KEY WEST OFFICIALS ADD 2 FINALISTS FOR CITY MANAGER JOB

5 CANDIDATES NOW WILL BE INVITED FOR INTERVIEWS

Now there are five — finalists, that is, for the Key West city manager job.

The city commission on Jan. 18 added two names to the list of three finalists recommended by the appointed search committee.

At the Jan. 18 city commission meeting, officials added applicants Lisa Hendrickson and Albert Childress to the previous list of David Burke, Thaddeus Cohen and Abe Conn.

Some search committee members, each of whom was appointed by the mayor or a city commissioner, failed to follow the instructions they were given, which was to select three candidates from the list of nine finalists compiled by search consultant Dona Higginbotham.

“Not all members selected three candidates,” Higginbotham told the commission on Jan. 18.

Commissioner Mary Lou Hoover said, “I don’t know how we got some members recommending two names, some recommending four and one only recommending one candidate. It seems that would skew the tally.”

Higginbotham confirmed that the committee members were instructed to select three candidates, possibly four, but no fewer than three.

“We always hope people will do as they’re asked, but some did not,” Higginbotham said.

Mayor Teri Johnston acknowledged that the process “didn’t seem like rocket science.”

Nevertheless, Commissioner Sam Kaufman suggested the commission move forward with the addition of Hendrickson and Childress to the list of

candidates who will be invited to Key West for interviews next month.

The commission is expected to make its final decision on the next city manager on Feb. 15. Interviews will include public receptions that enable residents and business owners to meet the final five candidates.

Childress worked for Doral, Florida for 16 years, most recently serving as its city manager for two years. Before that, Childress was the code compliance director for Miami from 19962005.

Hendrickson has served as assistant city manager of Pinellas Park, a city of over 53,000 residents, from 2020 to 2022. She is also a human resources administrator.

Conn, a retired U.S. Army colonel, served three one-year tours in Afghanistan as a battalion commander and colonel in command of the Army Liaison Team there. He also worked for 26 years as a senior special agent for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Key West, according to his application.

Cohen is an architect by trade who formerly worked as Key West’s planning director. He is now a project manager for MBR Construction in

Fort Lauderdale. From 2017 to 2021, he worked as a department head in charge of growth management for Collier County, Florida, his application states.

Burke is a retiring Navy captain who most recently has served as chief of staff for JIATF-South, the military’s elite Joint Interagency Task Force headquartered at Truman Annex in Key West. He and his family have lived in Key West since 2020 and consider the island their permanent home, his application states.

KEY WEST AIRPORT HAS $1.6B ECONOMIC IMPACT

TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS COMPLETE AVIATION STUDY

SYMPHONY GETS $10K FROM NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

Florida Department of Transportation’s new Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study values Key West International Airport’s total economic impact at $1.6 billion, up from $857 million in its 2019 report.

The FDOT profile attributes more than 11,000 jobs to EYW when including the visitor spending component, supplier sales and other jobs that result directly and indirectly from the airport’s success. FDOT also attributes a $527 million payroll to EYW, which reflects the total compensation for work, including gross wages, salaries, employerprovided benefits, and taxes paid to the government on behalf of employees. The full report is expected to be published in April.

Richard Strickland, director of airports, gave Monroe County Commissioners an overview of the report at the regular meeting of the BOCC on Jan. 18.

“Once again, these numbers reflect continued growth at Key West International Airport. The future is bright,” he said.

In 2022, 1.4 million passengers traveled through EYW, topping 2019’s record of 969,069 thanks to growing service.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), celebrating 25 years of musical performance, has been approved by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for a $10,000 grant to support its educational initiative, “Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success.”

This grant is one of 1,251 grants for arts projects awards totaling nearly $28.8 million that were announced by the NEA as part of its first round of fiscal 2023 grants.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects in communities nationwide,” said NEA chair Maria Rosario Jackson. “Projects such as South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success’ strengthen arts and cultural ecosystems, provide equitable opportunities for arts participation and practice, and contribute to the health of our communities and our economy.”

Through multimedia, props, costumes and narration, SFSO’s musicians, led by music educator Donna Wissinger, shine a light on the plight of Florida’s more than 350 miles of coral reef in the “Preserving Our Coral Reef: Teams of Success” initiative. Wissinger explains the environmental stressors that have created the precarious situation and brings hope for the future with the concept of coral micro-fragmentation, a process discovered by marine scientist David Vaughan, in which a large healthy coral can be broken into smaller pieces. These plugs quickly grow into larger corals and are transplanted back onto the reef. The program is set to an emotional score by composer Robert Kerr.

“South Florida Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to receive this meaningful grant for the first time which will allow us to continue our mission of educating future generations of ecological preservationists, explorers and musicians,” said Jacqueline Lorber, president and CEO of South Florida Symphony Orchestra. “This initiative, set to tour in the tri-county area, is part of our ongoing commitment to Symphony in the Schools, which focuses on critical STEAM programming. ‘Preserving Our Coral Reef’ may just inspire the next Jacques Cousteau.”

The program was scheduled for Coral Shores and Key West high schools on Jan. 26 & 27 and the Miami Beach Bandshell on Feb. 28. Additional dates in Broward and beyond will be announced.

Since its founding, SFSO’s signature music education program, Symphony in the Schools, has reached over 100,000 students from underserved communities and has provided more than $3.5 million in services and resources in the past five years. The curriculum uses thematic music education programming including a ‘Power of Perseverance’ presentation highlighting impactful young people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds who strive to make a difference, and masterclass components that work with children side-by-side to improve musicianship.

SCOTT ADDRESSES KEYS MIGRANT CRISIS KEYS LEGISLATORS SEEK ANNUAL $20 MILLION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

Environmental Protection, and then sent to local municipalities to use for projects including stormwater and canal restoration.

The Senate’s Environment and Natural Resources Committee passed the bill on Jan. 17 via a 9-0 vote. Rodriguez, who serves as committee chair, said the bill’s passage through the first committee is “groundbreaking.” But Rodriguez said the bill has a long road to become law.

Amid an explosion in migrant landings in the Florida Keys to begin the new year, Marathon received a visit from U.S. Sen. Rick Scott on Jan. 19 for a press conference regarding the ongoing border security crises affecting South Florida communities.

Scott’s appearance at the Marathon airport was preceded by a briefing from U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Air and Marine Operations regarding the current situation and local response to the extreme migrant influx in recent weeks. The senator’s visit also included a boat tour earlier in the day to view dozens of migrant vessels dotting the Keys’ shorelines.

“The Biden administration has got to be clear that we’re going to enforce our immigration laws, we’re going to enforce our asylum laws, we’re going to secure our borders,” Scott told reporters.

“What I heard and saw during my briefing and tour … makes me furious and is absolutely heartbreaking. Our brave law enforcement officers … are doing everything they can to keep our communities safe, but this administration has completely abandoned them.”

Scott’s conference joined a chorus of requests from local, state and federal leaders for a stronger response to the record landings. In the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, 2022, Coast Guard crews interdicted a record 6,182 Cuban migrants before reaching shore. They are already on pace to smash that record in less than six months, with 4,881 migrants interdicted from Oct. 1, 2022 to Jan. 4.

On Jan. 6, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a 60-day state of emergency

and signed Executive Order 23-03, activating the Florida National Guard and other agencies to provide resources in support of local governments responding to the migrant spike.

Scott’s press conference comes on the heels of an influx of equipment and personnel in recent weeks from multiple military and law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, FWC Law Enforcement, Florida Highway Patrol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida National Guard.

On Jan. 5, President Joe Biden announced a new U.S. policy that will accept 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The program is a pivot away from previous policies that would allow migrants who reached land to stay in the country as they waited for asylum hearings – a wait currently averaging 4.3 years, as reported by CNN on Dec. 26.

As of the same date, nearly 1.6 million asylum applications were currently pending – the largest number ever on record, according to an analysis of federal data by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.

“Do not just show up at the border. Stay where you are and apply legally from there,” Biden said. “Starting today, if you don’t apply through the legal process you will not be eligible for this new parole program.”

“We want to send a message out to these third-world countries about the changes in the policy now, which no longer allows you to come here and be released,” Ramsay said in the press conference. “You’re going to be put in secure detention until you’re sent back to your home country. We want those people to know that before they try to come here, so they can make that decision whether it’s worthwhile.”

Legislators in the Florida House and Senate are beginning to file funding requests and proposed policy changes as a 60-day session in Tallahassee starts March 7. Committees are gathering to consider bills, including one proposal recently filed by Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez to obtain millions in annual funding for a key Florida Keys program.

Legislation sponsored by Mooney and Rodriguez, House Bill 135 and Senate Bill 54, requests $20 million annually for the Florida Keys Stewardship Act that funds nearshore water projects and acquisition of environmentallysensitive land. Funds would be issued to the state Department of

“As the bill sponsor, I could not be happier and I will continue to work tirelessly to get this legislation over the finish line,” she said.

Stewardship Act funding fluctuated year-to-year since its passage in 2016. Legislators representing the Keys, going back to former state Rep. Holly Raschein and former state Sen. Anitere Flores, fought each session to secure as much money as possible in the budget.

In the first year, $5 million was allocated for water projects and land acquisition. A year later, the legislature approved $13.3 million. Stewardship Act funds totaled $10 million in 2018 and $11 million in 2019.

Financial losses from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 resulted in Gov. Ron DeSantis cutting $1 billion for programs, including $10 million from the Stewardship Act. By 2021, full funding was granted for the program, with $20 million for water quality projects and $5 million for land acquisition.

“The main goal is just get it out of the begging mode every year,” Mooney said regarding the latest proposal.

Full funding for the Stewardship Act sits atop the legislative priorities for Monroe County in the upcoming session. Funds awarded to Keys municipalities can’t be used for wastewater projects, according to the proposal. Legislation was referred to the House and Senate’s Agriculture & Natural Resources Appropriations committees.

The bill would need to pass through the House and Senate before the governor considers signing it into law.

After finishing as the regional runner-up at the Regional Championships Jan. 2122, Key West High School’s competitive cheer squad has advanced straight to the state finals. The rules require a team to score above 60 to compete in the semifinal round at state. As Key West scored above 70 and was second in the region, they’ll go straight to the final round. “We have 2½ minutes to do our best on the mat, and the cheerleaders are ready to give it their all in the state finals, which take place Friday, Feb. 3 in Gainesville,” coach Tiffany Hughes said. “The routine is fast-paced with elite stunts and pyramids as well as a crowd-engaging cheer and energetic dance,” Hughes said. “The athletes have worked hard throughout the season and are ready to bring home a state championship.” CONTRIBUTED

MILES TO GO BEFORE GPS… WE JUST GOT LOST

A machine replaced me. Hallelujah. I couldn’t be happier.

I am no longer responsible for road-trip navigation, having happily outsourced the (non-paying) job to the satellite-directed voice that lives in my phone and car. (To be clear, I was entirely ill-suited and unqualified for the position.)

That GPS voice reads maps, gives definitive directions and suggests alternative routes. It’s been a game changer for the navigationally challenged community.

I grew up with those intricately folded regional road maps, trying to pinpoint a) our current location; b) our desired destination and c) a suitable correction.

There was no GPS, Google Maps, Waze app or location services. We had only the paper maps and anecdotal instructions from gas station attendants (and other customers in line) who tried their best to send us in the right direction.

But let’s not let the nostalgia of simpler times distort the truth.

How many road trips nearly ended in divorce or disaster before GPS started guiding our travels? How many lengthy detours did we endure before that capable computer voice took charge?

The retrieval of a map from the glove compartment inevitably meant things would get worse before better, and they were clearly already falling apart. You don’t consult a map when you KNOW where you are and where you’re going. We only unfolded it once we were already lost, stuck in traffic, rerouted by construction or bewildered by the directions we’d written on the back of some envelope.

By then, the driver was pissed and the passenger was in a losing position, facing a microscopic, multicolored spider web of intersecting roads. There was no way to zoom in. We couldn’t Google a location or expect an orbiting satellite to pinpoint our planetary location.

I CAN read a map. I can figure out whether we need to turn left or right. I can figure out where the turnpike intersects the side roads. I can discern a major highway versus a county road that’s likely littered with traffic lights. Eventually.

But I can’t do ANY of those things while blowing past every exit and highway sign at 75 mph with an overwrought driver demanding instant directions.

We navigators often sought reassurance that we were reading things correctly while the driver frantically called out exit numbers and road names as we flew by.

The driver couldn’t look away from the road to consult the map we were forever trying to shove in their face, and yet they refused to slow down or pull over for a brief conference, ensuring the car went farther off course.

The tension invariably thickened. Voices tightened. Exasperated sighs filled the car, until someone

(usually me) gave up. I’d crumple the map into the backseat, prepared at that moment to start a new life wherever we happened to be.

Finally, the driver would acquiesce and pull over to regroup and consult the map together. The navigator, still a bit huffy, would smugly enjoy the driver’s difficulty in interpreting the same spider web of roadways.

Say what you will about simpler times, but I’m not willing to go back to the time before GPS. Ever.

Those satellites in geosynchronous orbit led Stan and me to and around Tampa last weekend for an utterly fantastic wedding. They found our AirBnB. They rerouted us around gridlock on I-75 (or tried to, as people kept crashing into each other).

I’m no longer the one saying we’d missed our turn. The GPS voice tells Stan to do a U-turn, then instantly figures out where we are, where we went wrong and where we’re supposed to be.

And when all’s going smoothly again, there’s time to play the “GPS challenge.” That’s what I call the driver’s innate desire to “trick” the satellites, speed up and outrun its estimated time of arrival.

“Sure, we’ll get there at 8 p.m. IF we go 65 mph. But we can do better. We can beat that.”

Shaving a minute or two off the predicted ETA is cause for celebration on a road trip.

I thought last weekend, it’d be funny if the GPS responded to us like a real person.

“Hey, dumbass, I TOLD you to turn left. Ding ding. Rerouting. Now ya gotta do a U-ey. Good luck with that on this divided highway, ya chump.”

“OK, tough guy. I see you speeding up. I’ll give you a few extra minutes. I’ll update your arrival time. But guess what? There’s congestion up ahead that’s gonna slow ya down. You can’t see it now, but I know it all, and a sea of brake lights in three miles will knock you down a peg.”

Yes, times have changed, and when it comes to road trips, I’m thrilled to have been replaced by technology.

Why: One of the better sci-fi TV shows of recent years is “The Expanse.” Even better is its source material, a series of novels by James S.A. Corey (a pen name for a pair of writers).

“Leviathan Wakes” is the first in the series, and it’s a series you should read in order. These books are good old-fashioned space operas with life-threatening interplanetary peril at every turn, even as the characters are coping with basic human questions. One of the writers formerly worked as an assistant to George R.R. Martin; like A Song of Ice And Fire, the books are built on chapters from alternating characters’ point of view. Unlike Martin, these guys managed to turn around their books in a timely manner – even after TV took an interest! – so you won’t be left hanging as we are in (book-version) “Westeros.”

KEY WEST WEEKLY / JANUARY 26, 2023 10

The school district has 18 months to find its next superintendent.

Superintendent Theresa Axford retires in July 2024, and school board members face a decision: National search, internal promotion or national search then internal promotion.

Four public speakers at the Jan. 24 school board meeting — some representing conservative political organizations — urged the board to conduct a national search for the next superintendent.

Christine Miller of Big Pine Key told the school board to hire a superintendent who “will bring prayer and God back to schools,” “post The 10 Commandments in every classroom,” “ban the LGBTQ agenda from all curricula” and still promote “the vision and values of our community.”

Marathon resident John Strickland simply told the board, “I want you to perform a national search for the superintendent.”

The topic wasn’t on the agenda for the school board’s meeting in Marathon, and the board did not discuss the superintendent succession plan.

Axford has been with the school district for nearly 35 years and was the longtime principal of Sugarloaf School, then Key West

High School. She was the district’s executive director of teaching and learning until July 2020, when the board appointed her superintendent in a tumultuous time.

The pandemic was raging; the previous superintendent, Mark Porter, had decided not to renew his contract; and the district had just lost its longtime finance director.

In other news

The school district received a five-year, $8.9 million mental health grant that will fund nine additional social workers and provide at least one for every school, Erin WIlliams, the district’s coordinator of student support, told the board on Jan. 24.

Currently, WIlliams said, some schools are sharing social workers, and the grant will place at least one in every school, and two or three in larger schools.

It also will fund foreign language training for the social workers, as only one of the district’s six current social workers is bilingual. Emphasis will be placed on Spanish and Creole, Williams said, though board chair Andy Griffiths pointed out that more than 30 different languages are spoken at Key West’s Horace O’Bryant Middle School. Williams agreed, and added that 120 languages are spoken throughout the district.

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD MEET...

SUSIE PUSKEDRA DOES WHAT SHE LOVES WHERE SHE BELONGS

Over the past 11 years, Susie Puskedra has given treasure-hunting a whole new meaning for Lower Keys islanders. When a house is sold and the owners need help disposing of the goods inside, Susie’s Key West Estate Sales makes it happen, ultimately recycling everything from fine antique furniture and high-end linens to “a half bottle of Windex.”

And lots of art. This weekend’s estate sale took place at a house that contained works by Dalva Duarte, Michael Palmer, Sandford Birdsey, Dick Matson and, oddly, me.

The business formula for the sales is always the same, but the stuff is always changing. Last week Puskedra had a house full of art deco and mid-century modern accessories. Two weeks prior, it was 1800s French antiques.

“The woman’s grandmother was an antique dealer in France,” she says. “I was so much in heaven, I didn’t want that sale to end.”

Antiques are part of Puskedra’s DNA. Before moving to Key West from Chicago in 2010, Puskedra was an antiques dealer who owned her own shop — a passion inspired by growing up in her grandparents’ home.

“I lived in a real small town that had farm auctions where somebody’s whole life and a century’s worth of goods would be put out on a hay rack and auctioned off.”

Estate sales provided inventory for her shop and revealed a new direction.

“Conducting estate sales is much more fastpaced and interesting,” she said.

Her team sorts, stages, researches and prices everything left on the property. Then it’s all about advertising — online, in print and on the radio. The sales take place Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. (Occasionally, a second sale takes place the same day, but at a different house from 3 to 6 p.m.)

“The best part of my job is that I get to wake up in paradise every day, work with my best friends and do something I absolutely love,” she said.

What’s your superpower? Bringing people together and building relationships.

Who’s your hero? My hero will always be my Mother. She faced incredible challenges and always did it with grace and a smile. (Actually, it was more like a smirk.)

Words to live by? When I came here, I said, ‘I don’t want to just live in Key West, I want to become part of Key West.’ Now I realize and say all the time, ‘My soul belongs here.’

Show up to a sale on Friday and get first dibs on the estate items at full price. On Saturdays, items are up to half off. Be prepared to stand in line with up to 125 other people to peruse the treasures as Puskedra and her team let several people in as others leave.

“We get a mania going,” she said. “I have been told many times I should write a book, but the things people want to know, the things we’ve seen, I would never get another sale if I told those tales. We are very respectful of our clients’ privacy and quirks. You wouldn’t even believe some of the things, anyway.”

As a reminder, this is no yard sale, so don’t even think about haggling.

“People come up to me and say, “I’ll give you this much,” and I’ll say, “No, no. I put research into this. I set the prices,” Puskedra said.

Like the painting by Vietnamese artist Le Pho that Puskedra sold online for $50,211.

“The owner would have sold that to an interior decorator for $1,000 or $2,000, not knowing what it was worth,” she says. “That’s why you use us.”

Puskedra charges 40% of the final total. But the property owners come out much better than if they did it on their own. And anything left is donated to the Salvation Army. When the trash is taken out, “the house is left empty and broom clean,” she says.

“We crack up when people ask us if we have ‘real jobs’ during the week,” she said.

In Puskedra’s “down time,” she raises monarch butterflies and grows orchids, helps run the monthly Girls’ Night Out events, and is a mentor for the Take Stock In Children program.

“It’s one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done,” she says. “I recommend it to anyone who wants to truly make a difference in their own life, as well as someone else’s.”

She also helps raise money for the Scleroderma Foundation each year.

“Our event this year is Feb.10 at Aqua’s Sidebar and we have some incredible surprise auction gifts. Please join us,” she added.

For Puskedra, Key West’s community of people reminds her of her hometown in Rock Falls, Illinois.

“If you peel back the layers of the tourists, the bars, the many social events and such, this is a very family-oriented, loving community where people actually care about each other. It is a great place to raise children and to grow old.”

A better, personalized approach to cancer treatment.

At Miami Cancer Institute and Lynn Cancer Institute, partners in Baptist Health Cancer Care, we know that the sooner treatment begins after a cancer diagnosis, the better the chances of success. We also know that cancer can behave very differently from one patient to another. So we invest in research and medical innovation to provide the latest advancements in cancer science. This approach allows our oncologists to determine the best course of action based on a patient’s unique genetic makeup. This gives us better opportunities to improve patient care, especially for those who don’t respond to traditional treatments. That’s the level of personalized, expert care our patients deserve, delivered with the heart of Baptist Health.

Don’t delay care. Better cancer care is here. MiamiCancerInstitute.com

... is a photographer, writer, and semi-professional birdwatcher. He has lived in Key West for more than 25 years and may no longer be employable in the real world. He is also executive director of the Florida Keys Audubon Society.

ANY ANI WILL DO

Ilove smooth-billed anis, despite the fact that every time I hear the word “ani,” it triggers the song “Sugar” by The Archies in my head. Only instead of hearing, “Sugar… oh honey, honey,” I hear, “Ani… oh ani, ani.” And the voice that sings it sounds more like George Harrison singing, “My Sweet Lord” than it does the guy who sang for The Archies. (I blame this on a small number of head injuries in my youth.)

I bring this up because the song has been in my head for a week or so, ever since one was reported at Fort Zachary Taylor. I couldn’t get over there when I saw the first report of the bird, and I didn’t expect it to stick around. But a few days later I got a text from Kevin Christman telling me he was at the park, looking at the bird.

It took me an hour to get there – Saturday morning after a late night – and by the time I did, the bird was gone. We combed the park, but without a lot of luck. I figured if I got there earlier in the morning in the next day or so, I might still have a chance of seeing it.

Anis are on the weirder end of the songbird spectrum. They’re actually closely related to cuckoos, though where most cuckoos tend to be shy and receding, with muted, earth-toned plumage, anis are larger and more gregarious, with iridescent black plumage and a cartoonishly high aquiline arc to their bill. They are essentially the goth kids of the taxonomic family, a notion that isn’t diminished by the fact that their call sounds like an ‘80s electronic simulation of what a bird call might sound like.

The word “ani,” by the way, is pronounced on-ee. It came from the Tupi tribe of the upper Amazon Basin sans further etymology. “Smooth-billed” is in contrast with the closely-related groove-billed ani, though as far as I can tell, the smooth-billed ani is the only bird in the world with the word “smooth” in the name. How many species get their own adjective?

They’re usually seen in pairs or small groups. (One account I read said they were often seen “in larger groups of up to 17 individuals,” which made me think, What, no one’s ever seen a group of 18 or more anis? Such a specific number.)

The smooth-billed ani is a tropical and subtropical species, with a range that covers the Caribbean and South America. They were very rare in Florida until the 1930s, but their population grew rapidly, breeding as far north on the east coast as Titusville, and as far south as Key West.

I remember sometime around 2002 or so, sitting in a classroom at Fairchild Tropical Garden, taking the Florida Master Naturalist course, looking out the window, and seeing my first one. It was running across the ground with a Cuban anole in its mouth, the anole’s tail whipping around while its limbs pawed at the air. It looked more like the stop-motion “Release the Kraken!” scene from Clash of the Titans to me than it did an actual bird trying to ingest its necessary daily caloric intake.

I saw my first one in Key West soon after, at Indigenous Park. It was in a small cluster of mangroves toward the bocce courts. And I have looked for an ani in that same cluster of mangroves every time I’ve been in the park since then, with no further luck.

Fairchild was one of the more reliable spots for them, as was Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, Flamingo in Everglades National Park, and the service roads near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. But then those populations began to decline, their numbers shrinking until they disappeared from those places. (In 2005 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was petitioned to consider protected status for the species, but essentially blew it off.)

Nobody really knows what happened to the birds. There’s not a lot of data. Some birders blamed it on development and changes in the landscape. But smooth-billed anis are not delicate creatures, habitat-wise. In Central America and the Caribbean, you often see them in the weediest lots and the scrubbiest habitats, often in some of the most human-altered landscapes. And the anis pretty much came in and found their eco-niche in South Florida coincident with the development era.

Over the years since, though, I’ve seen smooth-billed anis in the Lower Keys a number of times, in out-of-the-way places such as Sugarloaf Key and the Dry Tortugas. My most memorable sighting was out at the Marquesas, when I saw a group of six, which gave me a lot of hope. Maybe there still was a resident flock or family here. But I’ve been back there since, and I’ve asked everyone I know who’s ever fished out there, and there has been no sign of them.

The theory I’ve heard about their decline that makes the most sense to me is, maybe some kind of deadly-to-them virus or communicable disease went through the South Florida population – an ani pandemic of sorts – which would explain the population crash and the fact that when I’ve seen them, it’s mostly been in out-ofthe-way, isolated places – places a virus or communicable disease may have passed by. But that is just a theory with, again, not much data to support it.

I went back to the park early this week and spent a lot of time staring at the bush near the moat where it was last seen. Then I walked out across the field, a.k.a. the Back 40, then looped around the park, looking into every bush I could, without much luck.

I may not go back to look for that particular bird again, but I will go back, and I will keep looking. I never want the last smooth-billed ani I saw to be the last smooth-billed ani I see.

KEY WEST POLICE CHIEF SWEARS IN PROMOTED OFFICERS VAZQUEZ

AND MALSHEIMER EARN NEW RANKS

A GOOD-NEWS STORY

Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg last week swore in a newly promoted lieutenant and a newly promoted sergeant. Lt. Bill Vazquez was promoted from special investigations sergeant to night watch patrol lieutenant. Sgt. Karl Malsheimer was promoted from general case detective to night watch sergeant.

Both men were born and raised in Key West. Vazquez joined the department in 2012 and is following in his father Alfredo Vazquez’s shoes in law enforcement. Capt. Alfredo Vazquez retired from the Key West Police Department after 30 years of service.

Malsheimer came to the department in 2011 and has

served with distinction. Both he and Vazquez have garnered numerous commendations, including the Life Saving Award.

“Lt. Vazquez and Sgt. Malsheimer have earned these positions,” said Brandenburg. “I’m proud of their service and have full confidence in their leadership of the men and women of the Key West Police Department.”

KEY WEST KID WINS NEW

BIKE & DONATES IT TO ANOTHER KID

Stories like these do the heart good.

Local kids were asked to design a logo for this year’s Paddle for Paws, a leisurely kayak and paddleboard trip off Cudjoe Key that raised money for the Florida Keys SPCA.

Michael Barrett, a 10-year-old fifth grader at Poinciana Elementary School, won first place for his drawing of a cat and a dog paddling a kayak together.

His prize? A brand new bike and helmet that were donated by the Big Pine Bicycle Center.

“I was so surprised that I won first place and a new bike,” Michael told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 23. “But I already have a bike, and I thought that there must be a kid who needs this one way more than me. So I decided to donate it.”

With help from his parents, Michael contacted the Southernmost Boys & Girls Club, which provides affordable after-school care for more than 100 local kids.

Michael Barrett, 10, won first place in an art contest to design the logo for this year’s Paddle for Paws fundraiser for the SPCA.

On Jan. 23, Michael and his mom took the bike to the club at Bayview Park and donated it to a beaming Keion Hodges.

“He seemed really, really happy. It’s a great bike. I think he had wanted a bike for Christmas, but didn’t get one. So I felt really good about donating it. I just knew someone else needed a bike more than me, because I already have one.”

hy are so many Key West Conch sports fans now rooting for the Tennessee Titans?

Because the Titans’ new general manager, Ran Carthon, was — and always will be — a Key West Conch.

The Titans made the announcement earlier this month, though Carthon currently remains busy as director of player personnel with the San Francisco 49ers, as their postseason play continues.

Carthon, who turns 42 on Feb. 10, was a running back for Key West High School.

He graduated in 1999. As a junior in 1998, “he rushed for more than 1,300 yards and gained over 500 yards DESPITE missing seven games due to high ankle sprain,” Carthon’s high school coach, Jerry Hughes, told the Keys Weekly on Jan. 24.

“In my 40-plus years of coaching high school football, I have been blessed to have coached some superior athletes and outstanding young men who have made my coaching career rewarding and satisfying,” Hughes said. “Ran Carthon is one of these exceptional student athletes.

“My first conversation with Ran was very impressive (eye contact, firm handshake, speaking with confidence), all attributable to his family’s military background and the parental guidance he received while growing up,” Hughes continued. “When observing Ran on the practice field, my feelings grew even stronger due to his work ethic, leadership and athletic abilities.”

Carthon received a football scholarship to the University of Florida, where he was a running back.

He signed with the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2004. He played for three seasons in the NFL with the Colts and Detroit Lions, according to Wikipedia.

After his NFL career was over, he returned to Gainesville, and graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 2008.

SInce 2008, he has worked in executive positions for the Atlanta Falcons, St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers before being hired as the Titans’ GM this month.

“I am so proud of Ran for being consistent, determined and relentless in pursuing his ultimate goal,” Hughes said, “all with the ‘attitude of a champion.’ GO TITANS!”

Bill Spottswood, whose son Billy went to high school with Carthon, was proud to have Carthon list him as a mentor on his resume.

“He was over here all the time,” Bill Spottswood said. “He still calls me Pops. He said, ‘You were tough on me, but you were tough on your own kids, too, and you loved me.’”

Spottswood credited much of Carthon’s collaborative spirit, communication skills and team mindset to his time in Key West.

Carthon is the NFL’s eighth black general manager.

Two Keys schools offer swimming as a varsity sport, and it is not surprising that a place surrounded by water has produced some of the top swimmers in the Sunshine State. Both Coral Shores and Key West made appearances at the state event this year, and many prep swimmers are underclassmen, providing a solid base for Monroe County swimming for the next several years of competition.

Recognizing several standouts in arguably the most fitting sport for an island chain, the Keys Weekly is proud to congratulate our 2022 All-Keys Swim Team.

KEYS HOOPS HEADING DOWN THE FINAL STRETCH BEFORE DISTRICTS Hurricanes Seal 7-Game Win Streak

Girls basketball will finish out their final week of play before district playoffs begin on Jan. 31. The boys have an extra week of regular season games before their district playoff brackets are generated on Feb. 7.

The Lady Conchs and Lady Fins met in Key West on Jan. 20 in both teams’ only game for the week. Marathon beat Key West 53-20 in the nondistrict matchup. Marathon’s Abrianna Marshall led the scoring for the game with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 3 steals. Elena Eubank scored 13 and added 12 rebounds, and Marti’yana Kilborne added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

The Lady ’Canes made the most of their game at Mater Bay Academy on Jan. 17, beating the Rays 44-14. Brooke Mandozzi had 16 points and 8 rebounds in the game, Makayla Hahn had 10 points and 4 steals and Lea Castellanos had 6 points.

In boys basketball, Coral Shores has been busy wreaking havoc across South Florida. They added three to their win streak last week, bringing the total to seven and counting. On Jan. 17 they beat Mater Bay 75-28. Isaac Holmes had 14 points, Ayden Lane had 13 plus 7 rebounds and Artorious Johnson had 12 points with 7 rebounds. Allen Perez added 10 in the big win. The following night, the ’Canes took on MAST Academy and won another decisive contest, outscoring the Makos 71-31. Holmes had 21 of those points, followed by Matt St. Aubin with 13 and 7 rebounds and Isaac Rivera with 9 points, 7 assists and 2 steals. On Jan. 20, they played Everglades Prep, winning 57-38. St. Aubin had a massive game, scoring 23 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and adding 3 assists for the ‘Canes. AJ Putetti had 13 points and Holmes scored 12.

Head coach Jarrod Mandozzi attributed the ’Canes’ recent success to his team’s willingness to sacrifice and give their all, playing into the team motto: “Whatever It Takes.” He called his team’s win streak against some high-caliber teams “a perfect storm” of many things, including solid work ethic, teamwork and experience competing against some of the best teams on the east coast over the holiday break.

“I'm so happy for the guys and proud of them,” said Mandozzi. “This group is really committed and it shows.”

Marathon played two games last week, losing both but showing some sparks of a late season run. On Jan. 17, they fell to Everglades Prep 57-32. Fisher Coleman-Sayer led the Fins with 8 points in

the loss, while Oscar Garcia, Jesus Gonzalez and Adrian Cruz each scored 6. According to head coach Kevin Freeman, the Fins played well in the first half, heading to the locker room only down 31-20. But with only 6 points in the third quarter, Everglades pulled away for the 25-point win.

On Jan. 20, Marathon and Key West played one another in Conch territory. The Conchs came out on top, beating the Fins 59-33. James Osborne scored 13 points and Kevon Mills added 10 plus 7 rebounds in the victory. Earlier in the week, Key West fell to Sagemont 89-43. Kameron Roberts had 11 points and 6 rebounds. James Osborne added 10 points and Watson Chery had 10 rebounds in the Jan.17 loss.

HUMOR

One of our beloved team members in the Keys Weekly & Overseas Media Group family was recently married. Maison Sellers (formerly Benitez) recently tied the knot with Damien Sellers, in Tampa on Jan. 20. The Sellerses are a longstanding Conch family, with many historical ties to Key West and the Florida Keys community. As for the rest of our Keys Weekly team who attended the wedding, the experience was eye-opening, as close to 100 Conchs made the trip north to celebrate Damien and Maison. So if you or a loved one hasn’t attended a Conch wedding, we are here to help. Here are our…

THINGS TO EXPECT AT A CONCH WEDDING

10. Everyone, from grandmothers to grade schoolers, knows 12 variations of the Electric Slide and can perform them effortlessly to random ’90s rap & country songs.

Two Florida Keys weather buoys that collect and report weather and marine data are scheduled to be deactivated Feb. 28, according to Chip Kasper, meteorologist-in-charge at the Florida Keys National Weather Service office in Key West.

The buoys at Pulaski Shoals Light in the Dry Tortugas and Molasses Reef off Key Largo are slated for closure.

“Weather and ocean data have been collected routinely at both sites since the mid1980s (Molasses Reef) and early 1990s (Dry Tortugas area),” Kasper reports.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which administers the weather buoys, is accepting public comments about the planned closure until Feb. 21.

In his email newsletter this week, Kasper shared a notice from Ajay Mehta, director of

the National Weather Service’s Office of Observations.

“The U.S. Coast Guardowned Pulaski Shoals Light structure is unsustainable due to the deteriorated condition of the platform,” Mehta reported.

“The National Data Buoy Center has partnered with the U.S. Coast Guard to seek repairs, but with no resolution. A 30day public comment period is available until Feb. 21, 2023.”

For alternate weather information, refer to the nearby NDBC station in the region, Sombrero Key off Marathon. All weather buoys are accessible at ndbc.noaa.gov.

For information or to comment, email William Burnett, director of the NDBC, at william.h.burnett@noaa. gov. National Service Change Notices are at weather.gov/ notification. — Contributed

9. Understand that every Conch in attendance can tie over 100 fishing knots, but will likely need assistance with their necktie.

8. Somehow everyone is Cuban or “part-Cuban,” but no one speaks a lick of Spanish.

7. Everyone with the last name Barrios will attend the wedding. After all, they are cousins with every Conch in the Keys.

6. Atocha coins are an accepted form of payment at the bar.

5. You never need to learn a Conch’s name at the wedding. If confused, simply ask to see their 24K gold name chain — typically worn around a neck or ankle.

4. Do not ask a dude named Donny Barrios to tase you. He will.

3. Top-shelf liquors are not listed on the bar menu. If desired, use one of the following codewords while speaking with the bartender — “Cuzzie,” “Bubba” and/or “Blessed.” (Note: Bonus points if you bring your own Yeti cup to the wedding).

2. Everyone, from grandmothers to grade schoolers, knows every word to ’90s rap songs — including 2 Live Crew.

1. You’ll meet, chat with, enjoy and get to know the best people on earth. And above all, congrats to Damien and Maison!

We’ve crossed the threshold into Aquarius season, the time of year when the sun’s light is infused with visions of our own uniqueness, impulses to explore and understand the peripheries of our culture, and thoughts of worlds beyond. It is the time of year when we lay the groundwork for all of the joys, sorrows, adventures, successes and failures of the year to come. Currently, all of the planets are moving direct since Mars and Mercury moved out of retrograde motion over the past two weeks, so we should all be feeling some propulsion forward, like the sluggishness has worn off and our tires are hitting the pavement. I hope you are participating in the forward momentum right now and moving in the direction of your purpose – it is a great time to feel supported. Here are your horoscopes for the week. RED BARN THEATRE BRINGS THE WILD WEST TO KEY WEST

Imagine Hopalong Cassidy trying to date Carrie, or Miss Kitty chasing Chuckie around the corral with a meat cleaver in an Addams Family version of “Gunsmoke,” and you may get close to the Red Barn’s next production.

“Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage”, written by Jane Martin, opens Jan. 31 and runs Tuesdays through Saturdays through Feb. 25.

It’s a mash-up of B-movie Westerns and C-movie horror flicks that will have you laughing even while you’re sitting in disbelief at what you’re seeing.

“I just love its audacity,” said director Joy Hawkins. “It’s unlike anything I’ve ever directed. It’s full of macabre people you love and hate at the same time. We can’t get through a rehearsal without laughing ’til our sides ache.”

Without giving away too much (because the surprises are everything), “Flaming Guns” tells the story of Big 8, a retired rodeo star who’s trying to save her home from foreclosure. Living with her is Rob Bob, a rising young rodeo star (think more Gomer Pyle than John Wayne). Into this household

comes SheDevil (her choice of name) who is pregnant by Big 8’s ne’er-dowell son, Lucifer Lee. But SheDevil is being hunted down by her very angry Ukrainian biker boyfriend, Black Dog, and when he shows up, things get interesting.

“Be aware,” Hawkins said, “that there is, indeed, a lot of violence and blood and sex all mixed in, but it’s done in a very farcical and satirical way. It’s definitely for adults. … I wouldn’t bring the kids. But it’s a very cleverly written send-up of those old Bmovie Westerns and horror flicks. This is all fun and laughs about how crazy – in a very funny way – human beings can be.”

The play stars a mix of Key West’s comedic actors, including George DiBraud, Susannah Wells, Mathias Maloff, Tim Dahms, Cassidy Timms, Iain Wilcox, and Jack McDonald.

Hawkins directs and Carmen Rodriguez designed the western duds.

Tickets are available at redbarntheatre.com or by calling 305-2969911.

This week’s run, Jan. 24-28, marks the final week for one of the classics of mid-20th century English theater, JB Priestley’s “An Inspector Calls,” at the Waterfront Playhouse in Key West.

Information and tickets are available at waterfrontplayhouse.org or 305-294-5015.

Taking place on a single night in 1912, the play focuses on the prosperous upper middle-class Birling family, visited by a man calling himself Inspector Goole who questions the family about the suicide of a young working-class woman in her mid-20s.

Dan Waller appears as Goole, while David Black, Barbara Mundy, Jillian Todd, Arthur Crocker, J. Michael Wright and Ma Cawley round out the cast.

“An Inspector Calls” is directed by Patrick New, who last directed “Sex with Strangers” at the Waterfront. Design is by Michael Boyer. Lighting design is by Chris Hodge, and Andrew Theede is serving as production stage manager. — Contributed

‘GIVE ’EM HELL, HARRY’ RETURNS TO TRUMAN LITTLE WHITE HOUSE

The stage production “Give ’Em Hell, Harry!” returns to Key West for shows on Sunday, Feb. 19 and Monday, Feb. 20. “Give ’Em Hell, Harry!” was written by Samuel Gallu and made its debut in 1975 at Washington, D.C.’s Ford’s Theatre.

The one-man show celebrates the persona and presidency of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd U.S. president. Performed in Key West for the first time in 2022, the event takes place on the grounds of the Harry S. Truman Little White House, where Truman spent 11 working vacations from 1945-53.

The actor portraying him is his grandson, Clifton Truman Daniel, a professional actor with more than a dozen stage and TV credits, who has starred in the production since 2017.

We sat down with him to learn more.

How does it feel to perform the role of your grandfather on the grounds where he once walked at the Truman Little White House? It’s great to be able to step into his shoes — to dress as him and do the show in the place where he spent 175 days during his presidency. There’s a deep appreciation of that and of connection to family, but also, performing it here was the most fun I’ve had doing the show since I began. It’s Key West; it’s outside on the grounds of the Little White House. People are in a good mood, the bar is open, planes are flying overhead, and chickens are walking back and forth in front of the stage.

Had you ever performed a one-manshow before “Give ’Em Hell, Harry!”? Any thoughts to share on what it’s like to carry a one-man-show? I had never done a one-man show before and it was unbelievably intimidating. I worried obsessively about his accent, his mannerisms. I was terrified — 83 pages of dialogue and it’s just you. And there’s nobody else on stage to prompt you.

Any fun or fascinating anecdotes about performing “Give ’Em Hell, Harry!” in Key West? The environment lends itself to spontaneity and surprises. When a rooster strutted in front of the stage last year, I greeted it. A few minutes later, a hen showed up and I told her, “He went that-a-way.” Then there’s a scene where my grandfather converses with the ghostly apparition of Franklin D. Roosevelt, portrayed by the emissions of a smoke machine. During a stage and equipment check ahead of the first show last year, the smoke machine worked great, and swirled around FDR’s chair exactly as intended. But that evening, it wouldn’t start, wouldn’t start, and when it finally did, instead of swirling mistily in ghostly fashion, the wind blew scattered wisps of his apparition all over the stage.

Any fun or fascinating facts about Harry S. Truman to share? Grandpa was an accomplished classical pianist. He loved to swim when he was in Key West, which he couldn’t do much of in Missouri, and the Truman Annex Beach was built so he could swim there. His middle initial “S,” rather than represent the first letter of one name, for the sake of diplomacy could either stand for Shipp, his paternal grandfather, whose name

was Anderson Shipp Truman, or for his mother’s father, whose name was Solomon Young.

Special memories of him? Grandpa couldn’t see without his glasses and always swam sidestroke to keep his glasses out of the water. My brother and I learned firsthand as young children that you should not cannonball grandpa when he was swimming. When I was only 4 or 5 years old, I got it in my head that I wanted a marching band uniform for Christmas. My father called grandpa, who somehow found and acquired, not a band uniform, but a child-sized Marine master sergeant dress uniform.

“Give ’Em Hell, Harry!” is part of the 2023 “Presidential Families Weekend and Forum,” which features a Saturday, Feb. 18 moderated discussion among a panel of presidential descendants on the topic of “Working Across the Aisle: American Bipartisanship,” to be held on the grounds of the Harry S. Truman Little White House, 111 Front St. Key West. Other Presidential Weekend offerings include guided tours of the Historic Little White House, selfguided botanical lawn tours, a family-friendly Presidents’ Day cookout, and for foundation members, ancillary cocktail parties with presidential descendants. More information is at www.trumanlittlewhitehouse.org/foundation/ events.

EVENT BENEFITS LUCI’S FUND TO HELP ANIMALS IN NEED

About 150 pooches and their people had a doggone good time on Jan. 22, when the ‘Wienerpalooza’ dachshund parade was staged in Key West’s historic downtown.

Participants in the tail-wagging procession, a fundraiser for Luci’s Fund that benefits animals in need, included long- and shorthaired dachshunds as well as some “wiener-dog wannabes” representing other breeds.

While jackets weren’t needed on the balmy day, canine costumes and accessories were common. Dachshunds were dressed as everything from hot dogs in buns

to pastel-tailed mermaids and a unicorn with a silver horn.

“Grand marshal” Chester, a dapper 12-year-old rescue dachshund, even sported a tux and a top hat. And a costumed goldendoodle puppy wore a sign declaring him a “dachshund in training.”

The walking route, deliberately kept brief to cater to the dachshunds’ short legs, began at Key West’s red-brick Custom House Museum, then along a downtown avenue to Duval Street as spectators snapped “pupparazzi” photos and applauded their favorite pooches.
