NAVIGATING THE PANDEMIC Throughout the pandemic, the KCTS Board and KCT Staff have been acutely focused on ensuring fiscal responsibility while protecting operating infrastructure of the Key City Theatre.

Central to remaining in operation has been identifying short term funding to cover substantial losses in revenue while finding innovative ways to continue to deliver our mission.

Response March through June 2020 • Expenditures were immediately reduced to essentials.

• Core administration of four full time staff remained active throughout, however part time and volunteers continue to be on hiatus.

• Staff navigated administration for cancelled and postponed events.

Cancellations have had a major impact on local and regional presenters and arts organizations. Most events were initially rescheduled for late fall of 2020, and were again rescheduled or cancelled as we enter the fall.

Thousands of tickets for affected events have required extensive communication to patrons.

• While the Theatre has experienced devastating loss of revenues of nearly one hundred thousand dollars, the Society completed the fiscal year-end in June 2020 with a balanced financial position due to careful fiscal management and access to Federal supports such as the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy.

• KCTS and School District Number 5 finalize the two and half million dollar capital upgrade plans that will take place in the summer and fall of 2020.

Utilizing the opportunity of the shutdown to activate work early, upgrade plans are moved forward by several months. This included the removal and replacement of the 29-year-old stage surface in April 2020.

• As planned before the pandemic, the building is closed to the public through the fall. However, completion of upgrades has been extended from late September to early November.

• Staff completed a detailed Key City Theatre COVID Mitigation Plan • Our organization established a leadership role in ongoing national, provincial, and regional discussions to advocate for funding and sector wide guidance on safe re-opening. This includes chairing weekly province-wide virtual Townhall meetings for Performing Arts organizations and a weekly provincial task force of industry professionals that coordinates with health and governmental organizations.

• Plans for establishing alternative delivery methods in the 2020 – 2021 season such as live streaming have been developed with multiple grants to support live stream presentations and equipment acquisition submitted to the provincial government with results and implementation hoped to begin in the fall of 2020.

• The annual ‘Big Ticket’ membership drive was initiated in June 2020 with over three hundred memberships sold providing much needed financial and moral support.

ANYTHING GOES Key City Theatre produced ANYTHING GOES with a special New Year’s Eve performance, followed by six performances in January of 2020.

What a ride that was. Hijinx on the High Seas!

1,606 tickets sold DIWALI IN CRANBROOK The first event of it’s kind in Cranbrook, DIWALI was a collaboration with Cranbrook Multicultural Society.

Featuring world renowned performers the two-day celebration kicked off with a Bollywood Dance class.

The main event included a sumptuous Gala reception and a fabulous traditional music and dance performance.

A highlight was a modern dance piece by COTR international student Viraj Thakor.

THE NEXT GENERATION GEORGIA HAMILTON Columbia Basin Trust School Works program enabled us to hire college student Georgia Hamilton. She wowed us with her social media skills and over-the-top genuine zest for learning and sharing.

EVE SPERLING Our Box Office is always buzzing and with the help of the lovely and razor sharp Eve Sperling we were able to keep our ticketing and events running smoothly.

Both are pursuing post-secondary education and we wish them great success!

While the 35th Annual Kootenay Children’s Festival did not take place as planned we have exciting news!

The Festival proudly annouces the aquisition of the CU Express Train!!

The train has been a highlight of the Children’s Festival as well as many other community events for over a decade. We can’t wait to see the smiles and hear the laughter.
