ou may have noticed for a few months now that Your Family has been including some inspirational crafts on the cover of the magazine, highlighting the best of what’s inside. Our September issue is no exception as we showcase a beautiful sheer wrap top made by Phillipa Meintjes against our pretty spring flower backdrop. The team was a little stunned when I asked them to help me cut out and assemble over 500 paper flowers in varying shades of purple in the middle of winter, but the gorgeous result is a vibrant and versatile floral backdrop that you can use to beautifully offset a party table adding instant, and, it must be said, very affordable floral flair to your celebration. Afterwards you can hang it from a wall to frame your teen’s bed, or use it to add some privacy to a hard-to-dress window – the possibilities are endless. There are plenty more homages to spring in this issue, from exciting new nail colours and beautifully cut skirts to pep up your wardrobe, to meals that look after your heart and salads that’ll make a refreshing change from the heavy comfort meals of the colder months – there’s so much to look forward to! In health and relationships we look at how kids’ obesity problems can be tackled (no fad diets here!), uplifting ways to pull yourself out of that mom rut, seven reasons why ageing is NOT such a bad thing, and how to fight fair with your spouse. It’s also time to say good luck (but not goodbye) to Lauren Fischer and Margie Els-Burger as they embark on motherhood – we can’t wait to see the new additions to Our Family! Happy reading

WHEN LAST DID YOUR KIDS MAKE YOU CRY WITH LAUGHTER? When my 4-year-old daughter walks through her school gates, she puts on a British accent, then when I pick her up in the afternoon she starts talking normally again! I CAN NEVER WALK PAST… Woolworths – it has everything my family needs. But I’m a bit of a shopaholic, so it’s tough to walk past most shops in fact. I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT… My family. My husband is my best friend, motivator and inspiration. My kids make me want

to keep dreaming big, then of course my mom who’s my biggest support and biggest fan. HOW DO YOU STAY ORGANISED? I take myself for coffee each morning and plan ahead. That plan is filtered through to my household, so we’re all on the same page. WHAT NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT ME IS… I pretend to be really firm, when I actually wear my heart on my sleeve. IN MY NEXT LIFE I’D LIKE TO COME BACK AS… A lawyer, as I’d like to make a difference in the lives of abused women.

Between packing lunches, dressing my son for crèche, entertaining my baby daughter at home, preparing meals, and running my tuition centre in the afternoons, I’m certainly a busy mom. While doing all of the above, I sometimes find myself feeling inadequate compared to other moms who find the time to go to the gym every day, prepare

kid-friendly meals, and keep up with their hobbies. Most of the time I think I'm doing a great job, but then ‘pop’ goes my idealism when ‘Sarah’s mom’ talks about collecting things from the garden and creating a collage as part of their activity hour after school. Your column brought a sigh of relief as I realised I’m doing the best I can. Thank you for being my constant companion in parenting and inspiration in times of doubt. – F Adam

GOING GREEN I find it so disheartening to see poor people rummaging through our bins on our pavements. To give a helping hand to these people, we could take the time to collect all our plastic items, cardboard boxes, cartons, and glass and tins, and pack them in separate garbage bags. This way, we’d firstly reduce the load on landfill sites, by helping others to earn a small income, and we’d be contributing to the recycling effort. Collectable items in our home have been reduced by 80 percent! Let's reach out to our fellow man with compassion and do something practical to enhance others’ lives. – Lynda Anne Griggs

‘I FOUND L VE IN A TROUBLED PLACE’ Some of the strongest relationships come about through great difficulty. These couples overcame the obstacles and show that love conquers all

‘SOME FAMILY MEMBERS SAID I WASN’T WELCOME IN THEIR HOMES, BECAUSE OF MY RELATIONSHIP WITH A BLACK MAN.’ Michele Stuurman, 49, met her husband Chris, 53, at work in 1990 – during the tail end of apartheid when racial sensitivities were high, and while she was in an abusive marriage. Four years later, she and Chris married and raised her two children together. ‘Chris and I met at work, and though senior management disapproved, my manager supported our relationship. He told me that to escape criticism, I needed to perform 110 percent. I had to be very professional so they could see that what I did in my private time was my business and didn’t affect my work. ‘Chris was living with his girlfriend and their children when we met, and I was in an abusive marriage with two young children. Six months later we decided to end our other relationships and be together. ‘My family gave me flak when we were first dating, and some family members said I wasn’t welcome in their homes. Even my parents were taken aback, but when my dad met Chris, he liked him. My dad was by my side through my abusive marriage, and many times I’d stay with my parents when I was too scared to go home with my kids. One day my dad said, “This is my issue, and I must get over it. He’s a good man and he’s good for you”. ‘Chris and I had two weddings – a traditional Christian church affair, and a Xhosa ceremony. I wanted us to be properly married in both of our cultures. Chris spoke to his elders, and they gave me a Xhosa name, Nozinzile, which means “settles here”. ‘It’s not always easy being in an interracial relationship, but Chris is so good with my kids. Blending families went very smoothly – my children were young, and the country was changing and more accepting. My children were very lucky that they got to experience and grow up in two cultures. ‘Chris walked my daughter Olivia down the aisle for her wedding two years ago. He’s exactly what I look for in a man – intelligent and caring.’

I’m from California and came to South Africa as a missionary for my church. I ended up working at a youth camp with Kgomotso. I found him to be really friendly, genuine and loving, and after camp we became good friends. We connected right away and found that we share the same dreams for the future. ‘I’d never dated a black man before, and if you told me five years ago that I’d marry an African man, I wouldn’t have believed you! Despite my reservations in the beginning, my family was very supportive of the relationship. They loved him right away. ‘Though our churches agreed we were well matched, certain members of my South African church weren’t quite so open and made life difficult for us – especially since we’re a tight-knit community. She’s nine now, and we also have a 7-year-old son. ‘Gary has always worked away from home; working with earth-moving equipment for the mines means you have to be on site, but it’s got more intense recently. The kids are getting quite used to greeting their dad on Friday, and saying goodbye to him on Sundays when he leaves. ‘It’s been a lot more difficult for me. I miss him so much and I’m envious of other wives who get to talk about their day to their husbands. But I remember that my kids are relying on me and I try to think about my blessings. My husband has a good job, and I have my dream house, and two wonderful children. ‘Gary is often exhausted when he comes home on Fridays, but he’ll play with the kids, feed the pets, run me a bath, and make me tea! It was very challenging at first, and we opted for Imago therapy, a form of couples counselling. Now he knows how I think, and I don’t get upset over the small things anymore. ‘I sometimes forget that Gary gets lonely during the week – he lives by himself in a small flat. I try to think from his perspective, and try to care for him how I can, by cooking and freezing his meals for the week, for example. ‘We check in with each other by messaging throughout the day and try to deal with any arguments as they come up, instead of saving them for the weekend or

We made an effort to be amicable for the sake of the children – but it wasn’t easy. Both wanting the best for our boys was what motivated us to maintain a positive relationship, which evolved into a friendship over time. ‘We dated other people, but never committed. Last year, I decided to stop holding back and commit to someone. Mark was devastated. I was surprised, because it was clear we wouldn’t be together. He said he’d fallen in love with me again and he realised what he’d lost. ‘I told him he’s always been more important to me than anyone else, and if he wanted us to be back together, I’d be there! We both stopped beating around the bush and said “I love you”. We knew that if we got back together, this was it. There was no going back. ‘We’re still living separately and have proper date nights – we never really got to “date” like this before. We don’t look at it as rekindling; we’re looking at it as a whole new relationship. I never felt butterflies with anyone else I dated after Mark, and I thought they were lost forever – until we got back together. Now I have butterflies again.’ each other, it’s just not practical to live together right now. It’s quite difficult to see each other often because we also both run our own businesses. Some weeks I won’t even see him. It’s almost like a long-distance relationship, because when we do see each other it’s very immersive and we’ll go away for the weekend or have a holiday with the kids. ‘What makes a relationship successful is a willingness to commit, not similarity to each other. We genuinely want to spend time together! We’re very different, though in a way he’s tapped into who I was as a tomboy child. His profile stated he wanted a biker chick, which I’m most certainly not! ‘He encouraged me to pluck up the courage to bungee jump at the Orlando Towers. I’ve embraced all these things and we’ll go hiking together, which I love. I feel safe with Johann, so I’m willing to try things I’d normally not, like motor biking! I felt embarrassed meeting him online, but in the greater scheme of things it makes sense. Now we laugh about it.’

OF YOUR MOM RUT It’s no surprise moms feel frustrated and locked into our roles when routine leaves so little room to move. But how can you escape the daily grind, while still getting everything done?

n Your Family’s office there’s much excitement about our first-time moms-to-be. It certainly goes without saying that being a mom tops life’s list of greatest joys. At the same time, having laboured in the intense service industry that is Motherhood for the past decade, I’m also so mindful of how you can never fully relate to an expectant mom that alongside the incredible highs, you sign a contract to something that’s vital to maintaining stability and order for the next 20 years (and more). Being locked into an unrelenting routine is such a contradiction – you can’t live without it, although occasionally you hear some enlightened new parents claim they plan to – but truthfully, how long can chaos reign? Humans like predictability. We thrive on natural rhythms like day and

night; it just works for us. Paradoxically, the mundane side threatens to destabilise your sanity frequently. And being the only one who was ever at the other end of the umbilical cord, makes you the creator and manager of the essential routine! Groundhog Day Syndrome (GDS) is something all moms develop. The daily drill is as follows – instantly snap from deep sleep to wide awake at the alarm clock’s command, orchestrate all the family’s dressing and breakfast, beat it through traffic and shove the kids out the car door to get to work on time. Be consistently effective, creative and irreplaceable at your job – be it at home or an office. Conjure an inspired, one-fits-all supper and speed-walk the supermarket, arrive at school appearing cool and collected. Facilitate extra-

murals, homework, supervise uniform and sports gear bagpacking, projects, pet feeding, dinner production and washing up – the dishes, kids and you – pack nutritious lunch boxes before switching the Wonder Mom for Wonder Wife hat when the lights go out. For many, household chores suck up a chunk of the precious weekend too. And while most of us enjoy a domestichelp break, the rest still reads like a job description for more than one appointment. Without wanting to be the martyr here, why is it that worldly wisdom assumes that all the running and stressing is bottomless and that supreme altruism comes naturally to a mom? While I love the sentiment, Mildred B Vermont clearly exhibits saintly tendencies when she wrote,

ESCAPE THE SUPERMARKET

Farmer’s markets are the flavour of the moment. Can you think of anything better than sourcing your fresh organic eggs, butter, milk, veggies and fruit out in the fresh air on a Sunday – kids happily occupied in the play area, Dad with craft beer in hand watching over – while you take your time? tip Go early to avoid the crowds. Then rely on online shopping and delivery from the likes of Picknpay.co.za for the less-exciting monthly household buys, saving your shopping list for next month. Any chiropractor will tell you, hoisting and lugging grocery bags doesn’t count as exercise! STRONGER IMMUNE SYSTEM By 40, you’ve caught just about every bug that makes its way through your child’s school, which, believe it or not, is a good thing. Dr Bruce Young, a Joburg-based GP, says, ‘Think of how many times youngsters get sick when they attend crèche. This is the first time they’ve been exposed to all sorts of new bacteria and viruses and their immune systems take time to process all of these. The next time they’re exposed to these pathogens, their immune system will respond much more quickly to the infection.’ Dr Tiny Mhinga, a GP at the NHC, says, ‘Frequent exposure helps build immunity. For example, health workers rarely get sick, because they’re exposed to every disease that walks by.’ Multiply this effect over decades, and though not invincible, by middle age your immune system will have a quick response to most pathogens and can keep you from the sniffles.

INCREASED STAMINA Look at the world’s best marathon runners – all of them are in their 30s and 40s, and not their 20s when muscles are at their peak. Dr Jon Patricios, a Joburg-based sports physician, says, ‘What happens with endurance exercise is there’s an accumulative effect. Your body has had more time to adapt to the rigours of endurance exercise as you grow older.’ This means that if you’ve been exercising regularly, your body grows stronger and allows you to better endure marathons. ‘By the time you’re in your 30s and 40s, your heart has grown

bigger, your muscle fibres are more dense, and you have more efficient energy systems.’ So you might not be able to hit the road and get through a Comrades, but if you’ve been consistently training, that 5km run won’t be as arduous.

PUZZLE SOLVING There’s a reason older people are renowned for their wisdom – their brains have physically grown and changed over time. Says Dr Young, ‘Our brains adapt to whatever stimulates them. Exercising your brain makes it better at what it does. The best example of this is London cab drivers – their brains physically change in size as they learn every single road in London.’ New research proves that brains have plasticity – meaning that brain structure and ability isn’t set in stone as was once believed. The more problems you solve, puzzles you unpuzzle, and dilemmas you work through, the more possible solutions you store for future use and the better your brain is able to deal with complications.

BETTER SEX Your best sex isn’t behind you, not by a long shot. South African sexologist Dr Marlene Wasserman, more commonly known as Dr Eve, says that older women are more sexually active, and often the only problem is finding a partner! ‘Your hormones change, and women feel liberated as they age,’ she says. ‘Without the responsibility of children and the monthly cramps in your 20s, some women will be having much better sex after menopause.’ But the 40s are the sexual peak for most women. The 30s are exhausting, with young children and a busy career. The 20s are sexually complicated with conflicting societal messages about being ‘loose’ or a ‘prude’. By the time you reach 40, you’ve shed those earlier problems and have the hormones to support a healthy sexual appetite. In fact, that’s when most women are at their sexual peak!

LESS UPKEEP Surprisingly, wrinkles aside, even your skin can be on your side as you get older. Cape Town-based dermatologist Dr Suretha Kannenberg says, ‘Your skin definitely produces less oil as the sebum glands shrink.’ The disadvantage of this is your skin can get a little drier, which means avoiding soap, but the advantage is you won’t be packing on powder to avoid shine. Even better, shaving will become a distant memory as hair thins. ‘This will probably only start having a real effect in your 50s,’ says Dr Kannenberg.

FEWER TOOTHACHES Dr Valentina Chiocci, a Pretoriabased dentist, says the one silver lining to look out for as you start to go over the hill is less sensitive teeth. ‘On the inside of your teeth is the pulp chamber, lined by dentine, which contains the nerve. As you age, the levels of dentine increase and the pulp chamber shrinks. Old people have little to no sensation in their teeth,’ says Dr Chiocci. In fact, it’s even possible to do surgery on older clients without anaesthetic! You’ll only start to feel the difference in your teeth after 50, and an ice cream with the grandchildren will be a pleasure.

LESS STRESS ‘This is true, older people experience less stress!’ says Dr Young. Research suggests that ‘stress plummets once our children leave the house’. The research was based on the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, which interviewed 650 000 people across the USA. Stress is directly proportional to age, with the oldest people interviewed describing themselves as the least stressed. Says Dr Young, ‘Stress declines with age, though these findings haven’t been explained.’ We may not know why, but it seems to be true – the older you get, the less you’re going to stress. Isn’t that something to look forward to?

However, if you want to go just a shade or two lighter or darker then it’s possible to achieve it with an at-home colour. But, before you buy you need to decide what it is you expect from your colour. Do you want it to be subtle or extreme? How long do you want it to last? How efficient are you at applying colour yourself? Be sure to choose a product that meets your needs.

3 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU REACH FOR THE DYE… 1 SKIN TONE Warm skin tones suit warmer hair colours, like golden blondes and honey browns. Cool skin tones suit cooler hair colours, like ash blonde, black or auburn brown. Unsure if your skin tone is warm or cool? Look at a vein in your arm in natural light. If it appears green, then you have a warm tone, and if it’s blue, then you have a cool tone. 2 EYE COLOUR If your eyes are deep brown, black-brown, grey-blue, or dark blue, you’ll look best with cool hair tones. If your eyes are golden brown, green, turquoise or hazel, you’ll look best with warm hair tones. 3 CONDITION OF YOUR HAIR Be sure that your hair is in good condition before you attempt to colour it, because if it’s not, it won’t colour properly. The colour will fade, be uneven, and you could even worsen the condition of your hair.

SELECT A SHADE Choosing the right shade is probably the most difficult part of hair colouring, especially when planning to do a home colour. The right shade of hair will complement your skin tone and highlight your best facial features. Get it wrong and you risk looking tired and washed out. And if you’ve coloured your hair at home before, you’ll know that the colour as it appears on the box is seldom how it turns out on your hair! Your best bet is to pick warm shades. As a rule of thumb, the softer the name, the softer the result should be. Try test dying on a little patch of your hair first, preferably where no one can see it, to see how the colour will turn out.

BEEF, BACON AND BEER POTJIE

✤ Serves 6-8 ✤ Takes 2 hrs

125ml cake flour 1.5kg beef thick rib, cut into 3cm pieces vegetable oil, for frying 250g diced bacon 3ml cayenne pepper 375ml beer or beef stock 375ml warm beef stock + extra 500g baby onions, peeled 3 potatoes, peeled and cubed 4 carrots, peeled and cut into 3cm pieces 2 handfuls green beans, tailed 410g tin chopped tomatoes 15ml sugar 2 garlic cloves, crushed handful parsley, chopped rice or bread rolls, to serve

1 Season the cake flour and dust the beef in this. Heat a splash of oil in a medium potjie pot over prepared coals and brown the beef and bacon in batches. Stir in the cayenne pepper and season. Add the beer (if using) and stock, cover and cook for about 1 hour until just tender. Add extra stock as needed. 2 Top with the onions, potatoes and carrots and cook for about 30 minutes. Top with the green beans. Mix the tomatoes, sugar and garlic together and pour over the beans. Cover and cook for about 15 minutes until tender. Sprinkle parsley over and serve with rice or bread rolls.

potjie tips ✤ Take good care of your potjie pot. Wash it thoroughly with soapy water, rinse and dry completely. Finish off by rubbing a bit of vegetable oil on the inside to help prevent rusting. ✤ When using a flat-bottomed potjie, always put it on a tripod or balance it on two bricks. Never place it directly on hot coals. ✤ Potjies are different to stews in that they’re cooked in layers (ingredients that take the longest go in first). They shouldn’t be stirred, except at the end to mix the ingredients.

Stir in the mussels, add the wine or stock, cover and cook for about 10-15 minutes until the mussels open. Top the chicken with the potatoes and apricots. 2 Mix the juice and chutney together and pour into the pot. Cover and simmer for about 45 minutes until cooked. 3 Top with the baby marrows, mushrooms and onion mixture and cook for about 25 minutes. Top with lemon zest and a squeeze of lemon juice. Season and serve with rice or bread rolls.

1 Heat the oil on medium and sauté the onion. Add the curry powder, turmeric and coriander and fry for 1 minute. Add the jam and vinegar and simmer for about 10 minutes. Allow to cool before mixing in the buttermilk (or milk). Add the lamb and leave to marinate for at least 24 hours. 2 Soak 8 bamboo skewers in water for 30 minutes. Wrap the apricots in bacon. Shake excess marinade off the meat (reserve the marinade for later). Thread the meat onto the skewers, alternating with the apricots. Braai until cooked to your liking. Season. 3 Cook the reserved marinade on low for about 10 minutes. Serve with the kebabs.

BRAAI SANDWICHES ✤ Serves 8 ✤ Takes 35 min

2 x 400g rolls puff pastry, thawed 250ml chutney 1 red onion, thinly sliced into rings 2 tomatoes, sliced 375ml Cheddar cheese, grated olive or avocado oil, for basting 1 Lay the pastry out with the wide side in front of you and cut each into 4 rectangles. Spread the rectangles with chutney. Layer the bottom halves with onion, tomatoes and cheese. Season. Fold the top halves over to enclose the filling. 2 Brush the pastry parcels with oil. Pack inside a clamp braai grid, leaving space in between. Cook over medium coals, turning frequently until golden and cooked.

125ml lemon juice 80ml brown sugar 60ml olive or avocado oil 300g fine green beans, topped and tailed 410g tin baked beans 410g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 yellow pepper, diced 4 spring onions, sliced handful cherry tomatoes, halved

200g butternut cubes, finely grated 180ml (¾ cup) soft brown sugar 2 extra-large eggs pinch of salt 250ml (1 cup) self-raising flour 5ml (1t) baking powder 15ml (1T) poppy seeds zest of 1 orange 80ml (1/3 cup) vegetable oil

1 Mix the lemon juice, sugar and oil together until dissolved. Set aside. 2 Blanch the green beans in salted boiling water for about 1 minute until bright green. Refresh in ice water then drain. Mix in the rest of the ingredients. Pour the lemon dressing over and season. Refrigerate for at least 20 minutes (preferably overnight).

FOR THE ORANGE ICING zest of 1 orange + extra 60ml (¼ cup) sour cream 375ml (1½ cups) icing sugar, sifted 1 Mix all the cupcake ingredients together. Fill 10 orange cases (see tip) halfway with the batter. Cover individually with foil and bake in medium coals (make spaces between the coals so the cupcakes don’t touch any) for about 30 minutes until cooked through. Cool. 2 For the icing, beat all the ingredients together and spoon onto the cooled cupcakes. Sprinkle extra orange zest over. oven baking You can also bake these in the oven at 180°C, covered with foil, for about 50 minutes.

15ml coriander, chopped + extra 4 garlic cloves, crushed 60ml lemon juice 10ml ground cumin 30ml fat-free Bulgarian yoghurt + extra 4 chicken breasts, butterflied 125ml wholewheat couscous, to serve 8-12 butter lettuce leaves 100g whole peeled almonds, toasted 2 spring onions, diagonally sliced handful mint, chopped

and lemon juice and add to the barley. Cool. Mix the apple with some extra lemon juice and add this to the barley mixture, along with the mint. 2 Preheat oven to 200°C. Heat a griddle pan on medium high and fry the pork until charred all over. Season. Place the fillet on a roasting tray and bake for about 15 minutes until cooked through. Rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly. 3 Scatter rocket, grapefruit, avocado, onion and sesame seeds over the barley salad. Serve with the pork.

Add the leeks. 3 Bring the lemon zest and cream to boil in another saucepan and simmer for 3 minutes. Add the lemon juice and cheese. Season. Mix through the pasta, along with some of the reserved cooking liquid if you like. Sprinkle with herbs and extra cheese before serving.

Dry-fry the bacon in a large frying pan with a lid on medium high until golden. Add the onions, garlic and peppers and sauté. Add the turmeric, cumin, rice, tomatoes and stock. Stir until well combined. Bring to boil, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the rice is just tender. Season the fish, place on top of the rice and close the lid. Steam the fish for about 10 minutes until cooked. Add the peas and cook for about 2 minutes until cooked. Stir in the parsley.

Mix the pork bangers through the apple mixture with the remaining rosemary. Transfer to the prepared dish. Pour the batter over and bake for about 8-10 minutes until fluffy and golden brown.

Preheat oven to 200°C. Place the vegetables on a baking tray and season. Drizzle with the oil and roast for about 25 minutes until cooked. Cook the couscous according to packet instructions. Toss all the ingredients through the couscous and season.

Preheat oven to 200°C. Toss the chicken pieces through the garlic and oil. Season. Place in a deep roasting tin and roast for 30 minutes. Turn the chicken, add the vegetables and oranges. Season and drizzle with oil. Roast for about 35 minutes until cooked and golden. Scatter rocket over.

Sift together the flour, nutmeg, salt and sugar. Whisk the eggs and milk together. Add to the flour mixture, together with the sour cream and bananas. Stir until a smooth batter forms. Heat a frying pan and brush lightly with oil. Pour 60ml of batter into the pan and spread the batter to form a 10cm crumpet. Cook for about 2 minutes until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip over and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown. Transfer to a plate and keep warm with a tea towel, while cooking the rest. Heat the caramel and pour over the crumpets to serve.

200g pumpkin cubes 200g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 30ml olive or avocado oil 5ml salt 9 eggs, lightly beaten 10ml Dijon mustard small handful baby spinach, chopped 100g ham, chopped 60ml Parmesan or Pecorino cheese, grated

1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 12-hole muffin pan with cupcake cases or baking paper. Place the pumpkin and potatoes on a baking tray and drizzle with oil. Season and roast for about 35 minutes until cooked. Divide between the muffin holes. 2 Whisk together the eggs and mustard. Add the spinach and season. Divide between the muffin holes. Press the ham into the egg mixture and top with the cheese. Bake for about 20 minutes until set and golden.

TOMATO AND HAM TARTLETS

Preheat oven to 220°C. Line 4 x 8cm fluted tart tins with 400g ready-rolled shortcrust pastry. Prick the bottoms of the pastry with a fork. Bake for about 10 minutes until golden and crisp. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C. Divide 250ml shredded ham and 200g red and yellow cherry tomatoes evenly among the tins. Whisk 2 eggs and 60ml cream together, season and divide among the pastry shells. Bake for about 20 minutes until just set.

Preheat a chargrill on medium high. Peel and cut 1 medium pineapple into wedges and thread onto 6 bamboo skewers (which have been soaked in water) along with 300g cubed ham. Cook the kebabs for about 5 minutes, turning frequently, until charred.

Pat 100g tinned pineapple pieces dry with a paper towel. Combine 125g corn kernels and 10ml mayonnaise. Lay 2 sliced iceberg lettuce leaves over the lower third of 4 tortillas. Top with the pineapple, the corn mixture and 40g shaved ham. Roll up to enclose the filling.

shallow 1L ovenproof dish. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly into the prepared dish. Heat the milk, butter, zest and sugar on medium, stirring until dissolved. Slowly pour the warm milk mixture into the egg yolks, while whisking. Pour over the breadcrumbs and leave to stand for about 15 minutes until most of the liquid is absorbed. Place the dish in a roasting tray and fill the tray halfway with hot water. Bake for about 30 minutes until the custard has set. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Spread the jam over. For the meringue, lower the oven to 150°C. Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Slowly add the sugar, beating until the mixture is stiff and shiny. Spoon into a piping bag fitted with a 1.5cm round nozzle. Pipe the meringue on top. Bake the pudding (not inside the roasting tin with water) for about 30 minutes until the meringue is crisp on the outside.

Rub the butter into the flour with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. 2 Combine the vanilla and milk. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a soft but roll-able dough forms. Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 5mm-thick rectangle. Spread with the jam, then roll up into a long log. Cut into 4cm-thick rings and pack, cut side up, into the prepared dish. 3 For the sauce, stir all the ingredients on medium high until the sugar has dissolved. Bring to boil and pour half over the pudding. Bake for about 40 minutes until golden and cooked. Pour the rest of the sauce over the warm pudding. Serve with custard.

FOR THE PASTRY 625ml (2½ cups) cake flour 3ml (½ t) salt 15ml (1T) sugar 250g cold butter, cubed 80ml (1/3 cup) ice water FOR THE FILLING 2 x 385g tins sliced pie apples 125ml (½ cup) sultanas 160ml (2/3 cup) castor sugar + extra 3ml (½ t) ground cinnamon 1 egg, beaten 30ml (2T) milk whipped cream or custard, to serve

it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the water, 15ml at a time, mixing until it just begins to clump together. Shape into two flat discs, taking care not to overknead. Wrap each disc in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll one of the pastries out on a surface dusted with flour to 4mm thickness and line a 23cm loose-bottom fluted tart tin. Chill in the fridge for about 10 minutes until firm. Preheat oven to 190°C. Prick the base of the tart case with a fork then fill with scrunched baking paper and baking beans. Bake for 20 minutes, remove the beans and paper. Bake for about 10 minutes until lightly golden. For the filling, mix all the ingredients together. Spoon into the tart case. Roll the remaining pastry into a 4mm thick rectangle and cut into 13 x 1.5cm wide strips. Weave the strips of pastry evenly over the fruit to create a lattice pattern (see website button) and push them into the edge of the tart. Trim any overhanging pastry. Mix the egg and milk together and brush the lattice heavily with the mixture. Sprinkle with extra sugar. Bake for about 30 minutes until golden. Leave to cool to room temperature and serve with whipped cream or custard.

Making custard isn’t as tricky as you may think – plus it’s much cheaper than the store-bought kind!

VANILLA CUSTARD ✤ Makes about 375ml ✤ Takes 40 min

500ml milk 125ml sugar 4 extra-large egg yolks, at room temperature 5ml vanilla essence

sugar and egg yolks together until just combined. (Don’t use an electric mixer as you don’t want to incorporate too much air into the mixture.) 2 Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture from a height, whisking until combined. 3 Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the sauce coats the back of the spoon. Mix in the vanilla essence. 4 Place a sieve in a medium bowl and set the bowl inside another larger bowl of cold water. Strain the custard into the prepared bowl to stop the cooking process.

How to save curdling custard Place the saucepan with the custard in a bowl of ice-cold water and whisk vigorously. If this doesn’t work, blitz with a stick blender until smooth. If the custard looks like scrambled eggs, you’ll have to start again.

VARIATIONS Mix 100g chopped dark or white chocolate through the cooked custard and stir until melted. tips ✤ If it’s your first time making custard, rather start at a low temperature and cook for longer. ✤ Never allow custard to boil. To reheat custard, put the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stir occasionally until warm.

to 120°C. Slice the pineapples into thin rings. Heat the sugar and water in the microwave until dissolved. Brush both sides of the pineapple slices with the sugar syrup and pack on a large wire rack over a large baking tray. Dry in the oven for about 1 hour and 10 minutes. 2 Line the rounds of an egg carton base with pieces of foil (see website). Press warm slices of pineapple over each lined cup to create a flower shape. Set aside to cool.

3 For the cake, increase the oven temperature to 180°C. Line a 6cm deep x 22cm round cake tin with baking paper. Beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating to combine. Stir in the pineapple juice and buttermilk. Sift in the flours, salt, ginger and cinnamon and stir until just combined. Spoon into the prepared tin. Bake for about 50-55 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 4 For the pineapple syrup, heat the pineapple juice and sugar on medium until dissolved. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened slightly. Pour over the warm cake. Cool. 5 Decorate the cake with the pineapple flowers. Serve with whipped cream.

To make ✤ Cut our flowers in various sizes from your paper or card. ✤ Fold the flower at position X, to mark the centre of the flower. Apply glue to the flap where indicated. Fold the flower again, tucking the flap around the back of the flower. Place a peg over the glued area to hold it in place. Remove when dried. ✤ To curl the petals, hold the flower at the base and curl petals outward between your thumb and forefinger, beginning at the base of the petal and curling up toward the end. For the smaller flowers, curl the petals inward to resemble buds. ✤ To string a garland, thread a needle with embroidery thread or similar and push through each flower at its base, going through the paper at two points to ensure they sit up well.

FOR THE BALLOONS 2 Pin the partition shapes onto each balloon shape and sew in place. 3 Make a chunky knot on one side of the cotton or fishing line. Pin in place on the top side of the shape on the wrong side, remembering to insert the pin on the right side. Place the other shape on top, wrong sides facing and sew, leaving the bottom open for stuffing and inserting the balloon basket. 4 Join the line piece to the basket, lightly stuff the balloon with toy stuffing or batting, pin the basket in place, and sew. Repeat for all baskets. FOR THE CLOUDS AND WATER DROPLETS 1 Pin the knotted cotton or fishing line in place on the top of each as before, pin

This was the first of the TV contestants’ challenges on The Great British Sewing Bee. Follow the instructions, and it’s simple to make. If you’re a beginner, use a plain fabric or one with a random pattern that doesn’t need matching. Box pleats are used to fit the skirt into the waistband in much the same way as gathers, but, as they’re flat to the body, the end result is a smoother, more elegant outline.

HOOKS Small and generally concealed, hooks play an important part in keeping garments securely fastened. Tiny hooks and eyes at the top of a zip stop it from opening, while more robust hooks and bars at the waistline of trousers and skirts can take immense strain. As with all fastenings, measuring and marking to ensure the correct position is extremely important. Whatever the size, the hook should be stitched onto the overlap and the bar onto the underlying section.

MAKING BOX PLEATS There are many different kinds of pleats, but the principles for making them are pretty much the same. Precision is the key. Whether you’re making box pleats, as for this skirt, knife pleats or inverted pleats, unless they’re exactly the same size and spaced evenly, the finished effect will look unprofessional. If you’re using a commercial pattern, the hard work will be done for you, as the pieces will have dots or circles marking exactly where the pleats need to be creased. If you’re drafting your own pattern, you’ll need to work out mathematically exactly how wide you would like the pleats to be and how far apart you would like them to be spaced.

Start with the bar: if it’s at the top of a zip then position it directly above the teeth so that it can take all the strain. Use doubled thread knotted at the end. Bring the needle up from the underside and up through the hole at one end of the bar, then pass the needle back down through the fabric outside the hole. Repeat three times and secure with two tiny stitches at the back. Repeat with the hole at the other end of the bar, making sure the bar is precisely vertical. Hook the hook over the bar and lay the flap over it to ensure it is in the correct position. Holding the hook in position, sew it to the under layer of the top flap so the stitches don’t show on the front of the garment.

To make Transfer pleat marks from the pattern to all layers of fabric. With pleats, there will be marks (small circles, for example) to show where to make a crease and different marks (larger circles, for example) to show where these creases should be placed.

I’m an absolute coffee addict, but I know it’s staining my teeth! How can I prevent this from happening? Over time, teeth naturally become stained from foods and drinks with high food colour. Coffee, tea and red wine in particular tend to stain teeth. Brushing immediately after eating and drinking helps to prevent stains from setting in. Make sure to always brush your teeth for a full two minutes, and use a soft toothbrush to avoid damaging the enamel. Rinsing your mouth and drinking with water immediately after tea and coffee can also wash away particles that cause tooth discolouration. BOTHERED BY MOUTH ULCERS? Mouth ulcers remain a mystery! Not because they’re not clearly visible, but because no one knows exactly how they’re formed. They often appear if your immune system is low or you’re stressed. Managing mouth ulcers can be tricky as they’re susceptible to acidity and temperature. Dental consultant, Dr Marc Sher, recommends using nature-based Bye Mouth Ulcer, R75, available at major pharmacies. He also suggests… Brushing teeth with a soft-bristled brush after meals and floss daily. Using a tongue scraper to reduce the amount of harmful oral bacteria. Avoiding toothpaste with sodium laurel sulphate. Avoiding spicy food, fried food, carbonated drinks, alcohol and hot drinks. Taking a good multi-vitamin. Cutting down on smoking and coffee (which exacerbate tongue plaque build-up).

HOW TO TREAT FUNGAL NAIL INFECTIONS Fungal infections are the most common nail infections, causing 50 percent of all nail problems. They’re more common as people get older, and affect more men than women. Nail fungal infections most commonly affect the toenails and are responsible for pain and discomfort when walking, and can cause nail deformities. Diagnosing the fungal infection early and treating it effectively is very important: Ask your doctor, podiatrist or pharmacist for advice. In cases that don’t involve the nail bed, or where less than 50 percent of the surface area of the nail is affected, treatment applied directly to the nail is usually prescribed. The advantages of topical treatment (in a lacquer format) are faster absorption through the nail plate to the nail bed, and lower risk of side effects compared with oral medications. If the infection affects more than 50 percent of the surface of the nail and involves the nail bed, your doctor may prescribe oral medication together

with a topical treatment. Always complete the course of treatment when treating fungal infections, even if you may feel the infection has been cured. Fungal infections of any type have a nasty habit of reappearing. It’s important to continue your treatment as prescribed. Infected nail needs to be replaced by new healthy nail growth – this can take 12-18 months for toenails, and up to 6 months for fingernails. If you suffer from nail infections, use Loceryl 5%, R430, leading pharmacies. It’s a lacquer that releases an active ingredient called amorolfine that penetrates the nail to get to the site of the infection. Apply once a week.

Joburg-based MME Dieticians Kate Tattersall and Jenny Meyer weigh in on popular celebrity diets and tell us why they’re achievable, or not.

The rapid weight loss during this phase is driven mainly through the body using fat stores as its primary fuel, potentially leading to ketosis. The advocate of the diet, Dr Barry Sears, believes that once you follow this plan, your body will go into the optimal ‘zone’ to lose weight.

Although carbohydrates aren’t completely restricted, an intake of 40 percent is below current recommended intake, and active individuals may struggle with this. The Zone Diet also makes social situations more difficult to manage.

MASTER CLEANSE The Master Cleanse is a modified juice fast – that’s right, no food for 10 days. Followers say the diet detoxifies the body and removes excess fat.

What the experts say Although rapid weight loss results from this cleanse, you won’t maintain it. The detox doesn’t teach you anything about healthy eating principles, making better choices and breaking bad habits. The detox drink doesn’t meet any macronutrient and micronutrient requirements, which can result in longterm health consequences if followed too often or over longer periods of time. Maple syrup has a high sugar content and doesn’t provide any protein, fats, fibre, vitamins or minerals that our bodies require every day. The lack of volume, substance and variety makes it laborious to follow, even for just a 10-day period. Detoxing may result in low energy levels, fatigue, headaches and food cravings.

THE 3-HOUR DIET This diet requires eating six small meals every three hours to boost metabolism and minimise cravings. And there’s no food exclusion! Jorge Cruise, author of The 3-Hour Diet, advises to eat almost anything, as long as it’s a small portion.

What the experts say While a good meal structure provides important benefits of improved blood glucose and insulin control, which in turn promotes sustained energy levels and assists in controlling appetite and cravings, eating every three hours isn’t always practical. This can result in an increased kilojoules intake if poor food choices are made, or if portion sizes exceed what’s recommended for the individual. Weight loss can result with this approach; however, meal timing alone isn’t sufficient to achieve this, and making healthier food choices and portion control need to be addressed.

DO IT RIGHT ‘Dieting is a short-term solution, so put the effort into making lifestyle changes that lead to weight loss and benefit your overall health,’ explains Kate. ‘Lifestyle adjustments include a balanced diet and regular activity. Burning energy requires effort, so whether it’s a run, swimming, dancing or a brisk walk, it’s important to get active! ’

WorldMags.net ‘I finally realised how unhappy Natalie had become,’ says Francine. ‘And I knew her weight needed to be addressed.’ Tipping the scales Francine consulted a dietician to correctly assess her daughter’s weight and come up with an effective action plan. Most experts in paediatric healthcare and nutrition shy away from using the term ‘diet’, because of its negative connotations. ‘A child should only ever be put on a more restrictive eating plan if they’re dangerously overweight,’ says Lila Bruk, a Joburg-based dietician. ‘This should never be done without professional supervision, as it can have severe emotional and physical consequences.’ A different approach More importantly, children's weight loss should be approached differently to adults. ‘With adults, an eating plan includes specific quantities of the foods they need to eat and stricter portion sizes,’ she says. ‘Because children are growing, we focus on educating them on how to make healthy choices and to listen to their bodies in order to assess their own hunger levels.’ While adults have an understanding of their own obstacles to eating healthily and are more capable of changing bad habits, children need gentle guidance during this process to change or adjust their behaviour.

he dawn of spring is akin to New Year in the getting-things-done and making-things-better department. In fact, I’d say that spring is, if anything, a better time than January for bold plans and rash ambitions. I seldom experience an urge to selfimprove at the start of the year, when traditionally one is supposed to craft a list of improvements, goals and dreams. After the Christmas holidays I’m always behind on my deadlines and my credit card payments, and besieged by short people who require haircuts and white socks before Wednesday. January, for me, is about survival. It’s about white-knuckling it through the first weeks of term and trying not to shout or cry more than is absolutely necessary. Please don’t ask me to resolve to give up wine and chocolate while also religiously separating my trash for recycling and trying to live more mindfully. But there’s something about the warmer, longer days and the smell of jasmine that makes me feel ambitious. Often, this takes the form of starting some new project. In spring, I’ll often be overtaken by a novel and fairly timeconsuming idea, such as purchasing an earth worm farm, taking on a sourdough starter to make my own yeast-free loaves, or perhaps purchasing a mosaicking kit. Yes, it’s a bit of effort, I

admit to myself, and I’m pretty busy as it is, but once I get into it I’m sure it’ll be easy and fun. Soon I’ll be serving my earthworm-fed organic vegetables and homemade sourdough bread from my lovingly mosaicked platter. How wonderfully wholesome and fulfilled I’ll feel then!

Another spring ritual of mine is to be beset by the notion that I can and should be a better parent. My husband

hates this one, because he knows I’m not content to be a better parent alone. He has to be a better parent too. In fact, the kids have to be better kids. We all have to be a better, happier, healthier family. We’re going to take up mountain biking! (‘Why?’) It’s time you kids learnt how to cook! (‘But Mom, you can cook, so why do we have to?’) We’re going to start going to more art galleries! (‘Can I stay home?’) It’s high time the children started learning about world affairs! (‘I don’t care about Ukraine’) ‘We need to make more of an effort to really connect!’ (‘But I’m watching soccer’). No one wants to be better, happier or healthier. If my family is so wilfully averse to improvement, there’s always the house. The house gets sadly neglected in our busy family, but spring is the time I decide to change that. Backwash the pool. Rehang the family photos. Rearrange the furniture. Oil the woodwork. Replant the dahlias. Tidy out the cupboards. There’s no end to my ambitions. My interest and energy, though, are finite. Within a month or so I start to lose enthusiasm for my projects and improvements. And my family lets out a collective sigh of relief and they turn their attention back to the soccer.

Blogger Tricia Goyer alludes to the typical day of a busy mom where it’s easy to think of our kids as ‘tasks’ rather than as ‘hearts’ we need to connect with. ‘I sometimes struggle with putting my kids before my to-do list. After all, I can mark things off my to-do list. Kids are never done! It hurts to realise what my kids see and experience on some days: a busy, distracted mom who orders their lives instead of really seeing them.’ Kids learn that in order to get our attention, they either need to get in trouble or do something special. This isn’t healthy according to Becky Bailey, PHD, author of I Love Your Rituals. Here are some ideas to give focused attention at regular intervals during the day, which should leave kids happy to entertain themselves since their ‘love’ or ‘attention tank’ is then full!

Toddlers are physically incapable of understanding and regulating their feelings. It’s our job to help teach them to make the connection in order to manage their feelings, understand themselves, form balanced relationships and to be calmer and happier.

3 STEPS TO SOOTHE A TANTRUM

IN THE THROES OF A MELTDOWN, CONNECT WITH THE RIGHT BRAIN FIRST Using logic to calm them down just won’t work! (‘Your other toys are much better’; ‘Your birthday’s coming up and you’ll get something new and nicer’). Rather, connect with the emotional experience and reflect this to your child (‘I can see that you are really sad that your toy’s broken’, or ‘I know you’re really upset now’.) Try to soothe him and name the feeling they are experiencing – don’t assume they know what anger is, you may need to name it for them. WHEN YOUR CHILD IS CALM, ENGAGE THE LEFT BRAIN, bringing logic in to understand why they felt the way they did. Remind them

A CHILD MAY EXPERIENCE MORE THAN ONE EMOTION AT ONE TIME, sometimes both good and bad together (for example, both joy and anxiety). Have you heard of PCIT? Kids are born with different temperaments. Some are easygoing and some have more difficulty adjusting to the rhythms of everyday life. A strategy that works with one child often won’t be effective with another, resulting in frustration and tension between you and your child, as well as decreasing your ability to quell tantrums, defiance, and misbehaviour. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a research-supported programme that aims to improve parent-child relationships and child behaviour by working simultaneously and equally with parents and kids between two and seven years old,

who exhibit significant disruptive behaviour. The goal is to break existing patterns by increasing positive feelings and interaction to improve child behaviour, and to empower parents to use consistent, predictable, effective parenting strategies. Teaching sessions involve modelling and role-playing of specific skills, then subsequent ‘SuperNanny’ tactics where parents are coached with an audio ‘bug’ in the ear, linked up to the therapist observing events from out of sight. Practising these skills at home is important for desired results. In SA, not many therapists specialise in PCIT, but often elements are integrated into their approach.

Arguments are an inevitable part of every relationship, but a sporting approach could have both of you feeling vindicated in the end ngie Snyman, YF parenting editor and married for 10 years, says, ‘We generally have a peaceful household. Seldom do arguments of the yelling and screaming type break out – our relationship argument style just doesn’t default to name-calling and screaming, which, come to think of it, might be a lot more satisfying! Put it down to ‘keeping the peace for the children’s sake’ and all that, but sadly passive aggression is generally the way we do it. Does it work? Well, I don’t think so, but we’d certainly rather not be like our neighbours across the street who don’t mind everyone on the block hearing their frequent blow outs, which usually end in someone driving off like a maniac. When it comes to our domestics, it’s purely a case of his word against mine. And in the absence of a neutral third party, it sometimes seems impossible to come to an agreement where we both feel heard, so that home life can continue harmoniously.

The rules of engagement American psychologist, and marriage and family therapist, Dr Nathan Cobb, points out that every sporting contest we engage in is governed by a clear set of rules. Understood at the outset by each side and agreed on as fair and equal. ‘Rules provide purpose, safety, structure and predictability. They make it possible for everyone to understand what’s going on, strategise and resolve disagreements.’ He proposes a set of ‘fair fighting rules for couples’ to level the playing fields and to arrive at lasting peaceful cohabitation. While the clear cut rules might be part of why men love sport so passionately, a relationship handbook packed with rules for both parties to observe might not have the same allure for your spouse! But Dr Cobb’s game plan sure makes a lot of sense and will serve as a great starting point for constructive and civilised conflict resolution… RULE

Avoid name-calling, insults, or swearing. Putting your partner down or criticising their character shows disrespect. In sports there are rules that prevent one player from intentionally injuring another. In relationships, similar rules must apply. When you intentionally injure your partner, it’s like saying, ‘You’re not safe with me. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect myself or to win.’

It’s pointless to blame each other, as it distracts you from solving the problem. It invites him to be defensive and it escalates the argument. Blaming doesn’t make either of you feel better. When you feel he’s to blame, make a conscious decision that your relationship’s too important to undermine it with blame and judgement. Focus on keeping your goodwill for each other intact and finding solutions to the problem.

When necessary, use time-outs Violating the fair fighting rules is typically a sign that you’ve already crossed a threshold physiologically, in which signals from the more primitive, emotional centres of your brain have begun to drown out the signals from the more rational parts of your brain. Stress hormones flood your body at this stage. Self-preservation becomes the focus. In this fight-or-flight state, creative problem-solving and mutual cooperation are unlikely. You end up in an escalating argument that becomes hostile and defensive. It’s impossible to have a rational discussion in a climate of hostility and disrespect. This is when it’s time to call a time-out to calm down and get perspective. Why do you feel the way you do? How could you express yourself in a positive way? What about the other person’s feelings and point of view? Think things through before you speak. Then return to each other to resolve the issues calmly. A time-out should be at least a half-hour long (but no longer than 24 hours). It takes at least 30 minutes for your body’s physiology to return to a normal resting state and for your thoughts to become less hostile or defensive. RULE

No yelling Remember that yelling can be subjective. What’s yelling to your spouse may not be yelling to you. Perhaps you don’t hear how you sound. Or you may have grown up in a home where family members were loud and passionate, and talking loudly when you’re upset seems normal. His experience is the one that counts here, however. If it feels like yelling to your spouse, then you’re at least raising your voice, if not yelling. Make a conscious effort to lower your voice. The meaning of your communication lies in how you deliver your message. RULE

Take turns speaking Let one person speak at a time. When one speaks, the other should be listening – really listening, not just planning a rebuttal. Take turns speaking and listening so that you both have a chance to say what you need to.

No talk of divorce In the heat of an argument, threatening to leave the relationship is manipulative and hurtful. It creates anxiety about being abandoned and undermines your ability to resolve issues. It quickly erodes your partner’s confidence in your commitment to the relationship. Trust isn’t easily restored once it’s broken in this way. It makes the problems in your relationship seem much bigger than they probably are. RULE

Scorecard: track your progress Dr Cobb advises to evaluate how well you ‘follow the rules’ when you argue, and where you fall short, to lift your game. ‘Do you fight fair or are you a belowthe-belt fighter? Which of these rules do you struggle with? Are there changes you need to make? Write down any rules that you find yourself breaking in an argument. Write down any steps you could take to help you stick to that rule.’ Something to always keep in mind is that your own happiness is your responsibility. You can’t expect anything or anyone else to make you happy. A relationship will be happier if both its members are happy to begin with. Who doesn’t want to be in a relationship with less friction? While it’s healthy to argue, how you go about it is the key to it being constructive.

Define yourself, not your spouse

Be the expert of your own world, not your spouse’s. Use words that describe how you feel, and what you want and need, not what your partner feels, wants or believes. It may seem easier to analyse him than yourself, but interpreting his feelings and motives distracts you from identifying your own underlying issues, and invites defensiveness from your spouse. More importantly, telling your spouse what he thinks, believes or wants is controlling. So, identify your unmet needs, feelings and ways of thinking, and describe them to your spouse.

Resist the temptation to bring up other issues from the past. It’s discouraging to keep bringing up the past. You can’t change it, so keep your focus on what can be done now to resolve the issue and move on. If you go off topic and onto other issues, stop and agree to get back on track. You can always come back to other issues later. If you do find yourself bringing up issues from the past, it’s likely because those issues were never resolved in the first place. This rule will be easier to follow, going forward, if you both make a commitment to discuss issues as they happen, rather than letting them fester.

Using physical force or threatening to use force in any way is unacceptable. Practise the self-discipline to set limits on your behaviour before you reach this point. If either of you resort to physical force and violence, seek professional help. Remember that this includes punching a hole in a wall, throwing things or breaking something in anger. Acting out in anger violates the other person’s boundaries and sense of safety. Each of us has a right to be safe and free of abuse or physical danger in our relationships.

This behaviour is purely fear, coupled with displaced aggression. This occurs as a result of a syndrome of benign neglect. It simply means your dog was never taken to a reputable puppy socialisation class and basic obedience training where you could’ve been taught how to behave with a dog and for your dachshund to learn appropriate behaviour in the company of other pets and people. This type of dog behaviour hints towards living in isolation, completely comfortable in its own home environment, with lots of

human affection and undivided attention. This isn’t a happy or secure animal. Most pet owners pat or talk to their dogs when the dog is in a state of panic, which merely reinforces the unacceptable aggression and fear. People think they’re consoling their pet, but a dog doesn’t understand human psychology. You need to subscribe to dog training under the auspices of an animal behaviourist, so that you can learn how to restructure your relationship to build up the dog’s confidence. You’ll teach this dog to earn affection, attention, exercise and food. You’ll learn to reward him for calm behaviour and ignore inappropriate behaviour. Try change your mindset to be calm at all times, since at the moment he’s your dictator. This type of dog needs to learn to socialise with other pets in a park or puppy socialisation class. GOING TO TOWN An outing to the Big City opens eyes and shifts suburban perceptions

I

t was one of those lazy, sunshiny, Joburg in-between-school days, and Rachel was at home, feeling bored. I had a lot of work to do, so I was feeling bored, too. There isn’t an ocean or a mountain of things for bored teenagers to do in Joburg, I have to admit, and there’s only so much mooching around a mall you can do before you have to WhatsApp your chauffeur and ask to be picked up outside the movie entrance. ‘Hurry up, dad! You said you’d be five minutes!’ It wasn’t like this when I was bored and in my teens, because I knew that just a train-ride away, beyond the trim-and-tidy suburbs and the veld-andfactory sprawl, there lay the city of my dreams, its towers touching the sky, its lights pulsing like the beat of my heart. To go to Johannesburg was an adventure, a journey into a world of glamour and excitement, dusted with an adrenaline edge of danger. ‘Woohoo!’ I would call out to my buddies at platforms along the way, and they would hop on board and we would clicketyclack our way into the cavernous station, scrambling off as the wheels squealed, jostling into the jaws of the city, trying not to cause too much trouble. ‘Hey, I’ve got an idea,’ I say to Rachel, many years down the line. ‘Let’s go to town for the day!’ She narrows her eyes. What’s there to do there?

I mull it over for a moment. We’ll go for a walk! Look at the old buildings! Stop to take pictures of the public art! Admire the statue of Nelson Mandela! She widens her eyes, un-scrunches her nose. ‘We’re going to Sandton City? Really?’ No, not that statue! Not the big bronze dancing man in the square. We’re going to see Mandela the Fighter.

We’ll go for a walk! Look at the old buildings! Stop to take pictures of the public art! Admire the statue of Nelson Mandela! Rachel likes the idea, all the more so when I mention that the trip will include lunch at a trendy downtown restaurant. So she invites her friend, Bronwyn, to come along, and we cross the Nelson Mandela Bridge, with its graceful, spidery span of pylons and cables, and the city opens before us like a gift. We find a parking spot on Fox Street, and just an amble away, in front of the sandstone fortress of the Magistrate’s Court, there stands the boxer, in a sparring pose, across the road from the offices where he first practised law. The statue is made of layers of flattened,

coloured metal, and it springs to life like a figure from a comic book. We stroll along, towards Main Street, bypassing the small businesses – the sellers of fruit, the weavers of weaves, the dispensers of airtime – and the Big Businesses, the paragons of industry and commerce, their grand façades embellished with little rococo flourishes in copper and steel and concrete. I point these out to my fellow strollers, and it strikes me, and I point this out too, that the heart and soul of Johannesburg isn’t what it used to be. It’s heartier. Soulier. Revitalised, rejuvenated, reborn. The boulevards are wider, the trees are greener. There are coffee shops and squares and fountains. There are works of public art all over the place, from the herd of leaping impala to the miner at the rock face to the gold-leaf rhino on top of his plinth at the foot of the skyscraper. Town is alive, with colour and bustle, an energy you don’t notice when you’re driving, because you’re just a part of the traffic. We spend a couple of hours walking off the boredom and walking up an appetite, and when we get back home and I ask Rachel what she enjoyed most about her outing to town, she doesn’t hesitate for a moment. ‘Lunch,’ she says, and I have to agree, because for once it wasn’t at the mall. Lee-Anne says they’re extremely proud Michael and Lee-Anne Lock they won. ‘We’re both so competitive in with Hannah everything we do. I’m still a little numb that we’ve actually won and I guess it will only really hit me when our kitchen is done and we’re on our way to Disney World!’ So what is life like now? All Hannah wants is baking equipment with brightly coloured bowls, whisks and measuring spoons. Lee-Anne can’t wait to turn her kitchen cave into an open-plan space that will allow her to interact with her family while she’s cooking. Coming away from the show, Lee-Anne admits she wishes she had pursued her passion for cooking earlier, but her success with Clover’s Little Big Cook Off proves it’s never too late, or too early to get cooking. When the news of a family cooking show appeared on screens early this year., Micheal Lock from Durban decided to enter his wife and step-daughter into Clover’s Little Big Cook Off in the hopes of being on the show, with the chance of at least winning R1000 off pack. Lee-Anne Lock and her daughter Hannah have always had a love for cooking. Lee-Anne was involved in the kitchen from a young age, which simply made it a way of life when Hannah was old enough to join her. Like all good recipes, great ingredients are necessary for success, and that’s precisely how Sugar & Spice got their name. Hannah with her quick-wit and passionate personality went well with mom’s loving nature and sweet tooth, and by their first appearance on the show it ement! was evident these girls were winners. Nerves and excit There were many special moments for Sugar & Spice, like gaining an advantage in their first episode by winning a 10-minute advance on their first time trial. No matter what the judges threw at them, it was rewarding to know they could make something new and still walk away with raving feedback. Lee-Anne didn’t realise the show would reveal their silent understanding, similarities and what a strong bond she has with Hannah. ‘We laughed and cried together, which made us have an even tighter bond.’ Sugar & Spice walked away with the grand prize of Clover’s Little Big Cook Off, which consists of a fun-filled family holiday to Disney World for a week, while Lee-Anne’s kitchen gets a dream makeover worth R300 000 with appliances sponsored by Russell Hobbs. PEA AND MINT SOUP WITH PARMESAN BISCUITS AND CROUTONS 40ml Clover MooiRiver Butter 10ml olive oil 5 spring onions, sliced, plus a few extra to serve 1.5 L hot vegetable stock 100ml Clover Fresh Full Cream Milk 900g frozen baby peas 10g fresh mint leaves 85g Parmesan, very fnely grated Method 1 In a large pot, heat the butter and olive oil. When foaming, add the spring onions. Gently fry until golden. Stir in the stock, bring to the boil. 2 Stir in the peas and milk, simmer for about 3-5 minutes until heated through. Remove the pan from the heat, add the mint leaves. Using a stick blender, blend until smooth. Parmesan biscuits 1 Preheat oven to 200 C. 2 Line a baking sheet with baking paper and divide the grated Parmesan into even circles. 3 Bake on middle shelf for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown. While still warm and a bit fexible, release the biscuits from the baking sheet with a palette knife, allow to cool on a cooling rack until set.
