Summer is a very popular time to visit and enjoy New York City and to check out not only the usual attractions but also new places, celebrations, events, and unique happenings that only occur in this city.

Below are some of the unusual experiences going on in this summer of 2018: 12th annual Make Music New York Festival Thursday, June 21, will find over 1,000 FREE concerts in public places throughout all five boroughs from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. They will feature performances at Central Park, Union Square, Governors Island, a Broadway concert in Harlem, and much more. occur simultaneously with similar festivities in over 750 cities in a global celebration of music making of all genres.

An example in New York are the live performances at the Mid­ Manhattan Library at 42nd Street. At 1:30 PM, 9 HORSES, an improvising ensemble, will feature 2018 Grammy nominee Sara Caswell on violin, Joe Brent on acoustic and electric mandolin, and Hardanger d’amore along with Andrew Ryan on bass. At 3:00 PM, the PASSION FLUTE CHOIR, a flutists ensemble, will present jazz, pop, and classical music.

Shark Week at the Aquarium The 57,000­square­foot New York Aquarium in Coney Island will debut its Ocean Wonders with a Sharks Exhibit on June 30 featuring more than 115 species of marine wildlife in more than 500,000 gallons of water. There will be a variety of sharks, fish, rays, sea turtles as well as interactive exhibitions.

Taste the Town during NYC Restaurant Week Over 350 of the city’s best restaurants will participate in three weeks of discounted dining from July 23 to August 17. This semi­annual promotion celebrates fine dining at affordable prices. Restaurants will offer three choices for both appetizers and entrées at lunchtime and three choices for appetizers and entrees and at least two desserts at dinnertime.

Wrestling’s Marquee SummerSlam WWE will return to Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on August 19. In addition, the borough will host a number of events from August 18 through the 21.

At the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, this will mark the 50th anniversary of the tennis major and will be the first tournament since the completion of the $600 million transformation. The Grand Slam event runs from August 27 through September 9.
