bastrop county retreat In wake of several major natural disasters in recent years, the need for a strong architectural response to these tragedies is becoming increasingly apparent. In 2011, Bastrop County was struck by the most destructive wildfire in Texas history- the Bastrop County Complex Wildfire. Running for a month, the fire destroyed around 34,000 acres of land, taken two lives, and incinerated over 1,500 homes. The community responded in hesitancy for their future wellbeing. The Bastrop County Retreat is designed to be used not only as a disaster response building, but also a disaster prevention building.

The Retreat aims to alleviate stress and anxiety in the Bastrop community over unruly events, such as recurrent wildfires. By offering medical care, fitness resources, and a relaxing spa, the Retreat provides a recovery of mind, body, and spirit with the sense of a private escape. Integrating the natural environment into the healing process creates a serene and supportive atmosphere, rejuvenating the Bastrop community.

This project is an extensive collaborative project that followed the entire architectural design process. This includes idea conception, structural analysis, HVAC placement, budgeting, wall sections, detailed documentation, and hypothetical construction. A supplementary process book is available if interested.

(RE)CYCLE BIKE WORKS To encourage the use of sustainable transportation and create a lasting impact on the prominence of bicycles in a thriving culture, the Bike Works was commissioned in Philadelphia for the sale, repair, and promotion of bike lore. Built on a challenging site spanning two lots across a street, its primary focus is designed as an efficient factory within its interior program. Its bold, sharp statement on the exterior is meant to strengthen the community by advocating the bewilderment and prominence of the bike.

The Bike Works is located north of the Vine Street express on the abandoned viaduct of South Philadelphia. The factory is designed to distribute to the immediate area and across the country. Its program is planned to mimic the efficiency of a bicycle wheel. Its administration and retail locations are separated on both sides of Carlton Street, joined by its manufacturing center hovering above. Placing the factory above allows the manufacturing process to be streamlined and efficient. Parts are shipped in, sent up, joined together, and sold out. The convenience of this process allows for quality and speed in production. The cantilevered spaces also provide shelter provide shelter for the public.

The floating manufacturing box above proclaims the importance of the manufacturing process and use of bicycles in creating a sustainable future.

skywalk bridge To serve as a connecting terminal from the Reading Viaduct to Center City’s redeveloping neighborhoods, Skywalk is a preservation tactic for the elevated train tracks that have been abandoned in the 1980s. To tie back to the theme of a Skywalk, the bridge crosses over the Vine Street Expressway, which allows for an overview of the neighborhood and a view of the Philadelphia Skyline. A conceptual theme of lightness is shown with the use of mirrored glass on the exterior to complement the context to establish a relationship between the bridge and the surrounding city. With this incorporation of immateriality, the use of a support base system is emphasized through a cable-stayed/ suspension bridge which gives the illusion of a floating space.

Historical railways have played a large role in transit through the industrial ages, and its strong materiality, such as concrete and steel, have provided the basis for the bridge. The walking path takes more of a scenic route with the use of green spaces to contribute to the sustainable innovations used in this project which serve as intensive vegetated living roof to catch storm water run-off and protection from sun exposure. Skywalk emphasizes the ideals of a monumental piece in transportation history and exemplifies it in the modern age.

verband In a refurbished warehouse-turned-museum, a spoken word lounge exists near the shore of a river in Copenhagen. A new installation for this space calls for a stage, seating, and display that complements the historic nature and earthy materials of its context, giving purpose to the spoken word program of the space. To truly admire the space, the juxtaposition of a geometry, shape, feel, and even color combines the languages of a historic pass with the embrace of a bright, vibrant future. Verband emphasizes the resilient strength of human perseverance with the robust strength of corten steel.

A uniform ribbon of steel permeates through the space, visualizing the influence that our words have when they disperse through a room. The ribbon then becomes all parts of the program, including the seating, stage, and shelter space. Constructed from a carbon fiber space frame infrastructure, it also divides the room into an engaging public space, and a contemplation area to admire the statues independently. The ribbon continues throughout the entire building and influences the program within each room separately. It becomes the unifying piece for both human interaction and the existing building.

rustique loft Designed as an exercise in realistic rendering skills, the Rustique Loft is the ideal apartment for craftsmen and those infatuated with the comfort of traditional building materials.

Custom millwork, structural rough timber, and polished granite harmoniously bring an atmospheric warmth and relief from the hectic city life of Philadelphia. Since there is a prominence of tactile materials, emphasis is placed on the practical connections of each material. The table in particular is custom designed and constructed from reclaimed wood, iron supports, and brushed metal clips. This language is echoed throughout the apartment.

The spatial condition of the loft is designed to feel open, and maximize its usable area.

The elevated bedroom space can be converted for multipurpose uses with the retraction of the wall bed. The tall height of the loft accentuates its breathable, calming concept. The Rustique Loft is an oasis in the frenetic lives many of us experience daily.

WORK EXPERIENCE In the final two years of my undergraduate education, I have interned and freelanced in retail store design at the headquarters of Phillips-Van Heusen in Manhattan.

PVH is a clothing company that owns many traditional American brands, including Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Van Heusen. As an intern in the store design department, I received invaluable experience not only in store layout design, architectural identity, and production logistics, but the empathetic qualities in designing for the human scale.

Working intimately with the lead designer, I adapted the skills necessary for ensuring quality projects were produced. A fine balanced was formed toward scrutinizing project details, without detracting from its the overall impact. It was not uncommon for several projects from many different brand identities to be engaged in the same day, or even in the same conversation. Close studies were involved with plan, elevation, and section design, documenting these professionally, and frequently visualizing them in 3D. Deliverables revolved heavily around unique material choices that were costeffective and more importantly, appropriate and inspiring. Since PVH is a corporation, I experienced heavy collaboration with multiple disciplines, including graphic design, web design, and video editing. The internship strengthened my worldview of the true universality of design. This section is a culmination of projects I have actively had a role in both designing, documenting, and visualizing.

expedition mars Expedition Mars is a feasibility study that challenges human colonization on Mars in the extreme case of evacuation from earth. Designed as a thesis project with two collaborators, the team produced a project that incorporates a culmination of research on life sustainability, environmental conditions, appropriate materiality choices, and innovative design to maintain life on Mars.

Inspired by the Mars One project, ambitiously claiming that humans can survive on Mars, we responded in creating the architectural context. The immediate critical factor addressed was the availability of water and oxygen - which through evidence of existing ice caps and elemental conversion proves the possibility to survive. Aided by generative and parametric design techniques, we concluded that the most practical way to coexist on this planet would be to create modular pods that each were designed with a different purpose: residential, production, and transportation. We quickly learned that survival was not only dependent on human interaction with the environment, but the social interaction of urban design with each other.

Several iterations were produced that compounded site specific challenges such as radiation, dust storms, and vegetation production. Ultimately, terraforming would be introduced on the ground level to create a habitable atmosphere for basic human survival. Through the use of exponentially advancing technologies, Expedition Mars sets the precedent for interstellar architecture and introduces the discussion for the future of architecture and mankind.
