Maestro Joseph Caulkins
Adventurous is a fitting descriptor for Joseph Caulkins. It has been used to describe his reputation for bold programming, world premieres and unique collaborations on the conductor’s podium, to his knack for vibrant storytelling as a freelance writer, to his pursuits as an experienced alpinist.
As a guest conductor, Maestro Caulkins has led The Sarasota Ballet, The Venice Symphony, Space Coast Pops, and The Southwest Florida Symphony where he was also Associate Conductor/Director of Choruses from 2001-2010. Prior to his arrival in Florida, he was Artistic Director/Conductor of the Bach Chamber Choir (Rockford, IL) and directed the St. Procopius Chamber Orchestra and Choirs at Benedictine University (Lisle, IL). With his choruses, Mr. Caulkins has produced numerous CDs, led European concert tours, conducted world and regional premieres and commissioned new works from Dale Warland, Eric Whitacre and Ola Gjeilo among others.
In 2019, Maestro Caulkins received the “Arts Leadership Award for Artistic Achievement” from the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County for his many seasons as Artistic Director of Key Chorale. His performances of new and rarely heard works in styles as diverse as masterworks, pops, contemporary, Baroque – even ballet – have become his trademark. Joseph’s passion for education and community outreach have shaped much of the chorale’s programming and mission during his 17-year tenure.
Joseph’s book “Developing Choral Sound Through the Warm-Up,” 200+ tried and true vocal exercises for solo singers, teachers, conductors and choirs has taken his 30+ years of experience and turned it into a highly regarded resource used by teachers and singers all over the country. It is available through Amazon and on his website.
An experienced alpinist, Mountain Joe has been fortunate to summit many iconic peaks: The Matterhorn (14,692’), Mont Rainier (14,411’), Grand Teton (13,770’), Cathedral Peak (10,911’) in Yosemite’s Tuolumne Meadows, Canada’s Mount Sir Donald and Bugaboo Spire, and Mont Blanc (15,782’) the highest mountain in the Alps. He’s climbed in the deserts of Zion National Park and Red Rocks Canyon, the snowy volcanoes and steep ridges of Washington’s remote North Cascades, to Colorado’s famous 14ers, and the icy glaciers and snowy pinnacles of the French, Swiss and Italian Alps. It is the remoteness, great friendships, sense of accomplishment, solitude, grandeur, and beauty that brings him back to the mountains whenever not on the podium.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Exaudi orationem meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Kyrie eleison.

II. Dies irae – Chorus
Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus, quando judex est venturus cuncta stricte discussurus.
Tuba mirum – Chorus
Tuba mirum spargens sonum per sepulcra regionum coget omnes ante thronum.
Mors stupebit – Baritone
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let everlasting light shine upon them. A hymn, O God, becometh Thee in Sion, and a vow shall be paid to Thee in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer; before Thee all flesh shall come. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let everlasting light shine upon them.
Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.
The day of wrath, that day will dissolve the world in ashes, as David prophesied with the Sibyl. How great a terror there will be when the Judge shall come who will thresh out everything thoroughly!
The trumpet, scattering a wondrous sound through the tombs of every land, will gather all before the throne.
Death and nature shall stand amazed when creation rises again to answer to the Judge.
Liber scriptus – Mezzo-Soprano, Chorus
Liber scriptus proferetur in quo totum continetur, unde mundus judicetur. Judex ergo cum sedebit, quidquid latet apparebit, nil inultum remanebit.
Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla.
A written book will be brought forth which contains everything for which the world shall be judged. And so when the Judge takes his seat whatever is hidden shall be made manifest, nothing shall remain unavenged.
The day of wrath, that day will dissolve the world in ashes, as David prophesied with the Sibyl.
Quid sum miser – Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor
Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Rex tremendae – Solo Quartet, Chorus
Rex tremendae majestatis, qui salvandos salvas gratis, salva me, fons pietatis.
What shall I, a wretch, say then? Whom shall I ask to plead for me, when scarcely the righteous are safe? King of dreadful majesty, who freely saves the redeemed, save me, O Fount of Pity.
Recordare – Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano
Recordare, Jesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae, ne me perdas illa die. Quaerens me, sedisti lassus, redemisti crucem passus; tantus labor non sit cassus.
Juste judex ultionis, donum fac remissionis ante diem rationis.
Ingemisco - Tenor
Ingemisco tanquam reus, culpa rubet vultus meus, supplicanti parce, Deus.
Recall, merciful Jesus, that I was the reason for Thy journey: do not destroy me on that day. Seeking me, Thou didst sit down weary, Thou didst redeem me, having endured the Cross: let not such great pains have been in vain.
Righteous Judge of vengeance, give me the gift of redemption before the day of reckoning.
I groan as one guilty, and my face blushes with guilt. spare the suppliant, O God. Thou who didst absolve Mary [Magdalene] and hear the prayer of the thief, hast given me hope as well. My prayers are not worthy, but Thou, O good one, show mercy, lest I burn in everlasting fire. Give me a place among the sheep, and separate me from the goats, placing me on Thy right hand.
Confutatis – Baritone, Chorus
Confutatis maledictis, flammis acribus addictis, voca me cum benedictis. Oro supplex et acclinis, cor contritum quasi cinis, gere curam mei finis.
Dies irae, dies illa, solvet saeclum in favilla, teste David cum Sibylla.
Lacrimosa – Solo Quartet, Chorus
Lacrimosa dies illa, qua resurget ex favilla judicandus homo reus. Huic ergo parce Deus, pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen.
III. Offertorio – Solo Quartet
When the damned are confounded and consigned to scarring flames, call me to be with the blessed. I pray, suppliant and kneeling, a heart as contrite as ashes, take Thou my ending into Thy care.
The day of wrath, that day will dissolve the world in ashes, as David prophesied with the Sibyl.
That day is one of weeping on which shall rise again from the ashes the guilty man, to be judged. Therefore spare this one, O God, merciful Lord Jesus. Grant them rest. Amen.
Lord Jesus Christ, King of Glory, deliver the souls of all the faithful departed from the pains of hell and from the bottomless pit.
Deliver them from the jaws of the lion, that hell may not swallow them up, and they may not fall into darkness; but may the holy standard-bearer Michael bring them into the holy light, as Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and his seed.
We offer unto Thee, O Lord, sacrifices and prayers of praise. Do Thou receive them on behalf of those souls whom we commemorate this day. Allow them, Lord, to pass from death to life, as Thou didst promise of old to Abraham and his seed.
IV. Sanctus – Double Chorus
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus, Dominus Deus Sabaoth!
Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis!
Benedictus qui venit in nomine
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts! Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is he that cometh
V. Agnus Dei – Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Chorus
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona eis requiem sempiternam.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world; grant them rest.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world; grant them eternal rest.
VI. Lux aeterna – Mezzo-Soprano, Tenor, Baritone
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis; cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, quia pius es.
VII. Libera me – Soprano, Chorus
Libera me, Domine, de morte aeterna in die illa tremenda.
Let everlasting light shine on them, O Lord, with Thy saints forever, for Thou art merciful. Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let everlasting light shine upon them; with Thy saints forever, for Thou art merciful.
Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day when the heavens and earth shall be moved. When Thou shall come to judge the world with fire.
I am seized with trembling and I fear the time when the trial shall approach, and the wrath to come.
When the heavens and the earth shall be shaken.
The day of wrath, that day, of calamity and misery, a dreadful and exceedingly bitter day.
Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and let everlasting light shine upon them.
Deliver me, O Lord, from eternal death on that awful day.
“Verdi’s Requiem” Program Notes
By Lynne Woodman
“One of the most sublime and terrifying works in the repertoire.” – NPR
Verdi brought his highest operatic skills to his Requiem: powerful vocal solos, stunning choral writing, bold and inventive orchestration, and an exceptional sense of drama.
The Messa da Requiem is a setting of the Catholic funeral mass for four soloists, double choir and orchestra, and is sung in Latin. It was composed in memory of the Italian novelist and poet Alessandro Manzoni, whose works Verdi greatly admired, so it is sometimes referred to as the Manzoni Requiem. It premiered on May 22, 1874, the first anniversary of Manzoni’s death, in the Church of Saint Mark of Milan in Milan, Italy.
A huge success, the requiem was performed in Italy several more times in the ensuing days, then taken on a tour of major European capitals, to even greater acclaim.
Written in seven movements, the Requiem opens with prayerful calm and praise. But that mood is exploded by the pounding heart of the Requiem, the ‘Dies Irae’, or Day of Wrath, with its stunning portrayal of the Last Judgment. The orchestra pours out the spiraling fall of the screaming damned into Hell, while the chorus cries out the terror of the Judgment Day: “That day will dissolve the world in ashes, as David and Sibyl prophesied.” This is often called the most famous musical symbol of death and is, arguable, the most well-known part of the work.
Other notable passages include the ‘Tuba Mirum’, in which the dead cry out from the ground, pleading for mercy. In the ‘Rex Tremendae’, the people bewail their sense of unworthiness to stand before the majesty of God.
The tenor solo in ‘Ingemisco’ asks for God’s mercy and offers hope of redemption to sinners. The ‘Offertorio’ is sung by all four vocal soloists with a reiteration of the work’s opening theme: the living pray for the faithful dead.
The ‘Sanctus’, scored for double chorus, announces the one who comes in the name of the Lord. The ‘Agnus Dei’ begins with an unaccompanied melody sung in octaves that is passed between the soloists and chorus in both major and minor keys before eventually being joined by the orchestra.
Eternal light is evoked in the “‘Lux Aeterna’: “Grant them (the faithful dead) eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them with your saints forever; for you are merciful.” Once again, the living pray for the dead.
The work concludes with a combination of elements from Gregorian chant and Baroque fugue in ‘Libera me’, pleading for mercy for the damned. Lines from previous movements are woven into the chorale, pulling the entire Requiem together as it comes to a close. The piece ends with the chorus and soloists begging for the doomed to be delivered. A peaceful C-major chord concludes the massive work.
The Houston Symphony calls the Requiem “An opera in disguise” and, in fact, some critics at the time of its first performances called it “Verdi’s finest opera.” Their sarcasm was an expression of their concern that the piece was too forceful a setting of Scripture to be performed in a church, where sounds should be less dramatic. Their complaint was not about the Requiem itself as much as it reflected the fact that sacred spaces at that time were often the only concert halls.
Today, the Verdi Requiem is recognized as one of the finest choral works ever written.
