Kearny police officer was injured and taken to hospital after a vehicle he was patrolling in was struck by a vehicle driven by a man who had just stolen an impounded car at the Moran Towing car pound,

Det. Sgt. Michael Gontarczuk, of the Kearny Police Department, told The Observer last week. On Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8:25 p.m., Moran staffers told police they observed (on their cameras) a burglar hopping a fence onto their property, at which time they called the KPD. Four officers then responded.

Moran staff provided a detailed description of the burglar, who at this point had stolen a vehicle from the property and was fleeing. As officers arrived, one officer spotted the burglar forcing open a gate out of Moran. As this occurred, the suspect jumped into

A brand new police vehicle, similar to the one seen here, was totaled in the crash.

Roger Kabler stunningly ‘reincarnates’ Robin Williams By JoAnn Barton Special to The Observer

The holidays, somehow, are rapidly approaching again and if you have family or friends in town for Thanksgiving, you may want to take a trip across the river to New York to see Roger Kabler off Broadway in his spiritual journey of encompassing the undeniably talented Robin Williams. Kabler, an actor, writer, comedian, producer, artist and impressionist also appeared in the repertory company on the Carol Burnett Show. He then

landed the leading role in the sitcom on NBC, “Rhythm & Blues” and was also the Zima man in Zima commercials. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kabler on Applause Radio Show and found him to be serious and yet insanely funny. I also had the opportunity to watch his film, “Being Robin: The Movie.” It is the story of how a man was diagnosed bipolar, and how succumbing to substance abuse from his Hollywood lifestyle would one day be reincarnated as Robin Williams. It is a

ON APPLAUSE RADIO SHOW touching story of how Kabler fought with demons, including the demon of Williams. Williams, not necessarily a demo, would battle to fight being Williams and being himself. In the end, Williams would just take over his body and speak to him. Williams came to Kabler to finish what Williams could not and he does a phenomenal job doing so.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LANDSCAPING It boils down to curb appeal, and let’s face it: landscaping is one of the first things potential buyers notice when pulling up to look at a home for sale. A neglected lawn sticks out like a sore thumb and can be a turn-off. As a general rule, the more expensive the house, the more money and attention the owners should spend on landscaping. Real estate agents agree that the outside of a home attracts buyers into the inside of the home. Remember that spending money on landscaping ultimately adds more value to a property. Homeowners can mow, mulch, and edge; however, for bigger jobs, such as

planting, pruning, or cutting down trees, it’s best to bring in a professional. Most buyers find that a beautifully landscaped yard is hard to resist and leaves them begging for a closer look inside. We are adept at making suggestions that can enhance your home’s surroundings to its best advantage. Find out where our reputation as well-respected, seasoned professionals comes from. We’ve made our 55+ years of experience work for hundreds and hundreds of happy buyers and sellers, now let them work for you. “Our success has been built one satisfied customer at a time.”

shortly thereafter, which is still being investigated (likely one of the party-leavers based on the time frame, but it’s still too early to determine). Officers later learned the mother of the juvenile who threw the party was home throughout it and was well aware of the goings-on inside her home. Apparently, the juvenile attendees were also being charged an entrance fee to use the residence as a venue for consuming marijuana and alcohol. The adult woman, whose name is being withheld to protect the identity of the juvenile, was charged with charging admission fee to patrons consuming alcoholic beverages, making property available for underage alcohol consumption, maintaining a nuisance — a condition that endangers safety or health of a considerable number of persons, maintaining a nuisance — gathering for purposes of engaging in unlawful conduct, endangering another person — risk of bodily injury to another, distribution on alcoholSee KPD, Page 18

n the heart of the Zentai Martial Arts community, a profound sense of unity and commitment echoed throughout a recent weekend as those days were dedicated to celebrating achievements and challenging growth and confidence all while cherishing the essence of family. On the first day, Zentai celebrated its Mega Belt promotions. This was a day of great significance when our dedicated students not only showcased their martial arts skills but their courtesy, integrity and self-control, the school says. Zentai Martial Arts, serving over 700 families across four locations joined together at Riverside County Park, Lyndhurst, as the martial artists they demonstrated form, sparred with teammates and persevered in board breaks. “This was more than just a spectacle of Martial Arts — it’s an empowering, heartfilled tribute to the dedication and hard work that forms the backbone of Zentai Martial Arts,” the organizers say. “For our Black Belts, it’s a moment to excel

OPINION & VIEWPOINTS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Long: Dems and GOP are all equally awful To the Editor: I enjoyed reading Andrew Miller’s recent letter in The Observer for the week of Oct. 9, and as well, do not refer to locally, where the main issue is to keep taxes low and prevent your car from being broken into. It is comical to think Republicans who have made gerrymandering an art form will protect my freedoms, but frightening to think our freedoms are in the hands of a twisted, little creep like Senator Lindsay Graham of South Carolina. I agree with Mr. Miller that both parties do not deserve our vote. I stopped voting for these two parties in 1988 when I realized how corrupt both were. The only exception was in 2004 when I voted for Sen. John F. Kerry because I thought it so important to get (George W.) Bush out after his lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, even though Democrats went along with it almost unanimously. Corruption or not, how can only two parties represent a country as populated and diverse as the United States? They can’t, they don’t and won’t. We need more parties. The behavior of both the

Dems and GOP is sickening. They are like two gangs, the Bloods and Crypts, and spend more time trying to destroy each other rather than looking out for average Americans. This ever-escalating childish behavior we see in the halls of Congress continues to astound and I don’t think any parent would tolerate it from their 4-year-old. So why is it tolerated in the voting booth? Self-preservation is the number one goal of these politicians, followed by party preservation and their allegiance to oil, Wall Street, big pharma, etc. What is good for these entities is bad for the American people and the world. The voting hoi polloi is lost, so it is ridiculous to continue this exercise in futility of “I am mad at the GOP so now I will vote Democratic” or “I am mad at the Democrats so now I will vote GOP.” And it is silly to say you hate one party but like the other. What do voters expect to happen differently by continuing to vote for these parties? One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. The two parties know they will always have the votes, so there is no impetus for change. The notion of voting for the lesser of the two evils (which acknowledges how bad the Democrats and Republicans are) is intellectually lazy and will only make the hole deeper

and wider and unable to crawl out of. Thomas Jefferson said we need a revolution every 25 years. Translated: vote them out. Richard D Long North Arlington

McGinley: Thanks for retort to Rogers To the Editor: I am writing to thank Paul L. LaClair for his op-ed Sept. 27, 2023 response to the op-ed written by Steven L. Rogers on Sept. 20, 2023. Thank you Mr. LaClair for pointing out Mr. Rogers’ right-wing false narrative about what Democrats have done to jeopardize democracy. I read Mr. Rogers’ opinions while shaking my head at how frequently he projected all the negativities being

espoused by his delusional MAGA colleagues. What especially tells the tale of how disingenuous Mr. Rogers is, is the fact he never mentions the Republican cult leader he so vociferously defended and supported during his entire written diatribe. Our country and democracy will not survive another MAGA-lunatic presidency in my opinion, and in the opinion of the majority of voters who did not vote for him in the last election. I encourage people who want to live in a free and democratic society to be certain to vote in every election. Right now, local elections are being hijacked by “crazies” who when the time comes will again launch our country into chaos when they lose again in 2024. The majesty of this country is not in blind loyalty to a person or group. The Constitution guides and supports the bedrock of

what we should be trying to achieve-a more perfect union. If you see everyone who disagrees with you as the enemy, you want to live in a dictatorship not a democracy. I’m certain some readers may see my response as just another “woke” liberal, but I would rather be awake and ready to defend democracy, than to follow a leader or group who wants to put everyone who thinks differently from them to sleep. Wake up America! “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew. HCCC & Metallica celebrate 2nd year of collaboration By Kevin A. Canessa Jr.

A

kc@theobserver.com

s Metallica rocked its stadium tour, the heavy metal titans also celebrated the fifth year of its foundation’s All Within My Hands (AWMH) Metallica Scholars Initiative. The band’s multimillion-dollar investment in critical workforce programs at community colleges throughout the nation is expanding, and Hudson County Community College was invited to return for a second year to continue receiving funding to enhance career and technical education. “The Metallica Scholars Initiative is so important to us because we are seeing results. Five years in, with the help of community colleges across the country, we are helping people fill these essential jobs which require skills and training. We are so proud and grateful that we can facilitate this program,” Metallica’s Lars Ulrich said. Launched by Metallica’s Foundation AWMH in 2019, the Metallica Scholars

Initiative, in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges, marks its fifth year with an expansion into new curricula. The initiative now directly supports 42 community colleges across 33 states, and will help an estimated 6,000 students pursuing careers in the trades by the end of this year. Metallica and AWMH have invested over $6 million in the American workforce. Returning colleges like HCCC play an integral role in helping guide the success of the eleven community colleges joining the roster of veteran schools this fall, the college’s president says. The American Welding Society estimates a shortage of 400,000 welding professionals by 2025. HCCC received $100,000 from the Metallica Scholars Initiative in 2022 and $50,000 in 2023 to provide a pathway to welding careers for 21 previously incarcerated individuals. The college says the life-changing HCCC program is offered in partnership

with the New Jersey Reentry Corporation and the Governor’s Reentry Training and Employment Center in South Kearny. Funding provides students with tuition, textbooks, materials, Occupational Health and Safety Administration training, consumables, helmets, safety glasses, jackets and exam fees for American Welding Society certification. Graduates of the HCCC program say completing the welding training has given them a second chance. “In the past, I made a mistake that led to consequences that put a temporary stop to me becoming the man I always wanted to be,” Anthony, a student in the program, said. “This new opportunity gives me a chance at redemption. I am

7

the most focused I have ever been, 42 years old and I have no room for error.” Monique, meanwhile, another student, says she dropped out of cosmetology and liberal arts studies to pursue a welding certification after learning the trade on the job. “My boss would make makeshift blueprints that I was able to follow. Now I can obtain my certification and learn how to read an official blueprint. With this line of work, employers are more concerned with the skill as opposed to the conviction,” she said. Volkan is a Turkish immigrant who has a college degree in economics, worked in banking and owned a gas station before alcoholism wreaked havoc on his life. “It was during my stay in rehab that I discovered welding, which I had seen on YouTube before but had never thought of as a career,” he said. “I am still learning and I believe that I will be incredibly happy in my new career. I am grateful for this opportunity to make a change and start afresh.”

Over the course of the regular season Kearny showed it had the physical talent and depth to make another deep run in the state tournament. The last week showed this group also had the mental toughness and resolve to thrive in the biggest spots. With back-to-back overtime victories the Kearny boys soccer team eliminated all doubt about its mental toughness. First, it defeated Livingston, 1-0 in the North 1, Group 4 semifinals on Wednesday. Then, on Saturday against a Clifton team ranked No. 6 in the state, the Kardinals once again rose to the occasion as Benji Silva’s goal in the 82nd minute gave Kearny a 2-1 victory at Rossi Field in Clifton. For Kearny, it is the program’s fourth North 1, Group

4 title since 2016. The Kardinals will now host North 2, Group 4 champion Westfield in the Group 4 semifinals on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Harvey Field with the winner moving on to Saturday’s state final at Kean University at 10 a.m. “You get glimpses of (the mental toughness) during the regular season for sure,” Kearny head coach Bill Galka said. “But in a tournament situation where you can be knocked out and have it be your last game, you see they have good mental strength. “They certainly have a big belief in themselves that when they get into a situation where you either stay in it or you’re knocked out that they certainly pull together. Obviously the last two games, they’ve stayed strong and got it done.”

SIlva showed that resolve in the overtime. After Clifton tied the game at 1-1 in the 73rd minute, the versatile sophomore had a chance to end the game, but his scissors kick shot hit the post and cut across the goal mouth without going in. Overtime gave Silva and the Kardinals another chance. Guilherme Xavier flicked a Kearny throw-in to Denilson Salinas, who sent a cross to the left side intended for Silva. A Clifton defender got in front of the cross, but his clearing attempt was not hit cleanly, allowing Silva to field it at the top of the 18, took one touch, then sent a right-footed shot into the lower-left corner of the net for the clinching goal. It was the ninth goal of the See SOCCER, Page 10

last two, three weeks and you could see her consistently getting better,” said Vivino. “She’s so talented with the ball on her feet that we sometimes take for granted how much of the field she sees. That was really that big step up. Just seeing the field, knowing where her teammates were going to be, not where they were at the moment. She was thinking a step or two ahead and that was a big factor in (our success).”

That chemistry with her teammates, in particular fellow senior Lia Cruz has been vital to North Arlington’s offense for four years. Cruz and Teixeira have been teammates since before high school and have displayed a rare on-field bond and chemistry. That chemistry has been especially prevalent of late as, in an effort to reduce the wear and tear on her leg, Teixeira has played more time up top alongside Cruz, and less at the attacking midfield spot she started the season at. “Me and Lia have been playing for years now, even before high school,” Teixeira said. “We’ve always been told that ‘you guys have amazing chemistry together, you play so well together,’ so coming into high school we knew the advantage we had and what we were capable of.” Teixeira, Cruz and the rest of the Vikings look to continue their playoff run on Monday when it hosts Cedar Grove in a quarterfinal matchup held after our deadline. With a win, North Arlington would face the Hasbrouck Heights-Mountain Lakes winner in the semifinals on Thursday.

PSE&G announces this week’s projects in Kearny

D

uring the week of Nov. 6, from Monday to Thursday, PSE&G crews will: l Replace gas main on Belgrove Drive from Patterson Street to Park Avenue l Replace gas main on Grant Avenue from Johnston Avenue to Belgrove Drive. l Replace gas main on John Street from Johnston to Woodland avenues, (Tuesday – Thursday) l Replace gas services on Highland Avenue from Rose to Patterson streets The project is part of the PSE&G Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP) to replace aging cast iron and unprotected steel gas mains in order to support a safe, clean and reliable gas system. The mains and services will be replaced with stronger more durable materials which are much less likely to have leaks and release methane gas. The new elevated pressure systems also enable the installation of excess flow valves that dramatically reduce gas flow if a service line is damaged and provides better support for the use of high-efficiency appliances.

The Observer’s office is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please feel free to visit us during our regular hours of operation or call (201) 991-1600.

CRASH

Continued from Page 1 the car he stole from the Moran yard and swerved into the officer, nearly striking him. The fleeing vehicle’s headlights were off and the driver reportedly took off at a high rate of speed, passing another officer who was responding to the scene. At this point, another officer was also responding to the scene. As the reckless vehicle was coming at him, he came to a complete stop in his lane and did not attempt to block the path of the oncoming vehicle. Unfortunately, however, the suspect swerved right into the oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into the officer. Police were fortunately able to capture the burglar, who, naturally, refused to show police his hands and refused to exit the vehicle. Ultimately, police were able to extract the burglar from the vehicle and handcuff him.

The Observer n www.theobserver.com The officer who was struck head-on was taken to hospital and an ambulance was called for the burglar as well. The burglar was uncooperative and did not accept medical aid. Georgy R. Charles, 34, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer with bodily injury, aggravated assault on a police officer, motor-vehicle theft, eluding police and burglary. He was additionally issued summonses charging reckless driving, careless driving, failing to maintain his lane, failure to possess a driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle. Charles was remanded to the Hudson County Jail. The officer in the crash was later released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries. Police say they are hopeful the officer’s injuries won’t be permanent in any form. Both the vehicle the suspect took from Moran and the KPD unit (which was brand new) were likely totaled.
