That ordinance was scheduled to be considered at the Sept. 20 city commission meeting, but Mayor Teri Johnston said that based on the discussion, concerns and ideas generated at the Sept. 8 workshop, the commission will likely vote to further postpone its consideration and perhaps amend it.
“We’re in the midst of the worst housing crisis ever,” Kaufman told the real-estate industry crowd at the start of the workshop. “Since this or dinance was first proposed, the city has received 567 applications for new business tax receipts — that’s a potential 567 more short-term, or monthly, vacation rentals. We all have to understand that we have to put some limit on this. Otherwise, how will we sustain our community? I know you all have customers from out of town who want a return on their huge investment in a Key West home, but we have to put our com munityOnefirst.”speaker echoed Kaufman’s community concerns.

The proposed rule that prompt ed opposition from the real estate industry — and the Sept. 8 workshop — states that in order to rent out a home for 1 to 6 months, an owner must have had a monthly rental license, also known as a city-issued business tax receipt, in place by May 3, 2022.

BLACK HISTORY MUSEUM WANTS
John Wilson Smith, president of the nonprofit Black Educators Memorial Project, accuses Key West officials of treating the black community unfairly at the Sept. 7 city commission meeting.

RACIAL RATTLESTENSIONCITYHALL
tension rattled city hall on Sept. 7 during discussion of a museum dedicated to Key West’s black educa tors and indigenous people.
When Commissioner Jimmy Weekley replied, “That’s not true,” Smith said, “Well, it sure wasn’t from you. You’ve been one of our greatest obstacles since this started.”
“The city of Key West and Monroe County owe the black people, owe the black community the opportunity to be here and to stay on this land,” Smith said. “The city commission has not been fair to us. Com missioner Kaufman is right. There’s going to be no healing and this town is gonna catch hockey sticks before this is over, because we’re not going to sit down and let this hap pen. This is just not fair.”
He reminded the commission and city manager that they had received a master plan for the museum from Smith’s Black Educators Memorial Project in 2020, but it was never discussed.
Smith told Lopez, “You have stated in many news articles that you support the Black Educators Memorial Project, and yet you have not uttered one word.”
— Commissioner Sam Kaufman
City Manager Patti McLauchlin said she had not been given the master plan by the prior city manager. “There’s been a stale mate between Mr. Smith and about 10 of my employees, trying to get the information we’ve been requesting about the museum. That’s the reason for my frustration here tonight.”Smith
The president of the proposed mu seum’s nonprofit group, John Wilson Smith, wants more space and support from the city; city officials want more information from him and his group — a business plan, financials and a description of artifacts and displaySmithmaterials.saidthe commissioners, with the exception of Sam Kaufman, are treating the black community unfairly and have shown “not a wink of approval to get this going since we began in 2010.” But officials said Smith has produced none of the informa tion the city has repeatedly requested; he could not name the board members of his nonprofit Wednesday evening and can’t ex pect the city to donate space for a museum without knowing how big it will be, or what it will display.
Commissioners initially considered changing the language of the proposed item to include an assurance that the museum space could be expanded to accommodate whatever its materials needed. But that of fer was rescinded after heated exchanges
Weekley told Smith, “That’s why nothing gets done. It’s your attitude.”
The commission ultimately voted 6-1 to designate space — about 220 square feet — inside the Frederick Douglass Community Center for a “Black Educators History Memo rial/Museum.”Butthespace isn’t enough, said Smith, president of the nonprofit Black Educators Memorial Project that’s proposing the mu seum. The proposed floor plan also includes about 250 linear feet of wall space for dis plays, and the ability to name six classrooms in the coming community center for black educators. The plan also gives the Black Educators Memorial Project naming rights for the large music hall in the new center, meaning the group could raise money when someone pays for the right to choose the name of the main music hall.
Kaufman has vocally supported the mu seum, and on Sept. 7 asked that the decision about designating the space be postponed so more information could be exchanged. He said he believes the city has missed some opportunities for better communication. But his two motions to postpone the vote on the designated space twice failed due to lack of a second.Kaufman was the lone dissenter in the vote that ultimately designated, “in concept,” the space at the Frederick Douglass Commu nity Center — the 220 square feet, 250 linear feet and naming options for classrooms and the music Kaufmanhall.told the commission he regrets that the city has no “substantial AfricanAmerican museum, and no permanent exhibit featuring African-Americans. It’s em barrassing. We have to get this right and we have to heal because this ongoing contro versy is not good for the community.”
“No one on that dais, with the exception of Commissioner (Sam) Kaufman, has given even a wink of approval of anything to go ahead with this,” Smith said.
Smith said he can’t get the artifacts and materials until he has an appropriate space designated. He said the museum has been promised a significant donation of artifacts pending acquisition of museum space.
To which Lopez replied, “I will not get into an argument with a fool — and don’t you dare try to draw me into it.”

Adding to DeSantis’ contributions are the tens of millions being raked in by the Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC. Since his run for governor in 2018, the PAC has gathered more than $184 million. Since November 2021, the PAC has collected more than $77 million.
“I promised to leave Florida to God better than we found it,” he said following his endorsement from the Everglades Trust. “We have made good on that promise, securing $3.3 billion in funding for Everglades restoration and protection of water resources.”

“You just keep telling them to do it. And now they walk in and they get it and it’s sitting on their desk when I’m ready to start. Kids who weren’t coming or were coming 15, 20 min utes late to class are showing up on time. And they’re writing. And reading out loud.
With a bit of research, she found a teach er’s edition of activities and an opportunity to hire Erin Gruwell to speak to her Key West classes. Using the book’s “jar in front of the classroom” method, Shoemaker and her stu dents raised half the money for Gruwell’s fee, and principal Amber Acevedo approved the expenditure for the other half.
“When students tell you that’s the favorite part of their school year — or two years later, they’re still talking about that time they got to video chat with Erin Gruwell, the teacher from the original Freedom Writers, or when you see them four or five years later, and they ask, “Are you still teaching that book?’ Yeah, as a teacher, you don’t stop doing something like that.”

She founded and runs the Southernmost Jeep Club and teaches paddleboard yoga every Sunday. But she stays busiest at Key West High School, where she has taught English for eight years, influencing and inspiring 10th graders.

Like many others, Shoemaker came to Key West on vacation from Charlotte, North Carolina, where she’d earned her paddleboard yoga teacher certification. She was “celebrat ing quitting” her job and realized she could teach here. Three weeks later, she was at a new teacher orientation for Key West High School. That was July 2014. Prior to this, she worked in a maximum-security juvenile detention facility as a corrections officer. Unable to find a teach ing job out of college in Pennsylvania due to a hiring freeze, Shoemaker moved forward on a friend’s lead about a job working with kids.
“‘Freedom Writers’ is a book about kids put ting down guns and fists and picking up a pen and writing their story,” she says. (Hilary Swank later starred in a movie about the California teacher, Erin Gruwell, who used writing to reach — and liberate — students at an innercity high school.)
She still keeps it old-school in her classes as well. Her students are required to write in a daily journal at the start of every class, sharing their innermost thoughts, despite knowing the journal would be read later. (That’s how Gru well’s Freedom Writers project initially started as well.)

Adult nighthawks don’t really walk much, but the chicks are precocial, and can walk within 24 hours of being born. While brood ing their eggs, females will actually adjust their position through out the day and keep their back toward the sun. When the chicks hatch, they will often find refuge in the shade to keep cool, but also to be less visible.
MARK HEDDEN

An adult common nighthawk seen recently in the Keys. MARK HEDDEN/Keys Weekly

“They’ve all got to be common nighthawks,” I said. “Migrants. All the local Antillean nighthawks bugged out a couple weeks ago.”
for them, and this one looked to be a common nighthawk, one of the two species that breed here in the Keys. She was trying to look vulnerable, so if we were predators, we’d move toward her. Then she would jump a short distance away again, hoping to draw us even further from the original site.
The unexpected nighthawk-related thing this season was the text I’d received from Chris Bergh a few days before, in which he told me he’d seen a nighthawk on the ground at a local park, and that there was a “big fuzzy chick” next to it. He gave some specific instructions about where the birds were, including “hiding in the shade of a wax myrtle.” He ended the text with, “If you’re into that sort of thing.”
Nighthawks don’t build nests. They lay their eggs in a scrape on the ground, often right out in the open. They count on their cryptic plumage to camouflage them, and if someone gets too close, they do the distraction display. The females do the brooding, but the males are often close by, keeping an eye on things, and if the dis traction display doesn’t work, they will do a thing called booming, where they fly incredibly close to you, and then change direction quickly, creating a little vortex of air that can be amazingly unset tling. (The first time it happened to me I was convinced, at first, there were bullets whizzing by.)
Pedaling
What Ellen and I did know, though, was that these birds needed as little stress in their life as possible, especially as they were in the middle of a pretty popular park. So we got some good looks, took a few pictures, then backed away slowly, wishing them both the best of luck.
I stopped by the park to look for the chick a couple days later. Ellen Westbrook was with me and we spent about half an hour wandering around, going, “What does a wax myrtle plant look like again?” and generally suffering in the heat. I tried to look up what a wax myrtle looked like on my phone, but the screen couldn’t compete with the fusillade of lumens the sun was throwing at us, so we bailed and continued on up the Keys.
It would seem like a dumb move for a bird to make so little ef fort to get away from us, but it was actually a bit of avian cunning, a classic example of a distraction display. Nighthawks are known
down Whitehead Street on the way home from the Green Parrot the other night I was pointing out all the nighthawks fly ing overhead in the last of the crepuscular light. By the time we passed the lighthouse and the Hemingway House there’d been about 30 or 40 of them, zipping around in that unique nighthawk way, meaning they’d be on an easy glide in one direc tion, then suddenly change direction and dart after something. Then they’d change direction and glide, then change direction again. No trajectory looked to be longer than six or eight yards before it was aban doned. It’s how nighthawks feed – flying in an erratic, seemingly random pattern with their disproportion ately large mouths open, gulping down bugs.
We’re not quitters, though, so we stopped again on the way south. We crunched slowly across the gravel, inspecting the root of every tree and bush we saw. Nothing. Until we walked too close to a picnic table and a brown blob leapt out from beneath, then landed about 10 feet away, staring at us with half-opened eyes.
My wife did a really good job of pretending she was Ifinterested.youspend enough time in the Keys, wander ing around, looking for birds, it’s the kind of thing you expect to see in the fall, when thousands of birds migrate through here, though it will still inspire you to natter on to your spouse about what a cool sight it is, no matter how many times you’ve seen it, or how many times she’s heard you natter.
Bergh is the South Florida program manager for the Nature Conservancy, which is a nice credential, but more to the point, Bergh grew up here, and still revels in the wonders of this place. And I don’t think I know anyone with a better, fuller, more holistic understanding of Keys ecosystems and how they work, as well as all the various ways they are imperiled, than him. And if he said he saw a nighthawk chick in September – so (freaking) late in the season – he no doubt did.
If it were anyone else I would be sure they were mistaken, that while they thought they saw a fuzzy nighthawk chick, it was more likely a large pile of lint that escaped from a nearby clothes dryer, or maybe a baseball that had lost its cover, or, at best, a plush toy dropped by a child. Because any nighthawk chick born in the Keys should have fledged weeks, or even months, ago.
NIGHTHAWKS IGNORING THE DEADLINES
... is a photogra pher, writer, bonFloridadirectoristhebemaythanWesthasbirdwatcher.semi-professionalandHelivedinKeyformore25yearsandnolongeremployableinrealworld.HealsoexecutiveoftheKeysAuduSociety.
Why the nighthawk was raising a chick this late in the season was hard to say. It might have been a second clutch. Or even a third one. In northern climes, birds tend to raise their chicks as soon as possible, and migrate once food begins to get scarce. But things get less clear the farther south you travel. Some species time their breeding and migration to the length of the day and the angle of the light. Some species seem to have hard-wired internal calendars. The mechanisms by which birds time their breeding and migration are still largely unknown.
KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 15, 202216
But we weren’t predators, we were birdwatchers, and we both froze, then looked in the shadow of the picnic table from whence she came. And there it was, a small fuzzball of a chick – the thing she was trying to distract us from – just sitting there. It was about a third the size of its mother, covered in gray down, but it stared at us with the same half-open eyes.
In the second quarter Sunday with Miami up, 10-0, but looking at fourth down and 7 yards to go at the Patriots’ 42-yard line, there was no punter in sight. Instead, quar terback Tua Tagovailoa took his usual place behind the center, and despite the downage, he threw a slanting pass to Jaylen Waddle who ran into the end zone for a 17-0 lead. The touchdown pass showed several things, but most important was that coach Mike McDaniel is not afraid to take chances on fourth down. It was also part of the indication that Tagovailoa is quite capable of being a standout quarterback. And that Miami has capable wide receivers, including Tyreek Hill. For the game, which Miami won, 20-7, Tagovailoa com pleted 23 of 33 pass attempts for 270 yards, the one touchdown, with no interceptions.FortheDolphins, it was a solid victory, but Miami has been making a habit of defeating New England the last several years, so this was more of the same. The defense performed well, too, even scoring a touchdown when Melvin Ingram picked up a loose fumble at the 6-yard line and ran the ball into the end

Reese Haggard is a leader on the court who quite literally ‘sets’ her teammates up for success. TRACY MCDONALD/ Keys Weekly
In last Thursday night’s game against Marathon, Reese Hag gard shouldered the respon sibility of manning the team’s new offensive structure on the court, something which impressed her coach and held the team together when they had a few minor adjustments to make early in the game. As a setter, Haggard does the heavy lifting to make her teammates look good. In the big win, she had an amazing 21 assists. Her precision serving has become a thing of beauty this season, and she racked up six aces in three sets of play. For her fantastic game play, on-court leadership and hustle, Reese Haggard is this week’s Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.

Key West coach Johnny Hughes was tipped off that the Saints might be playing with some post-graduate athletes. His suspicions were exacerbated when the game film the school sent to him showed the Saints playing McDougal Tech, a junior college located in Pom pano Beach. Tru Prep’s record was 1-0 coming into the game, with the

With a win in the books, the 1-2 Conchs will face yet another untested team on Sept. 16 in Dade Christian, a team with no games yet this season and just 19 players listed on its roster. The Conchs are at home again in The Backyard at 7 p.m.

The Fins answered back with a 55-yard touchdown run from freshman Shamar Wright and an extra two points from Hawkins. The lead was short-lived, as the Sharks added another seven just before halftime. After the break, Marathon controlled the clock, scoring toward the end of the abbreviated eight-minute third quarter with a Hawkins touchdown. The conditions became slop py by the fourth quarter, causing miscues and a fumble for the Sharks that put an end to their comeback hopes.
CORAL SHORES
Three high schools are celebrating big wins this week in a rare trifecta of success for Monroe County prep football. The wins themselves couldn’t be more diverse, though. Coral Shores put up huge numbers in a shutout win, Marathon had to grind for its win, fighting mother nature as well as their op ponent, and Key West was credited with a win despite being outscored by 20 points.

DOUG WeeklyFINGER/Keys
After the 40-20 “loss,” it was discov ered via social media that the prior al legations were, indeed, true, and every score made by Tru Prep was credited to an ineligible player.
The Hurricanes will take the show on the road this week as they play their lone away match this year at Miami Sunset. The ’Canes will face the 1-2 Knights on Friday, Sept. 16 at 3:30 p.m. in South Miami.
The Hurricanes improved their record to 2-1 on Sept. 9 with a de cisive 48-0 win against the Eagles of Palm Glades Prep Academy. Coach Ed Holly attributed the win to a team effort as well as that of the fans. “It was jam-packed. The community support is incred ible and it grows every week,” he said. “Our guys feed off of that energy. We love it!” And the fans loved the offensive onslaught the ’Canes put on, spreading out the scoring over five different players.Robert Dube set the tone on the Eagles’ first drive when he read a hitch route early, got the jump and took an interception to the house to put Coral Shores up 6-0. AJ Putetti added two scores for the ’Canes, one in the air and one on the ground. Chuck Jacob sen had a 20-yard reception in the end zone, Derek Smith had a 14-yard rushing TD, and Danty Diorio had a pair of rushing touch downs. The defense managed the shutout despite being without a few key players due to illness. The ’Canes adjusted to the new roles without issue and ensured the show was all Coral Shores. The big defensive line led by John Holly and Xavyer Arrington had mul tiple sacks and put pressure on the Eagles’ quarterback all night. The few plays that slipped through the line were ended quickly by Eddie Holly, who played defensive end this week, linebackers Ja cobsen and Elijah Palmisicano, and the rest of the ’Canes defense, who worked to keep their end zone clear all night.
start didn’t put a damper on the Dolphins’ offense as Marathon steamrolled into the end zone on the first drive of the game, moving the ball via team effort. Senior Thomas Eu bank earned the touchdown, followed by a two-point conversion by Malachi Hawkins to put the Dolphins on top, 8-0. Then came the first delay. The Sharks struck next, but were stopped in their two-point conversion attempt just in time for another delay. The Sharks used the break to their advantage and scored another six shortly after, but again failed to convert the extra point.

Anyone who watched the Key West game on Sept. 9 might have thought the Saints of Tru Prep Academy looked bigger, stronger and more developed than the TheyConchs.wouldhave been correct, for all the wrong reasons. Tru Prep played six ineligible players in the contest, giv ing Key West an unusual win after scoring 20 points to the Saints’ 40.
The Conchs did manage to score three touchdowns against the Saints despite the disadvantage, with Jakari Blackman scoring two and running back RJ Reynolds scoring one in what Hughes described as “an outstanding effort” in his first full game this season.
Hawkins had 122 yards on the ground in the shortened game and added three sacks defensively. Eubank and Wright had more than 50 yards apiece rushing, and Fab Louis Jeune tacked on three tackles.

Marathon had mixed results, play ing three games in four days. The Fins came away with a big win against Palm Glades Prep, besting the Eagles 3-0 before later taking a loss to Key West. The result the following night would be similar, with Marathon falling to Colonial Christian 3-0 and bringing its record to 2-4.

Niles and Garcia were getting an early feel for what it was like to face the top prospects from the Class of 2023. These included Marlin Takovich, an outfielder and right-handed pitcher with a 90-mphplus fastball whose dream is to play for University of Miami, and right fielder and left-handed pitcher Jack Haggard, who is known for his big bat and hustle and is looking forward to furthering his base ball career at the next level, regardless of the team.

West had a big road win against Marathon on Sept. 8, taking down the Dolphins in three sets as the Lady Conchs’ consistent serving and aggressiveness at the net proved too much for the Fins. The first W of the season had eluded the Conchs’ talented team until then, and subsequent losses on Sept. 9 came against powerhouse programs Jensen Beach, Huntsville (Alabama) and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville.

Marathon will have another busy week, facing David Posnack Jewish Day, Archimedean and Palmer Trinity all within a week.
The 1-6 Conchs will take the experience and lessons from playing such highcaliber teams and use it to their advan tage this week against Coral Shores and Martin County, a team they will face at their home tournament dubbed the Key West Conch Cup.

Jensen Beach is ranked first in its class and eighth overall in the state, and is sitting on an undefeated season, but the Conchs still managed to score 18 in their second set against the 5A Falcons. Huntsville High School is ranked 7th in the state of Alabama in the 7A division.
Coral Shores had a light week, making short work of Keys Gate in three sets on Sept. 7 to even out their record at 2-2. Coral Shores faces Key West this week, a team that beat them in the preseason, then will have another long break before facing Palmer Trinity School on Sept. 20.

With so many online ranking systems, stat trackers and video sources, one might think that a scout’s job is not as important as it once was. But as several scouts explained, they are all looking for that “diamond in the rough,” and each team has a different set of elements it is looking for in an athlete, many of which cannot be fully examined via the internet. One scout with the Mets association explained that stat trackers and ranking engines were much like shopping online. You cannot always fully appreci ate all the nuances a player has to offer unless you see him in person.
The scouts will move on to College of Central Florida next week in Ocala while the local players head into fall ball, travel teams and workouts to get ready for Feb. 20, the opening day for FHSAA regular season game play this year.
ore than a dozen professional and college scouts came out to Rex Weech Field in Key West last Saturday in pursuit of local baseball prospects. Scouts whose territories include Florida, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic started their grueling monthslong search for the next generation of talent right here in the Keys. They came from pro grams including the Mets, Dodgers, Mariners, Blue Jays and Athletics and all were busy jotting down notes on players as young as 13-year-old Jack Niles and 14-year-old Roman Garcia.

Recently the world, and Key West in particular, lost a blues icon, one Mr. Bill Blue. Many great articles and tributes have been written about the man, his music and his effect on those who knew him. King or Muddy Waters tune, the audience would be pleasantly sur prised that this type of music was being played in the Keys,” she said. Lady A and her husband, Ric Arra, continue to lay down oldschool blues between Islamorada and Key West every week, with no plans to stop any time soon. “Though we could probably do well in a more urban environment, we would not trade the Keys for anything. being alone? Perhaps there is a third way. A focus for you right now is to reconsider your own self-image. Literally, how do you think of yourself and what is the image of your ideal wellness? Let the answer to that question guide your planning.
Are you starting to question who your real friends are? Like, do these people really have your best interests at heart? Really consider who celebrates your uniqueness, and be a bit wary of those who feel a little too cozy castle-in-the-sky. A partner might be frustrating your balance at work, so see how you might turn the frustration they cause into your own constructive determi nation.
A conflict is arising between your inventive spirit and the energy you are putting into building your financial and emotional security. Give your creative projects a little extra at tention and trust that you will be properly resourced. Reconsider
Your financial situation is shin ing a light on the power of your labor. Are you industrious in a way that most benefits you? Give your own needs a little extra love because it looks like some folks are pressuring you to do things that run counter to your best interests. Rethink how you engage with your local community as you might be devoting yourself to causes that are more wishful thinking than actually impactful.
Oct.SCORPIO24-Nov.
Rethink how you are investing your energy into the cumulative energies of those around you because it is easy for you to get lost in the mix right now. Your focus should be on rebuilding your own resources because you can not be of service to oth ers with an empty storehouse. There might be some conflict with your family and your part ner. Give your partner a little boost of support.

Well Aries, it’s a good time to take stock in what you are needing in a partner because going it alone might actually be too good to be true. Don’t be swayed by the illusion of solitude. Your siblings or close compatriots are showing up in a big way, but they are putting a damper on your labors of love. Try to get your work done despite the distraction.

BACKWARD IS THE BEST WAY FORWARD
Reevaluate your roots and take the time to decide what home and family are for you. Great adventures can be good for the soul, but right now they may be distracting you from what is really important. There is a lot of energy behind addressing your mental well-being, but this could create some strife in how you are communicating with others. Choose your words with care.

It may feel like your workplace is advancing an all-out assault on your self-love. Damn the man! This is a time to rethink how you are getting your personal needs met. In what ways are you resourcing yourself, both finan cially and emotionally? It seems there is a dream partner out there who can help you rework your stability; just be careful not to get caught up in pipe dreams and pyramid schemes. It is an ideal time to reassess how you are managing your mental well-being as it correlates to your most visionary creative projects. How can your inventiveness in painting, music, word-smithing, parenting, teaching, etc. be a method for your own internal balance? Acknowledge your bril liance and get to work. Also, you may be torn between actively investing in people and simply enjoying their company. I suggest making the investment.
How are you making progress in your own education, whether it be through actual study or seeking new experiences? Now is a time to consider that path, because you may be dealing with deceptive ideas of success. There is energy in your creative output, so dig in, but be mindful of how this creative surge might be dampening your empathetic obligations to other people.
Reexamine your career, whether it is your choice of career or some major choices you have made within your role. Is the work you choose helping to place you in your ideal community? You have been working hard and it seems to be paying off, but is your labor conflicting with your love of learn ing? Striking a balance might seem impossible right now. Put your needs first.

his week’s Key West cover celebrates man’s (and woman’s) best friend — the four-legged family members that enrich our lives during their short stint on this planet. Moreover, we recognize our Florida Keys SPCA and all they do, not just for our doggies, but for dozens of furry and slithery critters in need. Here at the Keys Weekly, we got into the doggy spirit as we put that piece together (see page 28), and along the way, began listening to artists and songs with “dog” themes. So like most Top 10 ideas we create, this one originated from an internal debate — what are the best “dog” inspired songs? Here is a “ruff” list of our favorites…
5. “I Love My Dog” — Sub lime: The name of the song says it all. And when you were one of the coolest, ska-badass bands to ever live, you can make a song professing your love for a dog. And only get cooler for doing so.
2. “Maggie’s Song” — Chris Stapleton: Right when we thought Chris Stapleton, the king of outlaw country, couldn’t get any cooler, he dropped “Maggie’s Song” on us in 2020. If you didn’t cry the first time you heard it, we don’t need to be friends.

According to the Florida Mu seum of Natural History’s Inter national Shark Attack File (ISAF), there were a total of 112 combined provoked and unprovoked shark bites in 2021; 39 ere provoked bites, a category that includes bites on spearfishers, among several other scenarios. The United States led the world in the number of unprovoked bites that year with 47 confirmed incidents, and Florida topped the list of states reporting bites with 28; Hawaii was a distant second with six.
“Especially at the bottom, it re ally wasn’t that bad,” he said. “This thing got me nowhere near my fish. If it was the same side or whatever,

Many shark experts agree that bites on humans are cases of mistaken identity. The scenario is likely exacerbated by cloudy water with reduced visibility – condi tions frequently found along the reef line in the Keys in the late summer months. But Winegard ner estimated the visibility on the seafloor where the bite occurred to be roughly 30 feet, and he was surprised the shark didn’t target the large grouper he was carrying on the other side of his body.
Marathon scuba instructor Zack Winegardner was diving recreationally with friends in about 70 feet of water when he headed back to the boat’s anchor line with a speared black grouper. Though the group had seen a shark swim through the area earlier in the dive, it had disappeared since their initial encounter.“Something came from behind and got me,” Winegardner told Keys Weekly, adding that no one from his dive crew saw the bite coming and that the entire ordeal was over in seconds. “I had no idea. I barely knew when it hit me. I looked back and it was still holding my arm, and then it just let go and bolted.”
1. “Who Am I (What’s My Name?)” — Snoop Dogg: Bow Wow Wow Yippie Yo Yippie Yay. Need we say more?
Though initial reports unof ficially attributed the bite to a reef shark, Winegardner had a different opinion.“Ihaven’t argued the call,” he said. “The shark that passed us was a reef shark, but when I made eye contact with the shark that bit me, I’m positive it was a bull. But at that point it’s he said, she said, I guess.”
Florida Keys recorded its fourth shark bite in six months when a diver was bitten while spearfishing on Sept. 6.

9. “Seamus” — Pink Floyd: If you thought Pink Floyd was all laser shows and mystical classic rock, then you need to check out this bluesy classic about a dog finding his way to his new owner’s house. It’s short, simple and sweet.
8. “Man Of the Hour” — Norah Jones: The “man” who holds Norah’s heart is, of course, her dog. Imagine an entire ode being created and sung on your behalf by the amazing Norah Jones. That’s one lucky dog.
Winegardner’s friends rushed him to Marathon’s Captain Hook’s marina, where he was eventu ally transported to the Marathon airport and flown via Trauma Star to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami. There he underwent surgery to close the wounds and repair tendons in his forearm.
10. “Hound Dog” — Elvis Pres ley: Yes, the recent Elvis movie invigorated a new generation of fans, but “Hound Dog” is as American as apple pie and baseball. No legitimate list of dog songs can be compiled without this one.
7. “Gonna Buy Me A Dog” — The Monkees: Perhaps the most underrated band in his tory and of course, they made a song about buying a dog. Who knew Monkees love dogs?
4. “Scooby Snacks” — Fun Lovin’ Criminals: If you were a ‘90s kid, you get it. For every one else, do yourself a favor and download it now. It’s timeless and stands up today. Here’s to all of the Scooby snackers out there.

6. “Black Dog” — Led Zeppe lin: OK, this one isn’t as much about dogs, in fact, we don’t think Robert was referring to a dog at all, but it’s one kick-ass, timeless song with “dog” in the title, so it made our list.

During a nearly 11-month hospitalization, he fought a courageous battle against all odds.Cliff was larger than life, a force of nature, and will always be re membered as a legend. Cliff passed peacefully at home in Key West, surrounded by his family and dear friends on his 71st birthday. An inti mate gathering of close family and friends will spread his ashes among the currents off Islamorada, at the same coordinates where Cliff had spread the ashes of his best friend, Eddie Collins, in 2002.

In the 30 years he lived in Miami, Cliff enjoyed boating, fishing and snorkeling throughout the Flor ida Keys. He taught Mary and the kids to appreciate what he loved about the wonders of the ocean. It was always his dream to live on the water, and he ultimately made that dream come true several times. His happy place was being on the boat, the water “like glass,” listening to Tom Petty and Talking Heads with his family.Afterdecades of practicing law, enduring debilitating physical pain, and many subsequent surgeries, Cliff retired at an early age. Despite being in chronic pain, he would not miss out on life with his family, which so clearly brought him the joy and reason to persevere.

Iguanas are only one of the invasive species to arrive on the island chain and find the living to be good. One of the best things about being an invasive species is that the natives do not know what to do with you – plant or animal, they just slide in, start growing and take over. In the Florida Keys, the herbivorous iguanas (with a taste for bird eggs) with no natural predators are as common as cockroaches. In Key West, they have been seen feeding on scraps of food discarded from restaurant tables, some times lettuce, on occasion French fries, like common chickens.
In addition to Iguana iguana, there are brown anoles. When we moved on to the property eight or nine years ago, many more brown anoles lived here.
KEY WEST WEEKLY / SEPTEMBER 15, 202234
Green iguanas are scientifically known by one of the all-time original Latin names, Iguana iguana. While Iguana iguana has all but taken over South Florida and the Keys, it is indigenous to Central and South America. How did they wind up in South Florida? It started with the exotic pet trade. The little green fellows escaped some of the enclo sures attempting to hold them, and others were set free by thoughtless owners. In 1964, an exotic pet store owner from Miami released 300 green iguanas on purpose. Something became of that event because, as they keep reiterating in the “Jurassic Park” movie franchise, “Life finds a way.”
BROWN ANOLES AND CURLY TAILED LIZARDS FIND LIFE IN THE KEYS
These days, there are not so many brown anoles in the yard – not since the curly-tailed lizards moved in.
Six or seven years ago, they had yet to set their scaly little fingers on the property, and brown anoles skittered away with every
step it took to walk out to the street and check the mailbox. Now, the curly tails run when they see me approaching. I have strong feelings about curly-tailed lizards, and ones I do not share with Iguana iguana (much to my wife’s chagrin). Curlytailed lizards are bigger and faster than their anole counterparts and not only out-compete them for resources but eat them – especially when the summer babies hatch.
Because brown anoles arrived so long ago, in the late 19th century, they are not always lumped into the invasive category. They are. Brown anoles competed for re sources and habitat with the native Carolina anole. To compete with the invaders, the green anoles, sometimes called the Ameri can chameleon, moved higher up into trees.
EXOTIC INVASIONS
Green iguanas are scientifically known by one of the all-time original Latin names, Iguana iguana. CONTRIBUTED
Back on land, curly-tailed lizards may begin encountering a new threat. No longer simply hunters, they may start to be the hunted, too. An African species called a redheaded agama, a bigger, stronger and faster lizard, is making inroads on the island chain. It will be interesting to see if, a decade or two down the road, the agamas have affected curly-tailed lizard populations, if brown anoles have been relegated to niche popula tions, and if the native Carolina anoles ever come down from the safety of their trees.
Back at Sioux Street, a plethora of inva sive species have staked out the yard. While cats rid the local neighborhoods of a spat tering of iguanas, most dead ones show up splattered in green and red on the road.
By the time I was 15 or 16, I had stopped keeping them in cages and instead hunted them in the wild, where I took pictures to re member them. Suffice it to say, I was familiar with green iguanas long before I moved to Plantation Key.

up fascinated by all things that slithered, crept and crawled. As a boy, I kept cages stacked atop the two dressers in my bedroom where lizards and snakes lived and died.
Curly-tailed lizards are also a cocky species and the primary reason the defiant lizards are not infrequently seen flattened by automobile tires on the road. They can also be compared to the invasive lionfish when wreaking havoc on an ecosystem. Lionfish are voracious feeders with no natural preda tors in their unnatural environment, which is one of the reasons it has been so easy for them to dominate the reef.

Moving to the Florida Keys in 2001 was similar to moving back into my boyhood bedroom – in the sense that I was once again surrounded by slithering and crawling things. There were fewer green iguanas on the islands 20 years ago – a great many, but not like they are now. They are everywhere in South Florida, the Keys and beyond, and there is nothing extraordinary about the report of green iguanas menacing (munch ing) their way across the yard. The common green iguana is a prevalent intruder at the Sioux Street office. They also leave behind poop that sometimes rains down from a tree limb overhead like a filthy, brief, torrential downpour.

Stanley Papio, known as Barefoot Stanley for his preferred welding foot wear, was a welder in the army during WW II. He moved to Florida in 1947, eventually buying property in Key Largo and setting up his own welding shop. Stanley’s lot in time became a yard piled high with metal parts, old cars, washing machines, and other metal discards. Papio was harassed and fined for his “junkyard” to the point he was jailed six times for zoning violations. In the early 70’s Stanley began to weld sculptures from the piles of material lying around his property. With his junkyard art he was able to open “Stanley’s Art Museum”, charging 25 cents admission. His work was playful, satirical, and filled with social commentary often directed towards his community adversaries. Papio began to gain notice and recognition from tourists and art experts alike. all recognizing his creativity, imagination, and uncanny welding skills. Eventually his outsider art placed him as one of Florida’s pioneering folk artists. Papio’s art was not fully appreciated during his lifetime, however he exhibited his work in Canada and his work toured Europe as part of the U.S. State Department’s America Now exhibition. He is listed in the Directory of American Folk Art and The World Encyclopedia of Naive Art.
