SKATING IN MAGGIE DALEY PARK The unique skating ribbon that lies just steps from Millennium Park offers a fun, photo-worthy experience like no other No, Chicago’s ice-skating opportunities may not be quite as iconic as Rockefeller Center or Central Park in New York, but Millennium Park’s McCormick Tribune Ice Rink and the Maggie Daley Park skating ribbon are ideal for getting a little exercise and fresh air while enjoying the Chicago skyline. Maggie Daley Park, located just a few steps east of Millennium Park, offers up a unique ribbon of ice that winds through a rolling landscape to provide a truly unique experience — especially with the city serving as a twinkling backdrop. This is not your typical ice rink experience, but instead a type of multi-sensory activity that’s best described as “alpine in the city.” The winding path is twice the length of a lap around

a traditional skating rink, and to make things even more perfect, you can grab a steaming cup of coffee or hot chocolate nearby to warm you up. And did we mention legendary photo opportunities abound? Your Instagram account will get all kinds of attention, we promise. For a bite to eat close by, Rudy’s Bar and Grille (69 E. Madison) is a classic pub and restaurant filled with plenty of Chicago memorabilia. They’re famous for their burgers, and if the skating didn’t chill you to the bone, they have a signature milkshake martini worth writing home about. Skating is free seven days a week, and skate rental runs $13-$15. 337 E. Randolph. 312-552-3000. MaggieDaleyPark.com Get the app keychicago

The famed Chicago Art Institute is home to one of best, most expansive art collections anywhere in the world — and exploring it can easily occupy an entire day if you allow for it.

Founded in 1961, this Hyde Park gem is one of the nation’s oldest African-American–focused museums and is dedicated to the study and conservation of African American history, culture and art. Lover’s Lane:

The place for romantic massage candles Dedicated toward helping couples make their relationships better by improving intimacy, Lover’s Lane has more than 30 outlets, including 16 in Chicagoland, offering a wide array of lingerie, menswear, lotions, books, costumes, romantic gifts of all kinds and so much more. Shop for one-of-a-kind romantic gifts and bedroom essentials that will surprise and please any grownup on your list. Particularly popular, especially leading up to Valentine’s Day, are Lover’s Lane’s assortment of massage candles. Here are three favorites: The Vanilla Fetish mini massage candle helps set the stage with soft, romantic light and the seductive scent of vanilla. After about 20 minutes, the temperature is perfect to pour the liquid oil into your hands for a sensual massage. The Kiss or Tell massage candle is a 100-percent natural blend of hemp seed and cosmetic-grade oils that easily absorb to soften and condition your skin. It’s not only vegan, but paraben- and glutenfree as well. Carrying a creme fraiche consistency, you can expect a cherry blossom and white patchouli scent. Finally, the Chalk Dirty to Me massage candle provides message chalk for an opportunity to write a little note for your special someone in the morning, and then a sensual massage later. This luxurious candle burns at a lower temperature than traditional candles, melting into a warm oil scented with a medley of exotic mangosteen, acai berry and sweet musk — then enhanced by a whisper of white lily infused with a special pheromone sex attractant. 955 W. Steak: It’s what’s for dinner “churrasco way” of cooking and their presentation — a plentiful assortment of seasoned beef, lamb, pork, chicken and Brazilian sausage cooked over a wood charcoal grill, then skewered and served tableside — is overwhelming to the senses. The lamb chops, parmesancrusted pork loin, flank steak and bacon-wrapped filet come highly recommended. We fully realize the steak is the allure at Texas de Brazil, but we’re also here to tell you not to overlook the stellar salad, offering a wide array of chef-crafted salads, roasted vegetables, imported cheese and charcuterie. Don’t leave without trying the smoked salmon, steamed asparagus, roasted red peppers or lobster bisque.

Considering the assortment of USDA Prime steaks, dry-aging room, fresh seafood, innovative side dishes to share, a stellar wine list and a dazzling view of the Chicago skyline and river, it’s easy to see why Chicago Cut, blending modern and traditional styles, has become one of the premier restaurants in the city. The lobster escargot appetizer comes highly recommended, as does the filet mignon and bone-in ribeye. Don’t be surprised if you witness a celebrity sighting or two as well. 300 N. Kinzie Chophouse is a gem of a steakhouse, nestled in the River North neighborhood and just steps from the Merchandise Mart river, that has been offering some of the best steak, homemade pasta and seasonal seafood dishes the city has to offer for nearly 30 years. Insider’s tip: Making this chain even more enticing is the solid weekday happy hour from 4:30-6 p.m. with specials like $3 domestic beers, $5 glasses of a privatelabel wine, $5 caipirinhas and well cocktails and $7 martinis. And if you’ve never had a Brazilian caipirinha… well, you’re in for a treat. 210 E. Upper Illinois. 312-595-0913. TexasDeBrazil.com

NIGHTLIFE

Buddy Guy (right), the 83-year-old legendary blues front man, takes up his annual month-long residency at his namesake bar, Buddy Guy’s Legends in the South Loop, through Jan. 26. Long celebrated as both a blues and rock music inspiration (and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee), Guy is renowned for his showmanship — it’s not uncommon to see him play the guitar with drumsticks or while walking through the audience. Witnessing a one-of-a-kind show from a living legend is pretty special, especially considering the intimate setting and a stage that has been graced with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and John Mayer over the years. Don’t forget to enjoy the excellent New Orleans-style grub as well. Buddy Guy’s Legends is located at 700 S. Wabash. 312-427-1190. BuddyGuy.com Another spot for quality live music not far away from Legends is Reggie’s Rock Club in the South Loop, which is about as versatile as it gets, playing metal, rock, punk, hip hop and reggae acts. With an unfiltered appeal, it also boasts a neighboring restaurant, list of 70 beers and Record Breakers music store. ON STAGE

Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival

This quirky, hilarious community event, which debuted in 2002, is now the largest in the world, hosting more than 180 different groups and putting on 120 shows over the two-week run. From Jan. 9-19, performances will take place in each of the four spaces of Stage 773. 1225 W. Belmont. 773-327-5252. Stage773.com

Whisper House

Black Button Eyes Productions concludes its season of “Ghost Stories” with this Chicago premiere about a boy whose father’s plane is shot down in the Pacific during WWII. Sent to live with a menacing aunt in her remote and haunted lighthouse, he must confront not only the spirits there but also the demons within. Playing through Feb. 15 at The Athenaeum Theatre. 2936 N. Southport Ave. 773-935-6875. AthenaeumTheatre.org

Thirst

Strawdog Theatre Company’s 32nd season continues with the Midwest premiere of Thirst, a powerful story about a family dealing with life in a segregated society following a devastating war and water shortage. Thirst works to explore the politics of race and re-examine the definition of community in a tenuous, post-apocalyptic world. Playing through Feb. 15 at 1802 W. Berenice Ave. 773-644-1380. Strawdog.org

2020 is the Year of Chicago Music Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events recently announced that 2020 will be the Year of Chicago Music. Ranging from rock and blues to gospel, and classical to jazz and house — and everything in between — this year-long celebration of Chicago’s vibrant, diverse music scene will include a 17-day cross-genre music festival that kicks off Memorial Day weekend, as well as special performances at the Taste of Chicago during its 40th anniversary and support for neighborhoods and venues. During your stay, check out these popular music venues:

Kingston Mines

In business since 1968, the legendary Kingston Mines (pictured), with its two stages, music seven nights a week, walls painted with scenes of the Mississippi Delta and the feel of a log cabin with long, communal tables and sizeable dance floors, is every bit authentic. Insider’s tip: Check out the great bar specials and lip-smacking Southern food. See Big James and the Chicago Playboys and Joanna Connor on Jan. 10-11 and a blues jam with Linsey Alexander Jan. 12. 2548 N. Halsted. KingstonMines.com

Subterranean

This Wicker Park space has been around awhile, sitting right in the thick of the busy intersection of North, Milwaukee and Damen, and it seemingly focuses on fun bands or hip hop and DJ sets. There always seems to be a lot of energy, and it has a great upstairs viewing section that surrounds the stage. Careful going up the stairs though.
