For the second class after our initial two day retreat, the Leadership Keweenaw teams had the opportunity to learn about our local governments. This was done by conducting a Q&A session with multiple of our local representatives. Questions ranged from the nitty gritty process of getting things done in government to how we as leaders can get involved in our government. It was very enlightening to meet the people that represent us at a Township, City, and State level and hear what they had to say about their positions. These officials stated that community member’s best way to change something they don’t like is to get involved and be active in their community. It is no surprise that difficultly exists in trying to run a local government. There is not much money that goes to officials that make our communities decisions, and few people willing to step up and run for office. This makes those that volunteer all the more admirable. It is always easy to complain about what is wrong with our community, but solutions rarely come with these complaints.
