HISTORY OF KEYSTONE

Keystone Wood Specialties founder Sam Stoltzfus got into woodworking as a young boy. Having grown up the son of an Amish farmer and carpenter, he liked tinkering with wood and mimicking toys that his great-uncle Levi made. In 1972, at the age of 21, he founded his then one-man shop in Ronks, PA. Sam would make the cabinets, getting his doors from a supplier, and his father, along with his brothers and a friend, would install the kitchens. Sam shared numerous stories of the good times he had with his grandfather, also a farmer and carpenter, while making deliveries to customers.

From the beginning, Keystone Wood Specialties has been committed to making the highest-quality products. In 1977, Sam purchased machinery to begin making his own doors. Shortly thereafter, he began making doors for a few local cabinetmakers. From there, he saw an opportunity to grow into manufacturing cabinet components and stopped making cabinets altogether. In an interview, Sam mentioned, “That was a big switch, because it was like starting all over again. It was tough going for a couple years, to bring everything to the quality level we wanted.” And they did—Keystone’s quality continues to rank among the highest in the industry.

In 1984, Sam, along with about a dozen employees, moved into the current building on Old Philadelphia Pike. Keystone continued to grow its product line and was among the first to offer dovetailed drawers and to cater to the refacing industry.

Sam served as President and CEO of Keystone Wood Specialties, leading several additions and improvements to the building and workforce, until his passing in 2020. As the current President of Keystone Wood Specialties, Sam’s son, Nick Stoltzfus, is preserving the time-honored craftsmanship and work ethic established by his father, while incorporating new technologies and products that lay the groundwork for Keystone’s growth and success in the generation ahead.

DOOR & DRAWER FRONT CONSTRUCTION TYPES

There are three basic types of construction for Keystone’s five-piece doors and drawer fronts. Any cope and stick or haunched door can also be made as a mitred door upon request.

COPE AND STICK CONSTRUCTION

The most traditional construction type. Choose from available framing beads listed on page 43.

HAUNCHED CONSTRUCTION

This construction type is used when the framing bead cannot be made using cope and stick construction.

MITRED CONSTRUCTION

This is the most versatile construction type. The entire face of the rail/stile can be custom drawn and we will make it.

MINIMUM SIZES FOR DOORS & DRAWER FRONTS

Minimum door and drawer front sizes vary depending on the widths of each item’s rails and stiles, as well as which panel raise you choose.

To calculate the minimum height and width of a door or drawer front, add the dimensions as shown in the drawing below (A + B + C + D + E).

*Rail and stile widths are listed by each door design. Otherwise, standard rail/stile widths are as follows:

• Doors have 21/4” rails and stiles.

• Drawer fronts have 11/2” rails and 21/4” stiles.

**Panel reveal and minimum flat dimensions for each panel type are shown on page 44.

CENTER RAILS

Unless otherwise specified on your order, doors over 48” high will automatically get a center rail as shown. This is done for stability purposes. You may request no center rail. However, we do not recommend it, and the door will not be guaranteed against warping.

DOUBLE PANEL

All doors over 24” wide will be made as double panel doors unless specified as single panel. Single panel doors over 24” wide will not be guaranteed.

CUSTOMIZING A DOOR

Start here. Customizing a door is a matter of seven basic choices:

1. Choose a door design (pages 18–42).

2. Choose a framing bead (page 43).

3. Choose a panel type (pages 44–45).

4. Choose a wood species (pages 46–48).

5. Choose a lip/edge profile (page 49).

6. Choose a finish (page 51, and see our Finishes Catalog).

7. Choose additional options (pages 52–53).

1. Door design: SRP-10

2. Framing bead: Traditional

3. Panel type: regular raise

4. Wood species: select white maple

5. Lip/edge profile: Q-2 edge

6. Finish: unfinished

7. Additional option: bore for European hinges

MULTI-LITE AND FRAME-ONLY DOORS

Nearly all Keystone doors are available as multi-lite or frame-only doors. For most designs, the mullion profile matches the framing bead (see page 43). Some exceptions apply. For more designs, see pages 38–41.

SHAKER

Our Shaker doors and drawer fronts are based on the minimalistic style of furniture made by the Shaker religious sect in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their design focuses on function, with square edges, straight lines, and simple wooden hardware. Corner pegs, once functional, now appear as an aesthetic feature of Shaker cabinetry.

Contrasting corner pegs (single or double) are an option available upon request.

Each door is constructed with our solid Pro Cor panels. The inner core of the panel is constructed of lightweight, multi-ply Northwest Whitewood, giving it a high screw hold rating of over 300 pounds. It is available in most wood species and finishing options.

Choose from 18 frame widths: 7/16”, 1/2”, 9/16”, 5/8”, 11/16”, 3/4”, 13/16”, 7/8” 15/16”, 1”, 1 1/16”, 1 1/8”, 1 3/16”, 1 1/4”, 1 5/16”

WOOD SPECIES

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER The infinite varieties in color, grain,* and texture give wood its rich character and natural warmth. There are differences among varying wood species, and even within the same species, no two trees are alike. Climate, light, rainfall, and minerals in the soil all create diverse and unique grain and color patterns in each piece of wood. We’ve prepared the following guidelines to assist you in selecting the right wood for the desired result.

*Grain and color matching that is not acceptable to the customer is replaced at the customer’s expense.

WOOD SPECIES

ALDER

Color ranges from light tan to reddish brown, with almost no distinction between heartwood and sapwood. Alder has a fine texture with partly closed, straight grain similar to cherry. Pin knots are an acceptable characteristic.

ALDER, KNOTTY

Same as alder, except knots and burl are acceptable. Knots vary in size or shape and may be open, forming deep holes.

ASH

The color tones of ash consist of a wide range of cream to light brown with some dark streaks. Burl and pin knots are acceptable. Ash is not selected for color. Panel rips are arranged to form a reasonable blend of grain matching and wood color tones.

BIRCH, NATURAL

A mixture of sapwood and heartwood, it is suitable for dark stains only. Color selection is not available.

BIRCH, WHITE

A white to pale yellowish closed-grained wood, suitable for natural finish as well as light to dark stains. No red heartwood is acceptable.

CHERRY

Cherry may contain some white sapwood. Grain and color are matched to form a reasonable blend. Exposure to light causes cherry to darken with age, revealing a deep reddish-brown tone. Gum pockets are a natural characteristic of cherry.

CHERRY, CLEAR

Same as cherry, except sapwood is not used on face. Sapwood is allowed on backs. Cherry becomes very rich in color tones when finished natural and allowed to age.

HICKORY

Unlike most other wood species, hickory has a unique grain pattern and variety of color tones all its own. Our standard hickory has some pin knots, lots of character and is not selected for color.

HICKORY, KNOTTY

Same as hickory, but with some large knots.

MAHOGANY

Color varies from golden brown to light reddish color tones with occasional pin knots or burl. Mahogany is selected for uniformity in color per job. When ordering, please indicate Natural Finish Grade Mahogany if a specific color range is required.

*Please note: There is an additional cost if a new mahogany order needs to be matched to an existing mahogany cabinetry component.

MAPLE, HARD

Maple is a light brown to creamy tan wood with a subtle grain pattern and is suitable for light to dark stains. Some mineral is acceptable.

MAPLE, SELECT HARD WHITE

Same as maple, except reddish brown heartwood or mineral is not acceptable. Select white maple is recommended for light stains or natural finish.

MAPLE, SOFT

Used mostly for drawers and paint grade doors, soft maple has a range of creamy white to brown to gray color tones. Color is not selected. Soft maple is not recommended for stain or natural finish.

WOOD SPECIES

PAINT GRADE

Paint grade doors and drawer fronts are usually made from soft maple.

PAINT GRADE, SUPERIOR GREEN

Product rails and stiles are solid soft maple. Panels are made from Glacier GreenTM MDF engineered wood panels. They are highly valued for their smooth, unblemished surfaces and homogeneous cores and provide unsurpassed ease of finishing.

PAULOWNIA

Heartwood ranges from a pale, grayish brown to a reddish-purple hue and is not always easily distinguished from the pale white sapwood. Paulownia is a lightweight wood with a straight, open grain that is stable in various environments—making it the perfect selection for boating applications.

PINE, CLEAR

A completely clear grade of pine with no knots. Blue stain is not acceptable.

PINE, KNOTTY

Our knotty pine, a New England furniture grade, has tight red knots and is suitable for rustic-style cabinetry. Filled or loose knots and blue stain are not acceptable.

POPLAR

A soft hardwood, it has a pale yellowish to white color with some green and brown mineral. Not selected for color. Typically used as a paint grade.

PRO-COR

The inner core is constructed of lightweight multi-ply Northwest whitewood, giving it a high screw hold rating of over 300 pounds. The outer crossbands are a high-quality veneered medium-density fiberboard, which acts to prevent telegraphing of the wood grain to the outer surface. It is available in most wood species and finishing options.

RED OAK

Red oak is not selected for color. Defects such as knots and splits are removed. Character, such as burl and pin knots, is acceptable. Mineral is acceptable in the range of 1/8” wide x 5” long. Panel rips are arranged to form a reasonable blend of grain matching and color tones.

RED OAK, SELECT

Dark and medium-dark color tones and mineral are not used. Burl and pin knots are acceptable. Select red oak is recommended for light stains and natural finish.

WALNUT

Walnut may have up to 15% sapwood. Burl and pin knots are acceptable.

WALNUT, CLEAR

Sapwood is not acceptable on the face of a door.

WHITE OAK

A tight open-grained wood with light brown to greenish-gray color tones. Pin knots and burl are allowed. Not selected for color. Panel rips are arranged to form a reasonable blend of grain matching and color tones.

WHITE OAK, QUARTERSAWN

Quartersawn is different than plainsawn only in the way it is cut at the sawmill. Quartersawn is cut radially to the rings or parallel to the rays and produces an edge-grained appearance and is especially suited for reproductions of furniture or cabinetry.

WHITE OAK, RIFT CUT

Rift cut, like quartersawn oak, is different than plainsawn only in the way it is cut at the sawmill. Plainsawn has growth rings that are less than 30˚. Rift cut lumber has growth rings that have a range of 30˚ to 60˚, producing a tight vertical grain.

LIP/EDGE PROFILES

Customize your door/drawer front by choosing a lip/edge profile. All pre-finished doors and drawer fronts must have the lip/ edge profile specified. If no profile is specified on unfinished orders, edges will not be machined.

*Shaker bead is not available on horizontal edges of cope and stick doors and drawer fronts. **Boring for European hinges is NOT available for A, B, C, C-2-BB, CH-2, D, E-2, P, Q, R, or S.

POLISH SANDING & FINISHING

POLISH SANDING

After sanding with 180 grit on a wide belt sander, doors, drawer fronts, and face frames are sanded with a palm random orbit sander with 150 grit sandpaper to remove belt and cross-grain scratches.

We recommend that you prep your doors, drawers, and frames for finishing to ensure a uniform appearance with your cabinets.
