CHICAGO RIVERWALK Head down a flight of stairs off of Wacker Drive to discover this pathway full of fun entertainment options and splendid views The Chicago’s Riverwalk is the kind of place that, if you didn’t know it was there, could easily be missed. And that would be a big mistake. Because trust us, you don’t want to miss the Riverwalk. Especially in June. This winding, open-air 1.25-mile pathway is located on the south bank of the main branch of the Chicago River, running from Lake Shore Drive to Franklin Street, beautifully connecting the lakefront with the heart of downtown. Officially opened in 2015, it’s a popular outdoor escape for locals and tourists alike, full of city energy

and relaxation potential at the same time. There are boat excursions to be taken, restaurants and bars to be visited, live music to be listened to, and tours, kayaks and leisurely strolls to be enjoyed. And did we mention it’s one of the best places in the city to just sit back and soak up the sights? So while you’re visiting, be sure to take time to traverse down a flight of stairs and discover the Riverwalk, which has a way of making you remember why you’re on vacation in the first place. For more on what to do and see, check out pages 18-19.

While spending time on the Riverwalk, be sure to check out the Chicago Architecture Center, a dynamic 20,000-square-foot facility that serves as a gateway for a vast number of exciting tours, programs and exhibits. 111 E. Wacker Dr. Architecture.org Get the app keychicago

LAKEFRONT FUN

The Exhibition

Chicago has the fortune of getting to premier Hamilton: The Exhibition, a new walk-through audio tour narrated by Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as Phillipa Soo and Christopher Jackson, who played Eliza Schuyler and George Washington in the original Broadway production of the revolutionary musical. Spearheaded by creative director David Korins, the exhibit gives fans a chance to “go deeper and wider” into the background of not only Hamilton’s life, but also America’s. Insider’s tip: Take advantage of the headsets that are connected to a remote that hangs around your neck. The remote works to automatically play narration as you enter a room, and to hear specific narration that is associated with various historical artifacts scattered throughout the exhibit. The parts of the exhibit that offer this feature have specially marked “targets” that you can point your remote at to prompt the narration. The detail — from the floor to the lighting and score played as you transition from room to room — is incredibly immersive. Both fun and educational, Hamilton: The Exhibition gives people who love the record-breaking show a chance to expand on what Lin-Manuel Miranda was able to capture in the musical. Located at Northerly Island (1535 S. Linn White Drive). Visit HamiltonExhibition.com for hours and ticket info.

Having just opened in late May is the highly anticipated Manet and Modern Beauty display, the first exhibit the Art Institute has devoted exclusively to Edouard Manet in more than 50 years. It’s focused on an important period in the painter’s career when, by the late 1870s, he had begun to transform and focus his artistic style toward a combination of modern art and fashionable femininity. From striking portraits of beautiful women to intimate letters and floral illustrations, the exhibit showcases Manet’s influence on the impressionists and sensitivity to the changing times. Beer with a view in Milwaukee

MORTON ARBORETUM

Southeast Milwaukee has a strong claim as the “beer garden capital of the U.S.” Since 2012, when Estabrook Beer Garden became Milwaukee’s first beer garden since prohibition, dozens of beer gardens have sprung up in parks and open spaces in the region. The Milwaukee County Parks system now hosts five permanent beer gardens, as well as two Traveling Beer Gardens that travel to different parks in Milwaukee County every two or three weeks in the summer. The beer gardens serve beer from the iconic Sprecher Brewery fire trucks, with 12 craft beers on tap. Bring your own steins, pint or liter glasses to save a few bucks, or pick up a limited-edition souvenir glass at the beer garden. Beer-garden classics like pretzels and brats are available, as well as food from local food trucks — and visit on a Friday or Saturday night for live music. Milwaukee’s beer gardens are family friendly too, so feel free to bring the kids, or your fourlegged family members. For 2019 tour locations and dates visit www.travelingbeergardens.com

The 1,700 acres that make up the Morton Arboretum, an internationally recognized nonprofit organization dedicated to the planting and conservation of trees, is home to a rich collection of more than 222,000 live plants representing nearly 4,300 species from around the world. Open 365 days a year, the Arboretum’s goal is to help us understand the rich diversity and benefits of nature, and it offers a wide variety of activities, events, exhibits and classes ranging from guided adventures and tram tours for kids to gardening and nature art and photography for adults. 4100 Illinois Route 53 in suburban Lisle. 630-968-0074. The town square of Chicago — or as close as we have to one — is the sprawling, gorgeous Millennium Park. Located in the heart of downtown between Lake Shore Drive and Michigan Avenue, this 24-acre space offers all kinds of options for entertainment, relaxation and photos ops. It’s an award-winning center for music, architecture, art and landscape design. For a full schedule of events and things to see, visit MillenniumPark.org

Cloud Gate

LURIE GARDEN

The “Bean,” which carries the official name of Cloud Gate, has become the primary attraction of Millennium Park and an Instagram favorite. Some 110 tons of polished stainless-steel plates went into the building of the structure, which beautifully reflects the city’s famous skyline. Insider’s tip: Don’t leave until you step inside the concave chamber to see a distorted view of yourself.

It’s rare to have a place like this in a city like this. There simply is nothing like a leisurely stroll through this beautiful 3.5-acre garden, which can make you feel removed from sometimes hectic atmosphere of the metropolis that lies just steps away. Savor the numerous flower beds, tall hedges, boardwalks over pools of water, song birds and majestic views. There are plenty of benches available to enjoy lunch or a cup of coffee as well. LurieGarden.org

For the fitness-minded traveler, Millennium Park offers free summer workouts on Saturdays on the Great Lawn at Pritzker Pavilion. Classes begin every hour on the hour with Tai Chi at 7 a.m., yoga at 8 a.m., Pilates at 9 a.m. and Zumba at 10 a.m. Weekday yoga will also be offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30–8:15 a.m. MillenniumPark.org

Crown Fountain Ready to get your feet wet now that summer has arrived? This long reflective pool has a pair of 50-foot glass block towers that project video images of Chicago residents at each end.

Maggie Daley Park Maggie Daley Park is an impressive green space, conveniently connected to Millennium Park by way of the BP Bridge, that has become a favorite spot to let the kids be kids since it opened in 2014.

The three-acre Play Garden features an assortment of customdesigned slides, climbing structures and sculptures (as well as an enchanted forest) that were created in the spirit of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland to capture the imagination of the young ones. If it’s warm enough, bring the swimsuits and check out the spray features at the Watering Hole. The Tower Bridge, a suspension bridge elevated by a pair of tours, offers opportunities for creative fun as well. 337 E. Randolph. MaggieDaleyPark.com

MUST-DO LIST The Skating Ribbon is a winding path twice the length of a lap around a traditional skating rink, perfect to walk, roller blade or ride scooters in warmer weather. Two stunning rockclimbing structures rest in the middle of the Skating Ribbon, providing a unique outdoor recreational experience for all skill levels with the help of park staff supervision. Don’t forget to enjoy a round at the 18-hole miniature golf course as well. It may not be Pebble Beach, but there are few backdrops as impressive as this one.

A splendid place to see a play in the city is the Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s uniquely personal Courtyard Theater, which evokes the design of Shakespeare’s Globe and others in early modern England, as well as The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare, as both foster an intimate relationship between actor and audience. See the North American premiere of Six, as the wives of Henry VIII join forces for a thrilling pop-concert spectacle, through June 30. 800 E. Grand Ave. on Navy Pier. 312-595-5600. ChicagoShakes.com

When it comes to pure entertainment for the little ones in Chicago, near the top of the list has to be the Chicago Children’s Museum. DON’T MISS OUT Get away from it all — if even for a few minutes — in the beautiful and semi-secluded Crystal Gardens. Get out of the sun and enjoy a show and the incredible IMAX Theatre or get silly in the Amazing Funhouse Maze. Even locals are still marveling at the new 200,000 square-foot cultural family pavilion loaded with restaurants and shopping.

The nation’s largest rooftop venue An exciting new addition to Navy Pier this spring is Offshore, the largest rooftop venue in the entire nation. Perched atop the third floor of the Festive Hall, this stylish 36,000-square-foot all-season hotspot offers a splendid panoramic view of the skyline and Lake Michigan, as well as a radiant bar and impressive culinary team. This summer, Offshore’s 20,000-square-foot terrace — with its entertainment and gaming area and seven fire pits — figures to be a popular hangout spot for sure.

Also, if you’re in the mood for a cold drink and live music, check out the Live on the Lake! concert series in the Miller Lite Beer Garden, running every weekend through the summer and spotlighting local musicians and cover bands.

Fashion insider

Chicago-based clothing stores that have caught my attention: Genevieve Boutique: Genevieve opened her Lincoln Square boutique just over a year ago and is killing it. She carries a fabulous assortment of easy throw-on pieces that instantly take your look to the next level, and I love her selection of great tops to pair with a jean and heal for a night out. I’m also a sucker for friendly owners who make their clients feel special. 4745 N. Lincoln. GenevieveBoutique.com

GENEVIEVE BOUTIQUE

INSIDER PROFILE

Fashion trends we’ll be seeing this summer: The print: Polka dots. Fun and fashionable this summer, especially in black and white. I love this print in a dress for women and a casual, short-sleeved button down for men. The color story: Neon. Yes, neon may scare some people away, but if done in moderation, this trend is sure to make a statement. Try in an accessory like a great clutch or watch. The neckline: Asymmetrical. If you love a cold shoulder, try an asymmetrical neckline instead of the peek-a-boo shoulder trend that was so last season. The accessory: Belt bags. Belt bags are still all the rage this season. Try one as a fitted crossbody for a modern and more wearable take on this trend. The jewelry: Chunky gold moon hoops. Try this modern take on the classic hoop earring. These statement pieces are the perfect way to glam up any look.

Cinnamon Boutique: Emily, the owner, does an amazing job at selecting some of the most special pieces you’ll find in Chicago. They carry everything from great basic t-shirts to unique cocktail dresses and everything in between. They are a high-end, onestop shop for your entire wardrobe. 2104 W. Roscoe. CinnamonBoutique.com Favorite shopping area downtown: Oak Street downtown is a great little spot with big-name stores mixed in with local boutiques. I think people often assume that once you get downtown you won’t be able to find any local spots, but one of my very favorite local boutiques just opened on Oak Street: The LBD Chicago. It is right next door to Prada, St. John, Armani and Maje (a favorite shop that will always have a special place in my heart ever since shopping there in Paris).

Pride Fest is upon us SPOTS TO HIT Sidetrack

OLD RELIABLE

The world-famous Chicago Pride Parade annually takes place the last Sunday of June (June 30 this year), but the weekend before that event, Chicago PrideFest (June 22-23) officially kicks off the party. And what a party it is. This exciting two-day street festival brings an estimated 100,000 revelers each year to celebrate the LGBTQ lifestyle, culture and community. Expect plenty of live music and entertainment spanning three different stages, as well as plenty of food and drink options and more than 100 arts, crafts and merchant vendors. And did we mention dancing? PrideFest is from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23 at 800 W. Waveland (corner of Halsted and Waveland) in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood, believed to be America’s first recognized gay village. The festival is easily accessible via the CTA red line Addison stop. Insider’s tip: It’s not uncommon a lot of nearby bars and restaurants to have a “Pride Package” for both PrideFest and the parade on June 30, which can include food and drinks and access to bathrooms, etc., which is convenient and can save a lot of time and money. The Pride Fest and parade, especially if it’s your first visit, can make for some long days and nights, so pace yourself and make friends with your water bottle.

Arguably the most well known, consistent mainstay in Boystown is Roscoe’s. Chill outside on the sidewalk patio, step inside to dance the night away or lose your inhibitions and hop on stage for one of their amateur contests. 3356 N. Halsted. Roscoes.com

This used to be just a fun little bar in Boystown, but that was then, and this is now. These days, their impressive multi-level layout is so expansive you can actually get lost inside. Make it a priority to grab at least one drink atop the fantastic rooftop bar. 3349 N. Halsted. SidetrackChicago.com

Kit Kat Lounge & Supper Club This is a great spot for dinner, but their specialties are the popular diva shows and a martini list that might rival anywhere in the city. 3700 N. Halsted. KitKatChicago.com

Little Jim’s Tavern If you’re looking for an unassuming corner pub with friendly bartenders and great drink specials, head to Chicago’s first official gay establishment (open since 1975). It’s open till 4 a.m., so it’s a great spot for a nightcap in the neighborhood. 3501 N. Halsted.
