, especially during the holidays. See page 18-25 of the Holiday Activity Guide insert and page 37 of this issue for more on Chicago’s impressive theatre scene.

This incredibly popular annual outdoor market in Daley Plaza offers traditional German food (bratwurst, pretzels, roasted nuts, chocolate, etc.), drinks and live entertainment. Vendors in this charming, illuminated village sell handmade ornaments, nutcrackers and cuckoo clocks. The market has been a Chicago tradition since 1996 and is influenced by the Christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany (which began in 1545). Admission is free. Insider’s tip: Not only do we recommend a boot-shaped mug of their famous spiced wine, but if you have a larger group, you can reserve a table in the heated tents — and even order a food and beverage package in advance through their website. Christkindlmarket Chicago runs Nov. 15-Dec. 24 Sun.-Thurs. 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Fri.-Sat. 11 a.m.-9 p.m. 50 W. Washington. There is also a second Chicago Christkindlmarket location at Gallagher Way next to Wrigley Field running Nov. 22-Dec. 31. 312-494-2175. Christkindlmarket.com 2019 Holiday Activity Guide

Macy’s holiday fun After taking in the 52nd annual Macy’s holiday windows (on display until Jan. 5), the Holiday Traditions Tour (which highlights the traditions of iconic State Street), stop by the 17,000-squarefoot Walnut Room, a dining landmark on the seventh floor complete with Austrian chandeliers, Russian wood paneling and — most importantly during the holiday season — a 45-foot Christmas tree with 15,000 lights that sits directly in the center of the room. Insider’s tip: The chicken pot pie and Grand Tree buffet are fantastic, but if the wait is too long to be seated in the Walnut Room, head to the adjoining wine bar that still offers views of the tree and an extensive, affordable wine list. And don’t forget to take the kids to Santaland on the fifth floor right up through Christmas Eve to meet the big guy himself. 111 N. State. VisitMacysChicago.com

SANTA SIGHTINGS Santa hangs around until Christmas Eve on the fifth floor of Macy’s at 111 N. State. Free personalized photo ops are available at the Santa House in Millennium Park. Visit MillenniumPark.org for schedules. Navy Pier’s Family Pavilion transforms into an all-new holiday market this season, complete with photo ops with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Lace ‘em up: It’s time to skate MAGGIE DALEY PARK SKATING RIBBON

Easily the most popular spot to skate in Chicago — and probably the Midwest — is the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink in Millennium Park, in large part because of the beautiful backdrop of not only Michigan Avenue, but also the reflective “bean” sculpture behind the rink. It’s free admission, and skate rental is $13$15. 201 E. Randolph. Females at the forefront

If you saw Chef/owner Laura Piper as an eight-year-old, tugging her wagon filled with fresh produce from the family’s garden to sell them door to door to neighbors, you may have envisioned her becoming a passionate restaurant owner and chef who relied heavily on fresh ingredients to create masterful menus at her two sleek, inviting establishments. Both Stock and Ledger and One North Kitchen & Bar are ideal for everything from business lunches to pretheatre cocktails and dinner. A veteran of the reputable kitchens at Gibsons and Frontera Grill, among others, Piper has won the “Best Chefs America” award three times in her career, and her stellar work and creative approach earned One North Kitchen & Bar a spot on the coveted Michelin-recommended list in 2013. Insider’s tip: If you’re headed to a show at the Goodman Theatre or Auditorium Theater, present your ticket for 20 percent off your bill. 70 W. Madison. 312-754-0395. StockAndLedger.com. 1 N. Upper Wacker Dr. 312-750-9700. OneNorthKitchen.com

With an elegant dining room inspired by the Guggenheim in Venice (gallery-worthy art punctuated by marble sculpture, opulent furniture and brass chandeliers) and a French and classic Continental menu created by renowned chef Didier Durand, Marchesa is a stunning culinary work of art in River North. The dramatic space is the brainchild of dining veterans Kathryn Alvera and Jason Clark, who have operated four restaurants together, including Narcisse and Prosecco. Their goals for Marchesa were simple when they opened in 2018: Take guests on a culinary journey through Europe with delicious food and wine served by a welcoming staff, as if an extension of their own homes. Mission accomplished. Try the lamb chops with artichoke risotto or the grilled sea scallops with polenta and king mushrooms. 535 N. Wells. 312-527-9535. MarchesaChicago.com

The Kinzie Chophouse, a gem of a steakhouse nestled in the River North neighborhood and just steps from the Merchandise Mart and the Chicago River, has been offering locals and visitors some of the best steak, homemade pasta and seasonal seafood dishes the city has to offer for nearly 30 years. And did we mention the award-winning wine list? Susan Fransca, who bought the restaurant on her own and refurbished in 1998 when she was just 37, held down the titles of owner, general manager and chef until selling the business in July to Nicole Flevaris and Andreas Tsakonas — and thus keeping alive the rare tradition of a womanowned steakhouse in Chicago. From the menu, try the spicy maple bourbon mussels, pan-seared herb salmon or bone-in Delmonico steak with garlic whipped potatoes. 400 N. Wells. 312-822-0191. KinzieChopHouse.com

At Eris Brewery and Ciderhouse, they take inspiration from the Greek goddess of chaos, who threw the golden apple of discord into a party she wasn’t invited to. The ambitious startup, powered by a trio of women in a maledominated field, is similarly disruptive to the conventional approach of launching a brewpub in a city like Chicago, which is home to more than 100 breweries and growing. At the head of the operation is Michelle Foik, who has more than two decades of experience in the craft beer industry (including at giants like Goose Island and Revolution). Her business partner is Katy Pizza, better known as the “wrangler of details.” Opened in 2018 as the city’s first ciderhouse, brewing facility and restaurant under one roof, the rehabbed old Masonic temple is worth the trip up to Old Irving Park on its own, but off the wide-ranging menu — run by the third member of the female trio, chef Claire Smyth — try the smoked-then-fried cauliflower wings and a burger that consists of a scrumptious blend of Angus chuck, short rib and brisket with sharp cheddar and bacon jam. Wash it down with a Van Van Mojo, a blueberry cider hopped with Mosaic. 4240 W. Irving Park. 773-943-6200. ErisChicago.com Get the app keychicago

New on the scene Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant

This increasingly popular chain (39 locations in 10 states) of restaurants with a goal of making the wine experience enjoyable even for novices has opened its first Chicago location in the glitzy former space of Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House. The three-level restaurant in Chicago’s famed Gold Coast neighborhood has 24,000 square feet to showcase its wines (37 varietals made in suburban Woodridge), and this location will be breaking away from the norm to stock wines from other vineyards, not just their own.
