ove is in the air. It’s that wonderful time of year when the stress of planning for the perfect Valentine’s gift begins. But there are a couple rules to keep in mind before you start your search. First of all, don’t show up with flowers from the gas station; too obvious. Next, check out the Tinder date on Monroe County Sheriff’s Office website first. Finally, if all else fails, show up with pizza and a bottle of wine; if they can’t appreciate that, they aren’t the one. To prevent locals from waiting until the last moment to find something special for their sweetie, the Weekly asked…

“What’s the best Valentine’s gift? you’ve ever received”

“The best Valentine’s Day gift I’ve received was my first granddaughter, who was born on that very day,” said Belinda Ahwach, of Wendy’s in Key Largo.

Joel Chairez, of Doc’s Diner, said “A bronze-colored Michael Kors watch.”

Michelle Montgomery, of Keys Divers, said “My husband proposed to me on Valentine’s Day four years ago. These past four years have been the best adventure with him at my side.”

“Gorgeous flowers with an enormous heart balloon attached to it. And when I got home from work, I arrived to a spotless house,” said Vicky Sanchez, also of Doc’s Diner.

Wendy Nunez, of Señor Frijoles, said, “An amazing candlelit dinner under the moonlight, with a bottle of red wine and too much love to spend.”

OPINION

UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 10, 2017

OPINION Editor’s note: Islamorada Councilman Mike Forster recently addressed the Florida Senate Appropriations Committee about the future of Florida Bay and the Everglades National Park. Here is a lightly edited transcript of his remarks:

I

have traveled here today from the southernmost point of our great state, because of the great importance of this discussion, and how it affects Islamorada and Monroe County, and its direct impact on our economy. The Florida Keys tourism industry creates approximately 33,000 jobs and tourismrelated sales exceed $2.7 billion. Monroe County generates nearly $200 million in sales tax revenue annually for the state, which is the highest sales tax revenue per capita in Florida. The Florida Keys is a oneof-a-kind ecosystem that is the lifeblood of the Keys commercial and recreational fisheries-based economy, which generates more than $4.5 billion in positive economic activity, and attracts more than 4 million visitors per year. Besides being an elected official, I am an owner/operator of two restaurants and a seafood market. I was drawn to the Florida Keys because I am also an avid recreational fisherman. My home away from home is the Everglades National Park and Florida Bay. You will hear from the scientists of the loss of thousands of acres of what once was beauti-

ful pristine sea grass that is now barren of life, and the everincreasing algae blooms that are now within 2 nautical miles of my house. I’m not here to point fingers or put blame on any particular agency, business, or political affiliation. I’m here to tell you that my constituents are just wanting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. My constituents and I totally support CERP and would never ask you to stop any of the progress that was started 17 years ago, but as our degradation gets worse with the years, we ask that you truly consider to add storage south of Lake Okeechobee concurrently with CERP. Unlike the harmful discharges to the estuaries east and west of the lake due to excessive water, we suffer the opposite: we do not get enough water, which creates our sea grass die-offs and algae blooms. Monroe County, with 72,000 taxpayers, spent close to $1 billion to remove all of our septic tanks and sewered our whole chain of islands. We are all now working on restoring our nearshore waters, storm water runoff, and have begun canal restoration to maintain the quality of water needed for our sustainability for generations to come. In conjunction with our taxpayers’ commitment to our precious and fragile ecosystem, we hope you also see the value and the need to commit state funding and move forward with all the tools and technology that you have the opportunity to use, in restoring and maintaining one of Florida’s most valuable assets. This past year I was involved with showing the devastation of the algae blooms and dead areas of sea grass to Senator Anitere Flores, Representative

Holly Raschein and Congressman Carlos Curbelo. Congressman Curbelo knows the importance of the restoration of Florida Bay and the Everglades National Park on a federal Level, and has committed to fighting for funding to help us in Washington. Too much of the past year has pitted too many of us against each other with differing opinions on a cure. All my constituents want is water, especially during the dry months, and the only way we see that happening is storage south of the lake. This problem started years ago and will take years to fix. I stand before you asking that you help preserve the national treasure that the Everglades National Park once was. By appropriating funds you will help future generations enjoy what I once knew and hopefully will see again in my lifetime. Thank you for your time and service to our great state, and thank you for your consideration!

Mo’ honey no problems Local beekeeper takes hobby, makes honey

An inside look at one of Pirate Hat Apiary’s hives.

GABRIEL SANCHEZ

J

gabriel@keysweekly.com

eff Wingate loves bees. Apis Mellifica, indigenous to Europe, to be specific. Wingate is an apiarist, or in simple terms, a beekeeper. Two years ago, Wingate started keeping bees after helping Florida Keys Electric Cooperative with the removal of beehives that kept workers from safely maintaining electric poles. Faced with the possibility of having to kill the bees, Wingate decided to aid in their safe relocation. Since then, he’s conducted more than 30 removals, which his company, Pirate Hat Apiary, happily offers. Removing bees can be tricky, says Wingate. Keeping them is slightly easier. Wingate is a proponent of communal bee farming. He believes that if neighborhoods and regions banded together, harvesting bee populations would be more effective. Wingate not only maintains homemade hives in his backyard, he also has several others in his neighborhood. Sandra Wofford, who lives just across the street, has welcomed the bees into her garden. “They are great; my flowers have flourished since I’ve had the bees. They really like my hydrangea; since I’ve had the bees, they have bloomed profusely,” said Wofford. “I’m sort of building a sanctuary here for them. Plus, it’s fun to watch them too.” Having hives in the area has allowed Pirate Hat Apiary to grow, says Wingate. “If you’re a true beekeeper, you’re looking to maximize your profit with the time you spend on it. You can be a beekeeper or a bee-haver,” said Wingate. But therein lies a problem with modern beekeeping. Wingate said many American apiarists are using the

same honey bees to aid in the growth of various crops like almond, apples, and pears. The problem is the bees have to be transported across the country to do so. “The same hives travel roughly 50,000 to 60,000 miles in a year. That can really stress the hive,” said Wingate. “I personally believe that the big loss that we are seeing in hiving is caused by what the hives are being put through. We’re asking too much of the bees.” Wingate looks at how apiarists in Europe have used their bees. “Agriculture in Europe has always been much different in terms of farming practices; for example, Europeans don’t spray as many pesticides. The European Union has more control over what can be sprayed and what can be applied.” In recent years, outspoken environmentalists have voiced concerns regarding bee populations dying off and the implications of that. “Some environmentalist are putting forth this crisis idea of beepocloypse,” said Wingate, “while others are saying that with slight modifications to farming practices, the rebound would be instantaneous. “Honey bees (Apis Mellifica) aren’t necessarily dying off; the bees we hear are dying off are indigenous to Hawaii,” said Wingate. “They are endangered because of competition for specific habitat resources by native wasps from southeast Asia, which were accidentally brought over and are vastly more prolific.” While there is disagreement over the factors causing bee deaths, one thing is for sure, it’s time to make it our bees-ness. outh Florida band The Catch takes from the golden era of music and makes it cool to be classic. Now in its sixth year, the band has truly mastered its craft. Covering songs from classic rock to the blues, the four musicians come from four very different walks of life. Take Chris Landin, lead singer and rhythm guitarist. Landin began playing guitar at age 12, and would form a band while serving six years in the Navy. The ship band was aptly named the Crow’s Nest. He later got into the glam band scene. “I had the hair and wore the eyeliner,” laughed Landin. “My father turned me on to blues after that, so I got away from the glam scene. Besides, I’m too fat to fit into Spandex any more.” Bass guitarist Joe Nowland has been playing the longest. In 1961, Nowland was listening to early rock and roll, when he finally heard Mickey and Sylvia’s “Love is Strange.” “Once I heard the guitar riff, I knew I had to play something,” said Nowland. While attending high school in

Alexandria, Virginia, Nowland had a band that was so talented that it was chosen to play with Neil Diamond. On the trip, Nowland also had the chance to meet Janis Joplin and the Jeff Beck group. Lead guitarist Max Torchut’s musical roots go back to his native France. Growing up, Torchut’s father was a stage manager for Club Med, and started putting young Max on stages as early as 4. At age 13, Torchut began shredding on six strings. “I like to say that guitar is my religion and my two gods are Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn,” said Torchut. “I grew up idolizing classic blues guys like Albert King and Albert Collins, but lately I’ve branched out into playing more funk.”

Dave Westberry started drumming in the fourth grade, and continued through his school years, but eventually stopped playing for 30 years. After a little nagging from friends to join their jam session, he once again picked up the sticks. Westberry takes inspiration from legends like Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, and Buddy Rich. Each member of The Catch is integral to the band’s sound. But their friendship is what makes the music special, said Nowland. The Catch has played at a few locations in the Keys and is looking to expand into new venues. The band has gigged at Gilberts, currently plays at Caribbean Club, and starting Friday, Feb. 17, will be the resident band at Bayside Grill.

eñor Frijoles is known by locals for its cotton candy machine, lively staff and life-sized Mexican mannequin named “Paco.” However, its specialty drink, the Señor Chata, is a scrumptious break from the ordinary. The Senor Chata is made from Rum Chata, Kahlua, house-infused vanilla tequila, with a cinnamon sugar rim. It’s strong, sweet, creamy and packs a punch. “It’s one of the more popular drinks,” said bartender Yulexy Portal. Portal has been tending bar for a year and a half after being suddenly promoted into the position. But that’s ok. Portal is a thrill seeker and has never shied away from trying something new. No regrets, that’s her motto. “You can’t let things you are afraid of keep you from doing what you like; that’s no way to live,” said Portal. “Same thing goes for drinks.” Portal is a dedicated activist. She sells her baked goods to raise money for causes she believes in like the ASPCA, ACLU, and the Trevor Project, which fosters a positive community for youth who identify as LGBTQ. She is mother to five dogs, one hamster, and 16 cats. The only thing that rivals her critter count is her tattoo total. She sports 12. ALTERNATIVE LOVE

Look for the Mermaid at MM 82 Bayside!

DIFFERENT WAYS TO MARK VALENTINE’S DAY

Every year on February 14, Valentine’s Day is celebrated between loved ones and friends. Outside the United States, Valentine’s Day is observed in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. The first valentine was written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of London. The poem read:

New Breakfast Menu 7 am – 10:45 am 7 Days a Week Lunch & Dinner 11 am – 10 pm CASUAL ATMOSPHERE - Fresh Seafood World Famous Fishing Guides • Private Parties on our Beach FREE WI-FI PROPERTY WIDE! • Happy Hour Specials 4 to 6 Enjoy the Sunset with “Live Entertainment Nightly” at 6 pm weather permitting

I am already sick of love My very gentle Valentine… Although a bit somber compared to the joyous and love-filled cards of today, the Duke appears to have been quite the romantic, writing more than 60 love poems to his wife over his 25year imprisonment. Today, Valentine’s Day is marked by the exchange of cards and gifts. The National Retail Federation predicts consumers will spend $18.2 billion in celebration of this holiday and the Greeting Card Association estimates more than 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year. Although the gifts of cards, candy, flowers, jewelry and dinner are great ways to celebrate this holiday, below are a few suggestions for showing your love in a different way. Donate In lieu of a traditional gift, make a donation to a worthy cause on behalf of your significant other. There are hundreds of nonprofit organizations in the Keys doing amazing work and they are always in need of more funds to help those in need. Volunteer Those same organizations also need volunteers to help achieve their mission. Spending a few hours with your love doing good is sure to provide lots of good vibes and natural highs. Also, the best gift is spending quality time together.

hat began as a home brewing hobby has flourished into a business with a countywide following about to celebrate its second anniversary. In that short time, owner Craig McBay’s Florida Keys Brewing Co. has made the leap from a tasting room to distributing a variety of its craft beers to dozens of places and, with a larger brewing system finally online, mass production for Monroe County. “We went from a barrel and a half system, making six kegs a batch, to our twenty barrel system, making eighty kegs a batch,” said Craig McBay. “It’s been an adjustment to scale up our recipes.” The first brew to undergo the scale up was the always popular Hogfish Amber Ale. “When I tried a sample after I brewed the first batch, I don’t think I’ve ever been more scared to drink a beer,” laughed McBay. McBay was the first to learn the ins and outs of the larger system. He then instructed his other brewers on how to use their new toy. Scaling up the ingredients to a larger production takes a bit of fine tuning. McBay said it usually takes about three batches before the taste is where it needs to be. events where we send out six kegs, our previous yield from a day of brewing.” Event-goers have probably spotted the familiar mermaid pour spout around the Keys. Even so, with distribution and the company expanding, the staff has mostly remained the same, with few additions. Florida Keys Brewing Co. distributes to more than 70 locations throughout the Keys. As time has passed, the demand has grown. Sid Vandiver, manager of Sharkey’s Pub in Key Largo, said the difference between Florida Keys Brewing Co. and other local brewing operations is the passion put into the beer. “You can tell right away that they love beer,” said Vandiver. Sharkey’s started off ordering six smaller kegs at a time, but due to demand, has grown its order to a couple half barrels a week of various brews. The local response has been promising, but even visitors are falling in love with the brews. “Tourists ask for it constantly;

I sell it daily. When they ask for beer that’s brewed here, I tell them it’s brewed twenty miles down the road and they want to try it,” said Vandiver. “We’re proud to have it. I don’t think I’ve ever given somebody a taster of it who didn’t end up ordering it.” Compared with a few other breweries in the Keys, Vandiver said, he hasn’t seen growing pains in the expansion at Florida Keys Brewing. He feels confident that’s because of good planning. In the beginning of February, Florida Keys Brewing Co. began canning its beers, and started planning specialty bottle releases. For the anniversary party, the brewery is releasing “Smelly Butt IPA,” a pineapple aged IPA. The name is derived from smelling the butt of a pineapple to gauge ripeness. Visit the Florida Keys Brewing Co. for the anniversary party, and you may or may not leave with a smelly butt.

The brunch will be Sunday, Feb. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lobster Crawl Bar and Grill, MM70 bayside, Long Key. Tickets include endless champagne, Bloody Mary bar, cinnamon roll French toast, hogfish Oscar, smoked salmon, and other delicious breakfast plates. Tickets, at $65 for adults and $25 for children, are available via keysunitedway.org. Guests will dine while enjoying the sounds of the John Baxter jazz trio. “It’s a fun thing to be part of. We

Gift basket raffles will include chocolates, accommodations, massage, and yoga certificates, all donated by local businesses. “The Valentine’s Brunch is a great opportunity for UWFK community supporters throughout the Keys to meet and get to know one another,” said Maria Jones, local United Way board chair. “Last year, aside from the amazing brunch buffet provided by Mangrove Mike’s and the bottomless mimosa and Bloody Mary bar, the jazz musicians were fantastic and the view of the water at the Lobster Crawl is next to none.” All proceeds from the brunch will benefit the education, food, and safety net programs directed by United Way of the Florida Keys.

Guests will be able to bid on live and silent auctions, featuring more than $50,000 in trips, art, shopping sprees, boating items, and more. A one-carat diamond valued at $7,500, donated by Blue Marlin Jewelry, will be buried among 199 cubic zirconia stones. Only 200 chances will be available to pick the real diamond. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Blue Marlin Jewelry in Islamorada, on Habitat’s website, or during the cocktail party until sold out. UPPER KEYS WEEKLY / FEBRUARY 10, 2017

Money for coding

The Upper Keys Weekly is proud to partner with Coral Shores High School faculty and students in choosing “The Student of the Week.” Recipients are chosen on a myriad of qualifications ranging from academic standing, athletics, outstanding achievements, community involvement, individuality and moral fortitude. We thank our future leaders and CSHS for allowing us to share in a weekly dose of “Cane Pride.” What organizations and activities are you involved with at CSHS and why are they important to you? I am involved in Key Club, Environmental Club, and Interact Club. I also have played soccer last season and I am beginning lacrosse this season.

nence and riches. The presentation is at 6:30 p.m. at Island Community Church, MM 83. Call 305-393-0940.

What class do you think has best prepared you for life after high school and why? The class that has prepared me most for life after high school is Mrs. O’Connor’s English 2 Honors class. She has taught me to think outside the box and to go into more detail with my school work like essays and free writes.

Combination concert set for Jewish center

Instagram or Snapchat? What’s your favorite filter? Instagram. I don’t have a preference for filter.

As part of its ongoing Community and Cultural Education series, the Keys Jewish Community Center (KJCC) is hosting a concert on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. The “String + Attitude” concert features Dave Feder and Sam Weis and both performers will share great patter and stories. Contact Linda at 305-396-7000 or linda@lindakaplan. com to reserve a spot, or bring @25 to the door. The KJCC is located at MM 93.1, Oceanside.

What are the biggest challenges facing the Keys? What would you do to meet these challenges? One of the challenges facing the Keys is that the homeless or low-income people don’t have enough food throughout the week. To help these people I am going to help promote a new organization my friend started that gives community service to students who donate some of their fish that they catch to people in the Keys.

The Keys chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association has scheduled its 32nd annual event for Thursday, Feb. 23. Sponsored by Caribee, the party starts at 6 p.m. at Elks Lodge, MM 92.6 and features a huge live and silent auction with artwork, sculpture, trips, jewelry, Yamaha engines and more.

What are your plans after high school? My plans after high school are to go to college and become either a physical therapist or an orthopedic surgeon. I have yet to decide which profession but right now I am leaning toward a PT.

The Mariners Hospital Family Health & Wellness Fair takes place on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon, on the hospital campus. Participants can take advantage of free health screenings, including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body composition, osteoporosis, and more. Professionals from Mariners Hospital and other health-related organizations will be on hand to answer questions, and guests can tour the hyperbaric chamber. Bring the kids: there will be face painting, an inflatable obstacle course and treats. For more information, call 305-434-3000.

BILLY BUTLER

Who has been your biggest inspiration at CSHS and why? Abran Mendoza has been my biggest inspiration because he shows so much spirit during all school events and he is involved in many sports and extracurricular activities. He also shows leadership in student council which teaches me how to go all out for everything I try for.

Guest speakers included Islamorada Councilwoman Cheryl Meads and Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales. More than 100 items were auctioned to help raise money. —Weekly Staff report
