HEY BEES! I’m Betty Choy, and I’m the editor for Oakland Key Club for the 2020-2021 term. I’m here to present you the very first issue of the very first volume of Kiwi Times, a big collaboration of work between me and the officers in our club! (See Special Thanks Section) I joined Key Club my sophomore year. However, I grew to enjoy the community here, and I want everyone else to have an experience as such! This term, as the editor, I want to do a good job at starting and maintaining a new tradition in our club, which is the beginning of our own newsletter.

So yeah, please enjoy the newsletter, and make sure you stay tuned for our second issue!

Over the month of April and May, the COVID-19 Pandemic has forced public spaces, including schools, to close down for everyone’s safety.

Even though many of our upcoming service projects got cancelled, we still found ways to help out the community and earn hours while at home!

We’ve coordinated an at-home service project named Quarantine at Home, which is a way for members and officers to earn hours by doing chores around the house. This will help us in reaching the hours we need to reach the 1200 hour service goal; to give others an incentive to do these services, the person with the most hours at the end of summer 2020 gets a free FRN ticket, and that could be you!

So, do you want to see the officers of our club do a dare? Check out the Oakland Key Club Bingo Fundraiser! There’s a whole list of things you can get us to do; you can even get us to pour an entire bucket of iced water on ourselves! Venmo @Sang-Vo-4 or @DaYi-Huang with a dare of your choosing!

What is your favorite thing about Key Club?

Key Club is my entire life as it is apart of who I am. I don’t know who I would be if I couldn’t describe myself as a Key Clubber.

This student led organization has helped me grow in ways that I would not have been able to without it. Key Club is an Ohana that gives and gives, and I want to do what I can do give back. This organization is one of my biggest support system, filled with people here for me with so much support. Key Club is a community that I will always want to be be apart of. These are the reasons why I love Key Club.

What is your favorite thing about Key Club?

My favorite part about key club is the connections you make with people. Key club is a place where you can make really good friends and the events are fun too. I also love volunteering and just going to services.

I’m so excited to serve as your President for this term. My Key Club journey started my sophomore year when I joined just for fun. I didn’t realize how big of an impact it would be on my life. I can see how much I’ve grown over the years. From a member to an officer, and even a role on our Division leadership team.

Through Key Club I am able to meet new people and create everlasting memories with them. To me Key Club is not just another service club but it’s a second family. My love and dedication towards this club is unimaginable; it has allowed me to

develop a bigger passion for serving and giving back to my community. I will forever cherish every event and memory that I have created within this club. I can’t wait to get to know every single one of you and bring our club to new heights. LOVE YOU !

Hey Kiwis, I’m Cheyanne and I serve as your Vice President of Service for Oakland Key Club and your Member Recognition Coordinator for Division 2 North. It will be a pleasure to serve you all this term. My goals this term club wise are to find 6 services a month and to reach 1200 service hours. My term goals division wise is to give the recognition that everyone deserves. Throughout my years with Key Club, I was Vice President of Service for the 2019-2020 term and it is now my second term in this position. Key Club has been a really good impact in my life. I didn’t not imagine myself joining a club in

high school. Let alone spent most of my time for a club. But I am very glad that I did join Key Club because not only is it a service club where it allows me to give back to my community, it also brings people together and become on big Ohana.

I joined Key Club my freshman year not knowing what I was getting myself into.

I was super shy and didn’t talk much.

Through Key Club, I met many amazing people and got out of my comfort zone. I learned many new skills through volunteering at different services and made memories that I will always cherish. 13 Hey kiwis, I’m Betty, the editor for the 2020-2021 term! Key Club has been a lot more than a service club, it’s a fantastic learning experience in which I encourage everyone to try out! When I first joined, I thought that I’d only be in it for the service hours, but it’s been a very nice and welcoming community so I stayed for more than just that, and I’ve made arguably some of the best high school memories with this club.

14 Hello, I’m Mr. Hobaugh, your faculty advisor. In addition to providing the meeting room, I mostly provide faculty to our club. When I’m not under quarantine I enjoy long lectures in the math class with sprinkles of history lessons getting us sidetracked.

When not teaching, I like to cook and play video games; while we are at it, who wants to ditch key club and start a video games club with me? (Don’t tell Sandy or Cheyenne I’m poaching you guys) I love key club because I get to go on fun trips and to cool events with you all.

My favorite memory was from 2019 DCON when we played games.

21 K-Kids is the elementary school’s branch in the Kiwanis Family. They cultivate leadership and community service, just like the rest of the Kiwanis branches.

Builders Club is the Kiwanis branch that is situated in middle schools. Through their motto, “Building Leaders”, they also help build leadership and serving their communities.

Key Club represents the high schoolers, and was first chartered in 1925. Our core values include leadership, character building, inclusiveness, and caring. KIWINS, (another high school organization) falls under Key Club and are the 35th district!.

Circle K is the collegiate branch of the Kiwanis Family. Via their core message, “Live to Serve, Love to Serve”, they, like the others, create learning environments to form connections, serve others, and grow their leadership!

Kiwanis, situated internationally, works to create changes for children and communities in need. They are one of the backbones of the Kiwanis family, as they also support the service leadership programs within.

Aktion Club is the Kiwanis branch for disabled adults.

They offer ways for them to get involved with and serve their communities while also developing leadership via their message, “Where development has no disability”.
