Dear Friends of Kevin Guest House, Thank you for joining us to celebrate our 44th anniversary of opening our doors to patient families traveling to Western New York for critical medical care. We are honored to have as our co-chairs, three individuals completely dedicated to our cause, Judy Gorino, Marla Coniglio and Jamie Scotland, who along with our committee, put on a great event tonight - our 24th annual Affaire of the Heart presented by The Rich Family Foundation. Personally Kevin “Duke” Reilly has been a KGH champion in the community during a critical expansion of our organization.

Affaire of the Heart , as our signature event, helps support a significant portion of our annual operating budget to maintain our beautiful old Victorian home and provide quality service to our guests. If you don’t find that perfect item tonight, we ask that you consider supporting our Pay It Forward Campaign. Over half of the 1,200 guests we serve annually cannot afford any modest donation to stay with us at Kevin Guest House.

We receive an average of $11 per guest; however we are committed to never turn a family away due to financial need. Your gift tonight will help us to continue to open our doors to the many guests who otherwise couldn’t afford a place to stay during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

THE KEVIN GUEST HOUSE STORY Kevin Guest House is America’s first healthcare hospitality house. Since 1972, it has been a home away from home for patients and families traveling to receive state of the art health care and treatment in Buffalo area hospitals and medical centers. Three homes, comprising eleven bedrooms, five bathrooms and various dining and living common areas, provide sanctuary for those in need of affordable shelter during medical crises. Over 53,000 guests have stayed at Kevin Guest House since its inception, many from Western New York, but also including guests from 49 states, Canada, and eleven other countries.

Kevin Guest House was founded by Claudia and Cyril Garvey, whose son Kevin Garvey, passed away in January 1972 at the age of 13 after an eighteen month fight against leukemia. During his treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute the Garveys became aware of many other families, traveling for the care of a child, who were unable to afford lodging.

Shortly before Kevin’s death Mr. and Mrs. Garvey purchased the property located at 782 Ellicott Street, in the heart of the expanding Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. With the help of employees from Roswell, they formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and renovated the house with the support of volunteers and donations from the community.

Kevin Guest House welcomed their first guest on July 26, 1972.

In addition to our main house, we offer four transplant recovery apartments, the only of their kind in Buffalo, for patients and their caregivers. These fully functional apartments allow bone marrow and other transplant patients an environmentally safe place to recover that is within the required distance to their medical facility. Often times these patients are required to stay 100 days or more within 30 minutes of their medical facility for monitoring and testing.

With the help of our generous community of donors and supporters, we are able to continue our mission of serving those in need.

Kevin Garvey Award Kevin Garvey, son of Claudia and Cyril Garvey, was the inspiration for starting Kevin Guest House while he was receiving treatment for leukemia at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Kevin was lovingly called “heart” by his family as a nickname.

The Kevin Garvey Award is given to an individual or organization that opens their heart to our home by showing their support and devotion, to our guests and to the mission of Kevin Guest House.

Kevin “Duke” Reilly and the team at John W. Danforth Company have been generous and steadfast supporters of Kevin Guest House and our mission since 2009, when one of our board members introduced Duke to the House. Since that time they have been consistently one of our top donors, sponsoring our Celebrity Golf Tournament, Oktoberfest , Anniversary Celebrations and of course Affaire of the Heart.

Expansion Campaign for Kevin Guest House As healthcare options expand throughout Western New York, so does demand for Kevin Guest House.

While our 1867 Grand Victorian home is a beautiful respite, the limitations of the home cause us to turn away nearly 400 potential guests each year.

Rooms are located on the second and third floors, and are not accessible.

Large families often need to be split up between rooms.

The eight rooms in our main house share two bathrooms for up to 18 guests.

Demand for lodging exceeds what we have available.

To continue to provide the highest quality of services to the most guests in need, the Expansion Campaign for Kevin Guest House will address these needs. With a goal to raise $3 million, this expansion includes the purchase and renovation of 766 Ellicott Street, introducing four larger family suites with private baths, and two transplant recovery apartments. An elevator is being constructed on the back of the house, making Kevin Guest House accessible for the first time in 44 years.

INSPIRATIONAL STORIES When we think of Kevin Guest House, it is easy to think of the organization in terms of emphasizing the word house...but truly, the emphasis should be on the word guest.

It is our guests who are the heart of our mission. We strive to not only give them lodging, but also to show them caring and compassion in their time of need. Our guests continue to amaze and inspire us with their strength, faith, and resiliency in uncertain circumstances; and we salute them.

When we learned in November that Roman’s AML leukemia had relapsed, we were terrified. First he went through chemo treatments to get into remission and then the only option was a stem cell transplant.

We live in a city about the size of Buffalo, London Ontario; halfway between Toronto and Detroit. The medical care is superb, but does not include unrelated donor stem cell transplants. Since we had to search for treatment elsewhere, our hematologist suggested a stem cell transplant at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY. Roman had no hesitation. He had grown up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and had great memories of Buffalo. From his career in medical technology, he knew of Roswell’s stellar reputation.

After making the decision to go to Roswell for the transplant we had to look for a place to stay during the treatment. We learned about Kevin Guest House online as we were searching for nearby accommodations.

We checked out KGH during a preliminary visit to Roswell. We were given a tour by a friendly and kind volunteer. Very appealing is the fact that this is a place for people whose loved ones are in hospital; you meet people in similar situations.

My husband’s medical treatments were grueling. I spent about 8 hours a day in the hospital with him.

Coming “home” to the KGH was a blessing. The staff were always kind and compassionate. Everything ran smoothly, even though so many people came and went. The volunteers who bring dinner are amazing; some of the most generous people I have ever met. They are able to create with their food and generosity an atmosphere of optimism, camaraderie and joy. Many volunteers contribute in making Kevin Guest House so special. In the spring, I met volunteer gardeners whose devoted hard work was not unnoticed. Did I mention that the grounds and the house are beautiful?

Since being home we are doing fairly well, with Roman making regular trips to our home hospital for ongoing care. It is a long journey. We are grateful to everyone at KGH for their vision and hard work — for providing a safe and caring “home” during difficult times. We will always remember the goodness of the people we met.

At Kevin Guest House, you learn lifelong lessons about courage, compassion and generosity.

Nick, Sr. and Barb Dixon, from Duke Center, PA, stayed at Kevin Guest House for more than five months to be close to their son Nick.

“It was just before Thanksgiving and I had been trying to get a hold of my son, Nick for three or four days and he wasn’t getting back to me. I finally decided I would just go over to his apartment. When he didn’t respond, I had to have the NYS Police and Allegany Sherriff help me get in.

We found him on the floor, unresponsive and thrashing. It is a sight and moment a mother should never experience.” - Barb Dixon.

Nick was rushed to Olean General, but because this was beyond their scope of expertise, he was send to Buffalo General Medical Center, where he stayed for five months. He remained unconscious for four to five weeks, had emergency surgery in December and in January they were pinpointing an autoimmune encephalitis, where antibodies attack the brain. His disease is one in ten million. Nick is such a likeable, funny guy. He played high school football and loves golf. He is only 32 years old.

He finally started to become responsive – a hand-squeeze, a toe wiggle. It was a slow progression to total cognizance. Nick was moved into medical rehab on March 7 but still had a hard time remembering. He becomes very confused and apprehensive. That part is very hard.

“We found out about Kevin Guest House through the Buffalo General social services division.

We had been staying at a hotel, and it was getting too expensive. You just can’t sleep in your car.

It’s everything that goes into Kevin Guest House. This is a place where you can come and be with yourfamily; have comradery with others in similar situations and feel more at ease. It means so much to our family. The greatest place we’ve ever found on this earth has been Kevin Guest House.”

Amee & Snehalataben Patel It was 2 a.m. by the time Amee Patel checked into Kevin Guest House after returning from Buffalo General Hospital, where her father was being treated. She and her parents had been visiting her brother, Falgun, in Brampton, Canada, to celebrate Raksha Bandhan, an Indian festival honoring the brother-sister relationship.

At the end of the trip, her father collapsed and died for nearly fifteen minutes before being revived by paramedics. He was rushed to a hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, but it was taking more time than expected to schedule his cardiac bypass surgery. After four days, Amee decided they should not wait any longer and brought him to Buffalo for treatment. “Buffalo General had him scheduled for surgery the very next day,” Amee said. Because her father developed complications after the surgery, Amee and her family would end up staying at Kevin Guest House for nearly four months.

Amee says that her father was initially supposed to be at the hospital for three to four weeks, but after her father developed pneumonia he experienced several other complications including kidney function failure. This drew out their stay far longer than they had expected. “We were glad to have stayed at Kevin Guest House. Not only is it very close to the hospital which makes it convenient for us to visit my father, but it is only half the cost of the hotel,” Amee explains.

Amee relied on the guest workspace to work away from her office so not to lose income during her four-month- stay in Buffalo. Amee’s mother, Snehalataben, who does not speak English, would cook traditional Indian meals during their stay. The ability to have a sense of “normalcy” and a feeling of home meant so much to Amee and her family. “The fact that my mom can cook makes us feel at home. Kevin Guest House feels like home rather than a hotel.”

Tracy and Wendy Persons Current guests, Tracy and his wife Wendy from Binghamton, NY have been traveling to Kevin Guest House since early June of this year, to receive treatments to prepare for an upcoming blood & marrow stem cell transplant (BMT) to help fight Tracy’s non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Tracy is retired from the US Army and from the Binghamton Public Works Department where he worked for 35 years. Wendy works as a cashier at Price Chopper.

They were referred to Dr. Hernandez (Oncology) and Dr. Ross (Blood & Marrow Transplant) at Roswell where Tracy participated in a specialized cancer study where stronger chemotherapy was administered. Through Roswell’s social work department they were set up to stay at Kevin Guest House.

“When we first walked through the door we immediately thought, wow look at this place!” said Tracy.

The first day at Roswell was grueling. They started at 7am and were at the hospital until 7pm. “When we finally got back to Kevin Guest House, they had leftover dinner for us.” said Wendy.

The Persons have been together for 22 years and have been married for 18. They went to Niagara Falls for their honeymoon but had never been to Buffalo before. They have enjoyed the city and have checked out Canalside and the Zoo. “Even though I am in pain I want to keep doing things.” said Tracy.

Tracy just went in to the hospital last week for his stem cell transplant and, once complete, they will hope to move into one of the BMT Recovery Apartments on the KGH campus.

“It is all of the little things like that that make this place special. Soon after my treatment started, my goatee began to fall out. It’s just something I didn’t think about and I didn’t have a razor with me. One of the volunteers was so kind and got me a razor. We love having the prayer and bible study with Reverend Melody from Roswell’s Pastoral Care Department group. We just really enjoy sitting around the table and talking with other guests who are going through what we’re going through. Staying here, you start to get into a comfort zone,” Tracy explained.

Hello Friends, My name is Gracyn Graham. I am 4 years old. On October 3, 2015, what started out as a fun trip to go shopping and out for pizza turned into something very scary.

While we were at lunch, my Papa suffered a serious stroke and has been at Buffalo General Hospital ever since. He has been working very hard every day at therapy and is getting better.

Since my Papa’s stroke, my Nana has stayed in Buffalo around the clock so that she can be there to meet with his doctors and be there if he needs anything. She has stayed 42 nights at the Kevin Guest House, which is right across the street from the hospital. The Kevin Guest House is a not-for-profit hospitality house and operates on the generosity of guests and members of the community. This Christmas, my family and I would like to do something special for the people at Kevin Guest House who have taken such good care of my Nan and families like ours who are so far from home.

We have decided to set up a collection for the Kevin Guest House, which we will deliver prior to Christmas. Please consider donating an item or two from their wish list for this wonderful cause!

·Bob Manning suffered a stroke in October of 2015 and was rushed to Buffalo General Medical Center ICU and stayed for a month. His wife Lynn stayed at Kevin Guest House for more than 40 nights it is over 150 miles round trip from where they live. In mid-November Gracyn (age 4) sent out the letter to family and friends asking for donations of items from the KGH wish list and collected thousands of items, over $600 in cash and more than $300 in gift cards. Sadly, we recently learned that the Manning family lost their beloved Bob, husband, father and Papa. Lynn’s time at KGH allowed her to be close enough so she could be close to him during his recovery and care, and gave Bob more precious time with his family.
