Specialties

Welcome! I hope you have enjoyed this summer. As the summer comes to an end and fall is approaching we look forward to some new and some- time honored traditions within the Chamber. I am proud to announce the 24th Annual Cedar Beach Music & Arts Festival on September 27th and 28th . Come down and see just some of the many talented local musicians and artists we have here, home on Long Island. Bring your chairs and dancing shoes and while you are there stop by the vendors and get to know your local businesses and Chamber members. See what they have to offer! Chamber membership is comprised of over 300 local business people, civic organizations, your public libraries and some of your neighbors that volunteer to enhance the quality of life within the towns of Terryville, Port Jefferson Station, Mt Sinai, Miller Place, Sound Beach, Rocky Point, and Shoreham that we represent. We provide support for our local businesses while maintaining community involvement. This past year, due to the success of last year’s events, we were able to award annual $1,000.00 scholarships to 5 High School Seniors within the 5 local school districts. We believe in supporting local schools and programs that promote and prepare students for a future in business. We want our children to find a future here on Long Island. The Chamber is ever evolving. Finding new and innovative ways to help promote and maintain local business membership as well as the communities we serve. I am confident to say that as the President of this fine Chamber and on behalf of its Officers and Directors we stand behind our members. We strive for a strong, profitable and recognizable local business community that the community can turn to for all its needs. Thank you for your time and I look forward to seeing you in and around the towns. Enjoy the rest of this year and remember to “Shop Local”, it strengthens our communities! Sincerely, Jennifer Dzvonar President, North Brookhaven Chamber

History of the cedar beach blues festival When the summer ends, music fans know there will be one last blast of blues and roots to carry them through the coming wintry blasts and blizzards. That is the Cedar Beach Music and Arts Festival. This is Long Island’s largest and oldest blues festival. It is the gathering of the faithful and a tribal pow-wow for the blues and roots community providing a tribute to the power of music to delight, uplift and entertain. We gather to honor American music in all its various forms and celebrate with over 100 of Long Island’s finest musicians. Perched on a scenic shoreside beach on the LI Sound, our 2 stages will provide different environments, our bands will generate different sounds and our audiences will enjoy in different ways but one thing is constant, we are here to share a common experience and open ourselves to a weekend of joy, exploration and recreation via the power of music played by real people and generating the kind of give and take that can ONLY happen when people come together with the blues! Acoustic or electric, urban or country, Chicago Or Delta, the groove is what you crave and your appetite will be quenched, we guarantee. Adding liberal helpings of funk, soul, jam, folk roots and Grateful Dead, you will be filled with downright and way good! Add to that unique crafts creations, business displays, opportunities to meet your favorite non-commercial DJs and more, the weekend is filled with fun. Sponsored by the North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Blues, this festival has evolved even as its focus has remained singularly one. The early years featured a few acoustic acts on a decrepit hay cart, rowboat races, tug of wars and other simple events but things got larger as our vision grew. By the mid-90’s, the fest was held bi-annually and we raised funds to renovate the park’s playground. The charitable aspects of the fest have also stayed with us as proceeds go to support the Chamber’s Scholarship Fund and keep the flag flying over the railroad car. Over the past 2 decades, we have survived rain, wind, hurricanes and rain. Oh yeah, it rained some too! We have held the fest at the Peach Farm, Bald Hill, the Wedge and Rocky Point elementary school but have always returned to the place that is Cedar Beach. Our 24th year features 2 stages and 35 acts, a food court, displays and a unique location. Climatic concerns aside, browse and eat, listen and dance and most importantly, enjoy ourselves. We take pride in welcoming you, bluesfans, neighbors, friends and residents to our bit of heaven here at Cedar Beach. We hope you try both stages, get a bite, buy a unique trinket, talk with local business people, patronize a sponsor and, most importantly, have a blast. Thanks for coming.

BOB WESTCOTT/MIKE GERONIMO Guitarist Bob Westcott is no stranger to Long Island audiences. His career began as a teenager playing guitar in the streets and baskethouses of Greenwich Village, and, more auspiciously, as one of the very first members of the Wes Houston Band. Both timely and timeless, his astonishing guitar playing and universally resonant songwriting have made him a perennial favorite on the Long Island scene and he impresses audiences wherever he goes. Bob has opened for several nationally-known performers, including John Hammond, Merle Haggard, Richie Havens, Tom Paxton, The Nields, and most recently, Richard Shindell. His ‘’Annual Holiday Revue’’ is a perennial favorite event of Long Island audiences, and he is much in demand as a session player, showcasing his breathtaking skill as a fingerpicker and multi-instrumentalist.

BREAKAWAY Breakaway is a band from New York that plays Original American Rock n Blues n Roll, plus select covers. The band consists of Howie Haber and Lou Carrollo on guitars and vocals, A. M Cannon on drums and vocals, Dustin Hickey on bass and Joe Genossa on Keyboards In 2012 Lou Carrollo and Howie Haber were inducted into The Blues Hall of Fame. In 2014 the entire band was inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame. We were finalists in the 2009 New York/NJ Blues and Jazz Society Challenge, the 2005 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN and the 2005 Long Island Music Festival run by Goodtimes Mag. We have shared the stage with Poppa Chubby, Hubert Sumlin, Albert Castiglia, Alexis P Suter, Sam Taylor, Nicole Hart, Bennett Harris, and have opened for The Doobie Brothers and Chicago.

BROTHER DAVE Brother Dave is a Guitarist/Vocalist who defies categorization. DEBORAH LOMBARDI Deborah Lombardi can often be described as a country music version of Liz Phair or Throwing Muses. Though not letting one genre define her, this Long Island based singer-songwriter has a knack for mixing elements of rock, country and pop, with catchy melodies and thought-provoking, and sometimes humorous, lyrics. Supported by her passionate voice and multi-instrumental abilities on guitar and piano, she can hold her own whether she’s performing solo-acoustic or backed up by her band. Deborah has released two full-length albums – “On The Fringe” and most recently “Sweet Revenge”. Deborah’s songs have won accolades in several songwriting contests, and have been featured in film and on national TV, including Animal Planet.

Band Bios DELTA BOY Paul “Delta Boy” Ruzenski performs as a solo bottle neck slide guitarist in the tradition of Son House, Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters; incorporating original songs into his performance. Delta’s commitment to the Blues goes back to the early 1970’s when he was given personal advice from Blues legends – Muddy Waters, James Cotton and Howlin Wolf. He is well versed in the history of the Blues and continues to share his knowledge in occasional talks and with his music; playing on a Gibson Harlem Slim L-1 and steel Dobro. Delta Boy has played in festivals across the country, appeared on TV and radio. The last time Delta Boy played at the Cedar Beach Blues Festival was in 2012 with his good friend and amazing harp player, Ed Gallagaher.

DIESEL

Diesel is comprised of Jim Falacara on bass / vocals and Michael Scalzo on drums. Every gig is made special with a wide array of talented musicians to kick up the energy level...

FRANK LATORRE AND THE KINGBEES Frank Latorre has been playing blues on Long Island since 1970. An accomplished Harmonica , Guitar player and singer he built his chops in Atlanta Ga. in the early 70s where he played with the Allman Bros., Eric Quincy Tate and other legendary southern performers. In the 80s Frank formed the Long Island based King Bee Blues Band and Headlined at many NY clubs and festivals. Most recently Frank played and recorded Harmonica with Johnny Winter , his licks can be heard on Johnny’s record Roots and soon to be released CD. Franks band is now called Frank Latorre and the Kingbee’s and has represented the Long Island Blues Society in Memphis Tn . Frank is a 4 time Memphis International Blues Challenge alumni.

GARY SELLERS Gary Sellers wasn’t born with a guitar in his hand, but you’d never know it. His smooth riffs and heartfelt licks drip with emotion that pours straight from his soul to his fingers. While he always loved music, it wasn’t until Gary turned 17 that he picked up a guitar. Soon after, he discovered the Long Island blues scene. Gary frequented local clubs with his black-and-white marble notebook in hand, always jotting down song ideas and things he’d learned from watching the different bands play. The “boy with the book” caught the eye of Long Island Blues legend Sam Taylor, who would eventually become his mentor. Jump forward a few years to today as Gary’s latest album Soul Apparatus has just been released. You’ll find a more mature musician who hasn’t lost his chops or his soul as he strives to entertain a wider audience.

GRAND FOLK RAILROAD Grand Folk Railroad brings on the fun with an eclectic/eccentric mix of folk-rock-flavored, flower-powered forgotten favorites, 60’s pop gems, one hit wonders, and the inspiring songwriting of lead singer Susan Cohen. With a big voice that’s deeply rooted in old school country, you might expect honky-tonk inspired tales of love and loss from Susan. But there’s an edge and a sense of sophistication that quickly become apparent as the stories and melodies in her finely crafted songs reveal themselves. With a makeevery-note-count approach to performing, a vast eclectic repertoire, questionable regard for folk music traditions and a variety of instruments including acoustic and electric guitar, banjo, melodica, ukuele, upright, electric and Ashbory (rubber stringed) bass, Grand Folk Railroad blurs the lines between pop, rock, folk and singer/songwriter genres.

GRATEFUL GIRLS/BROTHER PLUCKERS Grateful Girls are an acoustic duo featuring Cindy Lopez on vocals/percussion and Katie Pearlman on guitar/ vocals. This duo is what you get when two strong front women share effortlessly in music, trading lead vocal duties and harmonizing throughout. Their repertoire covers personalized takes on the music of The Grafeful Dead, Motown, traditional standards, and original compositions. The Brother Pluckers are a four piece acoustic outfit which feature 3 and 4 part harmonies and refreshing bluegrass takes of classic covers. Whenever they perform audiences can’t help singing along and dancing to their energetic and infectious grooves. The Brother Pluckers are Rich Bente on Upright Bass/vocals, Michael Costello on Lead Guitar/vocals, Brett Desing on Rhythm Guitar/vocals, and Cindy Lopez on Vocals/percussion.

Band Bios NEW BUGS A New Bug is a team of musicians looking to make an imprint on every stage & venue they play. Formed August 2011 in Long Island their sole intentions were to crawl into the nooks & crannies of their audiences ears; spreading musical phantasmagoria to all their senses. Eddie Lo (guitar/vocals) & Nick Diaz (bass) always connected musically through the cosmic coincidence of their birth days falling on the same date. Mike Boulanger (drums) knew Eddie Lo from being in previous bands with him in the years dating back to 2006 & 2009. A New Bug still proves to be on the road to ruin, in the best of ways, still playing shows in NYC and Brooklyn and working on their second album “Weird Year” to be released in August of 2014.

JOEL PARNESS AND THE OPEN HOUSE BAND Joel Parness is a bluesman who was raised in Plainview, Long Island. He studied blues with Ira Newborn and Dan Axelrod, but also attributes much of his learning to musician friends he’s known all his life. His love for the blues started with legends like the Winter brothers, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and others. Joel had the opportunity to play and learn at The Berklee School of Music. His passion for the guitar came earlier. After hearing “Satisfaction,” by the Rolling Stones on his father, a sax player, and mother, a classical pianist’s car radio, that was all she wrote. The band’s passion for the blues is a reflection of their love of music in all its diverse beauty.

PIEDMONT BLUZ Ben and Valerie Turner, The Piedmont Bluz Acoustic Duo is dedicated to the preservation of Country Blues and the Piedmont style and their mission is to help keep this rural, east coast tradition alive by educating audiences about this unique aspect of African American culture through musical entertainment. They have been entertaining audiences at venues along the east coast from Woodstock, NY to Richmond, VA and are much loved wherever they go. The husband and wife duo feel that “there are stories to tell, people to remember, and things that must be said” so, in addition to tickling your ears with delightful music, they weave a bit of history into the presentation of each song.

REMEDY Although a relatively new band to the L.I. music scene, Remedy is made up of a group of seasoned pros with a quarter century of gigging experience. Remedy weaves an easygoing atmosphere at their shows and wows audiences with musicianship and an eclectic mix of music. With well-crafted sets of favorites ranging from the 60’s through today, Remedy plays a wide variety of rock’s classic icons on through to today’s best like Muse, Kings of Leon and the Black Keys. Songs that will be familiar to all who love great rock, but they try to dig a bit deeper in the mix, steering away from the songs that often get overplayed. Remedy is the cure for the same old cover band syndrome.

THE RHYTHM AND BLUES EXPRESS Butch Cavouto, Drums, Billy Cumm, Guitar, George Bostick, Guitar Lead singer, Ron Austin, Organ, Johnny Anzalone Bass Guitar. We are the members of the group and have been around for a long time in the recording and performing part of the music business. We specialize in Blues and also play from time to time some Rhythm and blues songs that are danceable such as funk and groove music. We are influenced by The Robert Cray Band, BB King, Jimmy Hendrix, Stones, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Fredi King etc.

RISOTTO AND SPINA Joe Spina and John Risotto have performed together since the early “Rear View Mirror Days” and the “MilesRoad Band” of the late nineties. The duo plays original music with guitars and mandolins. They are a bit folky with lots of Rock n Blues influences from Led Zeppelin to Donovan. Joe and John are currently recording their first album of original material. Don’t miss this show…you’re gonna love it!

ROCKET AND BRUCE MACDONALD/ROCKET’S JAM Ken Korb has been “the Rocket” since he stepped into the Long Island scene over thirty years ago. He has been there ever since, getting better and better at the many instruments he plays; and branching out from the blues into diverse musical genres, especially country, old-timey and jazz. Though he plays mandolin, whistle, clarinet, guitar, and washboard, he is first and foremost a harmonica player. His skill and versatility on diatonic and chromatic harmonicas, his amazing musicality, and his ability to tailor his playing to fit any situation have made him a local legend and a sideman in demand. Even the stories and jokes he tells are legendary! Currently, Ken is performing often, at the North Fork wineries with the guitarist Bruce MacDonald, as the leader of the Red River Ramblers, an old-time country band; and as an active member of the Kerry Kearny Band.

WHO ARE THOSE GUYS The WHO ARE THOSE GUYS sound has been compared to The Band, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Dylan and Creedence. Their music is a mix of rock, blues, folk and country with a classic sound that’s all their own. A CDbaby.com review called Who Are Those Guys.....”The rightful heirs to Big Pink.... From the innate pop sensibilities of the 60’s sounding Blue Skies to the surf sound of Surfin’ with Neil, and the cry in your beer country twang of Up All Night. These guys play new music with a classic vibe. Very Groovy!” The members include brothers Marty and Doug Attridge, Jim Gorman, Tom Daly, Pat Petrosini and Lindsay Reeve.

ZENBOCK Zenbock is the alter ego of a lifelong lover of the blues, low-budget horror films and the sci-fi epics of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The Zenbock Vulcan persona was born in 1994 when he brought his one-man Galactic Boogie Band to fantasy and sci-fi conventions. “Everyone said I should develop a persona,” he explains, “so I combined a bit of Vulcan lore with the presentation and demeanor of my inspiration, the TV legend John Zacherley, and came up with Zenbock, the Blues Vulcan.” The sound of the Galactic Boogie Band, with Zenbock on vocals, guitar and keyboard, has been described as Willie Dixon meets Devo.

Benefits of joining a chamber A chamber of Commerce is an organization of local businesses whose goal is to further the interests of its members. Business owners in towns form these groups advocate on behalf of local businesses with local government issues. When joining this chamber you will also have many opportunities to promote and showcase your local business. Some of these opportunities include but are not limited to – attend monthly meetings, advertise in local papers at a reduced rate, Free table at the Cedar Beach Music & Arts festival, Member to members discounts, and to meet and make some new friends who are here for the same purpose – to help grow your business!

Why is it important to shop local? Shopping local creates jobs. Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local economy. Local independent shops invest more in our communities. Local businesses are proportionally more generous in their support of local charities, schools, and community events. So supporting local shops means a financial contribution to your community. Local shops sell great products at affordable prices. Some people get out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products available. Shopping locally saves you time and money. You travel less, saving on time and fuel. Shopping locally retains our communities. People don’t like losing shops and services in small towns but don’t equate this with how they spend their money. Shopping locally retains our distinctiveness. Independent shops create distinctive shopping experiences and stock different products. Local businesses respond more quickly to the needs of local customers, stocking products to meet changing population needs. Shopping locally saves the environment. Local shops often stock a high percentage of locally sourced goods that do not require long-distance transportation, helping to reduce our global footprint. Local shops are for everyone. Most people can get to their local shops easily. This is especially important for the elderly, young people and others who rely on public transportation. Local shops value you more. Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service. Shopping local saves services. Private and public sector services cluster around shops. As shops disappear so do hairdressers, banks, restaurants and other businesses. Together we can strengthen relationships that improve our quality of life. So next time before you make a purchase, Think. Shop. Buy. Local.

cuts for the town and county portions of their taxes. According to the legislation’s co-sponsor, state Assemblyman Steve Englebright (D-Setauket), the average veteran homeowner could save as much as $400 under the new law if his or her respective school district opts in. Taxpayers living in school districts that opt in would see a tax increase, as the district’s assessed property value would decrease. “I hope there’s a way to overcome the obvious budgetary difficulties,” Englebright said in a phone interview.
