After finishing as the regional runner-up at the Regional Championships Jan. 2122, Key West High School’s competitive cheer squad has advanced straight to the state finals. The rules require a team to score above 60 to compete in the semifinal round at state. As Key West scored above 70 and was second in the region, they’ll go straight to the final round. “We have 2½ minutes to do our best on the mat, and the cheerleaders are ready to give it their all in the state finals, which take place Friday, Feb. 3 in Gainesville,” coach Tiffany Hughes said. “The routine is fast-paced with elite stunts and pyramids as well as a crowd-engaging cheer and energetic dance,” Hughes said. “The athletes have worked hard throughout the season and are ready to bring home a state championship.” CONTRIBUTED
