Editor’s Letter

In January I had the privilege to visit Tokyo, Japan and realized that I needed to travel a lot more often. Traveling to another city or country seems to add an intrinsic value or added dimension to my personality, development and empathy for others. This issue highlights many of the journeys that we have been grateful to experience over the past six months, the level of growth showcased by talent featured within the pages of the magazine as well as our brilliant staff. I continue to be amazed at the level of love and support the magazine has been receiving within the three short years we have been publishing. Printing a magazine can be a daunting road to choose, but it’s a rewarding one. The people, places, and events we have been blessed to be a part of have made the journey worthwhile. This season features Josh Henderson from E! Entertainment’s hit show The Arrangement gracing the men’s side with a relaxed and laid back sense of dignity and refinement. Freeform Network’s Pretty Little Liars Shay Mitchell brings her talents to Lapalme as she poses for photographer Mike Rosenthal for the women’s side of the magazine. Both of these amazing talents are perfect for our Spring issue; They know the value of always pushing onward and upward in their personal and professional lives and being a role model for others to aspire to. As Lapalme Magazine continues on into 2017 I hope to bring you more enthralling, educational and entertaining articles and features. From fast cars and great kicks, to one of a kind travel destinations; Life is meant to be lived and experienced... So let’s get out there and live it!

THE HOSHINOYA TOKYO REDEFINING THE URBAN ESCAPE

Written By Kevin LaPalme @kevinlapalme

Located in the middle of the fasted paced Otemachi financial district lies an unparalled immersive cultural experience. Billed as Tokyo’s first “luxury ryokan” the Hoshinoya Tokyo brings the best elements of the traditional ryokan to the modern era. For the layman, a Ryokan is a traditional Japanese styled inn that offers a cultural immersion experience. With 84 rooms over 17 f loors, the Hoshinoya is incredibly quiet and classy. From the inspiring entryway where you are greeted by the hotels kimono-clad staff, you are instructed to remove your shoes which the staff stores inside a bamboo locker disquised as an immense art installation.

7

Each floor is designed with six spacious rooms centered around the Ochanoma-lounge where attendents care for your every need. From tea, miso soup, sake or even delicious ramen for the late night cravings. The warmth of the interior design elements and the attentive nature of the staff make the hotel feel like its your own private space. The spacious room decor is a mix of modern design and traditional Japan. The hotel had the forethought to add the conveniences of plush mattresses and pillows, bluetooth speakers, mood lighting and an awe inspriring bath and shower. Within the room is an armoire with guest Kimono’s. Instructions on the proper wearing of the attire is also included as traditional garb is encouraged within the Hoshinoya. If you choose to head out on the town, Geta (shoes for your Kimono) are provided.

8

The highlight of the hotel, the open-air onsen is located within the 17th floor. It’s the areas first natural hot-spring bath. There are separate rooftop spaces for each gender, each enclosed by towering walls that reach to the open sky. The water comes from a well deep within the earth and is rich in therapeutic minerals. The onsen is open 20 hours a day to allow you to bathe while taking in the starry nights. Rising to the traditional Japanese breakfast was definitely an experience to behold. At the Hoshinoya, it’s all about presentation. The morning meal is prepared and placed within a bento box with fish, tamagoyaki (a Japanese rolled omelette), yuba (tofu skin), seaweed, miso soup, and steaming hot rice, plus flan and fruit.

If you have time for an innovative take on cuisine, There’s a 10-table FrenchJapanese restaurant in the basement. The courses are paired with traditional Sake’s from the region as well as locally sourced vegetables and fish. The level of Japanese etiquette and attentiveness given by the hotel is essential to creating the experience. I spoke with a few members of the staff that actually moved to Tokyo from the United States just to be a part of the Hoshinoya. The Hoshinoya Tokyo gives visitors an unparalleled cultural experience that didn’t exist before. At the end of a long day of pounding the pavement in one of the busiest cities in the world, it’s a real joy to come back and relax in a place so serene. www.hoshinoyatokyo.com

TANTALIZED IN TOKYO A WEEKLONG ESCAPE INTO ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES... Written By: Dawn Garcia @dawngarcia Photos By: Dawn Garcia

Japan is a land where tradition, culture, respect, innovation and etiquette flourish. This January, we flew in on Japan Airlines as guests of the Tokyo Convention & Visitors Bureau to explore Tokyo. A city known as one of the most intriguing in the world, Tokyo is a cultural dichotomy of rich history, architectural beauty, fare that has been passed down from generation to generation contrasted with technology overload, modern cuisine to make you salivate and ponder, nightlife that will draw you in and polarizing opposites everywhere around you. It’s a city that unravels in stages as you happily navigate your way through it. With only five days and four nights to explore, we hit the ground running … literally! While there is so much to talk about and do, we wanted to give you the breakdown on where we slept, what we ate, where we played, and what we experienced.

10

SLEEP All great travel begins and ends with where you rest your head and we had the pleasure of discovering two very different hotels, each with their own style and theme. Cerulean Tower is located in Shibuya. Shibuya, once upon a time was the site of a castle in which the Shibuya family resided from the 11th century through the Edo period. Following the opening of the Yamanote Line in 1885, Shibuya began to emerge as a railway terminal for southwestern Tokyo and eventually as a major commercial and entertainment destination. Today, it is one of the busiest railway stations in all of Tokyo and is known as the place you go for shopping the latest fashion – and – where to be for the best nightlife! It also happens to be where the world’s most crazy crosswalk is located and if you time it just right? You’ll be in a sea of hundreds of people going six different directions. ALL AT ONCE! When it comes to traveling and hotels, every hotel has its own identity. Meant for the business traveler, Cerulean Tower is a grand hotel designed with modern architecture mixed with refined hospitality. Each room varies from small to large and while ours was on the smaller side, it was incredibly space efficient with what may easily be described as one of the most comfortable beds around. You will get one of the best nights of sleep you’ve ever had here. We stayed in a room with a spectacular view of the city streets below so every morning you could see the city before it was buzzing with crowds heading to work, shopping or grabbing a tea or coffee at a nearby cafe. At night, the view is even more spectacular as the high rises, video billboards, city lights and thousands of people flock to the streets coming from the train station, going to eat at one of the hundreds of dining

options lining every street, or escaping to one of the chic bars ranging from craft beer and whiskey to sake and wine. The hotel itself has a grand entry with beautiful floral arrangements spread throughout, a welcoming front desk and ground floor café full of fresh breads and such and then to the right of the lobby, an escalator leading to their in-house restaurant and bar that has sweeping views of the city and simple design on the second floor. The hotel also has state-of-the-art fitness room and a beautiful hotel pool that has large windows looking out into Shibuya. For guests staying on the 35th floor and above they are offered an array of options: breakfast including traditional Japanese or American breakfasts, and throughout the day, guests can attend a cocktail hour followed by tea time. Service for every guest on any floor is attentive and any requests you may have (including needing electrical adapters) are easily accommodated. CERULEAN TOWER | Shibuya-ku 26-1 Sakuragaokacho, Tokyo 150-8512, Japan www.ceruleantower-hotel.com Hoshinoya is a luxury boutique hotel that incorporates Japanese tradition with the pristine design and simplicity that are so beautiful and exquisite, it takes your breath away. Located in the neighborhood of Otemachi, Hoshinoya is authenticity redefined. Otemachi is known as the economic center of Tokyo, surrounded by wealth, innovation, tradition and history. EAT

Tokyo is abundant in cuisine. From ramen to sushi to French cuisine, there are choices everywhere. Our journey began at a local fish restaurant and the catch? You fish for your food! Literally. As you wander up and down the busy Shibuya streets, you'll find fried fish, sushi, curry ramen noodles, udon and everything in between. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of choices but you can be certain that no matter where you land, you’ll be happily fed. A few notable mentions happened throughout the city while we wandered through the various neighborhoods of Fussa, Kagurazaka, Asakusa, Shinjuku, and Chiyoda. Ishikawa Brewery is one of the oldest remaining sake plants in Tokyo. In fact, it has survived two major earthquakes and multiple generations of the Ishikawa family (still living on the property)! The Tamajiman sake made on site is full of range and flavor much like the cuisine served in their restaurant, Zougura. As for the food, our favorites at Zougura are the

pork belly, the shrimp (head on and crisped), and the udon noodles. Known as a noodle house, the broth is bursting with flavor and the handmade udon noodles are exquisite. The ingredients are locally sourced however, the surprise of the lunch was the water! As crazy as it seems, the water, taken from their well is full of crisp flavor and is delicious! Tofu-ya Ukai, once a bowling alley, was purchased and built into a traditional Japanese restaurant mirroring the times of Edo, nearly 200 years before. With views of the Tokyo Tower, guests dine in traditional private rooms (and yes, you have to remove your shoes!). Red laquer adorns each room and once you take a seat on the floor cushions, the meal is underway. This meal is nine courses and the most prominent dishes are the non-fried Tosui-tofu made in-house coated with miso, cooked rice with lily bulb and the trio of desserts.Lastly, we can’t say enough about dining at Hoshinoya, Tokyo. Chef Hamada’s fare is sheer art and it is something everyone should have the pleasure of tasting.

Throughout Tokyo you will find thousands of bars, pubs and tastings rooms. While the Japanese have adopted the French custom of enjoying an array wines, it’s their beers, sakes and crafted whiskeys and scotches that intrigued us most. While we visited a fair amount of bars, nothing was nearly as exciting as wandering through the alleys of Golden Gai, getting adventurous at Shugar Market, and sneaking a cocktail at the hardto-find, Ben Fiddich hidden away in Nishi-shinjuku. Golden Gai houses 200 bars, pubs, eateries and a whole lot of backstory. The tiny bars can hold an average of 5 guests at a time and not a single one is like the next. Once known for prostitution in the 1950’s, it quickly became the designated spot for locals to slip away and get a stiff drink or grab a beer. Each bar has its own style ranging from punk rock to jazz to bohemian and wherever you end up? You’ll never forget it. Shugar Market is a place to go to feel completely free and just have fun. A bar that serves only fruit inspired spirits, you pay one flat fee and then try as many kinds of fermented fruity drinks as you want. They also have coconut ice cream to use as a base and a slew of “shugar spirits” including fermented pomegranate, rice milk, mango, kumquat, you name it. They probably have it. You’ll laugh and enjoy every second (and the place is packed with happy drinkers)! As for Ben Fiddich, should you actually find it, here is where you’ll find cocktail slinging mixologists with rare pours of scotch, whiskey, bourbon, and even some prohibition-worthy Absinthe on drip! In its dark and sultry ambiance, Ben Fiddich is the place to go when you want to slip away, sip your drink out of vintage stemware and watch the men dressed in white suits and bow ties craft something beautiful.

PLAY& APPRECIATE Imagine seeing shrines that have been around for thousands of years whose stories most likely begin in times so ancient, it would take dedicated research to discover and then, only a short train ride away, stumbling upon a city buzzing with thousands of people dressed in suits and work attire crossing one of the most recognizable crosswalks in the world. That continual visual change of old and new is precisely why Tokyo is a city to fall in love with and the best way to see the city is to utilize their train system. Not only is it the cleanest train and subway you will ever take, it’s easy to navigate your way through it. NOTE: You won’t find any trash, graffiti or see people talking on their phones or watching videos without earphones while on the train. It’s against the rules and considered highly disrespectful. Overall, no matter what you are passionate about, Tokyo is a city that will welcome you in every way. You will find so many incredible places to shop for fashion forward design, cutting edge technology, luxury lifestyle equally balanced by traditional Japanese décor, art, and more. The contrast of culture is something that can only be described as visually stunning. While we had the pleasure of being there in between seasons, no matter when you go – and you should definitely go – be prepared to walk, to explore, to eat and drink and never be afraid to try something totally out of the norm. www.gotokyo.org/en/

PATRICK SABONGUI A Man of Many Hats Interview By: Dawn Garcia @dawngarcia

Patrick Sabongui is a name everyone should know. His passion for acting, storytelling, humanity and fearlessness is something the world – and entertainment industry – desperately need more of. We sat down to talk about the incredible body of work he’s been a part of over the span of the past couple of years and what’s ahead. From Homeland to The Flash to the new Power Rangers Reboot to writing, directing, being a father and a husband, he’s a man making things happen in the world. And it’s a good thing for the rest of us … Let’s start from the beginning: growing up in Canada speaking three languages, as one of five children, did your passion for acting begin as a young kid? If so, do you remember the moment you knew it was the way you wanted to express yourself? Growing up in a large family with supportive parents definitely had a hand in shaping me into a performer. I followed in my big brothers’ footsteps as much I could when I was young. Sometimes literally; I distinctly remember following my brothers around the house and trying to step where they stepped and walk how they walked. My two eldest brothers were in a band and I recall sitting and watching them rehearse in the basement. It wasn’t acting, but I remember thinking that I would probably be comfortable in front of an audience someday. I followed them into football, martial arts and a host of other sports; I watched them become psychologists, surgeons, musicians, law students, entrepreneurs… I watched them accomplish whatever they set their minds to. I witnessed my sister come into the world and I got to rediscover the world around me through her eyes. And all the while, it felt like my parents were there to support, encourage and pick me up when I stumbled. So I wasn’t afraid to try new things, to experiment, to push my own boundaries. For a while I thought I’d try to play pro football, or go into law enforcement, or start my own business. I started a DJ’ing company when I was about sixteen, I performed as a dancer and for a minute I thought maybe that’s what I wanted to do. In retrospect, I think being an actor was the only logical choice that would allow me to include all my interests into one career. And yes, I do remember the exact moment I decided to try my hand at acting. I was enrolled in Ms. Myrianthis’ tenth grade dance class - I had been dancing and performing in since seventh grade. For whatever reason, a friend and had I skipped class that day. Apparently, I wasn’t skilled enough at playing

16

hooky, though, the Vice Principal caught us in the hallway halfway through the period. When he asked why I wasn’t in class my reflex was to lie (or act, as I call it now), I told him I was not comfortable being the only boy in the dance program anymore, that I wanted to switch into something else. Without skipping a beat he said, “I totally understand. Would you prefer transferring in to Mr. Cohen’s acting class?” That was the moment it all made sense. I thought, “Hell yeah. I bet I would do well in that world.” Apparently, I was on to something. When you got the role on Homeland, playing the role of Reda Hashem, what are some of your favorite episodes? And, knowing how familiar everyone is with the characters of the show, was there any part of you that was a little nervous to tackle it? It’s hard to pick a favorite episode. The story is woven together so tightly that it’s hard to pick just one. Some of my favorite moments happen in the interview room in the prison when Carrie and Reda are working with Sekou. We filmed those scenes early on in the process. So on top of getting to discover the characters and the story and to dig in to the social implications of the topic, Claire, J Mallory and I were also in the process of discovering one another. There was also something about being in an actual, functioning prison that was immersive. It’s as if all those elements charged those scenes somehow, I think it came across in the final product. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous about tackling this role. I think any creative endeavor worth undertaking should be on the edges of your comfort zone. I appreciate how well established Homeland and its characters are, and I was even more conscious of the reputation the show has for confronting very controversial issues. The show has come under a lot of justified criticism for portraying Muslims and visible

minorities as threats. I welcomed the opportunity to participate directly in that conversation. What can you tell us about your role on the new Power Rangers reboot? There’s not much I can say. But I am excited about being part of such an incredible franchise. I play the dad of one of the Rangers, I think it’s cool that we get to explore their home life a little.

As a fan of the Flash, we love Captain David Singh and now that news of Season Four has been renewed, any new surprises in store? Great question. And thanks. I love Captain Singh, too! If there are any surprises next season, they’ll be surprises to me, too. With a background in writing, directing, and acting, what projects haven’t you worked on that you’d like to see come to life or be a part of? I never want to stop growing as a

storyteller, artist and activist. Our world needs more stories that offer hope, that explore important issues and that challenge our basic understanding of the human condition. I’m hoping to direct more, to finish a couple of feature film scripts I’ve been working on and to continue to help produce projects by people I believe in and stories that inspire me.

be surprised to learn about my background as a stuntman. Having come from the theater world where you have to learn the physical skills your character has, it was a natural progression for me to want to continue to do my own fights and action. That skill set developed into a stunt career for a long time while my acting career continued to evolve.

What is something fans would be surprised to know about you? Now that I’m recognized as an actor some fans may

Reading the story about what prompted your wife’s project, “The Prince”, addressing Islamophobia, it’s a compelling look at society. It’s admirable to create a more beautiful dialogue through artistic expression. What have been some of the more inspiring stories you’ve encountered since the project began? Part of the genius of this short film is that it doesn’t try to solve the problem of Islamophobia and other forms of discrimination. It raises the question- opens up the conversation and as you say, proposes to create a more beautiful dialogue. It also poses the question, what is the artist’s social responsibility in the face of social injustice? Some of the most inspiring moments that have come out of this project are the personal stories that people have shared with us. Many of our collaborators and people who have seen the film relate to being discriminated against- being the victim of intolerance is not an experience reserved for Muslims (or people perceived as being Muslim). All sorts of people are discriminated against every day for a lot of different reasons- in explicit, violent conflicts or in subtle, underhanded ways. Many people who identify as part of “minority” and/or “fringe” communities have shared their personal horror stories with us. The universality of the message contained in the film tells me that Kyra has penned and directed a film that speaks to a fundamental truth about living in today’s divided world. Now as a father seeing first-hand the way the world is, the misconceptions and onslaught of misdirected hate, what have been some of the things you teach your children to help them understand it all? I’m not sure I understand it all, and that’s part of what I try to impart to them. I mean, the world is in turmoil – answers that make sense are hard to come by. I know hate and intolerance- no matter where it’s aimed- is misdirected. As a family we talk about race, religion, politics and how they’re all man-made constructs. We try to teach them that all human beings are more similar than we are different. We actively try to include our kids in the discussion. More than anything, I think it’s important to teach them to think critically, to question the world around them, to challenge unjust policies, laws and authority. By bringing them into the conversation I’m hoping they’ll find solutions that have thus far eluded our generation and that they’ll have the confidence in their own unique voices to speak out and stand up. One thing is for certain, Patrick’s passion is apparent in everything he does and we can’t wait to see more of what’s ahead … Instagram @patricksabongui

GETTING HUNGRY WITH FOUNDER, LAWRENCE LONGO

We’ve all heard someone order something at a restaurant realizing they weren’t ordering from the same menu we were and when that dish arrives at their table, We find ourselves salivating in envy because we had NO idea that dish was even an option. So? For those of us food lovers who crave something totally different, we have a newfound BFF by way of an app. The mobile app? “OFF THE MENU”. The purpose? To get everything you ever wanted that you didn’t even know you needed. While it may be a project that started over twelve years ago when a girl at a nearby table at Spago’s ordered a salmon pizza, thousands of meals later it’s become a labor of love that happily feeds the hearty hunger of food savants and influencers everywhere. Off the Menu is a free mobile app that allows users to search for restaurants by name or city, even typing in an ingredient you want to try, and then get recommendations on secret dishes that aren’t on the menu. It’s an app designed for the adventurous diner and anyone who wants to be in the know. To understand the fascination and lure of being able to order from a secret menu at your favorite high end or local restaurants, you first must start at the beginning of where the passion for Off the Menu stems from. Born in Toronto, when founder Lawrence Longo was growing up, he was raised by Italian women that could cook.

20

In fact, he jokes that he has yet find a meatball sandwich that rivals his grandma’s and is on a quest to find it. He admits that to this day he has yet to cook himself a meal and eats out every day. When he lived in Toronto, his favorite restaurant growing up was “California Sandwiches”. They’re known for making the best Italian sandwiches around. “Every Saturday, I’d ask my dad to take me to there [California Sandwiches]. It was the foreshadowing of my future! Ironic that I ended up coming to California hoping to find a meatball sandwich that as good as my grandma’s! I still haven’t found it but I’ve come close …” This began as a simple exploration for Longo. He’d go out to eat and start asking questions, taking notes and gathering enough intel on the secret menus around town. With ties in Hollywood, a background in social media marketing and a serious hunger to share his findings, his friend Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars and our cover model) encouraged him to start Off the Menu. Longo decided to bring it to life and in turn developed a hugely successful platform. Off the Menu has taken on many forms from developing a TV Show to then deciding to do their two-minute YouTube Series hosted by Longo, but it’s his interactive mobile app that remains at the heart of it all.

Off the Menu is a culinary journey through Los Angeles, the US, Canada and beyond all in hopes of finding that next great “secret” dish. It’s something that will impress your guests, keeping you up-to-date on the next great dish, inviting you to be more daring than you realized you wanted to be. As for Founder, Lawrence Longo - aka @bigshot, he can be found dining out all around Los Angeles, usually with someone beau-

tiful or famous. He’ll be the one asking for something strangely intriguing! You also might find him hanging out with his Hollywood pals playing in their hockey league (it also happens to be where the LA Kings practice). As for what’s next for Longo? Let’s just say I have a BIG SECRET about what he’s about to embark on with Off the Menu and it’s good … so good in fact? I can’t wait until he tells you!

We took a little time to browse through the secret menus and wanted to share 3 of our favorites (ok, maybe we spent more than a little time on it!).

We asked Lawrence what some of the strangest things he’s had and what his frequent “off the menu” stops are. Here’s what he has to say:

PORTLAND Portabello Vegan Trattoria | Cashew Cream Pizza | $10 – Marinara sauce with cashew cream and basil.

UNUSUAL: The Way Back Burger: Oreo Mud Pie Cricket Shake (with actual crickets!)

JOSH HENDERSON REINVENTING THE MODERN MAN The small town turned Hollywood hunk talks about staying humble and hard working.

By Jessica Finn @jessicafinnnyc

White button-down shirt with lightning bolts by AllSaints, Olive denim by Michael Stars, and leather strap watch by Coach. Buckle dress shoes by Joseph Abboud.

Josh Henderson is the kind of guy you want to have in your world. From small town beginnings the actor, singer, songwriter and all around solid guy shows how humbleness and a hard work ethic can serve you well in the bright, often unforgiving lights of Hollywood. The native Texan sat with LaPalme and touches on everything from those often spoken about but never seen Hollywood marriage contracts, the pitfalls of becoming a man in show business, the seemingly insurmountable difficulties of finding love as an actor, and why he’s rooting for fellow Texan Rachel Lindsay on the Bachelorette. He started small, and that made him big. Born in a little town called Sunnyvale thirty miles east of Dallas, Josh grew up in his grandmother’s house whom he affectionaltly called Mima. “I had planned on playing baseball for a living, and it would have been a tough road. Not that the entertainment business isn’t. But I never saw this as a living, my real dad was a baseball player, and my mom was a softball player, this opportunity with Popstars came up, and I thought- maybe.” The Popstars, a performance competition show where Josh was labeled as having a voice like Justin Timberlake, spun into more substantial opportunities . After a playing a series of roles as a teenager while Josh was in his early twenties, he landed the role that sounded the alarms for his true calling, acting. “I will never forget in 2005 I was cast in Fx’s show Over There. It was about the war in Iraq and the war was ongoing at the time, it was an incredible show. His role was a 20 year old Texan who goes to the war. He would eventually lose his leg and become an amputee, and everyone knew that that story was so real to tens of thousands of Americans at that time. When they called me for the role I was like ‘Crap I have to do this now.’ I got scared, I thought how do I push myself to get there? I showed up to set and started driving in emotionally to the soldiers I met beforehand, and thought finally; oh my God this is what I’m supposed to do. I CAN do this. And that was twelve years ago. I got the confidence from that role for my career.” Fast forward to present day Josh Henderson and you see a confident man on screen.

Josh Is on E!’s new scripted show The Arrangement. Warning: It’s addictive. Even better? It’s about Hollywood’s best worst kept secret; contract relationships. “I understand the initial comparisons to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s relationship and the Scientology tie-in.” The show focuses on a relationship between Josh’s charecter Kyle West, the handsome superstar, and his girlfriend, a relatively unknown actress Megan Morrison played by Christine Evangelista. More over there is a sort of Scientology-esq self help organization as a sub-plot called The Higher Mind that draws comparisons. But the similarities stop there says Josh. “The show is unique, Tom was alot older than Katie, and Katie was famous in her own right. It’s a show about contract marriages and of course no one knows for sure if they were in one.” What we do know, however about Hollywood’s infamous penchant for contract marriages is explained perfectly by Josh; “Studios would do it back in the day to promote leading men and women. I don’t know if they’re still around for sure. But one thing’s certain, if they are the only people that really know it are in one.” Josh doesn’t come off as a person who would necessarily be involved in a contract marriage, but as history has shown maintaining a relationship as a working actor or actress is difficult to say the least. “I’m single” Josh says wistfully before adding “being in this industry and being a visible part of it makes it tough. I’m shooting a show six months out of the year or out of the country. I’m a relationship guy, and I like being in them. You want to make sure that the person you want to be with wants to be with you and not the person on TV.” The being on TV part is usually the most challenging, but curious to know what he thought about another fellow Dallas native- who also is looking for love- but actually on TV, we had to ask about the next Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay.

On Opposite Page: Grey and black striped tee by The Kooples, grey denim by AllSaints and black dress shoes by Joseph Abboud.

“I am wishing her the best. She seems smart and funny, down to earth and super genuine, plus she’s the first African American in the role which is great.” All is not lost for Josh in his own quest for love, his sense of the future is clear and focused. “Over the past few years I’ve really matured. Life is flying by. We don’t live forever, and now at 35 I want to have the stability and focus on life things. I can’t wait to be a dad and have a family. The money and career is secondary to family, and its about accepting that.”

ISLAND ADVENTURES Kona:The Big Island Written by Derek Warburton @derekwarburton Photos by Big Island Productions

"every great beach deserves a great hotel" Laurance S. Rockefeller 40

This March our Creative Director Derek Warburton and our publicist Matt Dillon took off on an island adventure to Kona a.k.a. the big island, in Hawaii. They were lavished in comfort thanks to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. Founded in 1965 by Laurance S. Rockefeller, the Hotel overlooks white sandy beaches on the Kohala Coast. The perfect destination for some r&r. In his own words Derek describes how the friends had the time of their lives.

First off, Hawaii seemed like a far off land to me. Being an east coaster born and bred, quick trips to the islands meant Bahamas or to the Caribbean. But since moving to Los Angeles two years ago my perspective has changed. When Matt (Lapalme magazine's publicist and my bff) asked me if I wanted to go on an adventure it felt unreal when he said it was only a 4.5 hour flight to Kohala Coast. After a quick jaunt and a few cocktails later we were landing on the volcanic paradise. The first thing I noticed, with all of the traveling i do, was the outdoor airport. I knew this was going to be the most relaxing time of my life. You feel how laid back it was in the air. The fabulous team from Speedi Shuttle picked us up in a private van. Our driver, who turned out to be an incredible tour guide gave us the 411 on the entire island, how there were multiple climates on just the 1 island. Plus as many know Hawaii is filled with active volcanoes and we were educated on the lava. On the 30 minute drive from the airport to Mauna Kea Beach hotel it felt like we were on the set of a ski-fi film with all of the different lava formations. It was a cool and educational ride. When we pulled in to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, the drive way was sprawling green. To go from lava to this was something i had never seen before. The colors were electric. When we exited Speedi Shuttle and said our

goodbyes, we were welcomed with a hug. The staff at the Mauna Kea was all love. One of my greatest pleasures in my travel life is when you walk in and the staff know your name. First impression of the hotel? Casual, mid century elegance. The first thing i did was walk to the open terrace and let out a deep breath. This was our home for a week. I couldn't believe the beach. The whitest sand i had ever seen. You can read all you want online and in travel guides, but to see it is to believe it. Mauna Kea has the "wow" factor. When i was escorted to my suite we walked through the open courtyard with fountains and koi ponds. It reminded me of Bal Harbour in Miami and i love anything that reminds me of good shopping. When they opened the door to the suite and i walked to the terrace I couldn't believe the view of the sprawling property. Enchanting is the only word that could describe it. The open shower, the electric orange towels and the closet was enormous. That is my idea of luxury. Matt and I met up an hour later, in full island gear. I was layered with the chestnut necklaces they give on arrival, plus a few of my own along with my flowing floral top. We strolled through the property and down to the beach bar. Before i go any further, i am going on record to say that i

am not a foodie, never have been. But the fresh mahi mahi tacos. HONEY, the tacos. I couldn't get enough. Plus for all of you "rose' all day" people they have one of my favorite wines, Miravel. Right on the beach. We had a long leisurely lunch and a dip in the ocean. Perfect afternoon. That evening we had a gorgeous dinner on property at Manta with the Mauna Kea Hotels publicist Vicky Kometani. They pride themselves on their farm to table concepts. They do as much as they can locally. You can taste the freshness in every morsel. Between the relaxation and the amazing massages we received from the on property Mandara Spa we partook in some fun activities around the island. On our second day on Koa we had the privilege of joining Ocean Sports for a fun filled afternoon of whale watching, snorkeling and cruising around the island. We couldn't have had a better experience. We met some fun people and laughed all afternoon. What is amazing about Ocean Sports is how cheeky the staff is. The team makes it a community experience that you will never forget! We saw a few whales and by the end of the day, after quite a few cocktails and a lot of sun we crashed back at the hotel for a low key night. One thing to know about me is that i am terrified of heights! TERRIFIED, which made the next adventure all the more fulfilling. Matt announced to me that we were going on a helicopter ride around the island. I have never been on a helicopter. I have been on small planes of course but never out in the open like that. Blue Hawaiian Helicopters hosted us for the day and made it a total blast. We sat in the front of the helicopter and when we took off i was holding on for dear life! I wanted to be sick... for the first 15 minutes. Then once the shock of getting into the air and being exposed (it was all glass) like that wore off, it was unreal. It felt like we could touch the lava coming out of the live volcanos. Our tour took us across the island and over the coast where live lava was shooting into the ocean. I have never seen natural beauty like that in my life. Then to make the ride even more engaging for us the captain made a special landing. We were flying through the green mountains where we came across a waterfall and we made a pit stop at the base of it. We were enchanted with how incredible the site was. Being city dwellers we never realize how stunning nature can be. After an hour of flying around Koa we felt like pro's and can't wait to get into a helicopter again. I never take for granted how blessed my life is, but I am always the first one who can't wait to come home, but for the first time in my life, I didn't want to leave. We felt so at home. After hugs, kisses and selfies with our new hotel family, we were so sad to leave our new paradise home. TAHJ MOWRY Mogul in the Making Interview By: Dawn Garcia

Tahj Mowry may be a face you’ve seen or heard on some of your favorite TV shows, but he’s also making waves in entertainment on the whole. Tackling all forms of the industry, Tahj is doing more than a few gigs. Whether steeped into the world of music, acting, voice acting or dancing, he plans to spend his life sharing his art with the world. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a mother who would eventually become his manager and a father who is a police officer and war veteran, he grew up with his twin sisters, Tia and Tamera Mowry, and younger brother Tavior. Surrounded in love and support, Tahj has had a mind for creativity since very early on. Beginning an acting career at the tender age of four, it was clear he had something to say. With an upbeat voice and some serious dance moves, there is an energy to him that is compelling. We caught up with Tahj about his inspiration and his message … Now that you’ve decided to incorporate your music career, what are you working on? I’m currently working on my debut album. I have been writing it since last summer. I’m writing and co producing the entire project and can’t wait for people to see this side of me.

Jackson for sure. She is one of my main musical / dance inspirations so to be able to dance alongside her and create with her would be a true honor! I’d also love to work with Tinashe, Missy Elliot, Mark Ronson and James Blake, just to name a few.

Growing up with your sisters, was it fun being able to work together? Did you guys tease each other on set? We didn’t really tease each other on set – we saved that that was for at home, lol, but it’s always a blast to work with my sisters because it’s not work at all. We are very natural to begin with because we are siblings so there is true magic when we are all on screen at the same time.

What are some of your favorite family memories that might surprise some people? My family is very loud wen we are all together and I love it! It’s very high energy at our dinner table but some of my favorite memories would be my brother and I constantly telling Tia and Tamera to stop singing Celine Dion at the top of their lungs all day and every day! They were huge Titanic and Celine fans so we heard them belting high notes a lot!

Who inspires you in today’s world? My dad inspires me daily. He’s the hardest working man I know and I am constantly learning from him! I’ll never stop looking up to my dad and I’m so thankful to have a dad and an entire family that supports and loves me. My younger brother is also someone who inspires me all the time. He’s a true artist and he’s so smart and he’s also a producer/musician so we inspire each other! If you could record with anyone of your choice, who would it be? It would be Janet

44

Who would you want to act alongside if given an opportunity? Will Smith, The Rock, Viola Davis or Meryl Streep! What’s your go-to when you need to feel grounded? I spend a lot of time with the man upstairs, my faith is very important to me and that consistently keeps me grounded. My friends and family as well. I don’t surround myself with “yes people,” so my friends and my family constantly

keep me grounded and let me know if I’m ever actin’ up! I think it’s important to have people around you who keep it real and are there for you and your well-being, I’m very thankful that I have that! What’s your ultimate dream? My ultimate dream is to just be able to give all of myself in this entertainment industry, to leave it all on the table. I’d like to be remembered as one of the greatest entertainers of my time. I have a lot to give and a lot to accomplish and I’m never comfortable and I’m never going to stop. I feel like I’ve somewhat conquered the TV world and would love to do the same with music and film! I want to challenge myself constantly! I feel like I am doing what God put me on this earth to do, so my goal would be to be able to give my fans, viewers and people on the whole, all of the artistic me. Music and acting complete me as an artist. I am not complete without either! I hope and pray that I will always be able to do both for the rest of my life. Making people smile, laugh, and ultimately feel something through my art is why I do what I do. I’m blessed to be able to do a job that never quite feels like work! Tahj is not only sincere but tenacious! You can catch him as Tucker on “Baby Daddy” but be on the lookout for his debut album which we hope drops very soon. Instagram @tahj_mowry

The army of owners rise before the sun and work diligently to get the details just right before the mass of car fans across the globe descend to gaze upon their pride and joy. The 18th fairway was loaded with cars of every vintage imaginable. Each one was easily accessible as the proud owner told the tAle of its origin and history. The McLaren 720S debuts as the second-generation Super Series car and replaces the McLaren 650S and 650S

Spider in just about every facet. The power for the engine 720S is derived from a new twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces a very healthy 710hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. The M840T engine is 41 percent new and the transmission continues to be a seven speed dual-clutch with all torque directed to the rear wheels. The lightweight properties of the new 720S starts with the McLaren Monocage II. Carbon fiber and its lightweight properties are a cornerstone at McLaren Automotive and its carbon fiber tub and its upper structure provides superior torsional rigidity throughout the entire structure without sacrificing any unnecessary weight. The 720S features an instrument cluster that, in addition to changing to different displays in different modes, it also quietly slides itself away into the dashboard when the car is put into Track mode, leaving a narrow screen that displays only speed, current gear, and a minimalist tachometer. McLaren has moved the game forward in 2017 with this machine. The large amount of hours spent within a wind tunnel with aerodynamicists is readily apparent as it appears every inch of the exterior was shaped by the wind. Finished in metallic white, the McLaren 720S was fitted with just about every carbon fiber option from the company’s extensive portfolio. The new McLaren 720S will be available in three different levels of specification according to driver needs: Standard, Performance, and Luxury. Treat yourself a text drive, get in, fire it up and hear that engine roar, its a game changer.

DESTINATION PALM SPRINGS DESIGN MODERNISM WEEK By: Karen LeBlanc @designtourist

Palm Springs, in its hey day, was the desert playground for 50sera Hollywood cool kids and the cradle of an emerging style of postwar architecture known as modernism. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Elvis Presley, Debbie Reynolds, Dinah Shore, and Bob Hope were among the celebrities and socialites seeking weekend getaway homes in the architecture de rigueur, known as Desert Modernism. Palm Springs’ many public and commercial buildings also embraced this midcentury modern lexicon championed by architects including Albert Frey, Donald Wexler, John Lautner, Richard Neutra, William Krisel and George and Robert Alexander. Known as “StarArchitects” of their time, collectively, they produced a concentration of varied modernist iterations in Palm Springs, unmatched by any other U.S. city. From the futuristic works of John Lautner including Bob Hope’s spaceship estate and Lautner’s Elrod House, appearing in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever, to The International Style influences evident Richard Neutra’s glass and steel Kaufmann House or his protege, Donald Wexler’s prefab Steel House, modernism in the California desert morphed into its own expression that drinks in the arid and mountainous landscape.

Emblematic of the style is modernist master Albert Frey’s personal residence, the Frey House II, built in 1963 on the side of the mountain with sweeping views of Palm Springs. The Swiss born architect, a protege of Le Corbusier, designed his corrugated steel roof residence with a large boulder embedded in the interiors. One of Frey’s earliest works, The Aluminaire House, is relocating to Palm Springs, where Frey lived and worked from 1935 until his death in 1998. Frey and architect A. Lawrence Kocher designed the three-story house as a case study, building it in just ten days as the first all-metal prefabricated house in the U.S. In an act of preservation, The Aluminaire House was dismantled and transported from its original site in New York City to Palm Springs where it will be open to the public. Once a year, Palm Springs celebrates its architectural treasures and a reverence for retro in an 11-day festival known as Modernism Week, drawing midcentury modern fans and a new generation of hipsters, architecture aficionados and design enthusiasts discovering the architectural vocabulary of cantilevered construction, rectilinear planes and walls of glass and steel. Modernism Week, held February 16-26, 2017, highlights midcentury modern architecture, art, interior style, landscape design and vintage culture in Palm Springs with tours of iconic homes throughout Coachella Valley including architectural walking, biking and double-decker bus tours. The event also hosts film screenings, talks and the annual Palm Springs Modernism Show & Sale. During Modernism Week, several showhomes swing open their doors to the public including the Christopher Kennedy Compound at Villa Golightly, a decorator showcase featuring twenty of the nation’s most prominent tastemakers creating uniquely designed rooms. The West Elm House, a 1958 renovated home designed by architects Dan Palmer and William Krisel, became a “living showroom” designed to inspire and guide in the art of modernizing a midcentury home for 21st century living.

Bob Hope Estate by architect John Lautner

Also on tour, the Social House, a concept space set in a newly completed Desert Eichler home, a modernized version of an original Eichler house designed by Claude Oakland. Celebrity designer Bobby Berk collaborated with furniture company Carl Hansen & Son on the interior styling featuring heritage midcentury furnishings, contemporary art, accessories, and design objects. If you missed Modernism Week, not to worry, many of the city’s celebrated midcentury modern properties remain on tour. On the must-see list is the “Movie Colony” neighborhood, home to Rat Pack era celebrities including Frank Sinatra who commissioned architect E. Stewart William to design and build his Twin Palms estate in 1947. Sinatra’s party pad and weekend getaway has a pool shaped like a baby grand piano and few dings on the walls from fights during his tumultuous marriage to Ava Gardner. Celebrity curb appeal also includes the postwar modernist homes of Tony Curtis, Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Al Jolson, Dinah Shore, Van Johnson, Gloria Swanson and Jack Benny and it appears that a new generation of Hollywood celebs are discovering Palm Springs’ midcentury modern charm. Leonardo DiCaprio recently purchased the former home of Dinah Shore, designed by Wexler in 1964 with clean lines and glass walls. Working with JUST Putting A DROP People First LAPALME Creative Director, Derek Warburton has just been honored as the Goodwill Ambassador of Just A Drop, an international clean water organization. In his own words, Derek talks of his mission trip to Nicaragua and Just a Drops efforts to bringing clean water and sanitation to the millions suffering worldwide.

My work with Just a Drop has been one of the most humbling experiences of my life. When I landed in Managua on Feb 23rd, I didn’t know what to expect. I found a country of people who are filled with soul but alsowith boundless poverty. I grew up homeless, dug sewers and had no electricity or water. But because I lived in America, water was easy to get. Many in the rural communities have no such luxury. Women walk miles a day, multiple times for a single bucket of clean water. There are no bathrooms or clean form of sanitation and they are forced to live in squalor.

It took everything I had to keep my emotions together as we toured site to site. I wanted to cry but I owed them my dignity. The communities I encountered with their little schools were filled with hope. Everyone we encountered thanked us for blessing them with love and our support in helping them. How can I insult their aspirations with pity tears. I had to give them the hopefulness they deserve. On my second day 50 miles outside of Managua in the rural outback of Nicaragua the team from Just A Drop and I were brought to a community of 60 families. No clean water for

miles, rough sanitation but in the center of their settlement was a little school. The faces were bright. They know no other life than a bucket in the back of a building with clean water. They washed their hands in it and drank from it. In the school there were two children that were paraplegic. A brother and sister. My heart sank. Until that time in the day I was concerned about the hotel, the bumpy ride and wanting to use a proper bathroom. But in that moment those two children made me realize that what I was worried was small compared to their struggles. Their joy, optimism and strength stopped me in my tracks. How can I complain, even internally. Not only are they living in strife but to have a physical handicap. What chance do they have? What is going to happen to them as they grow older? Those children have stayed with me since, and always will. I did my best to keep composure for the rest of the trip. These tears have made my commitment to working with Just a Drop all the stronger. With all of my luxuries and the blessed existence I have, I will strive to help others in need. It will be my life’s work to give back, to love and honor those who are less fortunate. I hope to open the hearts of as many people as I can to aid those living without clean water. I am an American and I am blessed with that privilege, but as a citizen of the world, I hold that honor just as dear. For more information or to donate, visit justadrop.org.Â

CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE AMELIA ISLAND

For the automotive aficionado, the blue skies and cool weather set the stage for a weekend of new and classic car adoration. The planning of both the laid back atmosphere of Cars & Coffee and the elegant sophistication of the Concours D’Elegance going on simultaneously was literally the best of both worlds. For the first time, There was a new motor class at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance; Movie Cars. By Darryle Moody @darryle_moodynm Photos Courtesy of Darryle Moody unless otherwise credited.

The 007 Aston martin DB5 - One of the most iconic rides in cinematic history, James Bond’s 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that Sir Sean Connery first piloted in Goldfinger (1964). Who didn’t envision themselves in a car chase with an iconic Bond villain wearing that beautiful Savile Row suit with the baddest three digit code name in cinematic history, 007? Equipped with bullet proof windows, revolving number plates, with a passenger ejection seat and machine guns behind the headlights it isn’t surprising this Aston Martin left a lasting impression on movie goers for generations. The kings BMW507 Roadster - Also making an appearance via BMW Classic was Elvis Presley’s BMW 507 roadster that was the featured car in the 22nd annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance BMW 500 class. Elvis leased and took delivery of his 507 roadster on December 28, 1958 during his service in the US Army while stationed in Germany. The Feather White roadster suffered at the hands, or in this very particular case, the lips of his most ardent female fans. Many of them kissed the white roadster with scarlet lips. Many wrote amorous messages in lipstick. Private Presley finally surrendered to his those of f male fans and had the 507 painted lipstick red. After many years, the car was eventually sold car back to BMW, who would then restore it just how the King envisioned it, Feather White. The amount of detail in this ground-up restoration was evident in the bright Florida sun as well as the breadth and depth of the technical abilities of BMW Group Classic. Of the 253 BMW 507’s produced just 39 of the roadsters were imported to North America and Fewer than 200 are said to survive.

RECOMMENDED READS Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men: An Utterly Invigorating Guide to Being Your Most Masculine Self By Stephen Mansfield, William Boykin (Nelson, Thomas Inc. $11.64)

Witty, compelling, and shrewd, Mansfield’s Book of Manly Men is about resurrecting your inborn, timeless, essential, masculine self.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

By Mark Manson (Harpers Collins Publishers $14.03) For decades, we’ve been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. “F**k positivity,” Mark Manson says. “Let’s be honest, shit is f**ked and we have to live with it.” In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn’t sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is—a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F**k is his antidote to the coddling, let’s-all-feel-good mindset that has infected American society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

The Western world is in a crisis of discarded honor, dubious integrity, and faux manliness. It is time to recover what we have lost. Stephen Mansfield shows us the way. Working with timeless maxims and stirring examples of manhood from ages past, Mansfield issues a trumpet call of manliness fit for our times.

Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance By Angela Duckworth (Scribner $17.50)

Pioneering psychologist Angela Duckworth shows anyone striving to succeed—be it parents, students, educators, athletes, or business people—that the secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but a special blend of passion and persistence she calls “grit.” She takes readers into the field to visit cadets struggling through their first days at West Point, and teachers working in some of the toughest schools. She also mines fascinating insights from history and modern experiments in peak performance, sharing what she’s learned from interviewing dozens of high achievers—from JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon to New Yorker cartoon editor Bob Mankoff to Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll.
