RESUME

My name is Kevin Ufua. I am originally from Nigeria but was raised in Baltimore MD. From a young age, I found myself drawn to the built environment. The way buildings harmoniously blend with the natural surroundings or stand as striking landmarks fascinated me. I would spend countless hours observing and analyzing the structures around me, dissecting their forms, materials, and spatial arrangements. It was during these moments of contemplation that I realized my profound love for architecture.

Participating in architectural competitions, attending workshops, and connecting with professionals in the field have been instrumental in my growth. These experiences have broadened my horizons, exposing me to diverse architectural styles, techniques, and philosophies. Through continuous learning and collaboration, I strive to refine my abilities and expand my knowledge base.

Looking ahead, my passion for architecture is intertwined with my long-term goals. Thesis Question: In what ways can architecture and community development initiatives address the issue of youth involvement in street gang violence within local under-served communities?

Importance of the Issue: The prevalence of social unrest and crime, particularly in areas like Baltimore, highlights the urgent need to address the affiliation of young adults with street gang violence. The dominance of these activities, coupled with a lack of safe spaces and constructive opportunities for personal growth, often leads young people astray. It is crucial to recognize the importance of creating supportive environments that provide proper amenities and mentorship for young adults, empowering them to make positive choices that will shape their future.

Thesis Statement: Providing young adults in under-served communities with access to suitable facilities and mentorship opportunities can significantly influence their decision-making and personal development in adulthood.

Building Proposal: The Youth Cultural Center can benefit the community by reuniting of the broken pieces of the community with filling the empty urban void of the community.

Concept: Rebuilding from the broken fragments of the neighborhood due to looting and rioting from the death of African-American (Freddie gray) who died at 25 years old from police brutality.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The site, situated at 4500 Loch Raven Boulevard in the New North-wood neighborhood, boasts numerous assets that greatly benefit the community. Notable among these assets are the North-wood United Methodist Church, a learning center, and a library. Additionally, a new fire station is being constructed to replace the old one at 1201 East Cold Spring Lane. This upgrade will not only double the capacity but also enhance the services offered, enabling prompt and efficient responses to emergencies.

GOAL

The project serves as a sanctuary for the firefighters, providing them with a home away from home. It cleverly separates the public areas, which are designated for community use, from the living and operational spaces reserved for the firefighters. The building seamlessly incorporates the grain and small-scale aesthetic of the neighboring residential buildings, effectively defining the living quarters for the personnel.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The site, situated at 1829 Pennsylvania Ave. Baltimore MD 21217. I provided design and permitting services for the interior and exterior renovations and repairs of a new office and meeting space for the Planning Committee within a historic neighborhood. Working as the project manager, I was responsible for all aspects of the architectural work, which encompassed site visits and field verification. The architectural drawings submitted for permit were specifically tailored to meet the requirements of a private client.

GOAL

As a professional architecture designer, my role involves creating innovative and functional designs for various projects. I work closely with clients to understand their needs, preferences, and budget constraints. Using my expertise in architecture, I develop concepts and create detailed drawings that depict the proposed design. Throughout the design process, I collaborate with other professionals, such as engineers and contractors, to ensure the feasibility and practicality of the design. I conduct site visits and field verifications to gather accurate measurements and assess any limitations or opportunities that may affect the design.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: A-2 RESTAURANT FIT-OUT FOR MIXED-USE BUILDING

1. Commercial Kitchen:

a. Design and construct a fully functional commercial kitchen that complies with local health and safety regulations.

b. Install adequate equipment and ventilation and exhaust systems to maintain air quality and manage cooking odors.

2. Compliance and Safety:

a. Ensure all construction and fit-out activities adhere to relevant building codes, zoning regulations, and safety guidelines.

b. Obtain necessary permits and approvals from local authorities.

GOAL:

The primary goal of this project is to transform the designated A-2 restaurant space within the mixed-use building into a fully functional and visually appealing establishment. The fit-out will focus on creating a commercial kitchen, accessible restroom facilities, service spaces, and an interior dining area that meet the needs of the restaurant while complying with applicable regulations.
