Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Limited (REAL) then announced it would challenge the decision to block the scheme, which aimed to turn food waste intoCampaignenergy. group Protect Our Keynsham Environment (POKE), which has been leading the fight against the plans, began a fundraising campaign in anticipation of a planning inquiry scheduled for October. Kerry Morgan, who chairs POKE, said: “Protect Our Keynsham Environment (POKE) has been advised via Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES) that Resourceful Energy Anaerobic Limited have withdrawn their appeal to build a supersized anaerobic digester facility at the Queen Charlton quarry“Thissite.isgood

The news has been welcomed by local B&NES councillors. Councillor Alan Hale (Keynsham South) said: “An extremely big thank-you has to be paid to the outstanding work and efforts of Kerry Morgan and POKE.“Kerry has been working constantly to foil the appeal and her efforts have won through to the benefit of everyone who would have been adversely affected by this development, which would have brought odours, wind-blown spores and heavy goods vehicles infesting the local roads.” Cllr Alastair Singleton (Saltford) said: “I welcome the news that REAL have abandoned their appeal. Their plans for the Charlton Field Lane site were always ill-conceived and would have led to great harm to our communities, as well as many negative impacts on the environment.“Thisisavictory for good sense and reflects great credit on B&NES Council and the determined and consistent opposition led by POKE involving very many activists and residents locally.”

The town council states: “The proposed development is contrary to Bristol City Council’s proposal for the site of a new neighbourhood of 750 houses, and the Bristol Local Plan, which is currently being prepared, indicates that the land will be removed from the green belt as part of a new neighbourhood. “It is essential that Bristol City Council continue with their new neighbourhood plans, to meet their and the South West’s housing requirements, as laid down by Government. Once the application is registered with Bristol City Council, Keynsham Town Council would welcome the opportunity to make further representations.”

The scheme consists of a three-storey building at the Keynsham end of the site, together with 70 to 80 two-storey units for office or light industrial use near the Hicks Gate roundabout.

BMX-mad Keynsham brothers Senshu and Kaishu Flukes are celebrating success at the world championships in Nantes, France.Senshu, 11, is now world number six in the 20” category, giving him the right to display a ‘W’ number plate on his bike for the next year. The youngster splits his free time between cycling and his other passion, playing with Longwell Green football team. Kaishu, 14, was one of the youngest in the 15 to 16 age category, because his birthday falls just before the cut-off point where age groups are measured. He was the only British rider to make it through to the semifinals, where he was knocked out. Overall, he finished 24th out of 150 riders in the cruiser category.Their mother, Yoshiko UnoFlukes, said: “It was quite scary seeing Kaishu racing against the 16-year-olds, because some of those kids are really big. “Next year, though, he’ll have more chance as he won’t be so young within the category.” Next year’s championshipsworldarein Glasgow, which will be less of a journey for the family. They had to swap their car for a van in order to cart the boys’ bikes around from championship to championship, and try to arrange their family holidays around the tournaments.Thisyear, dad Jamie brought along his own father, who is half French, so they could revisit old childhood haunts around Brittany.Bothboys honed their cycling skills on the pump track in Longwell Green, and now train with Bath BMX and Bristol BMX.

Boy racers ‘keeping us awake at night’

n NEWS

RESIDENTS are calling for action against boy racers who are keeping them awake at night in Keynsham.Neighbours have reportedly endured years of disturbed sleep in the Charlton Road area. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, lives with their family near the roundabout linking Charlton Road and Linnet Way. The resident said: “We have endured this for almost three years now. Late at night, from around 9pm onward, there are many cars racing down on this street at very high speed causing loud noises from tyre-spinning and deafening roaring engine. “The noise is so loud it wakes us and our young children up. “Moreover, there are teenagers intentionally lapping around the roundabout at high speed while opening their windows and laughing. “I also noticed, on a few occasions, people were racing and dangerously cutting each other off by going on the opposite lane just before the roundabout.” The parent has spoken to neighbours who say their sleep has also been disturbed. “My request is to please install CCTV or a speed camera at this roundabout and have more traffic officers to reduce the dangerous driving in our residential area, where there are lots of young children.” The resident contacted Bath and North East Somerset Council about the issue. In response, an environmental health officer said traffic noise was exempt from the council’s noise legislation provisions, and recommended contacting the police about speeding traffic. Alan Hale, B&NES councillor for the area, has been in contact with the resident. He said: “Charlton Road suffers from irresponsible drivers throughout the day who exceed the speed limit. However, this is clearly a different and more worrying set of circumstances that needs addressing. Sadly, the speed detection team of Avon and Somerset are very limited in number and of course have the whole of the Avon and Somerset police area to cover. “Similarly, the roads policing department was significantly reduced some years ago to a level where a traffic patrol car or motorcycle are rarely seen.” “However the concerns of my constituent are important to me and I will write to the police locally to ask them to give as much attention to the problem as they are Meanwhile, able.” the resident is hoping some remedy to the problem can be found. “All I really need for a safer neighbourhood is just one functional speed camera installed at the roundabout in order to catch or at least deter those irresponsible drivers.

The Voice approached local police for comment but had not received a response by the time we went to press.

“At the end of the day, I just want to improve the safety for my neighbourhood and most importantly for my children.”

The council states: “We are inviting comments from the public to determine if we should take the proposals forward as proposed, varied or rejected.” The proposals are include new charges at Park and Ride car parks for those not using the service.

SALTFORD Hall has a bright new look after a project to spruce up its wooden floors.

PARKING charges in Keynsham are set to rise this autumn. A two-hour stay at Ashton Way would go up from 40p to 60p under the proposals, while the cost of a threehour stay would rise from 90p to £1.20. There would be similar rises at other short-stay car parks in the town. Charges at long-stay car parks such as Bath Hill East would go up from £1.60 to £2.40 for eight hours, and from £2.10 to £3 for 10 hours. Season-ticket costs in the town are set to rise from £19.80 a month to £39. Bath and North East Somerset Council is consulting the public on the proposals, which would also include new seasonal parking charges at The Shallows in Saltford. The decision to increase off-street parking charges throughout B&NES was agreed by the council in February as part of its Councillorbudget-setting.MandaRigby, cabinet member for transport, said: “Changes to permit and car parking charges are aimed at shifting the way we get around and encouraging walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport, which in turn eases congestion, improves air quality and helps with our Journey to Net Zero ambitions. The proposed price increases are relatively small, and only the second time we have raised parking and permit prices in the last 12 years, with the most recent being in August 2018.”Charges at The Shallows - 30p an hour, 60p for two hours and 90p for three hours -would apply from April 1 to September 30. A free stay during October to March would requires a free activation via MiPermit. A no-return period of four hours will apply all year to encourage increased turnover and prevent a vehicle from parking all Councillorday.Rigby said: “We’re encouraging people to have their say on these proposals through our online consultation.”Theconsultation closes on Thursday September 15 and can be viewed at and-permit-charges-consultationhttps://beta.bathnes.gov.uk/parking-

AS I’ve mentioned before, I am the national police and crime commissioner lead for economic and cybercrime and, along with my team, I continue to work with Avon and Somerset Police and partners to raise awareness of the signs of fraud and prevent local people from becoming victims in the first place. As part of this work, we have distributed fraud protection postcards to over 160,000 households across 60 postcodes in Avon and Somerset. You can find this postcard in this edition of the Voice,, for you to cut out and keep beside your phone, pin on your fridge or by your front door. I want local people to use this postcard, so if and when a scammer contacts you, you know how to spot the signs of fraud and protect yourself. The postcard is also available on my website to download and print. Moving on, I’m delighted to tell you about the fantastic results of the latest Operation Scorpion, the regional crackdown on drugs. Colleagues across the South West region carried out operations to disrupt drug supply and prevent drug crime, alongside carrying out preventative, educational and engagement work within communities.InAvonand Somerset there were almost 700 acts of disruption, including 17 arrests for drugrelated offences, 12 warrants in relation to properties and people linked to drug supply, two county lines disrupted, thousands of pounds worth of class A drugs and cannabis seized and 147 visits or safeguarding checks to addresses of vulnerable people. These results are sending a strong message to both criminals and our communities that we are intent on making the South West no place for drugs. The first priority in my police and crime plan is preventing and fighting crime, and not only does this include important enforcement activity but also education work, to make our communities a safer place. Finally, local businesses can now access Police CyberAlarm, a free tool designed to help organisations understand and monitor the threat they face from malicious cyber activity.Police CyberAlarm, which is government funded, acts like a CCTV camera and monitors the traffic seen by business connections to the internet. The tool will show local businesses how they are being attacked, the source of the attack and will also help law enforcement identify current threats to take action against cyber criminals.Police CyberAlarm can benefit any business with a computer network, including SMEs, not for profit organisations, public and private sector, charities, education establishments and local government. This included 46 reports in total, of which 17 were in the fortnight after opening, 21 in the following month (April) and eight in May. It was noted that some of the logged reports were multiple reports about the same event.

CHANGES have been made to Keynsham High Street after reported trips, falls and collisions.Redtarmac has been installed along the length of the cycle lane, and more cycle symbol markings have been painted along the lane. The width of the solid white lane marking the edge of the lane has also be reduced. The work has been carried out by Bath and North East Somerset Council following complaints from the Councillorpublic.Manda Rigby, cabinet member for transport, said: “People’s safety is our first priority. We have listened to concerns from residents and sought advice to solve the issues that have been raised.” A recent road safety audit of the High Street scheme referred to “the risk of trips and falls, cyclists being unseated and conflicts with vehicles”, but the council said the audit team ultimately found “no fundamental issues” with the design or construction. The new changes are intended to make the cycle lane easier for pedestrians to see, as well as avoiding any trips and falls. Councillor Rigby added: “We are acting on both recommendations from the audit and the design exercise. We will also add some extra planters in the forthcoming months, which we hope will further improve safety by directing people more clearly towards the pedestrian crossings.“Weare keeping the High Street under close review and will be meeting on a quarterly basis with the highway authority to ensure safety is maintained.”

CAMPAIGNERS say they want to raise awareness of the health effects of 5G following the decision to allow a phone mast at Broadlands Academy in Keynsham.Aspreviously reported in the Voice, Vodafone and Telefonica UK Ltd (O2) have been granted permission to replace the current 4G mast - with an overall height of 17.9 metres - with a 5G mast measuring 20 metres. Bath and North East Somerset Council approved the scheme in the face of more than 160 objections, including health concerns that were echoed by Keynsham Town Council. Campaigners opposed to 5G masts gathered outside Broadlands Academy on the last day of summer term. One of the campaigners, Karen Churchill, said they wanted to make parents, teachers and others in the area of the mast to be aware of the potential effects of wireless radiation so they could spot any subsequent symptoms. She said local councils such as B&NES are mistakenly trusting the central government to ensure that 5G is safe when making planning decisions.

“It’s hard to get officials to look at the evidence we’re giving them. They are under pressure to adopt the technology and the government are not informing them of the risks”.

PART TIME NEGOTIATOR ROLE

Awareness campaign over 5G ‘risks’

Karen hopes that the more people become aware of the science, the greater the chance of stopping the spread of 5G masts. She cited the case of a proposed mast in Frome being refused permission because of a lack of safety Broadlandsbreakthrough“Thatevidence.wasamassiveforus.”Thedecisionaboutthemastswasdelegated to a council officer despite a request from Keynsham councillor Brian Simmons for it to be decided by members of B&NES Council’s planning committee. The officer’s report said the application complied with ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) public exposure guidelines, which include consideration of the health of children and individuals thought to be sensitive to radiofrequency. l More details about the Judicial Review are available at actionagainst5g.org. A Judicial Review challenge, led by Michael Mansfield QC, is now proceeding against what is described as “the failure to provide adequate and sufficient reasons for not establishing a process to investigate and establish the adverse health effects and risks of adverse health effects from 5G technology.”Karenalso cited the New Hampshire State Commission that studied the health and environmental impacts of wireless includingcommunications, mobilephonesand 5G. Professor Kent Chamberlin, who served on the US commission, said the study concluded that mobile phone radiation “poses a significant threat to human health and the environment.”Karensaid: “We don’t want to be sensationalist or fear-mongering. It’s about the science.”Shesaid some people are affected more than others by wireless radiation. “In Bath, some people can’t leave their homes because street wifi is so intense. People feel sick and get headaches. Up to 30% of the population have some form of electro-sensitivity and 3% can’t work. There’s no refuge for theseShepeople.”advised people who are concerned to search the internet for the following: Mothers for Safe Technology, RF Info at rfinfo.co.uk, and the Environmental Health Trust website at ehtrust.org. Karen said: “It’s about educating ourselves.” She precautionsrecommendedsuchasnot holding your mobile phone to your ear, not sitting close to your router, turning wifi off at night, and using wired instead of wireless where“Wepossible.needto follow through. We are being controlled by an industry. The cost to the environment is unthinkable.”

ON THE BEAT

n Keynsham has managed to host several key events over the summer, including the music festival, fake festival, beer and cider festivals and fetes. I’m please to say we have had good feedback about these events and have attended as many as possible. Our mobile police station has also been running beat surgeries and conducting bike-marking events. Our beat surgeries allow people to talk about local issues. This month’s are planned for: Saturday September 10 in Keynsham Library, 10am11am; Wednesday Sept 14 in the community building at The Mead, 10am-11am, and also at Community at 67, Queens Road, 9am-11am; and Thursday Sept 15 at the Methodist Church, High Street, 9am-11am.

The Neighbourhood Policing Team have been supporting our response policing colleagues this summer due to increased demand, but we have still been working hard to deal with all the issues being reported in and around Keynsham.

COMMUNITY at 67 has something for everyone when it reopens this month. It has a maths group and a weekly coding club for young people, a weekly mums’ group and a weekly coffee morning.

The charity in Queens Road, Keynsham, also runs a weekly coffee and craft group. This year it is working with the Wellbeing College to offer courses on topics such as emotional freedom, mindfulness, and introduction to meditation. Anyone who wants to develop their digital skills can drop into the weekly internet café, run by friendly volunteers.

The centre also hosts sessions provided by groups hiring the premises. If you are looking to set up a group and need somewhere to meet, Community at 67 offers a well-equipped kitchen, wifi and a loop system. For more details, visit www. community-67.org or ring 07737 742300. n

The town seems to have turned into something of a car park because of road works and closures. Thank you for your patience, and we hope these works will come to an end soon. Please be aware of these issues if they are still in place when students return to school after the holidays. If you don’t need to drive to drop them off at the gates, please don’t. We can all help cut congestion by making other arrangements or dropping students off around the corner. With that being said, we would like to welcome the new students to all of our schools, and we on the Neighbourhood Team look forward to meeting them through our school visits, and crime and consequences inputs. This brings us onto the main issue schools have, which is with social media and the online bullying/unwanted contact this can entail. Make sure you read and understand the terms and conditions of social media websites and what their expectations are for appropriate content/comments.

n You may recall we had reports of youths causing damage in the Teviot Road area and Hygge Park in Keynsham, where windows had been smashed and vehicles damaged. We managed to locate the offenders and link them to other crimes. They have admitted their roles in these offences, and have been put before the youth panel. A youth panel looks at the severity of offences and the best form of disposal, whether that be low-level restorative justice or sending offenders to court. The aim is to give the young people access to support to help them stop re-offending.

Take the well-known Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), the pollinator-friendly wildflower (look out for the bees that love to feed on the blooms). This can also be eaten as a salad vegetable, health food or a wine flavouring, so it is familiar to many people. It is a perennial (i.e. comes back every year) and is found in grassland, roadsides, Keynsham Memorial Park, lawns and waste ground, and flowers from March to October. The flowers are bright yellow and the seed heads (dandelion clocks), when ripe, blow everywhere!Thecommon name comes from old French, “dents de lion” or lion’s teeth, referring to the leaf shape. Dandelion root can be harvested when the plant is three to four years old, and roasted as a coffee are a source of vitamins and minerals, while the roots are full of soluble fibre and can be dried and made into herbal teas. Traditional herbal medicine uses dandelion for its diuretic effect, so be warned! Lesser Burdock (Arctium minus) is a biennial, forming a crown in its first year then shooting up over a metre in its second year as it flowers.Theflowers are dull purple and look like thistles; they come into their own when ripe, with the hooked bracts behind the seed heads clinging onto woolly clothing and animal fur, the latter being the original mode of dispersal. Interestingly, these clinging properties led to the invention of the hook and loop fastener, aka Velcro. The plant is found on waste ground, in hedges and woods, plus there is a large contingent near the bandstand in Keynsham Memorial Park. And again, the flower heads provide essential pollen and nectar for bees later in the summer. The stout taproot is valued for its flavouring in wine, in particular “dandelion and burdock”, and must be harvested in the first winter (similar to parsnips, which would also go to seed in their second year). The blend of burdock root and dandelion extracts naturally promotes good digestion, and is also powerful as a general tonic for the whole body and for those who suffer from eczema-like conditions, as well as psoriasis and acne-prone skin. So, how do you make a dandelion and burdock beverage? If you were back in the Middle Ages, you would ferment dandelion and burdock roots to make a type of light mead, but nowadays it has evolved into a carbonated soft drink, available from many supermarkets. But there are still lots of recipes out there if you fancy having a go at making your own. Just watch out, as you must have the land-owner’s permission to dig up burdock roots, although digging up persistent “weeds” is not usually a problem! l Following an error in our contact details in last month’s Voice, if you would like more information about our Hedgehog Street campaign and the hedgehog highway surrounds, please get in touch with us by email: keynshamawt@gmail. com Liz Wintle

September and the start of autumn brings a bonanza of food in the countryside for our wildlife, with seeds, berries and fungi galore available to them. But what about us? We love to pick a blackberry or two for pies and crumbles, or sloes to make sloe gin. But there are many other wild plants we can forage too, if we are careful and know what we are looking for!

Many years ago, I was driving a minibus to take a group of teenagers on an activity weekend. I noticed a red warning light on the dashboard indicating an overheating problem and upon further inspection it revealed a damaged fan belt. We completed a temporary repair and continued with the journey. Upon our return journey, the warning light appeared again and this time no repair was possible, so I acted in the way that many men do in relation to physical health symptoms - I ignored the problem and hoped it would go away. After all, we didn’t have much further to go and surely we could limp home and then fix it later? You are probably able to predict what happened next. Let’s just say that it involved a minibus filling up with smoke, a quick evacuation of passengers onto the motorway hard shoulder, a cooked engine block and a very large garage bill. My actions didn’t exactly improve my reputation as a responsible youth leader. Even now, the whole incident still haunts me. However, I did learn an important lesson that you shouldn’t ignore warning signs. Recent global events throw up similar warnings. The financial crash in 2008, which led to the nationalisation of several banks and to ten years of financial austerity for our public services, told us that self-regulation of large and complex financial transactions doesn’t work, banks are too big to fail, globalisation doesn’t minimise risk and that government support is needed.TheCovid pandemic has shown us that small government and the market alone cannot support our economy in times of crisis and that once again massive public intervention is required to support employment, businesses and markets.Thewar in Ukraine has also revealed how exposed and vulnerable we are to supply shortages of food and fuel and how dependent we are upon various transport hubs and pinch points. These events have exposed our vulnerability, revealing insecurity, depleted public services, falling living standards for many and now a huge cost of living crisis with rising inflation. It all seems a bit grim and rather frightening. However, if we are to learn nothing from such events, we are in danger of repeating my foolish mistake with the overheating minibus. Jesus warned about ignoring warning signs. He spoke about such events as ‘birth-pains’ (Matthew 24:8) or indications that something important needs our attention. Such events are part of a bigger picture about how we have chosen to live, work and do business.Ago-it-alone attitude towards these big issues does not make them magically go away. We are constantly reminded of our interconnectedness, our dependency upon each other and about our need to have a serious look at some of the economic and political assumptions we have made. The Bible speaks of the need to repent or change our minds and direction and return to God, to each other, and how God wants us to live together. It takes a lot of courage to admit that we need to stop, turn around and follow a different path, but just like my overheating minibus, the consequences of doing otherwise are very serious.

The council wants to encourage more people to use the zebra crossing. But Susan said it was “ludicrous” to expect someone who needed the shop directly opposite to walk or use a chair to travel 30 yards to the crossing – often with difficulty and in pain –and then 30 yards back again.

DISABILITY campaigners say safety concerns they raised about the Keynsham High Street refurbishment project were ignored.

“It’s just another hazard, as are the growing ‘A’ boards advertising shops which are not always put in the same place day to day.”Susan said that B&NES Council’s equality team had asked the access group to meet a member of the High Street project team so members could comment on the proposals.

Susan Charles, chair of Access B&NES, says Bath and North East Somerset Council consulted the group before work went ahead but did not act on the issues they highlighted. Following a road safety audit, the council made changes last month that included laying a red surface on the cycle lane, reducing the width of the white line marking the cycle lane’s edge, and increasing the number of cycle symbol markings. But Susan said the changes would not improve access for visitors, who had previously been attracted by the street’s level nature. She also questioned whether making the cycle lane red would be helpful for people who are colour blind. Susan said the different levels that shoppers had to negotiate were “no joke” for those with mobility problems.

She suggests making the road, pavement and cycle path the same level; a 10mph speed limit for one-way vehicles; and cyclists to disembark at the start of the street and push their cycle to the end, or cycle around Ashton Way with other traffic. In response, Councillor Manda Rigby, B&NES cabinet member for transport, said: “We want our High Streets to be safe, welcoming and accessible for all. “The alternative design being put forward would not be consistent with current national policy and guidance on highway design or inclusive mobility and so we are unable to pursue“Weit.listened very carefully to the comments made during the consultation on the Keynsham High Street scheme, including those from accessibility groups including Access B&NES, and we incorporated feedback into the scheme wherever possible. “For example, there are level crossing points on raised tables provided at frequent intervals along the High Street, there is additional public seating and there are also additional disabled parking bays. “I believe the current scheme properly balances the different needs of people who use Keynsham High Street and has significantly improved this key local centre.”

‘Disability fears ignored’ in High Street

The council aims to add extra planters to the street in the future, but Susan said these would pose an obstacle to blind or partially sighted people.

“When the refurb was completed, many of the changes had not been shown on the original plans and were certainly not improvements for those who are mobility challenged. Everything else was as the original plan showed that day. “Decision made. We were not listened to, or our comments considered.” She added: “This latest plan will have cyclist weaving in and out of pedestrians who don’t understand the contrasting colour.” Susan says the scheme should give priority to pedestrians, which would also increase trade for shops in the street.

This month our Beavers hiked to the top of Kelston Roundhill and new members were invested into the colony, followed by some amazing cup cakes and squash at the picnic area.Cubs were kayaking on the river in Saltford making the most of being close to the water. They love to get wet - not sure their parents are too keen when they get in the car to go home, but the smiles on their faces make it all worthwhile. Leaders joined in the fun too and got equally wet in the process. Scouts had a week-long camp thanks to the leader team who gave up their time to take them. They enjoyed a bike ride, survival camping, caving, archery and much more. n Argus ESU is the section for 14 to 18-year-olds linked to our group, but is not directly part of 1st Saltford Scout Group. The Argus ESU tradition is to invest new members whilst off the ground, so we started by building a structure large and stable enough to hold everyone in attendance. As only two members of the unit were due to be invested (one Leader and one Young Person), the Leader, Will, invested the 10 new Young People and the Young Person, while Austin invested the two new Leaders. This takes us to three Leaders and 11 Young People - a nice step of growth since we ‘rebooted’ under new leadership in January 2021. For information on joining us or volunteering, email saltfordscoutgroup@gmail. com We are always looking for volunteers to lighten the load. Commitment can be from an hour or so a month to an hour or so a week, depending on the role. We need help for our committee, leadership team, press and social media, fundraising and maintenance. If your over 18, it’s a great opportunity to get scout volunteering onto your CV. Prospective employers respect the support you give us.

Dr Edward Long Fox was a most interesting man; he came from a Quaker family and moved to Bristol about 1785, where he worked in general practice and at the Bristol Infirmary. He also had a role at the “madhouse” at Cleve Hill in Downend, started by Dr Richard Henderson. At a time when “lunatics” were treated harshly and without compassion, Cleve Hill was run in a very different way, and indeed was praised by John Wesley after he visited. Fox was impressed and bought Cleve after Dr Henderson retired.Hebelieved strongly that the best approach to treating insanity was through therapeutic surroundings and activities but concluded that Cleve Hill was inadequate for its purpose. He decided to design and build a new asylum to put his ideas in to practice. To this end he bought the Brislington estate in 1799 –land which had once been part of Brislington common – and spent several years planning and building the country’s first private purpose-built asylum. This was essentially an asylum for the wealthy, although accommodation was split into three social classes, as well as by sex. Patients included a small number of paupers, paid for by their parish. The first patients were admitted in 1806 and each class had a separate house, with a garden/court, which included a raised area within, so they could take exercise and enjoy the views over the countryside but could not escape over the surrounding wall. Inside, sports, music, pastimes and church services helped to provide relaxing surroundings to aid recovery. Unlike conventional asylums, physical restraint was used only when absolutely unavoidable.Brislington House was regarded as showing best practice; it influenced legislation, and many of its design features were copied elsewhere.

walking group volunteers Registered Charity: 202151 Sunday July 10 was probably the hottest day of the year so far, which accounted for the slightly reduced numbers on our walk - which was a shame as our stalwart leader Derek Butler had found a gem. It was in glorious sunshine that 13 of us met up at the Tunnell House on Saltford High Street. We headed west along the track by the railway line and into the countryside. At the bridge over the railway, we turned right along a footpath to the River Avon. We followed the river past Swineford Weir and could see the Avon Lane Estate with its shepherd huts and holiday cottages. Later we passed the nonsmelling sewerage works - or Saltford Laboratory for Water Recycling as it is now called - and finished at the Bird in Hand, where Colin and his staff made us very welcome. Then we were homeward bound for a restful afternoon. Two weeks later, on July 24, it was the elite that set out from the Ring of Bells at Priston for the most difficult walk of the year. Only 11 hardy souls turned up. The first part was fairly easy until we got to Priston Mill. Crossing fields of corn, up hill and down dale, it was with great relief that we arrived at the halfway point of Wolmington, but there were still uphill struggles to come. Walking via country lanes, we reached the high point and we then relieved of the downhill walk to Priston back to the Ring of Bells. The views were spectacular and worth the hardship. The best walk of the year so far was on Sunday August 7. Emma Norris of the GWR Community Fund had given us free return tickets to Bradford on Avon. A total of 25 of us took advantage of the offer, and it was under cloudless skies that we met at Keynsham Station to catch the train. Richard Craft, who helps run Bradford on Avon Walkers are Welcome, had recommended a walk and what to look out for. The first part was along the towpath of the scenic River Avon to Avoncliffe, where we stopped to admire its famous aquaduct. Then it was a steepish uphill section to the village of Westwood. We have been advised to look out for the hunky punks which adorned the walls of its church; we were also able to see inside and find The Old Lad of Westwood.Carrying on through this village, we continued back to Bradford on Avon, admiring the spectacular views across the Wiltshire countryside. This was a fairly flat section across many fields but 14 wooden stiles meant progress was not as fast as programmed, and it was almost three hours after the start that we arrived back at our destination - and the walk was only four miles long. We then had an hour and a half to explore the town before catching the train home. It was the first time we had seen kingfishers, deer and piglets on one of our walks, and what a cracking walk it turned out to be.

The service, which has been running for two years, collects up to a tonne of surplus food every month from local suppliers and makes it available from a fridge in Temple Street Canteen. Mike Burke, missioner and team vicar for Keynsham Parish, who was involved in setting up the fridge, said: “The food is free and available to everyone, and we are making a real difference in reducing the amount of food going to food waste and to helping people who are facing food poverty. “The fridge is needed now more than ever, but we also need some more help. We need some extra volunteers to help collect and sort the food, as well as some people who can help us to manage and oversee the management of the fridge.” Anyone interested in helping can email Mike at Mikeburke@ keynshamparish.org.uk.

Kelesie, aged 19, recently finished a five-month stint at B Block pizzeria, where she worked once a week while a student at Warmley Park School. She is now due to start college in Stroud this month.Tocelebrate her last day, she cooked herself a margherita pizza in the wood-fired oven and had a glass of her favourite squash. Kelesie said: “Working at B Block is fun. I like making pizzas best. I like making coffee, but not drinking it! The residents are “I’dnice.like to come back to drink squash and have a pizza. Thank you so much for having me.” B Block front-of-house supervisor Courtney Bryant said: “The residents and customers love her. They have seen how she’s gone from standing at the bar looking worried when she first started, to confidently taking their orders and serving them their meals and drinks.”

In Bloom have been busy trying to keep the containers in our town hydrated during the Theheatwave.PocketPark plants have had a haircut after judging on July 21, and we have lost several plants from the flowerbeds at Keynsham Station, so KIB are appealing to gardeners in our community for help. If you happen to be dividing any plants or bulbs that have become overgrown and they need a new place to call home, please contact me or Dawn Drury (at the email addresses below) and we will be happy to adopt your babies. I am always available to collect new plants, so just drop me a line. It seems as though we are going to rethink what plants thrive in very hot conditions when we replant this autumn. In my own garden, shrub salvias, verbenas, lavenders, herbs and hardy geraniums seem very happy, even though the soil is like cement. Mother Nature certainly keeps us on our toes! Comments have been made about our missing black containers from the High Street. Please do not worry as these will be reinstated shortly. They were removed for access purposes to allow the cycle lane to be resurfaced. I do miss their cheerful and bright faces. The last of the Platinum Jubilee decorations have also been removed, cleaned and stored away. The Knitting for Her Majesty girls did a wonderful job. Should any readers like to be involved in KIB as a volunteer, and perhaps have a say at our committee meetings, please contact Dawn Drury at keynshaminbloom@icloud.com or myself at catherinemarywoodman@gmail.com. We dig, weed, plant, deadhead, water, discuss planting schemes, have the occasional coffee and put the world to rights, all in a lovely setting. If this sounds interesting, either email us or drop your contact information into Keynsham Town Council in Temple Street. I popped into the Pocket Park and took this photo of a very dry flowerbed and grass, showing that action needs to be taken in the future. Well, after the recent rainfall and although the ground is still hard, I need to tidy up my garden before supper. Or l may just enjoy a glass of cold white wine sitting on the bench. Wine sounds better. Keep well and keep gardening. Mary Woodman

BY the time your readers see this, HSBC will have left Keynsham after about 50 years in the town. I personally do not think this a great loss. The much greater loss, in my view, occurred when the buildings in the photograph were demolished in the 1960s to become what were the buildings that housed HSBC. What a wonderful extension they would have been to the Station Road Conservation Area, probably now listed too, had they survived. The perspective of the photograph, judging by the man on the bicycle, appears to be downwards, suggesting the photo was taken from an upper floor, maybe from where Smart Computers now is. You will note, left foreground, the right side of Keynsham Victoria Methodist Church. It is not difficult to imagine the dilemma of the then planning authority, Keynsham Urban District Council. Charlton Road is clearly still not much more than a country lane at this point, unfit for modern traffic. Widening the road would have been essential to a growing town at this point, with the only alternative demolishing the church. Such decisions were probably faced the length and breadth of Britain where roads had to be widened.Iamunable to credit the photographer, but the photo may come from the Russell Leitch collection. Thanks to Keynsham Library, who supplied it to me via Dave Bees. Lionel Hutt Wrong turn So now BANES have the power to enforce traffic restrictions, no doubt another ‘cash cow’. The fact that the ‘High Street/ Bath Hill/Temple Street, Keynsham - banned right turn’ leads to the dangerous use of the Back Lane/ Bath Hill junction as an unofficial roundabout is, no doubt, irrelevant. I believe that an analysis of the consultations will show that most people thought that the right turn into Temple Street should

FORTY-four years ago, someone had the idea to raise funds for Keynsham Scout Group from an auction. That first auction and book sale took place in 1978 at Keynsham Scout HQ, in the centre of the town behind Ashton Way car park. Hundreds packed the then much smaller HQ on a Friday evening, and the selling finished just afterThemidnight.following year it moved to a Saturday morning and until 2020 took place on the Saturday after Remembrance, raising thousands of pounds to help to keep Keynsham Scouts as one of the most successful groups in the UK. It even helped pay for a bigger building. Many people stay at the auction all day. Even children can bid (with parental control). It’s a place to pick up bargains, find an item to recycle, furnish a property, and above all have some fun. Not everything is auctioned - the book room, toy and games tent, and bargain marquee will let you haggle or pay a fixed price. Sue White, this year’s auction organiser, is delighted that 2022 will see the return of the event, this time on the earlier date of Saturday October 1. Doors open at 9am for viewing and the auctioneers start at 9.30am. Sue said: “Already, offers of items are arriving and we hope after the pandemic gap that 2022 will prove to be a huge success. It feels like 1978 all over again. Please spread the word and let’s see you on the day.” For those who wish to donate items, they can be dropped off at the Scout HQ in the week before the event. Please visit our website www.1stkeynhamscouts.org.uk or contact Auction@1stkeynshamscouts.org.uk for details of what we can accept, as well as arranging possible collections in BS31 postcode area. l Every month we love to report on the adventures of our young people - it is because of events such as the auction that we can do so much. “No words can describe how immensely proud it was to watch my son play for Great Britain in a sport he is so passionate about since a young age. “Since joining Team GB, he has put in so much dedication, time and endurance, along with travelling from Keynsham to Slough most weekends for training over the last 10 months that it was great seeing all the hard work pay off in Valencia.”

Tom was able to make the trip to Spain thanks to a crowding campaign, run by Bristol Baseball Club, that also supported two players in the Team GB women’s team.

Tom’s mum Sharly flew out to Valencia to see three of the six games, and said: “They played brilliantly.

Tom lived in Washington DC from the ages of seven to 12. Sharly said: “That is where he found the love and passion for baseball and attended the local baseball club. “He supports the Washington Nationals baseball team, who are in the Major League. “On returning from the USA, he was lucky to have a baseball team on his doorstep - the Brunels at Somerdale.”

Tom’s ambition is to gain a university or college baseball scholarship in the USA.

Tom MacLennan played for Team GB

Tom, aged 15, who attends Wellsway School, said: “Playing for Great Britain in Valencia has been one of my most rewarding achievements yet. “I don’t think I will be able to forget how very hot it was, as we were playing in the middle of the day, but the heat didn’t stop us from reaching the final!”

Tom, aged 15, plays for Bristol Brunels, one of the teams run by Bristol Baseball Club, which is based at the Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham. Sharly said: “Tom plays first base for GB, but when playing with the Brunels, not only does he play first base he sometimes plays catcher or out on the field.”

Dewi was a student at Wellsway School and more recently at Millfield School, where he secured a golf scholarship. Dewi has now accepted a golf scholarship at Charleston Southern University in South Carolina and is due to begin his studies there this month. While he was at Wellsway, it was apparent that Dewi was a talented all-round sportsman, representing the school in a variety of sports, as well as being involved in numerous leadership activities, acting as an exceptional role model to younger pupils. Dave Phillips, junior organiser at the golf club, nominated Dewi for the award, referring to him as “the model junior both in ability and personality.”

I imagine a walk down a bright leafy lane, White sand on a beach, a swim in the seaA garden with birdsong, the patter of rain. Yes, here in my chair My joys never cease. Here I find happiness, Here, I find PEACE.

It’s a time when I close my eyes and just dream.

Dave summarised Dewi’s many achievements over the nine years he has been a member of the club and most recently as junior captain. Dewi was one of the team of three juniors who won the England Golf Junior Champion Club title for Saltford at Woodhall Spa in 2019, and in 2020 he won the Saltford club championship, the junior championships and the club scratch match-play competition.

At the presentation, Lou Riddoch (Keynsham & Saltford Sports Network) highlighted the criteria for the award and recognised the similarities between Jack’s and Dewi’s qualities. Furthermore, as June and Dave are both active members of the golf club, it was a great opportunity to acknowledge the huge amount of fundraising they have done for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) over the 13 years since Jack passedHugeaway.numbers of young people in the community have engaged in the cardiac screening programme funded by CRY and ensures that these young people are protected against undiagnosed heart conditions.

Outstanding role model Dewi honoured Alarge group of Saltford Golf Club members gathered to see a club member and outstanding role model being presented with the Jack Boulton Award. The event took place at the club in the presence of June and Dave Boulton, along with the recipient’s close family. After Jack sadly died in August 2009, the Keynsham and Saltford Sports Network decided to make an award each year to a young sportsman or woman in the community who displayed many of Jack’s exceptional sporting and personal qualities. This year, the award goes to Dewi John, a young man who reflects Jack’s huge talent but also his quiet disposition and modest manner.

To relax, I recline in my favourite chair Spending time with my innermost thoughts. Wide open window, breathing fresh air And pretending I haven’t a care. My mind wanders far, and I relish the moment Of quiet, of solitude - planning tomorrow. Thoughts I don’t often allow myself Knowing the world is full of such sorrow.

‘Share the path’ appeal

SIGNS have been put up along the railway path through Saltford asking people to be considerate of otherSaltfordusers.Parish Council (SPC) had expressed safety concerns about congestion on the path, especially during good weather. So it contacted Sustrans, the organisation that is the custodian of the National Cycle Network, which includes the Bristol and Bath Railway Path. In response, Sustrans said it would put up temporary ‘Share the Path’ signs as seen on other sections of the path. After receiving permission from Bath and North East Somerset Council, the parish council then suggested locations to Sustrans where the signs could be erected - options being limited due to the minimal number of posts and fences on the Saltford stretch. The signs are now in place, and the parish council said it was grateful to Sustrans volunteers for giving their time to the project. The parish council has now contacted the Avon Frome Partnership - a collaboration between the three local authorities, including B&NES Council, that the railway path falls within - which are working towards a consistent signage strategy for the whole path.

CAM Valley Arts Trail celebrates its 10th year in November. To mark the occasion, it launched a competition to create a new blackbird logo. Organisers were thrilled with the entries – which included etchings, glasswork, paintings and digital art - and they have found a worthy winner.Karen, chair of the group, said: “One of our members, Lucy Empson, has created a stunning blackbird. Lucy is a calligrapher, but there is clearly no end to her creative talents.”Lucy’s blackbird will be seen on signage for the trail weekend and the new trail brochure, which will be available soon. The Cam Valley Arts Trail will take place on Saturday and Sunday November 5 and 6, hosting more than 40 local artists across 14 venues. More information can be found at camvalleyartstrail.co.ukwww.

Wildfires are raging across the continent. The UK has not escaped. Our gardens and fields are brown, trees are dropping their leaves in stress, ponds, rivers and streams are drying up. Firefighters are tackling an unprecedented number of fires. This is unlikely to be a one-off. Scientists predict we’ll see more droughts due to human-induced climatePrivatisedchange.water companies are under fire for serious lack of investment in our water infrastructure, presiding over reckless levels of water leaks and poisoning our water courses. It’s clear their priority lies with providing profits to their shareholders rather than as responsible custodians of our preciousWaterresource.shouldbe a common good. In my view, it must be taken back into public ownership. No private company should have the right to ‘own’ a resource taken from nature that we all need to thrive. I hope this will be a key issue in the next general election, and I’ll be putting my cross next to the political party that has a solid plan to tackle the problem. In the meantime – as usual – it’s up to citizens to respond to the crisis. What can we do at home to conserve water? Irrigate our gardens with grey water from the bath or washing up bowl. Let our lawns go brown. Get free water-saving devices from Bristol Water. Turn the tap off when we’re cleaning our teeth or washing our hands. Check for leaking loos. Whilst it’s not fair that citizens have to suffer the consequences of private greed, it’s the only thing we can do until we get a chance to show our discontent at the ballot box. In the meantime, we could write to our parliamentary representatives and the CEOs of the water companies and express our anger at the egregious mishandling of this most precious resource.

TENNIS CLUB

Flags fly for contestcounty

FOR some months, the flag of Ukraine has been flying alongside the club flag at Keynsham Bowling Club as a mark of support for those suffering in Ukraine. On the middle Wednesday of August, two additional flags were on display, those of the Somerset and Berkshire county bowling associations, as the local club hosted a men’s county fixture. Before the game started, the green had to be “handed over” by the president of Keynsham to the county president, and our photograph shows the two teams gathering to watch this happening.

FOLLOWING the success of its teams in the summer league season, Saltford Lawn Tennis Club held a further double celebration - the official opening of the new clubhouse and the award by Avon Tennis for ‘Club of the Year’.

The match was keenly contested, with each county winning three rinks, but Somerset came out on top 111-108. Ladies’ and men’s county matches are a regular feature of the bowling season in Keynsham, a reflection on the high standard to which the green is maintained. On the previous Sunday, the club hosted its annual barbecue to raise funds for the captain’s charity, Dorothy House Hospice. Due to the high temperatures, burgers were cooked beforehand at members’ homes. More than 80 people attended, to be entertained by the Panama Jazz Quartet, and nearly £500 was raised. Club representatives attended Keynsham Town Council’s grants presentation. We were greatly appreciative to receive £1,000 towards the canopy extension to the front of our clubhouse.

The opening of the new clubhouse was the culmination of a long project aimed at securing and improving the club’s future.

The reduced-cost membership deals, and the ease of booking low-cost tennis for nonmembers via the club website, were important factors, but the commitment to encouraging everyone of all ages, and from total beginners to experienced players, to just have fun in a relaxed atmosphere was also key.

September, 202240 keynshamvoice

The ‘Club of the Year’ award recognised achievements on and off the courts, not just in completing the asset transfer and building the clubhouse amid the difficulties of the pandemic, but in significantly increasing membership and the number of non-members playing tennis.

Our ladies progressed well in the Fear Cup, beating Paulton at home and Bath away before losing at home in the quarter final to Purnells.Thefollowing day they were away to Purnells in the county league, where they triumphed on the last shot of the game. At present the ladies are top of the Mendip league and third in the North Somerset league. Our green is well used at present by members battling it out in the various club competitions for a place in the finals, which will be played over the weekend of September 10 and 11.

In the men’s cup competitions, Keynsham lost at home in the third round of the Lloyds Trophy, going down to Olveston 31-48. In the Wedmore Plate, we went out in the fourth round, losing at home to Frome Park 60-78. One men’s fixture that is always eagerly anticipated is the annual Alsop Cup match against local rivals Frys. This year it was played on Frys’ green, with both sides winning on three rinks but Keynsham came out on top 78-73. At the time of writing, the men’s A team are top of Division 2 in the Thursday Bristol and District League, whilst the B Team are joint top of Division 4.

The club has a full coaching programme, and the new clubhouse provides facilities for disabled players – given the success and popularity of wheelchair tennis at events such as Wimbledon, the club hopes to encourage this in theThefuture.clubworks closely with Saltford Community Association and has strengthened its ties with Saltford Sports Club, the intention being to offer the best possible facilities to all in the community.

The celebration on Saturday July 16 included the opening ceremony and cream tea, and a quick tournament, followed by Pimms and prosecco hosted by the Sports Bar. The winners of the quick tournament were David Perryman and Derek Mclauchlan.

This started with the resurfacing of the courts five years ago, and was followed by the establishment of a ‘community asset transfer’ from Bath and North East Somerset Council, which provided the club with a long-term lease, further land and operational independence in return for a commitment to provide facilities for the wider community, not just members.

Assistant secretary Phil Blundell said: “This summer has been a hugely transitional period for the club. After a very successful time under John Allen and his staff, the club has had to undergo a massive overhaul on and off the pitch, as our chairman Ade Cole stepped down and this was followed by several committee members leaving.“The decision was made that we had to continue to field sides in both the Toolstation Western League and the Somerset County Premier Division. This then needed us to bring in a new coaching team, not to mention a large influx of new players in a matter of weeks. “As a club, we decided to go into partnership with Total Pro Soccer, whose aim is to develop and support talented young players.“We saw after the promotion season a few years back what a huge step-up from Division One to the Premier Division was, so this would always be a similar case this season. It’s fast, it’s physical and it’s unforgiving. Please remember this season is a learning curve for everyone.”Ksreserves have also had a difficult start to their Uhlsport Somerset County Premier Division campaign, suffering 3-2 and 1-0 defeats away to Mendip Broadwalk and at home to Nailsea United. Similarly, the Ks Ladies got off to a disappointing start, losing their opening League game 7-0 at Exeter City.

Challenging start but hopes for the future

KEYNSHAM TOWN TO say it has been a difficult start to the season for Keynsham Town’s young first team would be an understatement.Butalthough the first five games ended in defeat, with the management having to change several players every game due to availability, performances are improving and there are positives to focus on. The first two Toolstation Western League games resulted in a 5-0 loss away to Cadbury Heath and a 4-0 reverse at home to Sherborne Town. Next up was a now-customary long away trip for a cup game, as the Ks visited Flackwell Heath in Buckinghamshire. Although the scoreline was again 4-0, there were signs that the team was starting to gel. That FA Cup defeat gave the Ks an unfortunate English national FA Cup record – this was their 12th consecutive exit at the extra preliminary round stage, spread over the last 19 seasons. Indeed the last win in the competition was back in 1935-35 with a 3-2 victory over Kingswood. Let’s hope that this record is banished before its 100thBig-spendinganniversary!league leaders Bridgwater United were next up at Crown Fields, and unsurprisingly against a team assembled with a budget of zero, the visitors ran out 8-1 winners. Bridgwater’s subsequent away game three days later resulted in a 7-0 romp away to Street, so that put the Ks defeat into some perspective. The seemingly regular Saturday minibus trip then took the Ks off to North Devon to face Ilfracombe Town, and this saw a vastly improved performance from the youngsters. They fought back twice from a goal behind, with an excellent finish from Owen Brain and a debut goal by Sahr Nanoh, as well as hitting the Ilfracombe woodwork twice. But a harsh penalty was awarded against their excellent keeper Josey Casa-Grande (on loan for two matches from Bristol City) with 10 minutes to go (he had earlier saved a penalty in the first half), and a deserved point disappeared, with another goal at the death giving the home team a flattering 4-2 scoreline.

The following Tuesday saw Keynsham at last secure their first point of the season with a pulsating 2-2 draw at home to Welton Rovers. Again the Ks came from behind twice, but this time they had to play for 75 minutes with only 10 men. Owen Brain scored again just after the hour, before deep into stoppage time Jemar Thomas broke clear and finished clinically.

SHIP INN PETANQUE CLUB

The Ship Inn Petanque Club, now in its 25th year, held its annual ‘Ship Masters’ competition on Sunday August 14. A total of 16 teams from as far as Royal Wootton Bassett and Gotherington (north of Cheltenham) descended on Keynsham to battle for the Bristol Blue Glass trophy. Team Grand Cru from Bath claimed the trophy for the fourth time. Runners-up were a the City of Bath Club. Two teams from our club reached the semi-finals. Held alongside the Masters was a competition for the best of the rest called ‘the Plate’. Victors representing The Wheatsheaf in Corston were Ed Gregory, Seb and Alex Church. Our picture shows Alan Hulme, president of our club, presenting the Masters trophy and Bristol Blue Glass wine goblets to Chris Garrett, Andy Briggs and Gary Lee. The Ship Inn Petanque Club has an open morning most fine Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm - Just turn up.

The Keynsham minibus rolled into Cornwall four days later with a visit to Saltash United. In a strange game, the Ks’ poor first-half display saw them go in at half time 4-0 down. But after two further goals for the home side not long after the restart, the Ks finally hit their stride and created a slew of chances, only to be thwarted by a magnificent display by Saltash’s keeper. Indeed Jemar Thomas alone could have equalled Saltash’s tally, before a late Amadou Jawo goal made the final score 6-1.

Thursday August 4: Canford hosted Frys, who jumped ahead early on rink 1 and 2, with a tight start on rink 3 soon broken by the visitors. Frys held a comfortable lead at halfway, but Canford mounted a comeback on rinks 1 and 3. Rink 2 continued their good form, ensuring Frys would take the overall win, taking seven points from the 52-43 victory.

Thursday July 28: Following a pointless 57-39 defeat at Avonvale ‘A’, Bradley Stoke visited Frys. After a close first half, Frys pulled away on rink 2. Frys took seven shots on the final three ends on rink 3, while rink 1 picked up three shots on their final two ends to draw. Frys took nine points from the 55-36 win. Scores: Rink 1, 14-14; Rink 2, 22-11; Rink 3, 19-11; Frys 55-36 Bradley Stoke. n

Scores: Rink 1, 11-17; Rink 2, 23-8; Rink 3, 18-18; Frys 52-43 Canford. n Thursday August 18: After another pointless 59-37 defeat at the hands of Ardagh, Frys made the short trip to Keynsham ‘A’ in a crucial penultimate game. Rink 3 went to Keynsham, and with Frys taking rink 1, it left rink 2 with a two-shot lead with two ends left. But a good connection from Frys ended up giving Keynsham a one-shot lead. Keynsham held the shots on the final end, and with Frys skip missing the trail for two, Keynsham took the 4138 win and eight points, ending Frys’ promotion hopes. The two points should see Frys remain in Division 2. Scores: Rink 1, 18-10; Rink 2, 10-18; Rink 3, 10-13; Frys 38-41 Keynsham ‘A’. n Cup matches: The City and County of Bristol BA Clarence Davey plate semi-final saw Frys host Congresbury. A strong second half from Congresbury saw them run out 95-57 winners. Despite a late comeback from Frys, a slow start cost them the Alsop Shield, with Keynsham winning 78-73. The Somerset BA Wedmore Plate proved more successful, starting at Frome Park. After a close start, Frys pulled away on rink 1, and steady games on rink 3 and 4 left rink 2 with a three-shot lead, with two bowls left in the game after a scoring mix-up. An insurance shot of the last bowl from Frys saw them advance with a 65-63 win. A quarter-final at home to Alexandra saw Alexandra lead at the halfway point, but a strong finish from Frys saw them win 76-68 and advance to the semi-final. The semi-final at Bloomfield saw Frys take on Congresbury. The hot weather reduced the game to 15 ends from the scheduled 21. A tight game on three rinks left scores close, but Congresbury dominated the fourth rink, easing Congresbury to a 62-42, despite the spirited effort from Frys.
