SPECIAL REPORT

HALL OF FAME 2018 CATHY GRIFFIN Broker, VP and environmental practice group co-leader BROWN & RIDING

An environmental insurance specialist and true pioneer in the sector, Cathy Griffin has been involved in environmental insurance since its beginnings in the 1980s. “I initially started working in environmental due to genuine interest, but it was also good timing,” she says. “I am of the generation that started Earth Day, and we all knew about Love Canal, Times Beach and other man-made disasters. The government had passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which is still the principal federal law in the United States governing the disposal of solid waste and hazardous waste. The government also created Superfund in 1980, so it was our generation that was becoming more conscientious about the environment; of what was being released into the air, water and ground; and the effects of pollutants and contaminants on people and the earth’s natural resources.” Griffin became an environmental insurance broker in 1985 and has stayed at the forefront of the sector, developing many programs for environmental exposures, including a combined malpractice/pollution program for doctors who were reviewing the indoor air quality of industrial plants to determine why people were becoming sick. She was also a leader in the development of mold insurance in the early 2000s when large multimilliondollar losses were being paid and few companies were willing to write the exposure.
