WELCOME TO KEYSTONE TRUST

YOUNG PEOPLE AND THEIR ASPIRATIONS TO CHANGE THEIR LIFE STORY ARE AT THE HEART OF KEYSTONE TRUST’S PURPOSE.

For almost 30 years, Keystone Trust has provided support for young people from challenging backgrounds – both financial and life – to undertake tertiary study towards a professional career in the property and construction industry. We support students with scholarships and provide an integrated industry engagement programme.

Keystone Trust and our family of sponsors create shared value for each other, for the property, construction and infrastructure ecosystem by lifting the capability and capacity of our future leaders.

Keystone Trust is built on the legacy of Graeme Bringans, a Kiwi property developer who was a strong advocate of promoting opportunities for young people to enter the property industry – particularly those with family, financial or other circumstances which may block their path. Son of Timaru Salvation Army officers, Graeme’s dream was to establish a Trust dedicated to helping such young people find their way into the industry. His dream could have ended by his untimely death at the age of 48 years, however, his widow, Binty, and some close friends established the Graeme Bringans Property Education Trust and provided the seed capital.

After a name change in the mid 2000’s, Keystone New Zealand Property Education Trust, known as Keystone Trust, has delivered on its promise to Graeme and the wider industry.

“The principles that underpin Keystone Trust reflect our industry at its best – people coming together to deliver something enduring, inspirational, and life-changing. I am inspired by the raw talent, determination, and humility each student brings with them to Keystone Trust. They are our future, and the fantastic support of our sponsor whanau guarantees that future. Join me as we create greater equity of opportunity in our sectors.”

WHAT DOES KEYSTONE TRUST DO?

Since our beginnings in 1994, Keystone Trust has assisted more than 200 rangatahi who were facing financial or life challenges into the property and construction sectors, awarding some $2million in scholarship funding. In addition, we provide wrap-around support in terms of pastoral care, site visits, career support, mentoring, networking opportunities, introductions to sponsors, work experience and internships.

Each year we receive applications from many more deserving students than we can currently fund. For the 2023 intake we had 66 study award applications and awarded 13 scholarships (20% acceptance rate), 131 Key Scholarship Partner applications with 12 scholarships awarded (10% acceptance rate). From two students in 1995, today we have 57 students on our programme - a 50% increase since 2019 – and all this is due to the growing support from industry.

We value the commitment made by our current whānau of industry partners and supporters, and invite you to join us to create New Zealand’s future property and construction leaders.

We are the only Trust in Aotearoa, New Zealand, established to support the property and construction sector.

ACTIVATING YOUR BROADER OUTCOMES

Keystone Trust is a conduit between our industry and its future leaders through a values-based approach. We seek to deliver on our shared values to ensure broader community, economic, social, and cultural outcomes. There is a growing desire and demand from the community and ultimately from government through its tender processes that companies engage in a meaningful way with the communities they work in. Keystone Trust provides evidence to support the claims of those broader outcomes.

Business processes are changing to reflect government’s outcomes-based agenda. Keystone Trust can be part of your sustainability (in its broadest sense) and ESG journey to align values and goals, win more business, and deliver on your KPIs.

Below is an example of what this could look like for your company.

OUR GOAL

OUR VALUES ARE PREDICATED ON A SET OF INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED GOALS –THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (UNSDG s ).

In September 2015, the United Nations and its member states – New Zealand included – signed up to 17 SDGs. These goals and targets are known as Agenda 2030.

The Trust has a keen focus on subgoal 4.4, which states that by 2030, Aotearoa/New Zealand hopes to substantially increase the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, decent jobs, and entrepreneurship opportunities.

We seek to provide opportunities for our sponsor whanau to support more rangatahi from priority populations (ie. Maori, Pasifika and disadvantaged) into a professional career in the property and construction sectors.

We do this by providing pastoral care, financial support and industry engagement which results in pathways to employment.

WHY KEYSTONE TRUST?

WE KNOW OUR PROGRAMME WORKS. OUR ALUMNI ARE PROOF POSITIVE OF THE SUCCESS OF KEYSTONE TRUST AS THEY ARE NOW FUTURE LEADERS OF INDUSTRY.

We also have evidence our programme not only works for our students, but also by uniting the New Zealand property and construction sector with the common goal of seeing these young leaders succeed. Keystone Trust has developed a platform for industry and community success.

“At Hawkins we have been selective about where we invest, ensuring our energy is aligned with the right partners and outcomes. Supporting Keystone Trust just feels right and links nicely to the pillars of our business. Attending your Awards Evening cemented for me that it is highly valuable, and the

quality of individuals the industry is supporting is something else.”

WHAT IS THE INVESTMENT REQUIRED TO MAKE SUCH A DIFFERENCE?

tertiary student sponsor

Sponsorship packages start with an annual commitment of $10,000 plus GST, with funding targeted to support the Study Award recipients.

Your sponsorship would directly impact 38 students studying throughout New Zealand towards their professional qualification. You would ensure they:

• receive an annual scholarship of $5,500 per annum for up to three years,

• have access to a wide range of support from the Keystone Trust team including:

• site visits

• networking and mentoring opportunities

• access to internships

• first year study-buddy

• work experience

• an alumni group

• workshops and events

Those whose degrees are in excess of three years, continue to receive our pastoral support until they graduate.

Alternatively you could step up to a higher level of involvement by supporting a particular student.

KEY SCHOLARSHIP PARTNER (KSP)

For $18,000, plus GST per annum, you could lift your commitment and your involvement by investing in a Key Scholarship Partnership. Recruitment can be time consuming. As a KSP, we take away the hard work and provide you with a short list of phenomenally talented young people who are part way to completing their tertiary study.

In addition to supporting the wider Trust activities as outlined prior ($10,000), we would work with you to create a scholarship tailored to your company’s needs where specific qualifications can be accommodated. Keystone would work with tertiary organisations to promote your scholarship and your company to attract your preferred students. The scholarship would be jointly branded, and we would invite your active participation in the scholarship selection process.

The student would receive a $5,500 scholarship for one year, and of the remaining sum, $3,000 is dedicated to the promotion and management of your scholarship application process and the remainder goes to support the work of the Trust.

KEYstone school leaver

SCHOLARSHIP PARTNER (KslsP) high school student

This sponsorship is for a company to directly support and champion a young person through their degree. Providing them with much needed financial support not just by a $5,500 scholarship per year for three years, but with paid work experience. Also, providing them where possible with a workspace or other support eg: access to photocopying, stationery supplies.

The investment for this scholarship is $13,000 plus GST for the first year, $15,000 plus GST per year for two years. The cycle restarts with the fourth year at $18,000 plus GST, once your student graduates from the programme. You can then recruit a new scholarship applicant.

PREMIUM PARTNER

As a Premium Partner, you’ll have the opportunity to tailor a sponsorship package that suits your focus area of investment. Your annual contribution will be used according to your organisation’s goals, with your sponsorship funds directed towards the areas you most want to support.

If you wish, you will also be able to create a scholarship that recognises an individual within your organisation – a brilliant way to honour someone within your company and help them leave a legacy.

Your investment for this premium level of engagement is $50,000 plus GST per year for three years.

other investment opportunities

Events are a great way to engage with audiences on an emotional level. Keystone Trust has a number of other opportunities, and these can be included in a comprehensive sponsorship portfolio which we craft together.

For example, we are seeking sponsor support to fund the Student Workshop scheduled every February prior to the start of the academic year where we invite all students to a two-day weekend of workshops, team building and industry engagement.

The annual Rugby Lunch is a prestigious event on the industry calendar. We invite a sponsor to work with us to create unique engagement opportunities for their products with our niche audience.

The Trust’s ultimate event is the annual Awards Evening. Here we celebrate the successes of our students, alumni and sponsors with our whole community. It is a celebration of all that the Trust represents.

We look forward to discussing these opportunities in more depth with you.

ACHIEVING COLLECTIVE IMPACT

WE KNOW THAT AN ALMOST ‘CRADLE TO CAREER’ APPROACH IS REQUIRED TO SUPPORT OUR RANGATAHI ON THEIR PATHWAY TO SUCCESS. FIXING ONE PART, WON’T FIX ALL THE PARTS ON THE CONTINUUM SO A SYSTEMS APPROACH IS NECESSARY. THROUGH OUR PROGRAMME WE CAN ACHIEVE A COLLECTIVE IMPACT, ENABLE SOCIAL PROCUREMENT, AND CREATE SHARED VALUE IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

Our social impact research shows:

• The field of study is one of the most important factors influencing the economic return from a tertiary education.

• Another important factor is the level of the qualification studied whether the qualification is completed or not.

• The majority of our students complete a Bachelors degree, although a small number do continue on to complete Honours Bachelor or Masters degrees.

• It has been demonstrated that the premium for studying such a higher level of tertiary qualification adds on average a further 20% earnings premium to that of the Bachelors degree premium of 30%, compared with only achieving school NCEA qualifications.

• Once having completed their tertiary education, Keystone Trust alumni are likely to earn premiums (at the median) over those with only school qualifications of about 30%, and over those with no qualifications of about 60%.

• Keystone Trust doesn’t support all of the costs of a student's study, but given that the Keystone Trust students would be unlikely to have the opportunity to complete a Bachelors degree without the Trust’s support, it is valid to consider all of the resulting earnings premiums as benefits of the Trust support.

• There are also non-financial benefits which are shown to include improved health outcomes, lower mortality rates, lower unemployment and the “sibling effect”. A “first in family” sibling attending tertiary study provides the information and knowledge to other family members to follow.

We can state that the return on investment from our sponsors to the nation is six-fold –for every $1.00 invested, the return is $6.00.

Become a member of our sponsor whānau and you will be part of the change our communities seek. Creating pathways to opportunity, building capacity and capability, and lifting aspirations of the next generation. We look forward to working with you for a better future and a better industry – nationally.

Perhaps the final word should be from an alumni, whose story is worth hearing.

FULL CIRCLE

“My days started at Lytton High School in Gisborne and looking back I had no clue of what was to come. The most I knew about the construction sector was labouring for my Dad on a building site and I knew that wasn’t going to be for me.

“Fortunately, I had a great careers advisor, Craig Wilkie, who saw more potential in me than I probably saw in myself. I remember Craig saying to me “set your sights higher and make yourself some goals” I had been trying to escape from my situation back home with my parents splitting up when I was young and four younger siblings to look out for. My Nan was sick, so as the eldest son, I was packed off to look after her. I was a bit of a survivor, I was also pretty independent back then, taking off to Raglan or Dunedin and sleeping on couches was a pretty normal weekend.

“Anyhow Craig’s words stuck, and to my surprise I graduated from school as one of their top students. With Craig’s input I had filled out my Keystone scholarship application and this is when everything changed.

“The next I knew I was in Auckland, for the first time in my life, going up to a fancy office in the Sun Alliance building and meeting ten high-flyers, who were the Keystone selection panel. Mum had told me to always shake hands and I made sure I did. I wouldn’t say I was nervous, just super pumped at being there. When I returned to Gisborne, I got the call, I had the scholarship. Awesome!

“This is where the Keystone support system kicked in, uni days started at Wintec in Hamilton. With a strength for numbers I fell into Quantity Surveying. Then with the support of my mentors at Keystone came a move to Auckland, working as cadet for Multiplex, and finishing my studies at Unitec. I was always being told “You are capable of anything” and I found

out I was. Keystone were right behind me all the way. Jumping to today, I am a director of C3 Construction, a firm I established with two other business colleagues. We are a growing construction company and I am now in a position to employ Keystone Trust alumni. We have just taken on a young quantity surveyor into the team who was a student back in 2016.”

Tamati is now a trustee on the Keystone Board of Trustees, and three years ago with his fellow directors established a school leaver scholarship.

“Looking back, I can see the difference Keystone made to my life, they inspired me to reach those goals I had set with Craig. I look up to all the students who went before me, and the people I have met through these networks are now some of my best mates. Its inspiring to see how the organisation has grown and now, it’s my turn to give back.”

“Being awarded a scholarship launched my career in the construction industry. Through Keystone Trust I had access to industry leaders, support and encouragement, and financial help. They opened the door for me and led me to my first internship. Without this opportunity I would not be where I am today. I can never thank Keystone Trust and the sponsors enough!””
