COME FROM AWAY Based on actual events that took place on September 11, 2001 and the dramatic days that followed, this is the story of a small town that welcomed the world when it needed it most Winner of Best Musical all across North America and a New York Times Critics’ Pick, this incredible true story is centered around a small town on the island of Newfoundland, Canada. When the FAA made the decision to shut down its airspace in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, Gander International Airport took in 38 planes diverted from Europe — carrying nearly 7,000 passengers and crew — quite a task for a town of 10,000 and the volunteers at nearby schools, community centers and churches. Cultures clashed and nerves were put to

the test, but a trust was eventually built and enduring friendships formed. Many of the characters in this breathtaking musical, written by Tony Award nominees Irene Sankoff and David Hein and directed by Tony winner Christopher Ashley, are based on real people or composites of them. Newsweek says “It takes you to a place you never want to leave,” and the Daily Beast calls it “a celebration of the best of humankind.” Come From Away plays the Cadillac Palace Theatre through Aug. 18. 151 W. CHICAGO INSIDER:

Tour guide Lance Friedmann

On the popularity of the Chicago Architecture Center river cruises each summer: The cruise is breathtaking — gliding through a canyon of skyscrapers is an unmatched experience. The docents’ stories vividly bring to life the buildings and the story of Chicago. And it’s a delightful way for families and friends to share an experience they will talk about for years. Two favorite buildings in Chicago: 150 North Riverside because its shoots out from a narrow 40-foot footprint to three times that width, then goes straight up over 50 stories. River cruise guests can’t stop gawking at its gravity-defying profile. And the St. Jane Hotel, originally the Carbide & Carbon Building, is a stunning, soaring Art Deco tower that was designed to resemble a champagne bottle with a dark green shaft and bright gold cap.”

INSIDER PROFILE

Other CAC tours that intrigue him the most: Chicago Architecture: A Walk Through Time is the CAC’s only tour to guide guests chronologically through the history of the skyscraper, all within a five-block radius of the Architecture Center — something that could only be done in Chicago. Chicago Architecture Center docent Lance Friedmann (class of 2015) is the tour director for the CAFC river cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady, the CAC’s official architecture experience and the only cruise endorsed by Chicago’s leading architects. 111 E. Wacker Dr. Call 312-922-3432 or visit Architecture.org

And the Devil in the White City tour, which mixes slides, a bus excursion and a walk through Jackson Park to tell the story of the extraordinary 1893 Columbian Exposition & World’s Fair, as well as the infamous serial murderer Dr. H.H. Holmes. Chicago restaurant recommendations: The Publican, in the hopping Fulton Market District, offers beautifully prepared vegetables, pork and seafood — along with notoriously delicious frites and the best beer menu in town — in a raucous gastropub scene. And Frontera Grill in River North, where national treasure Rick Bayless continually pushes the envelope on inspired regional cuisines from Mexico. Underrated photo opportunity: The cityscape from Adler Planetarium — you see our “front porch” of Grant and Millennium Parks, with the entire skyline behind it. Unbeatable. Get the app keychicago

Discover Oak Street Beach Oak Street Beach covers the area from 500 N. Lake Shore Dr. north to 1550 N. Lake Shore, including Ohio Street Beach. Just a short walk from the north end of Michigan Avenue, it’s generally not as busy as North Avenue Beach (1600 N. Lake Shore) and offers spectacular skylines views (think Hancock building, iconic Drake Hotel and classic Gold Coast condos rising above Lake Shore Drive) and a variety of activities. The aqua-colored water, sunbathers and imported palm trees will have you feeling like you’re somewhere tropical instead of the heart of the Midwest’s largest city. And if you favor a little exercise on vacation, the paved path that skirts around the edge of the beach is perfect for jogging, walking and biking.

STEVE’S SEGWAY TOURS Offering Segway tours along the lakefront and Museum Campus, as well as a number of themed tours (architecture, Riverwalk, haunted neighborhoods, etc.) and even customized adventures for those wishing to create their own excursion, Steve’s Segway Tours is an experienced outfit that covers it all — and is known to have a lot of fun along the way. Steve’s Segway is also the official Trikke tour/rental company and dealership for the entire Chicago area. These three-wheeled vehicles with handlebars are a popular alternative to Segways. 155 N. O’Brien’s serves up American pub fare and a nice selection of beer, wine and cocktails. If you’re hungry, go for the half-pound black angus burger, but they also have summer salads and wraps if you want to stay on the lighter side. Craft beer mecca The Chicago Brewhouse, with an emphasis on the local craft beer scene, is one of the pathway’s most popular gathering spots thanks to a creative assortment of sharable street foods symbolic of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods (crab wontons, al pastor tacos, Polish sausage, falafel and hummus bowls, etc.). As far as the local beer goes, try the Maplewood Son of Juice, Revolution Sun Crusher or Forbidden Root’s strawberry basil hefeweizen. 31 E. Riverwalk. ChicagoBrewhouse.com

With a focus on bringing urban wine country to the heart of Chicago’s Loop, City Winery (its primary location is in the West Loop) has managed to pair stunning views with locally made wine and a delicious menu. Skip the traffic, hit the water The busy summer tourist season usually means Chicago’s traffic situation has a tendency to go from bad to worse. So skip the red lights and potholes, crowded cabs and Ubers and instead get shuttled from one impressive landmark to another on Lake Michigan and the Chicago River with Shoreline Sightseeing’s water taxi service. Shoreline offers five taxi docks, all conveniently located near major attractions like the Willis Tower, Michigan Avenue, Museum Campus and Navy Pier, making it both efficient and fun to experience as much as possible during your stay. And, it should be noted, the Instagram possibilities are endless. 312-222-9328. ’S INSIDER YOUR GUIDE TO CHICAGO

millennium park

Plenty of summer fun from a state-of-the art 40-foot LED screen and concert hall-quality sound provide a memorable movie experience. See Inside Out Aug. 5, The Muppet Movie Aug. 6, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Aug. 13 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding Aug. 20. Films begin at 6:30 p.m. MillenniumPark.org

1

Through Aug. 17, you can enjoy the Grant Park Music Festival’s free concerts in the Pritzker Pavilion, which is arguably the most sophisticated outdoor concert venue of its kind in the U.S. Generally running Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., expect a mix of Gershwin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and more. GPMF.org

2

Another popular experience at the Pritzker Pavilion throughout the summer is the Millennium Park Summer Film Series on Tuesdays. Bring a picnic, kick back and take in a flick — from family classics to cult favorites and blockbusters. The crisp images

THE ULTIMATE PHOTO OP Perfect for that Christmas card photo to make the friends and family jealous, the immensely popular Cloud Gate, which is more commonly referred to by locals as “the Bean,” is the work of British sculptor Anish Kapoor. Some 110 tons of polished stainless steel plates were used to reflect the Windy City’s iconic skyline and clouds above. With a 12-foot arch, the Bean beckons visitors to step inside the concave chamber to see distorted reflections of themselves and snap a few unique photos.

3

The contemporary Lurie Garden is a 3.5-acre urban sanctuary in the middle of the park, and an ideal spot to escape the bustling city that lies just blocks away. Take a stroll among native flowers and plants in a garden that pays homage to Chicago’s transformation from a flat marshland to innovative green city. LurieGarden.org

4

There are few better ways to let the kids (or the kid in you) cool off on a hot August day than by kickoff the shoes and splashing around in the Crown Fountain, the long reflective pool running adjacent to Michigan Avenue that has a pair of 50-foot glass block towers that project video images of Chicago residents. Fun stuff.

’S INSIDER YOUR GUIDE TO CHICAGO

Maggie DALEY park

Family adventures await

PICNIC BREAK

For families looking for an escape to let the kids burn off some energy, all with an incredible backdrop of downtown, you can’t go wrong with a few hours spent at Maggie Daley Park. Conveniently connected to Millennium Park by way of a bridge over Columbus Drive, this 20-acre space opened to substantial fanfare back in 2014 and has become a favorite summer destination for wholesome family fun. The most appealing attraction for the little ones is the sprawling three-acre Play Garden, which features an assortment of custom-designed slides, climbing structures and sculptures (as well as an enchanted forest) that were created in the spirit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. Capturing the imagination is never a bad thing. And a great way to cool off is to immerse yourself in the spray of the popular Watering Hole. Just a short walk away, there are also some challenging rock-climbing structures that provide a unique outdoor recreational experience for all skill levels, as well as a skating rink and 18-hole miniature golf course. 337 E. Randolph. MaggieDaleyPark.com

One underrated aspect of Maggie Daley Park is the experience of having lunch, or a snack or cold drink, in the picnic groves that are spread throughout the park and include wood picnic tables and shade. They are even available to rent out for private functions. Get the app keychicago

’S INSIDER YOUR GUIDE TO CHICAGO

navy pier

50 acres of fun to be had 1 The Chicago Children’s Museum would have to be at or near the top of the list in terms of the best ways to entertain the little ones while visiting Chicago. Inside this energyfilled, expansive museum, kids can dig for dinosaur bones, manage a grocery store, test their building skills or alter the course of a river. 600 E. Grand. ChicagoChildrensMuseum.org

2

Check out some great local musicians and fun cover bands as part of the Live on the Lake concert series in the Miller Lite Beer Garden every weekend through Sept. 1. If a DJ is more your scene, check out Wave Wall Wax, a live DJ series offered the Wave Wall platform at the end of the pier on Saturdays through Aug. 31. And it wouldn’t be a visit to Chicago in the summertime without catching one of the fireworks displays every Wednesday and Saturday evening through the end of August.

Make sure to hold on to your hats while riding the thrilling Pepsi Wave Swinger, or slow things down a bit the classic carousel or iconic Centennial Wheel, which soars 200 feet above the ground and offers enclosed gondolas and 360-degree city views that are tough to beat.

POPULARITY CONTEST Fact: Did you know Navy Pier, as the most popular attraction in the Midwest, draws nearly nine million annual guests? Yep, that’s right, thanks to 50 acres of unparalleled attractions, restaurants, boat docks and family-friendly opportunities. And if you haven’t visited in the last few years, you’ll hardly recognize it after millions in wonderful renovations and additions. 600 E. Grand. NavyPier.org

Excitement abounds

You’ll also find the Amazing Chicago’s Funhouse Maze, a state-of-the-art IMAX Theatre (see The Lion King and more this August), the beautiful, tree-filled Crystal Gardens (above) and the new 200,000 squarefoot cultural family pavilion loaded with restaurants (Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Billy Goat Tavern, Harry Caray’s, etc.) and shopping. Oh, and also the exciting new Offshore lounge and terrace, which happens to be the largest rooftop venue in the entire nation.

Shakespeare and more

For a unique cultural experience, check out the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s personal Courtyard Theater, which evokes the design of Shakespeare’s Globe and others in early modern England, as well as The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, as both foster an intimate relationship between actor and audience. The Wizard of Oz plays through Aug. 25. 312-595-5600. ChicagoShakes.com

River North Art District Chicago’s River North neighborhood is thriving today, serving as the city’s epicenter for nightlife, hotels and shopping. But that wasn’t always the case. In the 1960s, the area had fallen on hard times, with crime running rampant, families moving to the suburbs and abandoned buildings being torn down. But the dormant warehouses and factories suddenly became part of a transformation in the ’70s and ’80s, as developers sought out artists and entrepreneurs who needed spacious studios and workspaces at a low cost. An influx of new businesses followed, and

by the late ’80s and early ‘90s, River North had transformed into a stylish urban neighborhood and serious hub for both creativity and entertainment. The River North Art District — located primarily along Chicago, Superior and Huron between LaSalle and Orleans — now boasts the largest concentration of art galleries in the entire United States outside of Manhattan. Centered around the intersection of Franklin and Superior Streets, fans of art and design will find plenty of unique and imaginative galleries in which to peruse.

Both established and emerging artists provide this gallery’s contemporary art collection in a variety of media. The studio is designed to be a “thought-provoking examination of the creative process.” Check out Jim Rose’s renowned steel furniture display, and appreciate the gallery’s ability to foster relationships between artists and collectors of all levels. Also, save time to peruse Jeff Aeling’s serene oil paintings that beautifully depict the relationship between land, sky and water. 300 W. Superior. 312-722-6447. GalleryVictor.com

This gallery, a major part of the River North District for more than two decades, is known for a type of art that dates as far back as the 4th century B.C. — paintings created with hot wax, as well as both abstract and representational contemporary paintings. For the remainder of August, check out Overlays, featuring powerful new paintings by Rebecca Crowell that reflect her recent travels through Greece, meditations at 2,500-year-old ruins and an appreciation for being

Sculptural works by the most innovative artists working with glass in the world are what to look forward to at this gallery, which has been located in the heart of the district since 1995. Through Aug. 31, the gallery is presenting Jason Pickleman’s Light Reading, an exhibition of works in neon. After nine years as a sit-down BBQ establishment, owner/chef Charlie McKenna made some changes to his award-winning Wicker Park spot this past spring, including moving to expedited counter service, wood-accented walls and new menu items like Texas brisket and pimento cheese sausage. Thankfully, most of the old favorites — housemade moonshine cocktails, Southern fare and bottled sauces to go — remain the same. McKenna’s goal: “Create a Southern-inspired BBQ experience that’s true to regional traditions and reimagined into unique, authentic and delicious flavors.” Sounds good to us. 1856 W. An ideal spot for happy hour, dinner or a late-evening cocktail, Victory Tap is where to indulge in some old-school Italian cooking and personalized pizzas in an upscale tavern atmosphere. If you want to keep it on the lighter side this August, Victory Tap has a host of delectable salad options that can serve as an entire meal. Recommended: The honey crisp apple salad with apples, arugula, gorgonzola and celery, then topped with roasted hazel nuts and apple champagne vinaigrette. Another one of their specialties is the loaded Sicilian chopped salad, which can be ordered in a single or family size. It has crisp romaine and iceberg lettuce, arugula, salami, capicola, fontinella, tomato, artichoke hearts and roasted red peppers, then mixed with the house vinaigrette and topped with a shrimp and Sicilian egg. 1416 S. Nepal House, located in the South Loop near Grant Park, McCormick Place and the Museum Campus, owns a stellar reputation for its traditional Nepali and Indian cuisine. The standout chicken and lamb dishes, roasted in a clay oven, are tough to deny, but the menu has several vegetable dishes and salads as well. Try the tandoori shrimp salad with lettuce, tomato, carrots, cucumbers, onion and shrimp served with the house dressing. You can also have the same salad only with chicken tikka. Lollapalooza aftershows

So you’ve spent the day at Lollapalooza, but haven’t gotten your fill of live music just yet? Or perhaps you got shut out on tickets to the massive festival, but would still like to catch a few of the acts and some of the energy? Well, rest assured, as the party keeps going with the official Lollapalooza aftershows featuring more than 55 performances from more some 110 artists spread throughout Chicago from July 30-Aug. 4. Here are three unique venues that are hosting some of the aftershows. For a full schedule and tickets, visit Lollapalooza.com

Schubas

This venue probably has the most unique point of view in the city, playing metal, rock, punk, hip hop and reggae acts. The place is down and dirty; down because it’s in the South Loop; and dirty for its unfiltered appeal. It’s also a one-stop night out with its roof deck, neighboring restaurant, list of 70 beers and Record Breakers music store, chock full of vinyl and gear. 2105 S. State. ReggiesLive.com

This Wicker Park space has been around awhile, sitting right in the thick of the busy intersection of North, Milwaukee and Damen, and it seemingly focuses on fun bands or hip hop and DJ sets. There always seems to be a lot of energy, and it has a great upstairs viewing section that surrounds the stage. Careful going up the stairs though. 2011 W. North Ave. Subt.net

This is still a premiere stop in Chicago with a lot of history, but since the owners opened up the larger Lincoln Hall (2424 N. Lincoln Ave.) — a venue capable of delivering a great concert experience in the way Metro provides — a few years back, some of the hip, rising acts that once played Schubas now fill up Lincoln Hall. However, there’s just something perfect about this backroom, wooden hall that fits maybe 100 people. The bar up front has a stellar jukebox, and the venue itself is one of the coziest in the city. The acts typically carry more of an Americana, singer-songwriter tradition. 3159 N. Southport Ave. Schubas.com
