PLAYGROUNDS ALIVE

Playgrounds Alive was an independent study as part of my BLA final year Capstone project. All graphic work is completed by Kevin Sadlemyer.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Playgrounds Alive connects people of all ages, abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds within the Capital Regional District (CRD) of British Columbia through the use of movable, shared, modular playground equipment. 16 playgrounds are meant to rotate throughout all 13 municipalities and 3 electoral districts of the CRD, within the fully accessible regional parks and trails system of the CRD, as a means to break socioeconomic boundaries.

PROBLEM Income inequality is creating socioeconomic boundaries within the geography of the Capital Regional District of British Columbia. Large income gaps can diminish economic growth if these gaps mean the region is not fully using the skills and capabilities of all its citizens or if these gaps undermine social cohesion.

The Capital Regional Gap Analysis , as seen on the right, looks at the household income that is required to afford shelter long a housing continuum and then presents that distribution in relation to housing supply.

The red dashed line indicated the divide between non-market housing and market housing. There is an evident over supply of income, market ownership housing and an insufficient supply of low-income housing options. This in turn creates an imbalance in the market supply putting strain on affordable market housing options and is a major contributor to the creation of socioeconomic boundaries within the Capital Regional District.

Low Income- NHS=$15,000 to $29,999, households with a before tax annual household between 50% of median income for region.

Moderate Income- NHS=$50,000 to $59,999, households with a before tax annual income between 80% and actual median income for region.

Moderate To Above Moderate Income- NHS=$60,000 to $79,999, households with a before tax annual income between the regional median household and and 120% of the median household income.

Above Moderate Income to High Income- NHS=$80,000 to $99,999, households with a before tax annual income between 120% and 150% of the median household income for the region.

High Income- NHS=$100,000 + <, households with a before tax annual income of 150% and above the median household income for the region.

COMPENSATION & GUIDELINES

ROTATION & ADVERTISING

Every 2 years the CRD will host a design competition where the top 16 Playgrounds Alive submissions will be chosen.

Each Playgrounds Alive installation will move throughout the CRD every 1 1/2 months so as to rotate throughout all 13 municipalites and 3 electorial districts of the CRD within the span of 2 years.

All playground design submissions will adhere to the Canadian Standards Association’s and the Capital Regional District’s guidelines for playground design.

A maximum budget for each Playgrounds Alive installation, including design, material and fabrication to be established. The majority of the budget to be supplied by the CRD with part of the budget left for personal investment and/or sponsorship. Establishing a maximum budget keeps Playgrounds Alive affordable for designers, manufacturers and the CRD. A maximum budget of $15,000 per Playgrounds Alive installation is suggested with $10,000 of that money being provided by the CRD.

All 16 Playgrounds Alive locations to adhere to the CRD’s Universal Access Plan for their regional parks and trails system so as to be accessible to people of all ages, abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

SOLUTION

Each Playgrounds Alive installation to be embedded with an advertisement panel displaying names of designers, manufacturers, sponsors and the Playgrounds Alive organization.

For those tech savy people out there, a way finding system will be incorporated into Playgrounds Alive describing installations, their locations and when and where they are to move within the CRD.

All Playgrounds Alive installations will be the property of the CRD. All legal responsibility will therefore be passed onto the CRD.

BIDDING & VOTING At the end of the Playgrounds Alive 2 year cycle, the top 2 voted installations by the public will be relocated to Beacon Hill Park where they will remain for another 2 years before being replaced by subsequent winners.

The remaining 14 Playgrounds Alive installations, plus the 2 Playgrounds Alive installations from Beacon Hill Park being replaced by 2 new installations, will be bidded on by the public.

Proceeds from the bidding on Playgrounds Alive installations will go to the CRD to cover transportation and inspection costs acrued during the 2 year period.

EXISTING REGIONAL PARKS & TRAILS SYSTEM The current regional parks and trails system as of 2018 does not fully integrate into all municipalities and districts of the CRD. The goal for Playgrounds Alive is to have a regional park and a regional trail cross paths in all municipalities and districts of the CRD.

PROPOSED REGIONAL PARKS & TRAILS SYSTEM BY CRD The 2012-2021 Regional Parks Strategic Plan for the CRD proposes a more integrated regional parks and trails system to be implemented within the century. The lands and trails aquired for the regional parks and trails through the Land Acquisition Fund contribute significantly to the environmental, economic and social sustainability of the region. The fund are generated through a levy set at a rate of $20 per average residential household. The fund is projected to generate approximately $3.7 million each year to 2019.

ADDITION TO PROPOSED REGIONAL PARKS & TRAILS SYSTEM WITH SITE Locations for Playgrounds Alive are arbitrarily chosen based on locations closest to geographical centers and where regional parks and regional trails cross paths. Playgrounds Alive proposes 3 regional parks and 1 regional trail in addition to the 2012-2021 Regional Parks Strategic Plan for the CRD.

1 Modular, movable playground equipment measuring 6’H x 7.5’L x 7.5’W. Each playground to be constructed in accordance with the Canadian Standards Association.

2 Pour-in-place rubber pad measuring 18’W x 18’L to provide fall protection for playground. All rubber pads to be equipped with identical Playgrounds Alive installation attachment configurations for ease of rotation around the CRD. 3 Benches adjacent to Playgrounds Alive to seat 4 people. Provides area for rest and for passive engagement. Equiped with built in charging station for all electronic hand held devices.

4 Deciduous trees adjacent to Playgrounds Alive to provide shade and verdent background to Playgrounds Alive area.

5 12’ LED light post to generate power solely from photovoltaics.

Providing light on Playgrounds Alive area extends time people can use the space and reduces crime.

6 Garbage and recycling recepticle located upon entry into Playgrounds Alive area to encourage a clean environment for all.

The requirements of this project was to design and complete a construction drawing package for Douglas R. Fluhrer Park. Using background information and base files provided by professors I was to create a drawing package of sufficient detail for pricing and construction. The package format follows industry standards at 24”x36” page size and includes the following drawings: Title Page, Site Preparation Plan, Layout Plan, Grading Plan, Planting Plan, Details Sheet.

This is the Ambrose residence in Victoria B.C. designed and built in 2015 by myself and a construction crew consisting of friends and colleagues. The spiral sculpture was design by myself with metal fabrication completed by a professional metalsmith. All design and construction adheres to local building codes and bylaws.

BEFORE & AFTER RESIDENCES

This is the Huang residence in Victoria B.C. designed and built in 2015 by myself and a construction crew consisting of homeowners, friends and colleagues. The concrete address sign and walkway were designed by myself and installed by a journeyman carpenter. All design and construction adheres to local building codes and bylaws.

COMPETITIONS

Winter Stations 2018 theme: RIOT: violence; uproar; outburst of uncontrolled feelings; a large or varied display. I was a part of a 6-member team for this competition. Our team was 1 of 7 winners for the 2018 Winter Stations competition. We constructed our installation for display on the beaches of Toronto from February 15 to April 1, 2018. Ideation was a group effort with the perspective below being my responsibility.

COMPETITIONS

P.L. ROBERTSON PUBLIC SCHOOL

This is “Ecoscarpment,” my team’s 2017 design submission for P.L Robertson Public School under the Come Alive Outside organization. I was part of a 7-member team competing against a total of 3 teams placing 2nd overall. This playground design was a group effort with the rendering of the final masterplan, as seen below, being my responsibility.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Ecoscarpment aims to enhance the connection between children and nature through hands-on continuous play opportunities. Ecoscarpment draws inspiration from the near-by Niagara Escarpment to foster a sense of wonder, environmental responsibility and continuous learning, all while resolving the site’s issues and giving the students a space in which they can all play, rain or shine.

Wood city is a modular log obstacle course area that ties into existing play structures on site. The surface, composed of mulch, is contained by logs, on which children can sit, balance and play on. This will provide a play area free from dirt and slippery obstacles on rainy days during blacktop recess.

A sunken pollinator garden features a mulch pathway, a pollinator garden bed featuring herbacous and woody plant material and a tall grass massing around the perimeter.

A non formal hedgerow of mixed conifer species are planted for wind protection.

COMPETITIONS

NXT City design 2017 submission in collaboration with physics’ student Denis Sonin and fine arts student Kate Owen. Ideas were brought together as a group. Logo designed by Kate Owen and all computer graphics done by Kevin Sadlemyer.

Out of approximately 150 submissions, our team placed top 50, making the first shortlisted round.

CONCEPT STATEMENT Located within Dundas Square, Parallel to Younge Street, a 4 meter by 12 meter pop up installation called “Elevated State” is designed to improve public space by creating an atmosphere where people can express themselves, both actively and passively, day and night. Using state of the art Muzo technology, the sound from overhead speakers, powered from a solar panel, will be cancelled out to a range of 15-20 feet, from the source. This will create a sound bubble for participants where songs, chosen from an iHeartRadio App, consisting of over 20 million filtered songs, can be played without causing noise disturbances to adjacent areas. A touch screen station on site will give people the chance to access this iHeartRadio App to choose songs, while feeling like a superstar either dancing, walking, or standing on a red turf grass carpet under coored LED star lights strung overhead.

NXT CITY

TECHNOLOGY Speaker with built in sound cancelling technology, touch screen interface allowing song selection and solar panel providing power.

QUICK-N-FAST Pop up installation components are easy to assemble with very little manufacturing, maintenance or training needed.

PROGRAMMING People of all abilities within dundas square experience a state change while passively or actively interacting with “Elevated State.”

ACCESSIBILITY A red turf grass carpet situated in “Elevated State” delineated the space parallel to a public sidewalk and is situated within a public square.
