Bus services 'unacceptable'

BUS services in Hanham and Longwell Green and across the West of England face big cuts in the autumn because of a shortage of drivers, cuts in government subsidies and a reduced number of passengers since the pandemic. A review of services is under way and the metro mayor, Dan Norris, has urged bus users to have their say at a series of meetings this month. Doug Claringbold, managing director of First, told a South Gloucestershire Council scrutiny

commission meeting last month: "The level of service that First has been delivering has not been acceptable because of the level of cancellations, largely driven by a shortage of trained bus drivers. "In October we need to have a timetable which is robust, so there will have to be some planned changes to bring us back into line where our resources meet the services we operate. We are not prepared to run a non-reliable service." Full story: Page 4

Heat hits traffic lights JULY’S extreme heat caused the traffic lights at the controversial “hamburger roundabout” on the ring road to fail. It is the latest safety concern at the through-about, which opened late last year. Moped rider Daniel Davies, 16, died in a collision with a car at Easter and residents have reported a number of accidents and near-misses there. A reader experienced the failed lights in the early hours of July 19. To turn right, he had to filter left then cross six traffic lanes. On his return he saw a driver go straight through at 70mph. “I couldn't really blame them as if they are not from around here then to them they are just continuing on a dual carriageway not knowing there are supposed to be lights. If it was a roundabout it wouldn't matter if there were lights or not.” The Voice contacted South Gloucestershire Council about the matter. A spokesperson said: “Highways Engineers from our StreetCare team worked to resolve an issue which caused the traffic signals to stop working at the A4174 through-about for periods on the 18 and 19 July. It was caused by the extreme and unprecedented temperatures that resulted in disruption across the country’s highway network. The lights are now operational, and we will be monitoring them closely to ensure the issue does not return.” The council has paused its plans for more through-abouts and is due to review them later this year. You can find more details of the proposals here: https://beta.southglos.gov.uk/ring-road-junctionimprovements A petition urging it to drop the plans has collected nearly 2,000 signatures: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/scrap-the-a4174ring-road-rejig Appeal for witnesses: Page 13

n NEWS EXPECTATIONS that KFC is behind plans to build a 24-hour drive-thru in Asda Longwell Green car park have been confirmed by the fast-food giant. In April, Hanham & Longwell Green Voice reported that clues in the planning application – including references to awards, ingredients and processes – suggested that the proposed drive-thru would house a KFC, despite the name being kept secret. Now the fried chicken restaurant has revealed its identity by responding to questions around the planning application. The response said: “For each KFC restaurant, on average the construction will provide around 140 direct construction jobs that comprise of 90 on-site roles and 50 off-site positions. “Once operational, the new restaurant will deliver around 30 new jobs (both full and part time.) “KFC recognises that around 65 per cent of its restaurant recruits are young adults and it will be their first job. New employees will be supported with ongoing training and commit to an ongoing, clear career path.” It said staff could study towards qualification such as NVQs and degrees. South Gloucestershire Council is yet to approve the plans to build the drive-thru in the far corner of the Asda car park, next to the ramp where supermarket traffic enters. Five trees and 41 parking spaces will be lost from the Asda car park. KFC customers dining on site will share the parking spaces with Asda customers.

Concerns raised over KFC plans for Asda car park To mitigate likely concerns about antisocial behaviour and litter, KFC has pledged to litter pick three times a day around the restaurant. Governors at Barrs Court primary school, which is opposite the proposed drivethru, have objected to the development because of safeguarding children, on-going rat issues, traffic and rates of childhood obesity. They wrote: “To build a fast-food restaurant so close to a school is irresponsible and will only add to these worrying statistics.” Oldland Parish Council is also against the plans, because of the appearance of the building, proximity to the school and Busy Bees nursery, delivery lorries making the Asda car park unsafe and predicted ant-social behaviour. Parish council clerk Claire Dolman wrote: “The location of the drive-thru entrance on the Asda car park entrance road will lead to significant congestion for those accessing the Asda car park when the inevitable tailbacks occur from the drivethru order point, especially at peak times.” In addition, more than 80 residents have fed back objections to the plans on the council’s website. One wrote: “Is a 24-hour,

fast-food outlet needed in a residential area? Why can’t it be situated in one of the retail parks? “I live 500 yards from Asda and fully sympathise with the residents of Craven Way if this crazy scheme goes ahead.” Another objector wrote: “Health is supposed to be at the top of everyone’s list. “KFC is not a healthy food. I believe some people say it stands for, ‘Killing fat children.’ “I am sure there are some council backhanders behind these developments. I need my sleep and so do my neighbours. I strongly disapprove of this development.” However, seven people have supported the application,

including one current KFC employee. She wrote: “They are a good company to work for and also having a branch close to home means I will be reducing my carbon footprint by being able to walk to work rather than drive my car to Hengrove every day. “KFC train their managers how to deal with any issues that potentially could arise. There will not be a lot of [parking] spaces taken up as most KFC staff will be in college and therefore not have a licence, and most will hopefully be local like me so will be able to walk to work.” South Gloucestershire Council hasn’t announced when a decision will be made on the planning application.

Warning of big autumn bus cuts BUS passengers are being warned that services face a second round of cuts in the autumn. The region's Metro Mayor Dan Norris said severe bus driver shortages, the withdrawal of government subsidies and a continued drop in the numbers using buses meant reductions were inevitable, He is urging people to take part in a review of services taking place over the summer. Mr Norris says he is keen to hear from people who use buses but, crucially, also from those who don’t as increasing passenger numbers is vital to increase fare income and to tackle the climate emergency. A series of meetings is taking place: Monday 1 August at Yate Parish Hall; Tuesday 2 August at Southdown Methodist Church; Wednesday 3 August at St Augustine’s Church, Whitchurch; Thursday 4 August at Brook Way Activity Centre, Brook Way, Bradley Stoke, BS32 9DA. You can also participate online: https://www. westofengland-ca.gov.uk/what-we-do/transport/bus/bigchoices-on-buses/ Mr Norris said: "I am sorry that people in South Gloucestershire will feel these cuts in October, when private bus companies withdraw their services on the less profitable routes. "My heart goes out to people who will lose buses which I know are so important for getting to work, seeing family and caring for others. When it comes to funding, I will always step in to save vital buses where I can, but there isn’t an unlimited pot of cash and even if there was, I can’t magic up drivers." A First West of England spokesperson said: “As a condition of transitional funding arrangements, bus operators must undertake full network reviews to assess the viability of all routes once funding ends in the autumn. “This is currently taking place in West of England but we must stress no decisions have been made and it would be inappropriate to comment on speculation at this stage. “Like all other bus operators in the UK, we must adapt our networks to match the post-pandemic demand for services." On July 6 First managing director Doug Claringbold told a South Gloucestershire Council scrutiny commission meeting: "The level of service that First has been delivering has not been acceptable because of the level of cancellations, largely driven by a shortage of trained bus drivers. "In October we need to have a timetable which is robust, so there will have to be some planned changes to bring us back into line where our resources meet the services we operate. “We are not prepared to run a non-reliable service."

Doctors blamed too-tight shoes or an allergy - but Emily had a brain tumour EMILY Noad is learning to walk, talk and play for the second time after surgery on a brain tumour caused a ‘factory reset.’ The four-year-old from Cadbury Heath was in a critical condition by the time the tumour was diagnosed in June last year. Before that, parents Kelly and Jamie said they had been told by GPs and A&E staff for months that Emily’s symptoms might be caused by wearing the wrong size shoes, a virus, or that cutting out milk or strawberries would fix the problem. The then three-year-old had begun bumping into door frames, falling over, suffering from headaches and vomiting. Kelly, 38, who worked as a childminder until Emily’s illness, said: “I’ve looked after many children and I know what it looks like when they have a bug. This was not like this at all. I looked up the symptoms online and she had the full list of symptoms for a brain tumour. “I was at my wits’ end and kept asking staff at RUH to do a scan but the nurse we saw was really patronising and said I shouldn’t have brought her to hospital in case it was Covid. I had to literally stamp my feet in the waiting room after Emily had been there for five hours to get them to agree to a scan.” A CT scan revealed that Emily had a brain tumour which was pushing her brain forward into her skull, causing the headaches, balance problems and dizziness

Emily in hospital and recovering with her brothers she’d been suffering. She had also developed hydrocephalus, a dangerous build-up of fluid in the brain. Kelly said: “As soon as they’d done the scan the nurse who’d been so dismissive started treating us differently. She rang me afterwards to apologise but I didn’t want to hear it.” Kelly was transferred by emergency ambulance to Bristol Children’s Hospital. An MRI scan confirmed the diagnosis but also that it hadn’t spread and was therefore operable. An initial five-hour operation relieved the immediate pressure on the brain, followed by a 14hour operation two days later to remove a tumour the size of an apricot. Emily was left with a lifelong brain shunt, which drains fluid from the brain to her stomach, as well as posterior fossa syndrome. Jamie, 46, a civil servant,

said: “It’s like a full ‘factory reset’ for the brain. Children have to learn to breathe again and how to swallow and some never manage it. We had to listen to Emily choking as she learned to swallow again. “When she woke up from the operation she said, ‘Mummy, Daddy, juice,’ and that was the only thing she said for months because her brain forgot how to speak. She had to start from scratch again.” While brothers Max, 13, and Joseph, 11, waited at home with grandparents, Kelly and Jamie were told that bacteria from the brain released during the surgery had caused Emily to develop bacterial meningitis too. Jamie said: “Emily’s told us since that she can remember that part. She was lying there, unable to move or speak, and she thought she was going to die but couldn’t tell us.” While Emily slowly got

better, Kelly spent five months living at the hospital, losing her work as a childminder because her clients needed to find other settings for their children. The long stay was made more endurable by play workers funded by the Grand Appeal, who also paid for Emily’s brothers to go on days out while their parents couldn’t be with them. Charity Young Lives vs Cancer, formerly CLIC Sargent, helped the family fill in forms for grants and benefits to go towards the cost of living in the hospital and being out of work. Jamie visited seven days a week until his daughter was discharged to recover at home, with help from physiotherapists, speech and language therapists and hydrotherapists. Next month she will start at Longwell Green primary school with full-time, one-toone support. As well as help with mobility and speech, she also needs to be monitored constantly in case the brain shunt fails and causes a lifethreatening build-up of fluid. Jamie said: “This sort of thing shouldn’t happen. We were due to go on holiday to Center Parcs and RUH said she was fine and we should carry on and go. The surgeon who operated on Emily said if we’d gone away, we probably wouldn’t have brought her back home alive. As it is we’ll always wonder whether she wouldn’t have got so ill if we’d been listened to when we first started taking her to the GP.”

Ofsted joy for The Meadows THE Meadows in Bitton is a happy and successful school – and that’s official! Ofsted inspectors have rated the village primary as Good in all areas of educational provision. The long-awaited judgement has been welcomed by Futura Learning Partnership, which took over the running of The Meadows after the school was placed in special measures in 2016. Inspections were halted during the pandemic. Chief executive Andrea Arlidge said: “The Ofsted visit confirmed what families, staff and governors have known for some years – The Meadows is a lovely school where children are nurtured, relationships are strong and expectations for behaviour and learning are high. “Congratulations to headteacher Joy Mounter and her team for creating the school this community deserves and continuing to strive for further success.” Two inspectors visited the 156-pupil school for two days in May and judged it to be Good for quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and early years provision. They reported: “Leaders have created a

happy and united school community. There is a strong sense of teamwork and cooperation throughout the school.” Other positive comments in the report included: • Leaders have high expectations of pupils’ work, attitudes and behaviour. Staff give pupils the help they need to succeed. Pupils work hard and are keen to do their best. • Pupils are happy and safe because everyone behaves well. Staff help them understand how to treat each other with respect. • Lessons are calm, positive and purposeful. • Pupils are well prepared socially and academically for secondary school. The inspectors highlighted the priority given to reading and said that rich language and high-quality texts formed the basis of an engaging and ambitious curriculum. Maths was said to be skilfully taught. The report noted that leaders worked hard to ensure pupils learn about race, culture and beliefs that are different from their own. The inspectors also praised the wide range of experiences and personal development opportunities for children, including afterschool clubs, visits and visitors. Mrs Mounter said: “We are proud and

pleased that Ofsted has recognised the qualities of our school: we know our families so well and we have created a culture of respect and positive behaviour that supports children in their learning and development. “We are already working on the next steps suggested by the inspectors – completing the review of our academic and personal development provision – to ensure that children continue to thrive and learn even more successfully. “My thanks go to our children, staff, families, governors, and Futura Learning Partnership for their support. Working together collaboratively and effectively benefits our whole community.” The Meadows has places available in all age groups. Email enquiries@ themeadowsprimaryschool.org.uk to book a tour

Heatwave heroes help with Pete’s puncture GOOD Samaritans sprang into action to help when a car broke down by the Blue Bowl during the heatwave. Pete Ashman, 50, from Kingswood, had sought shade at Willsbridge Mill with girlfriend Silvia on Sunday 17 July when temperatures hit 29 degrees. On the way back to the car they stocked up on frozen and chilled food at Aldi, before driving off towards home. Pete said: “As I pulled away from the side street we were parked in I heard a thump and thought I’d driven over a pebble. “By the time I was coming up towards the Blue Bowl there was a loud, grinding metal sound so I pulled over. The front tyre was completely flat. A screw had gone through it and punctured the inner tube.” Pete, a semi-professional musician, wasn’t able to fix it himself and was worried because he’d broken down on double-yellow lines. The RAC revealed it would take three to four hours before they could rescue them. However, the people of Hanham stepped in to help Pete get back on the road. A man living opposite where the car broke down

brought out a tyre inflator and offered Pete and Silvia some cold water. Another neighbour offered use of their toilet while they were stranded. A couple walking by stopped to help but were foiled by a fault with the locking wheel nut key. Pete said: “The woman was a mechanic and lay down on the pavement to get to the underside of the car. I felt really guilty that she was doing that for us and, although she couldn’t fix it, I was very grateful she tried.” Worried about the rapidly-warming groceries, Silvia headed home in a taxi with the shopping bags while Pete endured the glares from other drivers who thought he’d deliberately parked on the double yellows. He said: “All of a sudden a guy in a pickup truck pulled up behind me. “He was like Superman. He knew a way to get around the fault with the wheel tool and got the tyre off and changed in the blink of an eye. “He said he used to run a music studio so we chatted about music, because I play in a band with my brother. I barely had chance to

thank him before he was finished and headed off, and I was able to drive home.” Now Pete, whose band The Blush has played at Keynsham music festival, as well as supported Toyah and Jesus Jones, wants to thank the people who came to his rescue. He said: “It was an awful situation on a very hot day, but actually all these people came to help and sorted things out for us. “I want to extend my gratitude to them and hope that they see this and know what a difference their actions made to us.”

Call for change of heart over river swimming EFFORTS to inform wild swimmers about sewage dumps into the river at Conham River Park have been blocked – because swimming is banned there. Bristol City Council’s support would be needed for campaigners to apply for the area opposite Beese’s cafe to be granted Designated Bathing Water Status (DBWS.) This would mean that signs could be put up to update swimmers, paddle boarders and kayakers about the water quality. The nearby sewer overflow at Beechwood Avenue, Hanham, regularly pumps untreated waste into the river, particularly when there is heavy rain. This can put anyone using the river park at risk of illnesses such as E.coli. Conham River Bathing Water group formed last year to try to submit an application for DBWS but hit a snag when members realised they needed permission from landowner Bristol City Council. A council spokesperson said: “The stretch of river all the way up to Hanham Lock, including Conham River Park, is covered by our 2009 byelaws, under which swimming is prohibited and there is a right to navigation. “Entering the tidal River Avon presents a number of risks including cold water shock, boat strike, hazardous objects under the water, strong currents, and illness and

®

Enjoying the water at Conham River Park infection. “We are therefore unable to support the application for bathing water status at this time, which would encourage prohibited activity and carry significant risk from boats on the waterways.” Conham River Bathing Water group has now started a petition to the council, asking them to amend the byelaw to allow swimming so they can apply for DBWS. Group spokesperson Becca Blease, 32, said they had proved the popularity of the area by counting the number of people swimming, which had sometimes exceeded 50 people at once. They have also had 900 responses to a public questionnaire. She said: “This underscores what a precious resource this river spot is for many Bristolians and how deserving it is of our

commitments to enhance and protect its water quality. “Those of us who swim there regularly perhaps don’t need to be told how excellent it can be, but the crucial element is not knowing when the quality drops so drastically.” Water sampling on 18 occasions this year and last shows that sometimes the levels of E.coli in the water are more than nine times the safe limit for swimming. On other occasions, they are well within the limits. Ms Blease said: “I sincerely hope the council recognises how much public support there is both to improve the water quality of the river and to recognise it as an integral part of many Bristolians’ physical and mental health. So many of us turned to our local, outdoor spots during the pandemic and relied upon access to green and blue spaces for our well-being. I think it would be short-sighted and a real shame simply to continue the prohibitive approach.” The petition, which runs until 12 August, has attracted more than 1,400 signatures. Bristol City Council’s spokesperson said: “If a petition contains 3,500 signatories or more from people who live, work or study in Bristol it can then trigger the right to be debated by the full council.” The petition is at: bit.ly/ConhamRP

n KINGSWOOD HISTORY SOCIETY Ian Holloway, left, with Stephen O'Callaghan

Ollie's an inspiration FORMER football manager Ian Holloway inspired pupils at Hanham Woods academy with an end-of-term talk about how to achieve success. Mr Holloway, who was born in Kingswood and began his career playing for Bristol Rovers, addressed more than 350 pupils from years nine and 10. Principal Stephen O’Callaghan said: “I was absolutely delighted to welcome Ian to the academy and very grateful for the time he gave up to speak to students. “We want students to hear from different people and be inspired to work hard and be kind. Ian was a fantastic speaker who really got students thinking about their future.” During the three-hour visit to the school, he also looked at pupils’ artwork.

Elf 'n' safety, myth or fact? YES, it was Health and Safety presented by Roy Ackerill who was a HM Inspector of Factories and a H&S Executive. Roy presented many examples we see in our day to day life backed by many visual statistics. Highlighting some of the more notable headliners, motor racing, fairground accidents etc. Grenfell where the regulations were not fit for purpose and 56,000 still live with the same risk. Covid was covered in some detail. UK first case 31/1/20 but in Italy in 2019. Were we slow to get going in understanding the risk ? A fact; we can now expect 18 vaccinations in our lifetime ! There were a number of jovial anecdotes to accompany the presentation. Did you know the Victorians advertised sanitised tapeworms to reduce fat ? The animal that kills most humans is the mosquito second is humans ! It was finished by some interesting myths that have been associated to H&S. The truth is: Step ladders have not been banned. There is no legal requirements concerning PAT testing. Snowball throwing has never been stopped. etc. To conclude, an eye opener for most of us and common sense should prevail. A local businessman pointed out the number of contacts he has lost through ill informed businesses and the myths surrounding H&S. Next meeting at the Park Centre, Kingswood is Tuesday 2nd Aug, 7pm for 7.30 pm start. Visitors £3.50 incl tea/coffee and biscuit. A talk on Bristol Beauties by Mike Rowlands.

Sign language video helps everyone feel welcome A BOY who communicates using sign language was delighted to be welcomed to a supermarket with a video he could understand. Ernie Conway, 10, from Hanham, was visiting Asda Longwell Green with his mother, Helen, to buy ingredients to make chocolate brownies. However, he didn’t make it further than the doorway for five minutes because he was so enchanted by the video welcome sign at the store. Ernie, who has Down’s Syndrome and began signing when he was one, spotted a large video screen showing a man welcoming customers using sign language. Helen, 42, a data analyst, said: “He was just over the moon to see someone signing just like he does. He watched it over and over. “He began copying the signs and talking back to the man in the video. It brought a smile to the face of other people watching him too. “The man was welcoming people to Asda and saying that if they needed any help they could visit the customer service desk.” Helen posted the video on Twitter to thank Asda for being inclusive and making

A joyful Ernie watches the Asda video Ernie’s day. The Tweet soon had more than 100 comments, likes and retweets and Asda got in touch to write about Ernie on their website and social media pages. Ernie, a pupil at Hanham Abbots school

with twin brother Ted, is now enjoying repeat viewings of the video of him talking to the sign, and laughing at his performance along with dad Rich, 52, a tennis coach. Helen said: “A small moment like this can have a really big impact for someone by making them feel included. “And the brownies tasted really good!” Asda said the video was brought in in March to coincide with British Sign Language Week and has been kept because of its popularity. Fran Greenwood, who was part of the team at Asda who created the video, said: “It’s wonderful to see Ernie’s big smile and that sort of response is exactly why we’ve made the message a permanent feature. “We are continuously looking at ways to make the shopping experience as personal, engaging and inclusive as possible.” Helen’s Tweet was even spotted by Ishtiaq Hussain from Deafscope Link, who performed the sign language for the video. He said: “This is so nice to see! I love how it has put a smile on Ernie’s face – you can see how happy he is, bless his heart! This just shows how small changes can make a BIG difference.”

Brunel’s SS Great Britain presents: Your Ticket to Taste the World READY to embark on a global voyage of taste without leaving Bristol? Already known as the ‘world’s smelliest museum’ with hundreds of sights, sounds and smells experienced by visitors every day, Brunel’s SS Great Britain is about to get tasty this summer with a brand new activity, ‘Dishes of Discovery’. They’re inviting visitors to taste the world, offering them the chance to sample delicacies inspired by Victorian voyages to destinations visited by the ship in the 18th Century. From 23 July to 4 September, visitors who step aboard the SS Great Britain will taste historic recipes from Mumbai, Cape Town and Crimea discovering how the world’s first great ocean liner connected people and places around the world. The dishes have been created by Bristol-based social enterprise, Travelling Kitchen, whose team worked with the ship’s archivists to explore historic recipes from around the globe. The dishes created include a zingy Melon and Ginger Jam from Cape Town, traditional Borsch from Crimea and a tropical green coriander and coconut chutney from Mumbai - and are typical of those that passengers would have encountered as they disembarked in the faraway destinations. Your usual favourites at Brunel’s SS Great Britain are open all summer long, too. Don’t forget to visit the two hands-on museums, historic dockyard, dramatic dry dock and the ship herself. And remember - you can enjoy coming back time and time again with your ticket. It’s valid for a year!

Use your tastebuds to explore the world this summer at Brunel’s SS Great Britain as you discover flavours from the ship’s lesser-known destinations. Plan your adventure at ssgreatbritain.org/summer2022

Witness plea over through-about tragedy POLICE are trying to track down the driver of a silver or beige Vauxhall Insignia who may have witnessed a fatal crash on the ring road through-about on Easter Sunday. Daniel Davies, 16, from Hanham, was killed in the crash while riding his moped, which he’d owned for just four days before his death. The Digitech pupil used to deliver Hanham & Longwell Green Voice as his part-time job. He had lived in Hanham since birth and attended Samuel White’s, Hanham Abbots and Hanham Woods schools. His funeral procession was led by hundreds of moped and motorbike riders. A police spokesperson said: “Officers investigating a fatal collision in South Gloucestershire at 9.45pm on Sunday 17 April are renewing their appeal for witnesses. “They’re especially keen to

xxx speak to the driver of a silver of beige Vauxhall Insignia which had stopped at the traffic lights on the A4174 Wraxall Road roundabout in Warmley, where the collision happened. “A car and a moped collided and sadly the moped rider,

Daniel Davies, 16, of Hanham, was pronounced dead at the scene. “His family continue to be supported by specially-trained officers and our thoughts are with them. “A 27-year-old man arrested

on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving remains released under investigation while enquiries continue. “If you saw the collision or have dashcam footage please call 101 and give reference number 5222091120.” Daniel’s mother, Sam Davies, urged others to share the police appeal for witnesses to the crash. She wrote: “Please, please can as many people as possible share this for my son Daniel.” When he died, Daniel was about to begin a brick laying apprenticeship then planned to have a career working with stocks and shares. South Gloucestershire Council opened the through-about in October, following a £6.9 million building project. There have been complaints that the new layout is confusing, particularly because vehicles need to get into the left lane in order to turn right.

n AROUND THE WIs HANHAM AFTERNOON WI OUR July meeting was very well attended, in spite of the hot weather. Our speaker was Susan Symonds, and her talk was entitled “The Colourful Life of the Young Victoria.” Susan's interest was aroused when she found a photograph of Queen Victoria in the attic, it was the one we all know, her sitting in her black dress and veil taken after Prince Albert died. Looking into her background Susan discovered what a different person she really was. Victoria should never have been Queen because her father came from a large family, but they had no legitimate heirs. Victoria was born in 1819, at Buckingham Palace, her parents Prince Edward was 4th son of George111 and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld were living in Germany. Her father decided the baby should be born in England, so when her mother

was 7 months pregnant he decided to travel to England. The journey, by carriage took over a month, arriving shortly before the birth of Victoria. Her Christening name was Alexandrina Victoria which was changed to Victoria on her becoming Queen. Her father died when she was 8 years old and Sir John Conroy a Baronet, was appointed to be her regent. She found out at the age of 12yrs that she would become Queen. It was decided to find her a suitor when she became 16 and several young men were introduced to her, including Prince Albert. At the age of 18 Victoria began to show her determination and rebel against Sir John Conroy who was trying to rule her life. The first day of her reign she was visited by the Lord Chamberlain and Archbishop Of Canterbury at 6am and she entertained them wearing her dressing gown. She was described as a “Breath of Fresh Air to the Monarchy.” Following the

Coronation there was a Great Fair in Hyde Park and the Queen called it the Proudest Day of her life. Lord Melbourne, Prime Minister and her advisor decided that she should have a husband to help her reign and raise heirs. She met again with Prince Albert, who now had matured and become very handsome, Victoria decided to marry him. Although she had stated that she didn't like children, Victoria and Albert had 9 children. Victoria was described as obstinate, self centred and stubborn, Prince Albert was a very calming influence on her. Albert became her teacher and she was a willing pupil. We are hoping that Susan Symonds will return in the future to continue this intriguing story. Our next meeting, following the summer break, will be on 12th September at 1.30pm when we shall be having our Harvest Lunch. New members are always welcome, if you are interested in joining us, please contact the

Secretary on 01179325027. Peggy Workman LONGWELL GREEN WI AT our July meeting we had a very interesting and informative talk by Susan Symons on Victoria, the Widowed Queen. This was the third instalment on the life of Queen Victoria where this time we heard about her life after the death of Prince Albert. Victoria was a widow for twice as long as she was married and with her extreme grief after the death of Prince Albert she refused to make public appearances. Her son Bertie took on many of the duties that the Queen usually participated in while Victoria dealt solely with papers from the red box. Only when Bertie became seriously ill and after he recovered did Queen Victoria attend a public service of thanksgiving. There were many rumours about the relationships between

Queen Victoria and some of her servants. In 1887 Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee and in 1897 her Diamond Jubilee, at this time she was becoming very frail. She spent her last weeks at Osborne House where she died on 22nd January 1901 and was laid to rest in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore with her beloved Albert. We do not have a meeting in August but a cream tea is being arranged for members which we are looking forward to. When we return to our regular meetings in September we have a talk entitled "The Bowler Hat Turner" and also in September we have our Autumn Royal Chase Group meeting. We have lots of groups that our members can participate in. There are book clubs, walking groups, knitting group, skittles and social suppers. Linda Muller AVON FEDERATION OF WIs On Tuesday 5th July, Avon Federation held its Summer Lunch. Members from numerous WIs in the area met at Bristol Golf Club to socialise, listen to two guest speakers, and have lunch. The location was good, and with perfect weather (warm and sunny) we had a fabulous scenic view of the Severn, the bridges, and across to Wales. The speakers – both high profile women working for Bristol and surrounding area – gave very interesting and informative talks. First to speak was Sarah Crew, Chief Constable (the first female) of Avon and Somerset Police. Her talk had particular relevance for WI as a whole, as it related to the work her force is doing to combat violence against women. We then

15

had an excellent lunch, followed by the second guest speaker – Peaches Golding, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County and City of Bristol. Peaches told us about her role; the selection and appointment process, and an outline of the duties of the Queen’s representative for Bristol. Federation Chairman, Sue Murphy, presented gifts to both Sarah and Peaches, and also to another, unsuspecting, attendee. Susan Marshfield, a long-time WI member of Winterbourne Evening WI, received flowers as she was celebrating her 90th birthday that very day! Whilst the lunch was taking place, a short distance away - at The Wave, South Gloucestershire - another Avon Federation member was enjoying a special day. Georgina Moore of Frampton Cotterell WI, holder of an Unsung Hero award from the 2019 BBC Sports Personality of the Year event, was taking part in the transfer of the Queen’s baton on its journey to Birmingham, for the Commonwealth Games. Coincidentally, Peaches Golding had attended a similar event in Bristol prior to joining us for lunch. Publicity Office STAPLE HILL WI WE are not having an official August meeting – we do however have a couple of items in the diary. We will be meeting for a meal in the Grapevine in Mangotsfield: this is always a great evening, with superb food and wonderful company aplenty! In addition to this we have our afternoon tea at the Vintage Birdcage in Yate. Let's hope this glorious summer weather holds out for us. In September we have Astrid Domingo Molyneux coming to talk to us about 'Cycling full circle'. If anyone feels like cycling to the venue, please feel free! Are you reading this and thinking you would like to meet new people? Our meeting starts at 7.30pm – come and join us in Christ Church Hall on North Street in Downend. Youngsters quiz metro mayor and council leader FUTURE voters got to question the regional mayor and council leader and learn about their jobs as part of a course of lessons on democracy. Year 5 and 6 pupils at Barrs Court primary school quizzed Labour Metro Mayor Dan Norris and Conservative South Gloucestershire Council leader Toby Savage about why they decided to go into politics, which achievements they are most proud of and what their priorities are for the local area. Politicians from all parties were contacted to invite them to talk to the pupils and more talks will be happening in the next school year. Class teacher Sam Balch said: “Mayor Norris talked about his role within democracy and his job as the Metro Mayor. “He also talked a bit about his personal beliefs. “The children really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.” Head teacher Daniel Webster said: “It was great to

Toby Savage, above, and Dan Norris, right, with pupils at Barrs Court Primary School have Councillor Savage visit the school and speak with the children. “They have really enjoyed learning about local democracy in class and having our local council leader visit to talk about what he and the wider council does really gave them some great insight into the world of local politics.”

Looking for a job that really helps people? Are you a caring person? Are you a carer for a family member? Do you want a flexible job, working from home?

Cllr Savage said: “I was very impressed with their questions and they are an obvious credit to their school and families. “It is clear they are very interested in democracy and its potential for change. It would be great if, one day, some of them might consider running for office!”

A spokesperson for the Mayor said: “Metro Mayor Dan Norris visited Barrs Court School to talk with the budding politicians of Longwell Green as part of the school's drive to teach their students about democracy and empower them to take part themselves.”

n NEWS FROM OUR MP

Why I will always champion nature

Chris Skidmore writes for

Hanham & Longwell Green Voice

As your local MP, I know that protecting our environment and green spaces, including supporting local wildlife, is hugely important to local people – and that’s why I champion it both locally and nationally as the Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Environment. I was pleased recently to meet with the Friends of Siston Common whose hard work and commitment ensure that we are all better able to enjoy the great outdoors and the treasured green spaces right on our doorsteps. Siston Common is one of over 60 local green spaces benefiting through South Gloucestershire Council’s £1million Commons Connections project to support local biodiversity, creating a new “WildBelt” running from Lyde Green to Willsbridge. Supporting local nature is a key aim of two further flagship projects in the constituency – the restoration of Kingswood Park and the creation of a new Jubilee Park in Cadbury Heath. For Kingswood Park, the council has recently announced a consultation is open until 31 August that invites local people to input into its restoration. The project aims to renovate the park so that it forms the green ‘heart’ of Kingswood where people go to

Charterhouse Care Home Residential l Nursing l Respite l Dementia

enjoy high quality facilities, outdoor events, and meet other people in a safe, welcoming setting. Under the plans, the park’s accessibility, landscape, biodiversity, play area and learning experience are all earmarked for improvements. The council hopes to apply for up to £2.5 million of lottery funding in total to restore and improve the park in 2023. The restoration of Kingswood Park forms part of the council’s ambitious £25 million regeneration vision for the Town Centre – funding I have helped lobby Government Ministers on as your champion in Westminster. This has included the purchase of Kings Chase Shopping Centre and the restoration of the Whitfield Tabernacle as part of the wider Kingswood Masterplan. The recently created Town Council will help join all this together and help the community unlock the collective potential of all these projects. You can have your say by visiting www.southglos. gov.uk/kingswood-park-survey. A consultation has recently closed on which existing green space in Cadbury Heath to upgrade to a Jubilee Park to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee and the late Duke of Edinburgh’s love of nature. Thank you to all those residents who sent in their views.

n WHAT'S ON

Holy Batmobile, Batman!

SEEING the ‘weird and wonderful’ is very often part and parcel of my job, and in ten years of doing it, there really isn’t very much that surprises me any more - I think I’ve just about seen it all! However, every now and again something crops up that completely surprises me. A few weeks back I found myself on the motorway heading towards London for what I thought was a routine house call. The gentleman’s home was a little tricky to find so I had to call him for directions. As I turned in to his cul-de-sac I was greeted by the most incredible sight – a 20-foot-long replica of a Batmobile on the drive! After the gentleman answered the front door he explained how the vehicle had been an impulse purchase one night whilst browsing online, and that he didn’t use it very much – just to do his weekly shop at the local supermarket! Can you imagine?! After perusing the gentleman’s other items (all rather insignificant in comparison) I set about asking about the car. He hadn’t really thought about selling it, and he didn’t really think it was something that could be auctioned but I managed to twist his arm and a deal was struck to list it in a forthcoming sale. It was, of course, my professional duty to ensure the vehicle was in running order, so the owner very kindly took me for a spin around the block. By pure coincidence the local school had just finished so the streets were filled with children walking home. As the car roared down the road, every single person turned their heads to see. When we stopped at the traffic lights hordes of people would whip out their phones and take pictures, and other drivers would honk and wave. I have never witnessed anything like it! The whole afternoon was one I shall never forget. The car is up for auction with us as I type, but you may need to be Bruce Wayne himself to fork out the six-thousand-pounds asking price. The ultimate vehicle for the ultimate Batman fan! Andy Stowe East Bristol Auctions

Over 40? Drop in to our pharmacy for a free blood pressure check ELLACOMBE Pharmacy is on a mission to prevent heart attacks and strokes. We invite all local residents, even if you are not our regular patients, to come into Ellacombe Pharmacy as soon as possible for a free NHS blood pressure check. This NHS blood pressure check is for those over the age of 40 who have not been previously diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) and have not had their blood pressure measured by health professionals within the previous six months. It takes about 10-15 minutes in the pharmacy consultation room with a trained pharmacy team member. Following this, you may be invited to take home a blood pressure monitor that measures

your blood pressure as you go about your daily life. Depending on your readings, you may be referred to your GP. We also discuss healthy behaviours and lifestyle choices that help protect your heart. Why is this new service so important? Blood pressure is the force of your blood moving against the walls of your arteries. It is expressed as two numbers, one above the other. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a condition where your readings are raised; it needs to be controlled to reduce your risk of a heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular diseases. In the UK, there are about five million adults (one in every nine) who have high blood

pressure without even knowing it since high blood pressure itself rarely causes symptoms. You can have unknown genetic factors increasing your risk. One in four premature deaths are caused in Hanham and Longwell Green by heart disease, and 1.6 million disability-adjusted life-years can be attributed to it. Heart disease affects seven million people and is the second most common cause of premature death in England, after cancer. The British Heart Foundation estimates that high blood pressure causes over 50% of heart attacks and strokes. Together we can save lives and prevent disability. Make sure your friends and family know about this service and come in to

access it. It is free, and all blood pressure readings are sent to the general practice so records can be updated and appropriate action is taken. We know life is busy, and we all face daily pressures, especially as we navigate the high cost of living. Please accept this free offer – call us on 0117 9322293 or come in to find out more.

n MESSAGE FROM AVON & SOMERSET PCC

Protect yourself against cyber fraud AS I’ve mentioned before, I am the national police and crime commissioner lead for economic and cybercrime and, along with my team, I continue to work with Avon and Somerset Police and partners to raise awareness of the signs of fraud and prevent local people from becoming victims in the first place. As part of this work, we have distributed fraud protection postcards to over 160,000 households across 60 postcodes in Avon and Somerset. You can find this postcard in this edition of the Voice,, for you to cut out and keep beside your phone, pin on your fridge or by your front door. I want local people to use this postcard, so if and when a scammer contacts you, you know how to spot the signs of fraud and protect yourself. The postcard is also available on my website to download and print. Moving on, I’m delighted to tell

you about the fantastic results of the latest Operation Scorpion, the regional crackdown on drugs. Colleagues across the South West region carried out operations to disrupt drug supply and prevent drug crime, alongside carrying out preventative, educational and engagement work within communities. In Avon and Somerset there were almost 700 acts of disruption, including 17 arrests for drugrelated offences, 12 warrants in relation to properties and people linked to drug supply, two county lines disrupted, thousands of pounds worth of class A drugs and cannabis seized and 147 visits or safeguarding checks to addresses of vulnerable people. These results are sending a strong message to both criminals and our communities that we are intent on making the South West no place for drugs. The first priority in my police

and crime plan is preventing and fighting crime, and not only does this include important enforcement activity but also education work, to make our communities a safer place. Finally, local businesses can now access Police CyberAlarm, a free tool designed to help organisations understand and monitor the threat they face from malicious cyber activity. Police CyberAlarm, which is government funded, acts like a CCTV camera and monitors the traffic seen by business connections to the internet. The tool will show local businesses how they are being attacked, the source of the attack and will also help law enforcement identify current threats to take action against cyber criminals. Police CyberAlarm can benefit any business with a computer network, including SMEs, not for profit organisations, public

and private sector, charities, education establishments and local government. More information about this tool is on my website, avonandsomerset-pcc.gov.uk.

Author completes Mauritius trilogy A LONGWELL Green author has completed a trilogy of books based on her childhood in Mauritius. Sita Seecharrun Harris, 55, both wrote and illustrated the series, which she has self-published. Her new book, The Curse of Beti, has been stocked in Hanham library and she is organising a series of talks at local libraries this autumn. The book follows on from her earlier books When the Stars Shine and Taming of a Brew. She said: “When I was processing the loss of my mother my husband said I should write my thoughts down, because it might be therapeutic. “This turned into the first book, based on my growing up in the capital, Port Louis, and being around the tea plantations that are part of the colonial past of the country.” She will officially launch the new book back in Mauritius this month. She said: “I have had an unbelievable reaction to the books from everyone I know in Mauritius.” Ms Harris, who works in humanitarian aid and international development, met her British husband while on a UNICEF mission and moved to Bristol 25 years ago, spending the past two in Longwell Green. She has been writing since the age of 15, when she won an award for a short story that

Sita Seecharrun Harris with two of her books was subsequently broadcast on Radio France Internationale around French-speaking countries. Later this year she plans to launch volumes one and two of Island Folk Stories of the Indian Ocean, both of which she has written and illustrated.

n NOSTALGIA

POMEROY’S, LONGWELL GREEN Who remembers Pomeroy’s store in Longwell Green? Situated on the Bath Road on the site currently occupied by Tesco’s, Pomeroy’s met the day to day shopping needs of Longwell Green residents for many years. For a long time a “traditional” shop, Pomeroy’s eventually became a VG self-service shop in the days when supermarkets were in their infancy. The picture (courtesy of the South Gloucestershire Gazette) shows the shop in 1965, together with a selection of iconic cars of the time. If you have any stories of Pomeroy’s store, Kingswood Heritage Museum would like to hear from you on 0117 960 5664 or by email at: kingswoodmuseum@gmail.com

n BOWLS

THE annual Fry's Bowling Club triples competition was held on Saturday 16th July. 8 teams were competing in a round robin format. With matches lasting only 5 ends, there were a lot of close scores throughout the day. Going into the lunch break the teams of D.Shaw and J.Day were unbeaten with 4 wins each, only separated by the number of ends won. The key game came during the 6th round of matches with the unbeaten teams going head to head in what looked like it would be the decider. After a closely fought game, D.Shaw's team came out on top and despite losing their last match, came out victorious overall. Congratulations to the winners: J.Budd, V.Hopkins and D.Shaw, pictured below.

Thursday 23rd June: Frys ended the first half of the Bristol and District League season in the relegation zone after a lack lusture night at Begbrook Green 'A'. A tight start soon went the way of the home team with all rinks leaving Frys behind. Frys only took

a single point; the 38-50 defeat seeing Frys finish the first half of the season in 9th place on 40 points. Scores: Rink 1: 16-16; Rink 2: 10-19; Rink 3: 12-15; Frys 38-50 Begbrook Green 'A' (1-9). Thursday 30th June: The second half of the league season saw 9th placed Frys travelled to leaders Long Ashton. Long Ashton took the early advantage, but Frys got back into the game and after a back and forth second half the game was level with rinks 1 and 2 complete, with Rink 3 having 2 ends to finish with Frys holding a 2 shot lead. 3 shots on the penultimate end gave Frys a 5 shot lead heading into the final end. Frys had couple of bowls in the head, but Long Ashton were also close and had enough bowls waiting, with 2 shots in front the jack. With the first bowl, Frys skip split the 2 Long Ashton bowls away and stayed in the head to hold shot. Long Ashton's skip just clipped the jack closer to the Frys bowl. The penultimate saw Frys skip complete a composed draw in front of jack leaving Long Ashton a difficult shot. Long Ashton's skip missed the head leaving Frys the 2 shots seeing them home 47-40 with 8 points, ending a run of four straight defeats, jumping to 7th with Long Ashton falling to third. Scores: Rink 1: 16-10; Rink 2: 12-18; Rink 3: 19-12; Frys 47-40 Long Ashton (8-2). Thursday 7th July: Frys looked to continue from last week's win welcoming Henleaze 'A' to a warm Somerdale. Henleaze ‘A’ started stronger, but as the game neared the conclusion, Frys came alive putting in some good ends to see them home. Rinks 1

August, 2022 and 2 closed out their rinks, with rink 3 coming back with 11 shots in the final 3 ends, surviving the Henleaze skip edging the jack with the last bowl seeing Frys take all 10 points from the 56-40 win, putting Frys back into the promotion hunt. Scores: Rink 1: 14-8; Rink 2: 21-17; Rink 3: 21-15; Frys 56-40 Henleaze 'A' (10-0). Thursday 14th June: Frys would take the early advantage against Imperial and would run away with the game with rinks 1 and 3 winning comfortably. Rink 2 was a different story, with Frys taking a 5 shots lead into the final end. Despite a poor final end, Imperial only picked up 4 shots so Frys hung on for all 10 points from the 77-31 win. The win sees Frys jump to the top of the table with one result still to come in. Scores: Rink 1: 28-7; Rink 2: 1716; Rink 3: 32-8; Frys 77-31 Imperial (10-0). The cup matches proved less successful with a 35-52 loss at St Annes Park in the Bristol and District League Lloyd Trophy and a 55-97 defeat at Norwest in the Somerset County BA Turnbull Cup. The City and County of Bristol BA Clarence Davey at Ardagh was closer, with the game going to an extra end which saw Ardagh come away 84-81 winners. n NEWS FROM THE METRO MAYOR

This summer, let’s explore local THERE’S no place like home when it comes to our summer holidays, for the staycation is back. With the ever-growing cost of living, not to mention the chaos at the Passport Office wrecking even the best-laid holiday plans, many are choosing to play it safe this year and sit out their summer getaway here in the UK. After two years of ‘stay at home’ orders and jumping around the living room with fitness guru Joe Wicks, who fully knew that the solitude of the West of England could help recharge all our batteries? Who realised that we could all feel reinvigorated by strolling through the gorgeous hills of the South West countryside – a walker’s paradise – from which you can see for miles? And who appreciated that from adventure parks to nature parks, from festivals to sporting activities, all the family can have a healthy dose of wholesome fun right here in our amazing region? The secret is now well and truly out. From play and learning at family-friendly favourites like Wild Place Project to the hidden gem that is Radstock Museum, our area is jam-packed with top places to explore.

That’s why, this year, I’ve encouraged all of you to make the most of our fantastic local attractions and get behind them as our pandemic-hit tourism sector gets back on its feet. My Explore Local campaign has already helped bring thousands of tourists back to our great region, but there is a way to go yet. And so, if this to be the summer of the great British ‘staycation’ - this a phrase that’s bandied about every year, but it’s fair to say that it’s never been more fitting – let’s take full advantage by visiting the truly amazing attractions we have locally. The UK may well be the staycation nation, but there is no better staycation destination than the West of England! This summer I’ve been busy visiting many of our great attractions. There are too many highlights to mention but some deserve a special shout out. In Bath I immersed myself in the spooky history of how Mary Shelley penned her bestselling Frankenstein novel in the city. I should warn you, this one ain’t for the faint-hearted – so children will love it! I got a sneak peek of a brand-new (and free!) outdoor photography gallery from Bristol’s Royal Photographic Society, too. And I’ve enjoyed

writes for the Voice tea rooms and character in abundance in our beautiful historic market towns. We’re lucky to live in such a brilliant part of the world. While an exotic escape may be off the cards this year, have no fear. Let’s all get out there, soak in the atmosphere (and sun) and enjoy a staycation like no other. We should all fall back in love with holidaying at home here in the very special West of England. And a big bonus of keeping it local and travelling less far is that we can help save the planet too. I hope you have a great holiday.
