The Armistice of 1918 left a world and society in flux. The Workers’ Educational Association – which had been founded only fifteen years previously – played a key role in shaping the educational and social policies that were viewed as central to post-war reconstruction.
Our 18 month Heritage Lottery Fund supported project focused research and creative activities on three areas identified by volunteers as highly relevant to our shared heritage and present-day debates:-
Women’s empowerment within the WEA and wider society
What happened to former Conscientious Objectors and other radicals?
Repatriation, regeneration and rehabilitation
We also explored the general educational landscape during post-war reconstruction - Education Acts and Reports, WEA and other classes, and the widespread use of reading rooms.
This fully illustrated publication is the culmination of all this work and contains historical research, creative writing, songs, opinion pieces and artwork generated by the project.
