A YOUNG carer who spent seven years looking after his dying father is running 10k in aid of the charity that supported him. Ellis Bywater, 16, from Hanham, cared for dad Andy until his death on 9 May this year, just before his 55th birthday, following a long illness. During that time Ellis was supported by the Young Carers service from local charity Carers Support Centre and decided to train for the Great Bristol Run to give something back. He said: “Young Carers gave me and my family an amazing amount of support while I supported my dad. “Every penny will be going to a cause that I have greatly benefitted from for the past sevenHeyears.”hasalready smashed his fundraising target of £2,000 by collecting donations from friends and the wider community, including a £100 donation from Kingswood Rugby Football Club. Ellis said: “The run is being done in honour of my dad, who passed away in May 2022 after a long battle with physical and mental health issues.

The Young Carers service helps children aged between eight and 17 in South Gloucestershire, as well as children from age five in Bristol, by giving support, information and advice. According to the charity, there are 1,384 young carers aged five to 15 in South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Ellis can be sponsored at: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/ellis-bywater2

Charity run in memory of father

“Before I became a carer for him and before he physically could not do it anymore, he loved to run. He even ran the London Marathon twice, and somehow got his hands on a certificate that said he ran a half marathon an hour faster than he did which [would have] made him an Olympic“Now,qualifier!Iwishto continue his legacy and continue running in his footsteps. “In 2018, I ran the Warmley Forest Park 5k for Young Carers. Prior to beginning training [for the Great Bristol Run] I had not run in over three years, but after a year of training and taking up running as a hobby I am ready to take on my next challenge.

“I am absolutely amazed at how well this has done already and excited for what is to come. Dad would be so happy to see all the support given so far.” Ellis is being supported by his two sisters Ava, 13 and Aimee, 25, and mum Emily. It will be a big month for him, as he’s also hoping to start at St Brendan’s college in September.

Claudia began learning gymnastics aged six and came to prominence at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where she was the first English woman to win four gold medals since 1930. Nicknamed the Pocket Rocket because ot her small stature, Claudia went on to compete at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and also appeared on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, where she came fourth. Following the gold medal last month, she wrote on her social media page: “I did this for me. I wanted to make myself proud of me! To go through big challenges throughout the years and come back to the gymnastics stage was the best feeling in the world.

LONGWELL Green gymnast Claudia Fragapane helped England win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.Claudia,24, performed a floor routine that helped the team clinch gold in the women’s Artistic Gymnastics at Arena Birmingham.

“But it was Fragapane, a gymnast at the opposite end of her career, who brought the house down with a stirring floor routine that, whilst failing to land her a place in the individual final, proved a fitting send-off from her Commonwealth Games career.

Claudia, talking alongside team mate Kelly Simm, 27, said both of them would retire from the team before the next Commonwealth Games. She said: “This is definitely our last Commonwealth Games because we’re not going to go on for four more years. “I’ve had four major injuries so just to get back and do it again was my main goal. I shouldn’t have come back so quickly but I pushed myself to get here. “I’ll take it one step at a time. I’ve got to be careful with this fragile body now.”

Conham River Bathing Water group organised the petition to force the council to discuss lifting the ban. This would help the group apply for Designated Bathing Water Status (DBWS) for that part of the river Avon. This would mean that signs would be put up to update swimmers, paddle boarders and kayakers on the water quality. Raw sewage is regularly dumped in the river from the nearby sewer overflow, which puts people using the water at risk of illness.

Debate on swim ban

A PETITION signed by more than 5,000 people means Bristol City council will debate a ban on swimming at Conham River Park. Swimming is prohibited for safety reasons at the popular bathing and water sports spot opposite Beese’s cafe.

“We are now meeting with some of the councillors ahead of the discussion to explain the issues to them.

The council’s support is needed for the application, because it owns the land. It has refused until now because of the ban on swimming, but this could be amended as a result of the debate.

From Page 1 insufficient drainage. Some meeting attendees didn’t have internet access and said they couldn’t find out details of the plans as a result. Ms Warner said: “The scale of diagrams available online are so small people can not read them. The time frame to assess, digest, reflect and respond to these proposals is too short. Many residents are on holiday during this“Residentstime. have been subjected to months of noise from the drilling and compacting on the site and are deeply concerned about further disruption from building noise.”

• Good amenity facilities (such as paths, seating, waste bins, signage & interpretation)

The council allocated £500,000 earlier this year to boost biodiversity and nature recovery in the community whilEcelebrating HRH Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.

The council offered three options in the Cadbury Heath area –Warmley Pitch and Putt, Banjo Island and Tarzan Park.

Suggestions members of the public came up with at the meeting included the introduction of a residents’ parking scheme Homes England, the government’s housing delivery agency, has submitted an outline planning application to South Gloucestershire Council which has attracted nearly 100 comments. Work on the brownfield site off Anstey Road has begun, with old warehouses being removed and the ground being levelled. Building work on housing is expected to commence next summer. Up to 200 homes are planned for the site, with a mix of flats and houses. Up to 70 of those will be affordable housing, making up 35% of properties. Plans follow an “Urban Lifestyles” design, which encourages people to walk, cycle and use public transport instead of own a car. Hanham & Longwell Green Voice contacted the developers regarding the concerns raised at the residents’ meeting but had not received a response when we went to print.

A BOY from Longwell Green has cycled all the way to London during the heatwave to raise funds for birds. Elijah Buscemi, 12, spent years trying to talk his parents into letting him attempt the 250k journey. They finally relented on the condition that they could join him on the epic challenge.

Community gets life-saving device

A DEFIBRILLATOR has been installed at St Anne’s church hall in Oldland Common following fundraising efforts by groups using the hall. The campaign was inspired when Danish footballer Christian Eriksen was saved with a defibrillator after collapsing during the Euros in 2020. Because there was no defibrillator locally that was accessible around the clock, the hall’s management and users agreed to arrange for one to be installed.Groups including Phoenix judo club, the Scouts, St Anne’s church, Bitton Parish Council, NatWest and the Mothers' Union raised more than £650 through a series of events and donations. However, a shortage of defibrillators following the pandemic meant it took longer to source one than planned. Hall manager Terry Scull said a story in Hanham & Longwell Green Voice about Parkwall primary school having a defibrillator installed led to a breakthrough. He said: “They had had their defibrillator provided by Jay’s Aim so we got in touch with the charity.“They said they needed a donation in order to provide it, and we were able to do that using the funds we’d raised. He was surprised how much we were able to “Wedonate.thenhad to pay an electrician to install it, but it took less time than he expected so he donated £200 as well.

James Wilson, 33 of Albert Road, Hanham, was found guilty by a jury of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm at Bristol Crown Court on Monday 22 August.Hewas also convicted of assaulting an emergency worker, driving while unfit through drink or drugs, failing to provide a specimen of breath and driving without insurance.

Man jailed for 7 years Hackers strike

On December 22 last year, police were called at about 5pm after a black BMW crashed into parked cars on Lulworth Crescent, in Emersons Green, with Wilson seen exiting the driver's side door. PC Luke Watson attended shortly after and found Wilson at the scene, claiming he 'found his car like that'. He was placed in the back of the police car awaiting a breathalyser test. In an attempt to escape, the offender attempted to gouge PC Watson's eye, but luckily officers arrived in time to pull Wilson off their colleague. In the process, PC Craig Waters was also spat at. Wilson then refused to give a sample when he was taken into custody. He was handed a prison sentence of seven years and four months after his actions led to PC Watson being signed off work for more than two weeks with severe swelling and bruising around his right eye. Investigating officer PC Alex Higham, said: "The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and how seriously the courts take these matters. Violence against anyone will not be tolerated, especially emergency workers who are there to protect and serve the public. PC Watson was very lucky not to lose his eye or sustain any permanent damage, which could have been the case if not for the intervention of his two colleagues."

A HOUSING association in South Gloucestershire had to take its computer systems offline after a cyber attack. Hackers tried to access Bromford's systems on July 20. The association has around 100,000 residents in 40,000 homes across England, about 8,000 of which are in South Gloucestershire.

A spokesman said: “We take our cyber security seriously and are constantly monitoring and updating our systems to protect ourselves and our schools from malicious cyber-attacks. We share information between partners regarding potential threats and have implemented additional phishing countermeasures and monitoring protocols after a recent, external attack was reported.”

"Since then, we have been working closely with our specialist data security partners and have found no evidence that any data has been accessed or that the attempts were successful. Our neighbourhood coaches, income colleagues and support workers remained available for customers. Taking the step of isolating ourselves while we investigated the incident regrettably caused some disruption to our services but by re-opening our systems in a safe manner we have been able to return to our normal ways of working for most services.

Chief information officer Dan Goodall said: "Following a malicious attempt to access our systems we have now returned most of our services to normal. Immediately after identifying the attempt, we took all our systems offline in order to protect ourselves and our customers’ data.

YOUNGSTERS at three local primary schools have celebrated their ‘graduation’ after successfully completing extracurricular activities.

Cllr Brenda Langley at the Christ Church Primary, Hanham, ceremony

Hanham Abbots parish councillor Brenda Langley attended the graduation ceremony at Christ Church, where she presented the certificates.

The graduation ceremony at Our Lady of Lourdes was attended by the chair of South Gloucestershire council, Sanjay Shambhu. Headteacher Rita McLoughlin said: “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate all of the graduates of Children’s University.

Alexandra Thiessen from the Children’s University said: “This has been our biggest year yet with almost 800 pupils graduating across South Gloucestershire and we want to say a massive thank you to the council for its support and to the councillors who helped us mark this fantastic year. “These graduations recognise the active participation these children have had in education and, more importantly, beyond school and it is great to see these investments being made in their future.”

“They have worked incredibly hard over the last year to clock up so many hours of extracurricular experiences such as museum trips, school camps along with any other experiences they had outside of school hours. “They all looked amazing in their robes and mortarboards and everyone at the ceremony did the school and our community very proud. We sincerely hope that this local authority initiative will run again next year.” At Parkwall, all children who signed up for the challenge passed. They donned gowns and home-made hats for their graduation ceremony with ward councillor Sam Bromiley. A spokesperson said: “Hopefully, whichever career or education path our children choose, they are aware of the opportunities that are available to them. “For some, they may now be inspired to pursue education with UWE.”

I have always fought for investment locally during my time as the MP, including the £6m Linking

The Greens Project in Emersons Green and Lyde Green. I was particularly pleased to play my part in securing £25million investment that has kickstarted regeneration locally by purchasing the Kings Chase Shopping Centre, restoring the Whitfield Tabernacle into a new community space and pedestrianising part of Regent Street. This new Connecting Kingswood Project is the next phase of public investment, which will help unlock a new wave of private investment too.

AS your local MP, I am thrilled to be able to champion two new bids for our area – one for new regeneration funding and one to trial new noise camera

Local councillors and I are wanting to see the A4174 Ring Road included in this trial so we can better clamp down on drivers who flout noise laws. Police have existing powers, including the ability to issue fines, but currently have trouble gathering evidence.Ilookforward to championing both bids in Parliament over the coming months. This is a competitive bidding process, but if we are successful then this would improve everyday life for people across the Kingswood constituency.

Firstly, technology.SouthGloucestershire Council has formally submitted a £17 million regeneration bid to Government to provide better links from Kingswood Town Centre to local green spaces and heritage facilities. The “Connecting Kingswood Project” will deliver a new phase of the Kingswood Masterplan and builds on the unprecedented £25million investment vision for the town centre. It would see improved walking and cycling links through to the likes of Southey Playing Field, Magpie Bottom, Grimsbury Farm, The Bristol to Bath Railway Path, Avon Valley Woodlands and Kingswood Heritage Museum and Gardens. New physical routes will be created and existing ones improved, enhanced by planting, cycle hub facilities, resting spaces and a new community café in Southey Playing Fields. Our bid is being made to the £4.8 billion Levelling Up Fund, which was created by the Government to invest in infrastructure, boosting town centre regeneration, transport links, and local heritage.

£17m bid to open up green spaces

The second bid to be submitted by the council recently has been to take part in a government trial of new innovative noise cameras, which will provide evidence for police to take action against rowdy motorists, helping communities to enjoy peaceful public and residential spaces.

A mammoth task ANTIQUES are an auctioneer’s bread and butter – every day we inthethat100‘andefinitiontheisdecadestreasures‘antiques’encounterandfrompast.Whatanantique?Well,dictionarystatesitematleastyearsold,’andisgenerallyrulewefollowtheindustry.But these days the term is unofficially used in a much looser form and the can be used to describe anything suitably old. For example; the 1930s aren’t yet one hundred years away, but there are plenty of ‘1930s antiques’ around. Not factually correct, but nobody seems to be counting. I very often get asked what the oldest thing we’ve sold is – and to be quite honest, I don’t really recall anything specific. In an average working day I’ll encounter Victorian items, perhaps some Georgian items, and on occasion some Roman pottery or coins. One day last week a colleague was even showing me an Egyptian carved figure from 300BC, an item that is well over two thousand years old. Definitely an antique by definition! But, I now have an answer to the question – what is the oldest thing we’ve sold? A 100,000 year old Woolly Mammoth tooth! (Pictured above) Yes, one-hundred-thousand years old. I can’t even comprehend that length of time! Discovered in the collection of a deceased fossil collector, you would be hard pushed to distinguish it from a large rock or even a lump of old coal. But upon close inspection, one could make out the ridges of the tooth and even a section of the root that once held it in place in the Mammoth’s jaw. It sat there - a monument to our past, and definitely the oldest item we’ve ever had in our saleroom! What was this pre-historic relic worth? Well – age doesn’t always mean value, sadly, and this example sold for £120. Most fossils and relics tend to pass hands for fairly small amounts of money - usually bought as interesting pieces of history rather than something to use or give purpose to. But for £120, someone gets to say they have a Woolly Mammoth tooth on their mantel piece, and that certainly sounds like a good conversation starter to me!

“Kelesie is a very able young person, but is hindered by being shy and withdrawn. Since coming to B Block it’s amazing to see how she’s gained so much independence and confidence.”

Kelesie’s confidence boost from the work experience will stand her in good stead for success when she starts college in Stroud, including managing a bus journey there and back.

Supervisor Courtney, who has worked with Kelesie throughout her work placement, said: “The residents and customers love her.

Kelesie said: “Working at B Block is fun. I like making pizzas best. I like making coffee, but not drinking it.

Warmley Park school is for pupils with a range of learning difficulties or additional needs and the work experience programme is designed to prepare students for leaving school.

“They have seen how she’s gone from standing at the bar looking worried when she first started, to confidently taking their orders and serving their meals and drinks.”

For one day a week, she has been working at B Block pizzeria and Somer Dining, two on-site restaurants at the Chocolate Quarter retirement complex in Keynsham.

Work experience gives Kelesie a great boost in confidence

Kelesie, 19, wanted to get used to being around more people and reduce shyness ahead of starting college this month.

The school has worked with Bristol Bears Community Foundation and St Monica Trust, which runs the Chocolate Quarter retirement village, to set up its work experience programme, funded by charity The CiaO [correct] Foundation.

Over the five months, she has learned to set up the restaurants, put deliveries away, rotate stock, serve customers, clear tables and cook food.

“The residents are nice. It’s fun working with [supervisor] Courtney. Thank you so much for having me.”

Kelesie’s support assistant, Claire, said: “The work experience programme is all about building confidence, independence and social skills to prepare pupils for leaving school, possibly having a job or, like Kelesie, going to college.

HUMANS are the only mammals that can delay sleep, yet unsurprisingly, cost of living anxiety, global and ecological concerns, not forgetting the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions and lockdowns, have adversely affected people’s sleep. Up to a third of UK adults and children experience problems sleeping. Occasional episodes of insomnia (lack of sleep) may come and go without causing any serious problems, but it can last for months or even years for some people. Poor sleep can impact emotional, physical, and mental health – putting people at risk of serious medical conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Some simple lifestyle changes can make a difference in your sleep quality.

2) Create a restful sleeping environment – Making sure the bedroom is cool, dark and quiet can improve the quality of our sleep. Make sure the mattress is comfortable and supportive. Reduce electronic use before bedtime, avoiding using it in the bedroom. If you have a pet that sleeps in the room with you, consider moving it elsewhere if it often disturbs you at night.

3) Exercise – Moderate exercises such as swimming or walking can help relieve the tension built over the day. But make sure you do not do vigorous exercise, such as running or the gym, too close to bedtime, as it may keep you awake.4)Cut down on caffeine and do not go to bed full, hungry or thirsty — Caffeine in tea, coffee, energy drinks or colas, especially in the evening, will prevent you from falling asleep. Likewise, too much food or being hungry.

5) Do not smoke – Nicotine is a stimulant, so people who smoke take longer to fall asleep, wake up more frequently, and often have more disrupted sleep. Finally, if you cannot sleep, get up and do something you find relaxing until you feel sleepy again, then go back to bed. The Ellacombe Pharmacy team can help with self-care measures and short-term medicines to help with sleep difficulty, but if you or a child regularly find it difficult to get to or stay asleep, please speak with a GP.

We know people are feeling the pinch, and your council is working hard to help residents in managing their budgets. In addition to information on our website and links to other or ganisations who can offer help and advice, council officers have been getting out into communi ties to talk directly to residents about all the ways that we are providing assistance.

With Ben Burton, cabinet member for corporate resources

In South Gloucestershire, 44 per cent of waste in the average black bin could be recycled at home, and we are keen to reduce that figure! Practical, useful advice and tips to save money, access support available and get better at recycling can be found on our dedicated webpages: port-for-residentssouthglos.gov.uk/financial-supbeta. and southglos.gov.uk/food-waste.beta.

In the summer we held a series of pop-up events at shopping centres in Thornbury, Bradley Stoke, Kingswood and Yate, with our financial support team providing a wealth of help ful information and discussing the support on offer. But while the roadshows have come to an end, we are still keen to help residents find out about potential ways to reduce costs and provide answers to the questions we hear from people asking for help, whether it is on how to apply for funding or extra support, concerns over eligibility or whether the sup port is right for you. As well as this, there is a great deal of information out there about various council initiatives, such as the Commu nity Resilience Fund, Household Support Fund, as well as Council Tax rebates and guidance on Universal Credit. You can find more informa tion on these specific measures at the bottom of this column. The roadshows also helped people understand more about how they can cut down on the amount of food waste from their home and how to recycle more, with some fantastic tips to not only reduce waste but save money at the same time.

Warmley Wheelers offers nearly 3,000 ride opportunities a year, and remains open yearround with half-day opening for two months during the winter. Even during the pandemic it was able to reopen swiftly because of its importance in giving people with supported needs access to their permitted one-hour daily exercise. Standard cycle hire is £5 an hour, with battery-powered bikes costing £10 an hour. South Gloucestershire Council has allocated nearly £29,000 from its annual area wide grant pot of £70,000.

A SCHEME that helps everyone get on their bike is celebrating after being awarded £2,300 council

Warmleyfunding.Wheelers rents specialist bikes to adults and children with health conditions or supported needs. This includes bikes that can carry a wheelchair and side-byside bikes so people can ride with theirSituatedcarer. next to Warmley Waiting Room cafe, cyclists can use a safe trail within Warmley Forest Park or head straight onto the Bristol to Bath cycle path.

“Our cyclists often use the cafe afterwards, and the cycle path is used by everybody so there is natural social integration.”

Council grant offers wheels of fortune

Project coordinator Andy Underwood said the area wide grant would be used for trail repair, maintenance and marketing. He said: “Where we differ from other inclusive cycle centres, which are mainly on athletics tracks, is we are integrated with the community.

Voluntary groups and community initiatives are invited to submit a bid for funding. Other local groups that have been successful in bidding for funding in the first round for 2022 include Willsbridge Mill, £1,400, Kingswood Community Transport, £3,000, Avon Valley Railway, £3,000 and Warmley community centre, £3,000. Parkwall and Warmley ward councillor Sam Bromiley said: “The Warmley Wheelers are a fantastic local initiative that not only help more people get active but also encourages sustainable transport.”

again open for applications. A partnership between my office, Somerset Community Foundation and Quartet Community Foundation, the fund aims to support community projects and activities across the force area that help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. Interested groups can apply for a grant of up to £5,000 until Friday September 30, with more details on my website. In the last round of funding, the Commissioner’s Crime Prevention Fund was able to support 18 brilliant local organisations, including children and youth charities such as Escapeline, Ignite Life and Youth Connect South West, as well as organisations like Opoka that support Polish women and girls with lived experiences of domestic abuse. I know these groups will find the additional funding really beneficial in supporting their work, which prevents crime in our organisationscommunitycommunities.Iactivelyencouragegroupsandtoapplyfor grants, as we want to support as many initiatives as possible.

August saw our annual summer trip. This year we went to the Forest of Dean – a trip which was originally scheduled to happen in 2019 but because of the events of the last two years it was postponed until now. The wait was well worth it. We took the scenic route to Coleford via the Wye Valley where we had lunch at the luxurious Speech House Hotel. This was built in 1669 as a hunting lodge by King Charles 11 and has seen many royal and other famous guests over the Theyears.owner of the hotel gave us a talk on the history of the building. He told us that to this day it still houses the Verderers Court. Verderers are Forestry officials and are elected by people of the Forest of Dean to administer the forest. The court had the power hear cases and sentence offenders. But now the court sits four times a year to discuss matters concerning the forest and their duties are mainly to advise various government bodies on how to manage the forest. Following the talk, we had lunch in the court room. After lunch we went to the Forest of Dean railway for a train trip. Unfortunately, because of the dry conditions the steam trains were not running but we still had an enjoyable trip followed by a tour of the museum. This of course gave us the opportunity to have a cup of tea and piece of cake before returning home.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service said the hot, dry weather saw the overall number of calls in the week from August 8 to 14 reach 1,306 - 658 more than in the previous week. Firefighters had to deal with more than three times as many grass fires during the heatwave as they did during the same period last year. MANY of us will be feeling refreshed from a summer break, perhaps far from home or maybe from a staycation, enjoying everything our amazing West of England has to offer. But now it’s back to work, which is where, astonishingly, we spend a whopping third of our lives. What that tells me is that having a decent job really matters. We’ve all done jobs that aren’t great. I was never a fan of 6am shifts at a factory job I did; nor of the particles of rust that irritated my eyes as a young scaffolder’s assistant; and there have been a few bosses that I met that would give fictional boss David Brent a run for his money. But equally, you remember those fantastic men tors in your career, the people that made time to invest in you, and where you felt every day was worthwhile. So,because we spend 90,000 hours at work over a lifetime, I am determined to try and make sure those hours are the very best they can be. That’s why, as part of my push for decent jobs, I have launched my Good Employment Charter, fulfilling a manifesto pledge I gave to you in the Metro Mayor election last year. The charter is a co-operative effort between employers, employees and trade unions.

It’s also about making sure people stay healthy.

The tests are about secure work, where peo ple know when the next shift is coming; paying a real living wage; making sure workers are listened to and can get training and promotions.

First to sign up were Wallace and Gromit’s creators, Aardman, the world famous, four-time Oscar-winning animation studio. They’re being joined by businesses and organisations big and small from across the West of England. Why? Because happy and healthy staff are also productive staff and mean a successful business. It’s a win-win for employees and employers. But,sadly, across our region there remains a less good side, with too many jobs not offering workers the respect, security, wages or future prospects they deserve, and their hard work and effortsShockinglymerit. today, one in six West of England workers take home less pay than the Real Living Wage and a record one in six families live in poverty.Inflation has hit a 40-year high, even as wages fall at their fastest rate in two decades. Plus, too many people don’t know what hours they will work and so what salary they’ll earn from week to week, as they languish on zero hours contracts when they would rather have certainty.Every company that signs up to the charter receives bespoke training organised by the West of England Combined Authority that I lead. I’m proud the West of England Good Employment Charter is making a difference in something so central to our lives.

There are two tiers: “supporters” - working with aspiring organisations to help them raise employment standards – and “members”, where employers prove they are exemplars.

On the previous Sunday, the club hosted its annual barbecue to raise funds for the captain’s charity, Dorothy House Hospice. Due to the high temperatures, it was considered inappropriate to fire the barbecues, so burgers were cooked beforehand at members’ homes. More than 80 people attended, to be entertained by the Panama Jazz Quartet, and nearly £500 was raised. Club representatives attended Keynsham Town Council’s annual presentation evening, when organisations received grants for their contribution to the local community. We were greatly appreciative to receive £1,000 towards the canopy extension to the front of our clubhouse.Inthemen’s cup competitions, Keynsham lost at home in the third round of the Lloyds Trophy, going down to Olveston 31-48. In the Wedmore Plate, we were eliminated in the fourth round, losing at home to Frome Park 60-78.One men’s fixture that is always eagerly anticipated is the annual Alsop Cup match against local rivals Frys. This year it was played on Frys’ green, with both sides winning on three rinks but Keynsham coming out on top 78-73. At the time of writing, the men’s A team are top of Division 2 in the Thursday Bristol and District League, whilst the B Team are joint top of Division 4. Our ladies progressed well in the Fear Cup, beating Paulton at home and Bath away before losing at home in the quarter final to Purnells. The following day they were away to Purnells in the county league, where they triumphed on the last shot of the game. At present the ladies are top of the Mendip league and third in the North Somerset league. Our green is well used at present by members battling it out in the various club competitions for a place in the finals, which will be played over the weekend of September 10 and 11. Mike Barrow

KEYNSHAM BOWLING CLUB FOR some months, the flag of Ukraine has been flying alongside the club flag at Keynsham Bowling Club as a mark of support for those suffering in Ukraine. On the middle Wednesday of August, two additional flags were on display, those of the Somerset and Berkshire county bowling associations, as the local club hosted a men’s countyBeforefixture.thegame started, the green had to be “handed over” by the president of Keynsham to the county president, and our photograph shows the two teams gathering to watch this happening.Thematch was keenly contested, with each county winning three rinks, but Somerset came out on top 111-108. Ladies’ and men’s county matches are a regular feature of the bowling season in Keynsham, a reflection on the high standard to which the green is maintained.

Thursday 18th August: After another pointless 59-37 defeat at the hands of Ardagh, Frys made the short trip to Keynsham 'A' in a crucial penultimate game. Keynsham got the best of the early ends, but rink would help keep Frys in the game. Keynsham held the lead at the halfway point, but Frys had been able to keep in touch, with rinks 2 and 3 mostly keeping Keynsham's counts down, and would start to close the gap. A few strong ends saw Frys eventually take the lead. Rink 3 went to Keynsham and with Frys taking rink 1, it left rink 2 with a 2 shot lead with 2 ends left. Keynsham got a small break as a good connection from Frys ended up giving Keynsham three shots and a 1 shot lead. Keynsham held the shots on the final end, and with Frys skip missing the trail for 2, Keynsham would take the 41-38 shot win and 8 points. The 2 points should see Frys remain in Division 2. Scores: Rink 1: 18-10; Rink 2: 10-18; Rink 3: 10-13; Frys 38-41 Keynsham 'A'. Cup matches: The City and County of Bristol BA Clarence Davey plate semifinal saw Frys host Congresbury. A strong second half from Congresbury saw them run out 95-57 Despitewinners.alatecomeback from Frys, a slow start would ultimately cost them the Alsop Shield with Keynsham winning 78-73.

The Somerset BA Wedmore Plate proved more successful which started with a game at Frome Park. A close start saw both team have rinks pull away, which would leave the game close at halfway. Frys pulled away on rink 1and steady games on rink 3 and 4 left rink 2 a 3 shot lead with two bowls left in the game after a scoring mix up. An insurance shot of the last bowl from Frys saw them advance with a 65-63 win. A quarter-final meeting at home to Alexandra saw Alexandra lead at the halfway point, but a strong finish from Frys saw them take the lead and hold on to win 76-68 and advance to the semi-final. The semi-final took place at Bloomfield which saw Frys take on Congresbury. The hot weather reduced the game to 15 ends from the scheduled 21. A close game on 3 rinks left scores close, but Congresbury dominated the fourth rink easing Congresbury to a 62-42, despite the spirited effort from ContactFrys.our secretary, Christopher Day, on 01225 872959,

Thursday 4th August: Canford hosted Frys on a sunny Thursday evening which saw Frys jump ahead early on all rink 1 and 2, with a tight start on rink 3 soon broken by the visitors. Frys held a comfortable lead at the halfway point, but Canford would mount a comeback on rinks 1 and 3. Rink 2 continued their good form with some good shots ensuring Frys would take the overall win. Rink 1 only picked up 1 shot from the final 9 ends, but were able to minimise counts to stop Canford making overall progress. Meanwhile rink 3 took a 6 shot lead with 3 ends left, but Canford reduced that to 2 with one end left. A poor end left Frys in trouble, but with Frys final bowl just failing to move Canford's second bowl enough but stayed in the head, the rink was shared with Frys taking 7 points from the 52-43 win.
