Aproject to transform a Key Largo clothing store into a gas station and convenience store largely meets Monroe County development code, according to county staff at a Jan. 24 meeting of the Development Review Committee.

Twelve county staff members who make up the DRC voiced no major issues with an application for a major conditional use permit at the current Anthony’s clothing store at MM 98.2. The DRC makes recommendations to the Monroe County Planning Commission, where four of the five members must vote “yes” to approve the major conditional use request.

In order for the project to proceed, a variance request by the applicant to adjust a curb cut requirement would need the planning commission’s approval. Approval of the variance would reduce the required separation between curb cuts. Current code provides for 245 feet of separation between curbs. A meeting to take up the major conditional use request hasn’t been scheduled just yet, as the applicant’s variance request went before the planning commission on Jan. 25.

Owners Daniel Barry Jr. and Archer Barry filed an application in February 2022 to turn the clothing

store into a 7-Eleven gas station with 11 fueling stations and a 24/7 convenience store. No specific turn lanes are provided entering the property from U.S. 1. The site currently has four curb cuts that allow motorists on U.S. 1 to enter and exit. That would change with the 7-Eleven project to enter-only and exit-only driveways for each direction of U.S. 1.

During recent community meetings, local residents living near the proposed project shared concerns over more traffic and fears of accidents. The developer’s agent, Jason Green of Axis Infrastructure, said the project doesn’t create more traffic in comparison to destinations like a clothing store. Green said the gas station and convenience store only capture vehicles driving in and out of the Keys.

Patricia McGrath told the DRC that the area doesn’t need any more high-intensity uses such as gas stations.

“The Monroe County Planning Department, I believe, should be in the business of protecting its citizens from developments like these,” she said.

Dottie Moses, president of the Key Largo Federation of Homeowners, said the project is a “very large traffic concern,” especially with no deceleration lanes proposed.

“We can’t understand why they’d move forward with a highintensity use that exacerbates issues on the highway,” Moses said.

AHialeah man died after his boat hit a channel marker near Tavernier Key. Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation officers were sent to a single-boat accident on the bayside of Tavernier Key around 8 p.m. on Jan. 21. According to FWC, the 26-foot Contender had five occupants onboard, including the operator, identified as Freddy Diaz.

The boat struck the channel marker and Diaz was thrown upon impact. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

“Our sympathies are with the victim's family and friends during this difficult time,” Arielle Callender, FWC spokeswoman, said.

FWC said an investigation is ongoing. The other occupants on board live in Miami and Hollywood. Their status was unknown at the time of the report. The Keys Weekly reached out to FWC’s office in Tallahassee for further information and is waiting for a reply.

The crash is the second fatal boating accident in the Upper Keys since the start of the year. The first occurred Jan. 2 when a 25-foot Skeeter collided with a jet ski. The man operating the jet ski, Anthony Abate, of Hialeah Gardens, died from his injuries. Occupants in the Skeeter were uninjured.

BUILDING BLOCKS?

Six village properties can be developed as 70 wait for permits

Building permits in the village of Islamorada are decreasing — all but 22 market rate allocations were available with 73 applicants waiting to build on their properties as 2022 closed.

With 11 remaining market rate building permits expected to be drawn down in 2023, the majority of village council members wanted to stay on its current distribution schedule. A round of building permits were awarded to property owners via a 4-0 vote during a Jan. 19 meeting inside Founders Park Community Center.

Six applicants were evaluated, scored, ranked and recommended to be the next recipients of a building permit by village planning staff. Five of the applications approved for a building permit for the fourth quarter of 2022 have been on the list for an allocation since 2020. One awardee submitted an application last November.

Before the council’s approval of the building permits, Councilman Henry Rosenthal pitched his ongoing support to extend them through 2026, not 2023. Rosenthal acknowledged that the village needs more time to plan once the building permits are gone and millions of dollars in lawsuits are facing the village. He also criticized the lack of discussion and definitive decisions on the matter by previous councils.

“How’s it in our best interest to pull the plug and say ‘Come on, sue us. We’re ready,’ he said. “If we reduce what’s left and make it come out to 2026, we’d be giving out one permit or possibly two a year. And that’s not going to satisfy a lot of people, but I’m getting paid to do the right thing with the people’s money.”

Dan Gulizio, village development director, told the dais that the previous village council turned down an alternative schedule to give out allocations through 2025. However, Gulizio noted that the village has administrative relief credits, which give permits to property owners who’ve been in the system for four years and haven’t received a permit. Gulizio said there are 25 to 27 credits available.

“I think there is still time after the allocation period formally ends in June of 2023 to continue to consider relief for individuals on the current queue for an allocation,” Gulizio said.

Village Manager Ted Yates said new people could enter the system for a building permit if it remains open through 2025. Any chances to receive administrative relief could be slim for those property owners. And Yates said there are property owners who’ve been waiting for a permit for years — as far back as 2019.

“Unfortunately, when they first went into the system, the cost to build now is probably 50% higher than it was three years ago,” Yates said.

Vice Mayor Sharon Mahoney asked why the village is still taking new building applications.

“All we’re doing is keeping the train going,” she said. “Can’t we put a moratorium on new buildings?”

Gulizio said the village doesn’t want to exacerbate the problem. But he said the village has an obligation to protect the constitutional rights of property owners under language found within the Florida Keys Area of Critical State Concern.

“If someone has an individual building lot, and they want to build on it and we interfere with that right, we risk litigation in connection with that either under a takings claim or a Bert Harris claim,” Gulizio said. A Bert Harris Claim is a specific process for landowners to seek relief when their property is unfairly affected by government action.

Roughly 70 property owners on the list are awaiting a building permit, but Gulizio said there are another 1,000 lots in the village that haven’t been developed that could apply for a building permit.

Mahoney, Rosenthal, Mayor Buddy Pinder and Councilwoman Elizabeth Jolin voted in favor of the latest round of building permits. Councilman Mark Gregg abstained from the vote since his family and he are on the building permit list. A special meeting on Jan. 24 to discuss the building permit allocation system was canceled last week. The meeting will be rescheduled in February after the Local Planning Agency meets on Feb. 13 at the Founders Park Community Center.

In addition to dwindling building permits, the dais received information about the village’s case for the 300 affordable housing units. For months, the village and city of Marathon have been dealing with an Aug. 3 decision from Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal that determined the 300 affordable housing allocations provided by the state in 2018 were illegal. With the allocations earmarked for “early evacuation,” the ruling declared that the designation violated Florida Statute requiring hurricane evacuation for permanent residents of no more than 24 hours.

Village Attorney John Quick told council members that the Florida Supreme Court declined petitions from Islamorada and Marathon on Jan. 13 to retain those affordable housing units. Quick said the village will look into legislative solutions that other Keys municipalities are seeking. If no legislative fix is possible, Quick said the case would be remanded to the Florida Division of Administrative Hearings for further proceedings.

CROOKED PALM SUPPLEMENTAL PARKING AGREEMENT

Last month, the village dais voted 3-2 to approve a major conditional use request for Crooked Palm Distillery at the former BB&T building on Plantation Key. During the discussion portion of the Jan. 19 meeting, Jolin asked Gulizio about a supplemental parking agreement that was provided by the applicant just before the December meeting. Gulizio said there are 19 conditions the applicant must meet for the distillery and tasting room development. One stipulates a parking agreement with a nearby property owner in the event there’s inadequate parking onsite. A parking agreement presented to Gulizio and the village proposed parking at 168 Gardenia Street. Gulizio said a parking agreement that was provided last-minute isn’t being accepted by the planning department at this juncture.

“It’s great that the applicant submitted something for review, but we’re not prepared to sign off on it at this point,” he said

COMMITTEE SELECTION COULD CHANGE

Council members currently make appointments to eight village committees that are tasked with making recommendations to the dais. But that selection process could change following a discussion brought forth by Mahoney. Instead of each council member placing a member of two on a select committee, she suggested the dais come to a consensus on candidates in the village who are interested in a seat and submit an application for a two-year term. Mahoney wanted committee positions to be more open to the public as opposed to council members picking people they know.

“I think we’re not looking at a lot of people in this community who want to be on some of these committees … because they don’t know us personally or know how to go about it. We have a lot of smart people in this community who’ve asked me about being on committees but they don’t know how to go about it,” she said.

Jolin, who’s served on committees, acknowledged that a councilperson should be assigned to a committee to provide more continuity.

Gregg also served on committees in the village. He said a council vote on committee appointments would provide a tighter group “where we wouldn’t have extreme positions that can lead to arguments, ineffectiveness and lack of action.”

Yates said the village could advertise committee positions, obtain applications, allow the council to conduct interviews and collectively make a decision.

Rosenthal felt the change was just another layer of government. He said he’s happy with interested residents giving him a call.

“If it works, I (will) appoint them. It’s just that simple with me. I don't think we need to have another committee for the committee,” he said.

KEYS LEGISLATORS SEEK ANNUAL $20 MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

Environmental Protection, and then sent to local municipalities to use for projects including stormwater and canal restoration.

The Senate’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee passed the bill on Jan. 17 via a 9-0 vote. Rodriguez, who serves as committee chair, said the bill’s passage through the first committee is “groundbreaking.” But Rodriguez said the bill has a long road to become law.

“As the bill sponsor, I could not be happier and I will continue to work tirelessly to get this legislation over the finish line,” she said.

Stewardship Act funding fluctuated year-to-year since its passage in 2016. Legislators representing the Keys, going back to former state Rep. Holly Raschein and former state Sen. Anitere Flores, fought each session to secure as much money as possible in the budget.

In the first year, $5 million was allocated for water projects and land acquisition. A year later, the legislature approved $13.3 million. Stewardship Act funds totaled $10 million in 2018 and $11 million in 2019.

SCOTT ADDRESSES KEYS MIGRANT CRISIS

Legislators in the Florida House and Senate are beginning to file funding requests and proposed policy changes as a 60-day session in Tallahassee starts March 7. Committees are gathering to consider bills, including one proposal recently filed by Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez to obtain millions in annual funding for a key Florida Keys program.

Legislation sponsored by Mooney and Rodriguez, House Bill 135 and Senate Bill 54, requests $20 million annually for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act that funds nearshore water projects and acquisition of environmentallysensitive land. Funds would be issued to the state Department of

Financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in Gov. Ron DeSantis cutting $1 billion for programs, including $10 million from the Stewardship Act. By 2021, full funding was granted for the program, with $20 million for water quality projects and $5 million for land acquisition.

“The main goal is just get it out of the begging mode every year,” Mooney said regarding the latest proposal.

Full funding for the Stewardship Act sits atop the legislative priorities for Monroe County in the upcoming session. Funds awarded to Keys municipalities can’t be used for wastewater projects, according to the proposal. Legislation was referred to the House and Senate’s Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations committees.

The bill would need to pass through the House and Senate before the governor considers signing it into law.

SENATOR CALLS EVENTS ‘ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING’

Amid an explosion in migrant landings in the Florida Keys to begin the new year, Marathon received a visit from U.S. Sen. Rick Scott on Jan. 19 for a press conference regarding the ongoing border security crises affecting South Florida communities.

Scott’s appearance at the Marathon airport was preceded by a briefing from U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations regarding the current situation and local response to the extreme migrant influx in recent weeks. The senator’s visit also included a boat tour earlier in the day to view dozens of migrant vessels dotting the Keys’ shorelines.

“The Biden administration has got to be clear that we’re going to enforce our immigration laws, we’re going to enforce our asylum laws, we’re going to secure our borders,” Scott told reporters.

“What I heard and saw during my briefing and tour … makes me furious and is absolutely heartbreaking. Our brave law enforcement officers … are doing everything they can to keep our communities safe, but this administration has completely abandoned them.”

Scott’s conference joined a chorus of requests from local, state and federal leaders for a stronger response to the record landings. In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2022, Coast Guard crews interdicted a record 6,182 Cuban migrants before reaching shore. They are already on pace to smash that record in less than six months, with 4,881 migrants interdicted from Oct. 1, 2022 to Jan. 4.

On Jan. 6, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a 60-day state of emergency

and signed Executive Order 23-03, activating the Florida National Guard and other agencies to provide resources in support of local governments responding to the migrant spike.

Scott’s press conference comes on the heels of an influx of equipment and personnel in recent weeks from multiple military and law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, FWC Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida National Guard.

On Jan. 5, President Joe Biden announced a new U.S. policy that will accept 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The program is a pivot away from previous policies that would allow migrants who reached land to stay in the country as they waited for asylum hearings – a wait currently averaging 4.3 years, as reported by CNN on Dec. 26.

As of the same date, nearly 1.6 million asylum applications were currently pending – the largest number ever on record, according to an analysis of federal data by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

“Do not just show up at the border. Stay where you are and apply legally from there,” Biden said. “Starting today, if you don’t apply through the legal process you will not be eligible for this new parole program.”

“We want to send a message out to these third-world countries about the changes in the policy now, which no longer allows you to come here and be released,” Ramsay said in the press conference. “You’re going to be put in secure detention until you’re sent back to your home country. We want those people to know that before they try to come here, so they can make that decision whether it’s worthwhile.”

BUFFETT BUZZ ‘ICONIC SWING SOUND’

Oh, wait a second. Mom just told me that it is not food; he’s a musician. Well, what do I know, my favorite music is the “Dateline” NBC theme song and the sweet, soothing sound of Keith Morrison’s voice. Anyway, mom also told me Jimmy Buffett was a big part of her childhood, growing up in Pennsylvania. She had the chance to see him in concert many times. People are going nuts to see him and there’s been a virtual riot to get tickets. I mean, can I get a press pass or something? I mean, I am the famous fox and was named “Best Local Celebrity” in the Upper Keys in 2022. I think Mr. Buffett should acknowledge and respect that title.

Reef is a red fox that was saved from a fur farm. He now lives in Key Largo with his human, Nicole Navarro.

The Upper Keys Humane Society had their big annual gala on Jan. 13 at Coconut Cove Resort and Marina. A little birdie told me it was a whole lot of fun and they raised a bunch of money for the shelter.

This Friday, Jan. 26, Jellyfish Daydreams is hosting Painting with Alyssa from 6 to 8 p.m. For $45, you can learn to paint on upcycled marine debris. It will be ocean-themed and 10% will be donated to a marine conservation group. Snacks, tea and water will be provided but you are welcome to BYOB. Health department appoints Roby

as nursing director

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County (DOH-Monroe) has appointed Mark Roby as its new director of nursing.

“We are so excited to welcome Dr. Mark Roby to the Monroe County Department of Health,” said Carla Fry, new administrator and health officer. “Mark brings a wealth of experience in executive leadership and nursing to the position. He will be a terrific asset as we continue to enhance public health services throughout the county.”

Concert Association opens 53rd season with Glenn Miller Orchestra

The Florida Keys Concert Association opened its 53rd concert season at Coral Shores and Marathon high schools with program director Norman Werbner and FLKCA board member Delcine Alexander introducing the audience to a well-known Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Miller was an American big band founder, composer, arranger and trombone player. In the dance band music era, also called the swing era, big bands needed musical parts for the musicians. At that time, Miller discovered a simple music formula that made his music distinguishable and broadly liked for its sound, simplicity and rhythm.

The band is known for its music and charismatic performances.

George Reinert, the band’s trombonist, enjoys playing in a big band and has played there since 1994. He enjoys the opportunity of touring, seeing things and having various experiences. For him, to be in the band is exciting, but it also has its price. George points out that everyone is not married in the band.

“Married musicians stay only seasonally. We have a different way of life,” Reinert said.

To Reinert, it is important to be a part of Glenn Miller’s music. “The band plays an important, popular historical music. Without it, we as musicians would have no purpose,” he said.

Roby started his nursing career over 25 years ago as cardiac telemetry nurse after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. In addition, Roby holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Virginia Tech, an MBA in human resource management from the University of Phoenix, a master’s degree in nursing education from the University of South Florida, and a doctorate of nursing practice from Capella University.

Roby has served as a nurse manager and educator in a variety of settings, most recently serving as dean of sciences and nursing at the College of the Florida Keys.

Miller chose a clarinet and tenor saxophone playing the melody together while the other saxophones provided harmony, with trumpets and trombones muted. In 1938, Miller formed his band that began breaking attendance records on the east coast. His romantic “Miller Sound” became so popular that from 1939 to 1943, Miller had 72 Top 10 records and 23 were No. 1 — more than Elvis or the Beatles had in their careers.

Today, the band has five saxophones, three trombones, three trumpets, a rhythm section of three (a piano, drums, and base) and one female vocalist. The band’s saxophonist/vocalist Eric Stabnau is the music director. He took the position a yearand-a-half ago after graduating from Syracuse University with a master’s in music.

“I like Glenn Miller’s music for its iconic swing sound,” Stabnau said. “Miller is still popular and widely recognized. I always wanted to travel and tour. We have 200 concerts a year all over the U.S., Canada, and almost every year in Japan for the past decade.”

Lauren and John Dunn are longtime season ticket holders. Lauren is a real estate agent and John has his own electrical business. In his free time, John likes to play the guitar and piano. Lauren comes to the concerts to support culture and arts, which she thinks are underappreciated.

“Music like this (Miller’s music) you cannot put into the headsets. You must come and experience it with a band playing live right in front of you,” John Dunn said. “This band amazes me that they keep the band going for that long. With Glenn Miller’s songs, you know it right away. Our relatives and family liked Miller’s music and passed it on to us from their generation”.

Miller is considered to be the father of the modern U.S. military bands. The band pays a special tribute to veterans at each concert. The musicians and audience expressed their gratitude to the veterans by applauding them. The band paid tribute to the veterans by playing the “American Patrol” song.

The band ended its concert with the “Moonlight Serenade,” with an extra addition of the “Farewell Blues.”

Girls basketball will finish out their final week of play before district playoffs begin on Jan. 31. The boys have an extra week of regular season games before their district playoff brackets are generated on Feb. 7.

The Lady Conchs and Lady Fins met in Key West on Jan. 20 in both teams’ only game for the week. Marathon beat Key West 53-20 in the nondistrict matchup. Marathon’s Abrianna Marshall led the scoring for the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Elena Eubank scored 13 and added 12 rebounds, and Marti’yana Kilborne added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

The Lady ’Canes made the most of their game at Mater Bay Academy on Jan. 17, beating the Rays 44-14. Brooke Mandozzi had 16 points and 8 rebounds in the game, Makayla Hahn had 10 points and 4 steals and Lea Castellanos had 6 points.

In boys basketball, Coral Shores has been busy wreaking havoc across South Florida. They added three to their win streak last week, bringing the total to seven and counting. On Jan. 17 they beat Mater Bay 75-28. Isaac Holmes had 14 points, Ayden Lane had 13 plus 7 rebounds and Artorious Johnson had 12 points with 7 rebounds. Allen Perez added 10 in the big win. The following night, the ’Canes took on MAST Academy and won another decisive contest, outscoring the Makos 71-31. Holmes had 21 of those points, followed by Matt St. Aubin with 13 and 7 rebounds and Isaac Rivera with 9 points, 7 assists and 2 steals. On Jan. 20, they played Everglades Prep, winning 57-38. St. Aubin had a massive game, scoring 23 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and adding 3 assists for the ‘Canes. AJ Putetti had 13 points and Holmes scored 12.

Head coach Jarrod Mandozzi attributed the ’Canes’ recent success to his team’s willingness to sacrifice and give their all, playing into the team motto: “Whatever It Takes.” He called his team’s win streak against some high-caliber teams “a perfect storm” of many things, including solid work ethic, teamwork and experience competing against some of the best teams on the east coast over the holiday break.

“I'm so happy for the guys and proud of them,” said Mandozzi. “This group is really committed and it shows.”

Marathon played two games last week, losing both but showing some sparks of a late season run.

On Jan. 17, they fell to Everglades Prep 57-32. Fisher Coleman-Sayer led the Fins with 8 points in the loss, while Oscar Garcia, Jesus Gonzalez and Adrian Cruz each scored 6. According to head coach Kevin Freeman, the Fins played well in the first half, heading to the locker room only down 31-20. But with only 6 points in the third quarter, Everglades pulled away for the 25-point win.

On Jan. 20, Marathon and Key West played one another in Conch territory. The Conchs came out on top, beating the Fins 59-33. James Osborne scored 13 points and Kevon Mills added 10 plus 7 rebounds in the victory. Earlier in the week, Key West fell to Sagemont 89-43. Kameron Roberts had 11 points and 6 rebounds. James Osborne added 10 points and Watson Chery had 10 rebounds in the Jan.17 loss.

On Jan. 18, the Coral Shores Lady ’Canes played host to an incounty rival in girls weightlifting, squaring off against the Lady Fins from Marathon. The Hurricanes made the most of their opportunity against a shorthanded Marathon roster, avenging their loss to Marathon from earlier in the month to emerge victorious in both the Olympic (66-60) and Traditional (76-61) competitions. The lifters will now look for a strong close to their seasons at the district championships in Miami on Saturday, Jan. 28.

Two Keys schools offer swimming as a varsity sport, and it is not surprising that a place surrounded by water has produced some of the top swimmers in the Sunshine State. Both Coral Shores and Key West made appearances at the state event this year, and many prep swimmers are underclassmen, providing a solid base for Monroe County swimming for the next several years of competition.

Recognizing several standouts in arguably the most fitting sport for an island chain, the Keys Weekly is proud to congratulate our 2022 All-Keys Swim Team.

EVAN OSIPOV Sophomore, Coral Shores

Only a sophomore, Osipov qualified for regionals in the 400 freestyle relay. In the regular season, he excelled in the 100 free and 100 backstroke events.

Searcy was a team captain for the Conchs, swimming the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke events in the regular season. He was a regional qualifier in the 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 200 free relay.

He looked toward the basket, leapt from the ground, heaved the ball into the air and watched it fall into the net.

The crowd went crazy.

“It felt pretty good,” seventh-grader Henry Rodriguez said with a grin.

It was the second quarter of the first game of the season. His school, Ocean Studies Charter School, was playing against another local middle school, Key Largo School. Parents, teachers and friends cheered from the sidelines.

The setting was not much different than any other first game of a middle school basketball season. But for this team and this school, they all witnessed history.

The 2022-23 Ocean Studies Charter School boys and girls basketball teams are the first sports teams in school history. And Rodriguez scored the school’s first points.

For several years, Kevin Cornaire had coached for Florida Keys Youth Basketball League, a co-ed recreational league. But with his twin girls, Natalie and Naiya, now in middle school, he wanted to see them play on an allgirls team. Willing to take on whatever responsibilities to make it happen, Cornaire proposed the idea of forming a school team to Ocean Studies.

“First we had to see how many girls were going to be interested,” Cor-

naire said. “My kids came home from school the next day and said, ‘We’re getting basketball.’ They already had a list of all the kids who wanted to play.”

Everything else quickly fell into place. Cornaire took the role of head coach of the girls team, and middle school math teacher Kevin Ferger became head coach of the boys team, with social studies teacher Chandler Day as the assistant on both teams. They ordered uniforms and came up with a team name – the Snappers, short for snapping turtles. They met for their first practices Oct. 4, 2022 and played their first games Nov. 15, 2022.

In the three months since the teams formed, the coaches have seen growth both on and off the court. Of the 11 girls and 10 boys, almost half had never played basketball before. The students who have experience are stepping out of their comfort zone to lead and encourage their teammates. The students who have not played before are transforming in their play and comfort level on the court.

“One student that has never touched a basketball before, when you see him out on the court now, you can see it in his eyes – he’s aggressive. He wants the ball,” Day said.

According to the coaches, the lessons the students are learning — leadership, perseverance, teamwork, motivation, sense of purpose, responsibility in upholding grades, time management — are what makes having a school basketball team so impactful at this middle school age.

“It’s totally different personalities from school to on the court,” Ferger said. “They may be quieter or goofy in

class and then they get on the court, and the eye of the tiger takes over and they’re all fired up and ready to go. It’s really cool to see them using all of their personality.”

Some students are taking academics more seriously, have a closer relationship to their coaches, and are finding a place to belong in school.

“It’s really helped build the community in our middle school,” Christi Daugherty, Rodriguez’s mother and middle school English teacher, said. “The girls team and the boys team, they’ve been so supportive and always pumping each other up. It’s awesome. It’s made a better family experience at the school.”

Despite these achievements, the Ocean Studies basketball team is still seeking its first win.

Not only is it a new program with many students who have never played before, Ocean Studies is a small school. It began its sixth grade middle school program only the year before and added the seventh and eighth grade programs this year. The entire middle school has fewer than 50 students. In addition, the teams are young. The girls team is only fifth and sixth graders, and the boys team has only one eighth grader. They play against the larger and more established programs at Plantation Key School, Key Largo School, Marathon and Treasure Village Montessori. Regardless of the record, they remain hopeful.

“I think what’s great about our team, and we’re even so surprised every time we hear them talk, is how positive they are remaining because it’s really hard, especially with the emotions of middle schoolers, to go through these losses but still remain positive and continue to push themselves in practices and games to get better,” Day said. “It’s really teaching them perseverance. It’s teaching them that they’re not in this alone. They have a team with them.”

The teams see a bright future.

“We’re going to come back next year, and we’re going to win some,” Rodriguez said. “Go, Ocean Studies.”

Island Community Church hosts event for student scholarships and ministries

Motorboats covered the fields at Island Community Church’s north campus for visitors to enjoy, board and buy during the Island Boat Show Jan. 20-22. The weekend raised over $50,000 for student scholarships and $65,000 for global and local ministries in 2022.

PIRATE BATTLE LEADS TO BLOODSHED

Aland-based highway mile, known as a statute mile, measures 5,280 feet. Water-based miles, called nautical miles, are a little bit longer and measure 6,076 feet, making the distance between Key West and Havana, Cuba, 105 statute miles. Based on the nautical mile, the distance is 91.24 miles.

On Nov. 7, 1822, the U.S. schooner Alligator sailed from Havana to Matanzas, about 50 statute miles east. The schooner sailed into the harbor at Matanzas on Nov. 8. No sooner had she dropped her anchor than Freeman Mayo, the master of the schooner Iris, boarded the vessel. He informed the captain of the Alligator, Lt. William H. Allen, that his ship and crew were being held for ransom. If he did not deliver $6,000 ($7,000 in some accounts) to the pirates the following day, his crew would be killed, and his ship burned.

Without hesitation, Lt. Allen committed the Alligator and its crew to the liberation of the Iris and whatever other vessels were being held. The Alligator left Matanzas and set a course for “Point Hycacos” to the east. At daylight, the Alligator dropped anchor off one of the islands near the entrance to Bahia de Cardenas. From their vantage point, they could see three vessels at anchor farther up the bay. A small schooner with its decks filled with men was sailing nearby.

Unable to navigate the bay’s shallows, the Alligator’s auxiliary ships were employed: a launch, cutter and a gig. Allen took command of the launch. Lt. Dale, his

second in command, took control of the cutter, and a midshipman and four other crew members boarded the gig. The men, using oars, began to paddle toward the ships.

One of the schooners at anchor was the pirate ship Revenge, armed with five cannons and a copper-colored hull. Because the wind was light, the men of the Revenge manned the ship’s oars and attempted to paddle the schooner deeper into the bay and away from Allen and the approaching marines. After rowing for two hours, a reported 3-4 leagues (11-12 miles), the Americans gained within striking distance of the schooner.

Thirty armed cutthroats manned the Revenge’s deck. The pirates hoisted a red flag. They fired a broadside of round and grapeshot, but the pirates’ aim proved wild, and none of the Alligator’s auxiliary ships suffered significant damage. On the contrary, as the marines drew closer, accurate musket fire began to cripple the pirate attack.

When a second pirate schooner appeared, the men of the Revenge abandoned their oars and worked to escape the schooner on long boats. Before they did, however, they took several bottles filled with gunpowder, inserted slowburning wicks through their corks, and lit them on fire. They planned to have the marines board the Revenge and take her for their prize, only to blow it up and take their lives.

FLORIDA KEYS HISTORY WITH BRAD BERTELLI

An author, speaker, Florida Keys historian and Honorary Conch. His latest book, “Florida Keys History with Brad Bertelli, Volume 1,” shares fascinating glimpses into the rich and sometimes surprising histories of the Florida Keys.

As the pirates attempted to escape to the other pirate schooner, Allen and Dale maneuvered their vessels, cut the pirates off, and forced them back to their schooner. They quickly extinguished the slow-burning fuses. As gunfire echoed across the water, the marines advanced on the Revenge, causing the pirates to abandon her again.

Securing the prize, Allen directed the midshipman and his crew of four to board the Revenge. Allen and Dale continued to chase down the pirates as they made their way to the second schooner. Her decks were crowded with 60 to 80 men armed with muskets, cutlasses and pikes. They opened fire on the marines.

Allen was struck in the head but continued to shout orders and support when he was struck a second time in the chest. He was not the only one shot in the pirate fight. The marines abandoned their chase and returned to collect their prize and the merchant ships that pirate forces had held. The pirates escaped.

Four hours later, Allen succumbed to his wounds and was one of four marines killed during the skirmish; three others were wounded. Allen’s dying wish was that the government would take care of his mother and sister. On Nov. 11, at Matanzas, Cuba’s lieutenant governor attended a ceremony for Allen, where he and the other marines were interred with military honors. They would learn that 14 pirates had been killed in the fight, including one of the horde’s captains.

Dale, Allen’s second in command, was the captain in charge of the Alligator when, at about 5 a.m. on Nov. 18, 1822, its sails were hoisted, and the schooner began the slow move away from Matanzas, Cuba, on the final mission of the ship’s brief but storied career.

There would be one more casualty among the Alligator’s crew.

All would survive when the ship wrecked against the Matecumbe Reef at about 9:30 p.m. the following day. Three days after wrecking on the reef, the crew of the Alligator was rescued by the Ann Maria, one of the ships it had saved during the pirate fight. Sadly, while sailing between the Matecumbe Reef and Charleston, South Carolina, the Alligator’s cook, Hector Williams, fell overboard and was pronounced lost at sea.

Today, the Alligator wreck site is recognized as Alligator Reef and is home to the second tallest of the lights marking the Florida Reef, Alligator Reef Lighthouse.

KIDS CLEAN KEYS THROUGH SOME COMPETITION

Upper Keys kids will take to the coastlines for the third annual Marine Debris Derby, hosted by Ocean Studies Charter School, on Saturday, Jan. 28. Caribbean Club, Mile Marker 104, will host the event to allow for landbased and water-based entries. STATE PARK HOSTS NATIVE PLANT DAY

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park are holding the annual Native Plant Day on Saturday, Jan. 28 (Heavy rain date will be the following Saturday, Feb. 4.)

Nursery volunteers from Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock will have an information booth where visitors can learn the importance of native plants, propagating and caring for native plants and planting butterfly gardens. Native plants, raised by the nursery volunteers, will be given away for planting at Keys’ residences. By giving residents native plants, the event aims to increase awareness regarding the importance of growing natives in the Florida Keys’ delicate environment.

The event will include a speaker on planting natives for Florida Keys yards. Keys residents who attend the talk will be given a chance in a drawing to receive an extra native plant.

There will be two 45-minutelong nature trail walks through the tropical hardwood hammock at 10:30 and 11 a.m., as well as two half-hour butterfly garden tours at 10:30 and 11 a.m. All are limited to 15 participants each, on a first-come, first-served, basis.

MOTION OF THE OCEAN

Tips to avoid seasickness

The Florida Keys waters had a couple of bumpy days. Reports back from the captains stated numerous fish were being fed.

What this means is that motion sickness grabbed hold of some divers, and they “fed the fish.” The Keys have many industries that deal with seasickness (a form of motion sickness): fishing, diving, snorkeling and eco charters to name a few. Dealing with customers’ seasickness is a part of our daily routine in the dive industry. Seasickness occurs when your brain can’t make sense of information sent from your eyes, ears and body. Lots of motion — in a car, airplane, boat or even an amusement park ride — can make you feel queasy, clammy or sick to your stomach, causing some people to vomit.

Your brain receives signals from motionsensing parts of your body, eyes, inner ears, muscles and joints. When these parts send conflicting information, your brain doesn’t know whether you’re stationary or moving.

is the owner, captain and instructor at Islamorada Dive Center and Florida Keys Dive Center. He specializes in scuba, rebreather, spearfishing and captaining in the Florida Keys.

Your brain’s confused reaction makes you feel sick. Some people are more susceptible to seasickness than others. And some people have more severe reactions than others. The sickness can be so severe that it keeps them from ever even considering getting on a rocking boat. Science, however, has blessed us with some remedies that can lower your chances of seasickness or ease symptoms if they occur.

Here are a few actions you can take if seasickness is, unfortunately, a part of your life:

Herbs: Breathe in soothing mint, ginger or lavender scents. Suck on hard candies made with peppermint or ginger. Diet and drink: Drink plenty of water. Choose low-fat, bland, starchy foods before traveling. Avoid heavy meals and greasy, spicy or acidic foods that can upset your stomach. Don’t drink alcohol or smoke.

Fresh air: Direct air vents to blow toward you. Roll down car windows. Distant gaze: Put down the phone, tablet or book. Instead, look at an object in the distance or at the horizon.

Lie back: Recline, if possible, and close your eyes.

Pressure points: Wear acupressure wristbands.

Boat: Sit in the middle of the boat on the upper deck.

CHEERS TO I.CARE

I.CARE, or Islamorada Conservation and Restoration Education, celebrated its twoyear anniversary this week. In those two years, I.CARE has educated more than 2,000 individuals on the Florida Reef Tract and have taken 1,814 recreational divers to outplant six different species of coral. Come join them this week as they educate more divers and plant more corals right here in Islamorada.

OVER-THE-COUNTER REMEDIES:

Antihistamines: Commonly used to treat allergies, antihistamines can also prevent motion sickness and ease symptoms. Only antihistamines that cause drowsiness are effective. Nondrowsy formulas won’t help. The more common ones are Dramamine and Bonine.

Patches: Scopolamine skin patches or oral pills prevent nausea and vomiting. You stick the patch behind your ear at least four hours before traveling. After three days, you remove the patch and apply a new one. This medication can cause dry mouth and is only approved for adults.

I know seasickness can be a debilitating occurrence but don’t give up. Try some of these techniques and meds to keep enjoying activities on or under the water.
