Arnesman is a graduate of Kinnelon High School. He then went on to get a bachelor’s degree from Montclair State University and became an EMT.

“Kevin does a lot of things for the department that really are those thankless jobs,” Police Chief George King said after the trio were sworn-in.

Bryan Hennig, former Lyndhurst FD chief, current Bergen fire marshal, dies

The Township of Lyndhurst, the Lyndhurst Fire Department and the Bergen County Fire Marshal’s Office is mourning the loss of one of its own.

Bryan R. Hennig died peacefully surrounded by his brother-in-law and sister Barbara and Steven Sparta at Saturday morning, Aug. 26, at his home in Lyndhurst after a fierce, five-week battle with liver cancer, Paul F. Haggerty, the Lyndhurst first assistant fire chief and deputy fire commissioner and police department lieutenant, announced.

Hennig had a storied career with the Lyndhurst FD.

He first joined the department on June 2, 1981 and was made chief of the department on May 21, 1994. He has served as a Bergen County fire

marshal since 2005 was the president of the NJ and NY Volunteer Firefighters Association at the time of his death, a position he undertook just two months ago, Haggerty says.

He was also a deputy county mutual fire aid coordinator.

“Today is a dark day in the Township of Lyndhurst and in the Bergen County fire service community,” Haggerty said.

“Bryan’s passing leaves a large void in not only the Lyndhurst FD, but the entire County of Bergen and beyond, as Bryan brought so much to the fire service. Bryan’s character and professionalism is something all should aspire to exhibit within public safety.”

Mayor Robert B. Giangeruso was devastated over Hennig’s loss, echoing Haggerty’s statements, affirming “Chief Hennig’s selfless service to the township and the fire service

KPD: Woman speeding because she says was in a hurry to get to MVC to restore suspended driver’s license instead gets arrested

On Aug. 23, Det. John Fabula and Det. Sgt. Mike Gontarczuk were moving about slowly in traffic on Kearny Avenue near Midland Avenue when they saw a silver Toyota operating at a high rate of speed, passing cars (including their unmarked police vehicle) on the right to skip traffic.

Evelin Vittes, 58, of Kearny, was pulled over and the two detectives learned her driver’s license was both expired and suspended and she did not have a valid insurance card.

She told the detectives she was in a hurry to go to the NJMVC to fix her suspended license and thus, this was her rationale for speeding and improperly passing vehicles, all while driving without a license.

She was arrested, taken to KPD HQ, charged with driving on suspended

license, driving unlicensed, failure to possess an insurance card and improper passing and released with court date.

A properly licensed driver took custody of her vehicle. 

A man who police say has been a somewhat regular nuisance to the Kearny Avenue business community in the southern end of town was arrested on an outstanding warrant Aug. 17, Det. Sgt. Michal Gontarczuk said.

Businesses on Kearny Avenue had been complaining about Stephen McCourt, 62, of Kearny, for quality of life violations for some time, Gontarczuk said.

Officers have been issuing summonses to McCourt for a period of time for public drinking, public urination and defecation and other issues.

On Aug. 17, bicycle Officers Mat Lopez and Cort Montanino observed McCourt on Kearny Avenue and were

aware of a $1,000 warrant issued by Kearny Municipal Court for McCourt’s arrest and as such, he was taken into custody and remanded to the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny.

On Aug. 17, Officers Jean-Paul Duran and Jordan Miranda were dispatched to the Walmart store on a domestic dispute. On arrival, the officers say they met with a man who works for Walmart, who told them a woman he previously dated came to his job and reportedly started verbal argument, and when the man attempted to walk away, she began pulling his shirt.

She also knocked a soft drink bottle out of the man’s hands and took his cell phone, alighting to the bathrooms with it.

The man sustained a minor chest injury during the incident.

Jacqueline S. Villanueva, 24, of Newark, was arrested and taken to KPD HQ, where she was charged with assault and then transferred to the County.

On Aug. 18, DEA Task Force officers were conducting a surveillance operation on Hackensack Avenue in South Kearny when they reportedly observed individuals in possession of a firearm and seized a Glock 19, a high-capacity magazine, hollow-point rounds and regular rounds (some 40 caliber, some 9mm).

Officer Darwin Paulino, of the Kearny PD, assisted.

Thank you, Mayor Fife & Councilman Bennett for your help: Rodriguez

To the Editor:

I am writing this letter in appreciation for Mayor James A. Fife and Councilman Larry Bennett.

This past year, my family and I went through some very, very tough times, and I needed help to get through them. A friend of mine spoke to Councilman Bennett on my behalf because he is known

for helping the community, and the councilman along with Mayor Fife, took the time out of their busy schedules to get to know my issues and did everything humanly possible to help me and my family get back on track.

I didn’t want the remainder of this year to go by without publicly thanking Mayor Fife and Councilman Bennett for not only helping me but for taking time out of their busy schedules to actually listen to me, respond to my needs and genuinely make me feel like a valued human being.

At a time in our country’s

history when politicians are seen as being selfish and uncaring, I want you all to know how truly unselfish and caring Mayor Fife and Councilman Bennett are. Thank you.

Trump must be held accountable for his lies about 2020 election: Zeleya

To the Editor: “All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes.”

That’s what (former) President Donald J. Trump said to Georgia’s secretary of state when he was pressuring him to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state of Georgia.

This is just one piece of the evidence that led a grand jury of everyday Georgians to indict the former president and key allies – including his lawyers Rudolph W. Giuliani and John Eastman and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows –on 41 criminal charges for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.

Trump led a criminal conspiracy that included 18 co-defendants and 30 unindicted co-conspirators to commit fraud and illegally reverse the will of Georgia voters, even though Trump and his team already knew

he’d lost.

When all else failed, the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection was Trump’s last desperate attempt to cling to power. Elected officials and law enforcement officers were attacked, simply for doing their jobs — acting on the will of the people and certifying the election results.

It was violent, destructive and in some cases, fatal.

There can be no more serious crime than a conspiracy to overturn the foundation of our democracy itself: the vote of the American people. Fame, fortune and former office cannot and should not prevent someone from standing trial and being held accountable for their crimes.

NA counterfeiter pleads guilty: U.S. Att’y

Alocal man is one of three from New Jersey who have admitted their roles in a conspiracy to traffic counterfeit computernetworking devices, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced Aug. 24.

Musa Karaman, 35, of North Arlington, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner in Trenton federal court to an information charging him with one count of trafficking in counterfeit goods.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 4, 2024.

Two others from elsewhere in Jersey were also charged.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court:

From September 2017 through May 2021, Karaman, and two co-conspirators formed and operated

numerous entities selling computer-networking equipment, including networking devices manufactured by Cisco Systems Inc., a major U.S. technology conglomerate.

Although the defendants advertised the Cisco products they offered for sale as new and genuine, the products were, instead, counterfeit devices they procured from various overseas suppliers at well below market prices and resold at higher prices.

The offense of trafficking in counterfeit goods carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $2 million.

Sellinger credited special agents of Homeland Security Investigations Newark, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel and others with clearing the case.

community is what exemplifies a true leader and public servant. This is a terrible loss too soon for our residents and those residing within the county and the state.”

Bergen County Executive James J. Tedesco III says Hennig was so much more than just a valued colleague in the fire service.

“On behalf of the County of Bergen, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family of County Fire Marshal Bryan Hennig, a dedicated public servant and a cherished member of our community,” Tedesco said. “Bryan Hennig’s journey of service began with his role as a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of Lyndhurst where he proudly served as chief. It was during this time that I first came to know Bryan, as he tirelessly dedicated himself to the safety and wellbeing of his community.

“Bryan’s unwavering commitment to Bergen County spanned nearly two decades. For 18 years, Chief Hennig played a pivotal

role at the Law and Public Safety Institute. He started as a fire instructor, molding the next generation of firefighters with his knowledge and passion. After being elected County Executive, I had the pleasure of working closely with Chief Hennig and promoted him to the role of County Fire Marshal, where he served for his final nine years with the same unwavering dedication.

“But Bryan was more than just a colleague; he was a dear friend to everyone in the fire service. His influence reached beyond the professional realm, leaving an indelible mark on the careers and lives of those he touched.

“Today, as we mourn his passing, we recognize the profound loss felt by his loved ones, his fire family and the entire Bergen County community. Bryan Hennig’s legacy of service, his camaraderie and his unwavering dedication will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace, dear friend.”

Lyndhurst volleyball hopes to ride the wave of summer league success

Last week marked the beginning of tryouts for most fall sports and as the Lyndhurst girls volleyball began practice last Monday, they did so with plenty of momentum and confidence already built up.

Just four days earlier the Golden Bears had wrapped up a flawless run in the Harrison Summer League. Not only did Lyndhurst go 16-0 in the league, defeating Hudson Catholic in the title game, they did it without dropping a single set all summer.

“We finished off pretty well last season and we were very young last season as well. We had a lot of sophomore starters so I definitely wanted to pick right up where we left off last year,” Lyndhurst head coach Steve Vahalla said. “I think the Harrison Summer League was definitely a perfect opportunity to showcase where we want to be and where I can see where we’re leaning towards.

“I wouldn’t say I was surprised (with how we played), but I’m very, very happy though with how we turned the corner

this summer.”

With five starters back from last year’s 14-12 team Vahalla and Lyndhurst had plenty of reasons for optimism even before its summer league performance.

Among the returners are both outside hitters, senior Allanis Rodriguez and junior Yasemin Ugurlu.

The 5-foot-9 Ugurlu, who qualified for the Outdoor Meet of Champions in the Triple Jump this past spring, led the team in kills last fall with 97 and is poised to emerge as one of North Jersey’s better hitters.

Said Vahalla, “Yasemin is definitely going to be our top hitter, one of the top hitters in the league and maybe even the county.”

The 5-foot-7 Rodriguez showed considerable growth throughout her junior season, her first playing volleyball and Vahalla believes she’ll be that much better after posting 93 kills and a team-best 201 digs last year.

In the middle, 5-foot-11 junior Asya Akar begins her third year as a starter after recording 90 kills and 128 digs to go with

a team leading 65 blocks and 48 aces.

Between Akar, Ugurlu and 5-foot-11 middle blocker Sofia Hechavarria, the Golden Bears should have one of the tallest front lines in the NJIC.

“I would definitely say this is the tallest front line that I have,” Valhalla said. “A few years ago when we made the Group 1 sectional final I had Maryanne Ijeh and she was about 6-2, but across the line, this is definitely the tallest line I’ve had.”

Hechavarria, a sophomore, saw some varsity time last year with 13 blocks. Also in the middle, rotating with Hechavarria will be junior Gianna DeCoro, who also saw a decent amount of varsity minutes last year with 17 kills and 22 blocks.

Another returning starter for Lyndhurst is 5-foot-7 senior Bryanna Pando, who had 42 kills and 41 blocks.

Back at setter is junior returning starter Kiana Marizan. The 5-foot-5 Marizan had 222 assists a year ago.

Messi Mania comes to Harrison

They came from all over the country, many wearing pink Inter Miami soccer jerseys donning the No. 10 of Lionel Messi.

Messi Mania had come to Harrison and despite not starting Saturday night’s game, the Argentinian soccer legend didn’t disappoint the legions of fans, many of whom paid hundreds of dollars to see a glimpse of the great Messi.

In the 89th minute, Messi showed why he is considered one of the greatest soccer players of all time, as he scored a jaw-dropping goal in Inter Miami’s 2-0 victory over the Red Bulls in front of a sell out crowd at Red Bull Arena.

Messi received the ball inside the box and with three Red Bull defenders closing

in, dished a touch pass to the right between two of them and to Benjamin Cremaschi. Cremaschi crossed it back to Messi in front of the net, who scored the goal much to the delight of the crowd and even to the awe of his teammates.

“I just catch myself watching him instead of picking up on my assignment,” said Kamal Miller, a defender on Miami. “It’s tough to stay focused when you have such a great presence.”

It was the perfect ending for one of the most anticipated matches in MLS history and the hottest ticket for a game at Red Bull Arena since its opening.

Most games, a fan can log onto an online ticket broker the morning of a match and purchase tickets for less than $20 apiece. For Lionel Messi?

Good luck finding one for less

than $400 with plenty of fans paying upwards of $1,000 for lower level seats.

According to a statement released by the Red Bulls prior to Saturday’s match, fans from 33 different states had bought tickets for that night’s game, some of those tickets going for as much as $10,000 on the resale market.

Normally half-full lots were filled to capacity hours before the 7:30 p.m.kickoff and is there was any doubt as to why, you were sure to see a tailgate with fan hanging banners or wearing his blue and white Argentina National Team

jersey.

The 26,276-seat stadium was filled to capacity an hour before the start and they were initially greeted with the disappointment of learning Messi would not be in the starting lineup.

Within the first five minutes of the match, the chants of “we want Messi!” rang throughout the stadium.

Early in the second half, when Messi took off his pinny and started warming up down the sidelines, did it become clear that the hundreds of dollars spent would not go to waste. He entered the game in the 60th minute to a deafening roar.

The 36-year-old attacking midfielder, is considered by many to be the greatest soccer player in history Between his professional career - mostly with Barcelona - and international career, Messi has scored more than 800 career goals.

He is a seven time recipient of the Ballon d’Or trophy, which is given to the best men’s soccer player each year by the French news magazine France Football. No other player has won it more than five times.

In 2022, Messi led Argentina to its first World Cup championship in 36 years, defeating France in a penalty shootout. Messi was named the recipient of the Golden Ball awarded to the player of the tournament, becoming the first player to ever win the award twice.

Since making his debut with Inter Miami on July 21, Messi has scored 11 goals in nine games, the first 10 of them as part of the Leagues Cup as well as the U.S. Open Cup. Saturday marked Messi’s formal MLS debut.

AND IT’S WARNING SIGNS

Although generally developing in older adults, glioblastoma, the aggressive cancer of the brain or spinal cord, can occur at any age. One of the first warning signs is lingering headaches unresponsive to standard remedies, followed by onset of seizures, unexplained nausea, confusion, balance issues, blurred vision, mood changes, and memory loss. Although glioblastoma is extremely difficult to treat, an early neurological exam at the outset of symptoms improves prognosis. Using MRI, CT, or PET scans, neurologists determine the size and location of the glioblastoma, perform a biopsy, and determine the course of treatment. Because surgical removal of the entire glioblastoma is impossible as it grows

into brain tissue, radiation and chemotherapy treatment may be necessary.

New treatments are extending life expectancy for glioblastoma patients. As a cure for glioblastoma is still to be found, it’s important that medical practitioners work hard to ensure that those affected by glioblastoma continue to live longer and longer. To schedule an appointment, please call PREMIER CARE ASSOCIATES OF WEST HUDSON at 201-998-7474. We are located at 512 Kearny Ave., Suite B, where walk-in patients are always welcome 7 days a week.

Belleville promotes several in public safety to new ranks

Ajoint ceremony to mark promotions in the Belleville police and fire departments was a celebration of those who work hard each day to keep the township residents and visitors safe and secure. The nine members of the police department and eight members of the fire department who were receiving promotions were greeted with rousing applause, hugs and smiles from residents, friends and family members.

“Belleville is proud of these brave first responders who have dedicated their lives to safeguarding our communities,” Township Manager Anthony Iacono said. “We must never lose sight of their commitment, dedication and acts of heroism, no matter how small or great.”

Police Chief Mark Minichini announced Pasquale Complitano has been promoted to captain; Matthew

Dox, Cheryl Lopez and Gary Devito have been promoted to lieutenant; and Anthony Damico, Andy Jimenez, Michael Povinelli, Steven Plumer and Justin Versprill have been promoted to sergeant.

Fire Chief John Olivieri announced

William Hands, Steven Salzer, Brian Salmon, Francis Alfano and Jose Perez have been promoted to battalion chief; and Tyler Quarantiello, Carl Piscatowski and Joseph Lunelli have been promoted to lieutenant.

“These promotions are well-earned,”

Minichini said. “The members of the police and fire departments whose promotions were recognized at this ceremony have conducted themselves with the utmost professionalism and demonstrated an uncommon dedication to Belleville.”

In addition to the promotions, six new Belleville firefighters were sworn in during the ceremony.

Olivieri said Vincent Agosta, Brian Antonio, Andrew Brenneman, Anthony Cifelli, Zaid Hassen and Nicholas Marques are joining a department that is “close-knit and ever-vigilant.”

“We welcome these new recruits into what really is a family,” Olivieri said. “We look out for one another while we are looking out for the people of Belleville.”

The ranks of the police department will soon be growing, as well. Iacono said 10 recruits are undergoing training at Essex County’s police training academy.

she won the setter job and stepped right in,” said Vahalla..” She has done a great job ever since.”

Junior Selen Akman (5-foot6) takes over as the starting libero, after seeing some time on the back line last year.

Lyndhurst will also count upon senior Faith Arroyo and Jaylen Ayala to provide depth on the backline as is Emilia Kot as an outside or opposite hitter.

The Golden Bears begin the regular season on Sept. 7 at Dwight-Englewood. The next five matches are all set to be at home, a slate that includes perennial small school powers Secaucus and Rutherford.

Last year, Lyndhurst started the season slow, only to win 12 of its final 17 matches. This season, Valhalla is hopeful that

they’ll ride this momentum and not only earn a high seed in the state tournament, but also qualify and potentially win a match in the prestigious Bergen County Tournament.

If they do, this past summer is sure to be a big reason.

“The summer league definitely helped in building confidence, building teamwork and building that momentum,” Valhalla said. “Even watching this first week (or practice), they’re leaps and bounds ahead of where they were last year.”

EYE CARE

HOW DOES TEMPORAL ARTERITIS AFFECT VISION?

Temporal arteritis is a form of vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels) in which the temporal arteries (the blood vessels near the temples) become inflamed, restricting blood flow from the heart to the scalp. When the posterior ciliary arteries are affected, it can limit blood flow to the eyes and cause vision problems. It almost always occurs in patients over the age of 50, with twice as many women affected than men. The most common symptom is a chronic, throbbing headache. Other symptoms are abrupt headaches, episodes of sudden vision loss, and jaw pain after chewing or talking. Depending on which part of the eye

is affected, restricted blood flow can lead to vision loss or blindness.

Although there is no cure for temporal arteritis, the condition can be treated with medications. Temporal arteritis should be treated as soon as possible to prevent further damage caused by poor blood flow. To schedule an appointment, please call 201-896-0096. We are located at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst. To reach our optical shop, call 201-896-0007. We accept most insurance.

P.S. Rapid treatment of temporal arteritis is crucial to preserving vision. Treatment often involves taking high doses of corticosteroid drugs like prednisone. www.delucavision.com

Continued from Page 4

The two suspects, Keith L. Williams, 53, of Jersey City, and Carlos H. Malave Bonilla, 57, of North Arlington, were both arrested.

Williams was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device (high capacity magazine) whilst Malave was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a prohibited device (high capacity magazine) and possession of a prohibited device (hollow point ammunition).

Both men remanded to the Hudson County Jail.

On Aug. 20, at 3:30 a.m., John Bunalski, 55, of Kearny was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes inside a Kearny residence.

Officers Bryan San Martin, David Vazquez and Sgt. Sean Kelly responded there on a report of a dispute. There, it was determined Bunalski had assaulted a person he resided with, using a cane as a weapon in the assault.

And, after being processed, Bunalski was released on his own recognizance, pending court.

On Aug. 20, just before 8 a.m., a man who is well known in town was arrested again after he reportedly wouldn’t leave a business where he wasn’t wanted.

Daniel P. McKeown, 55, of Kearny, was charged with making terroristic threats at a Kearny Avenue business.

Officer Alvaro Goncalves, Andre Fernandes and Sgt. Phil Finch responded to the business after getting a report the business did not want McKeown on the property, as he had been causing issues for them recently

An employee says while McKeown is usually just a nuisance to customers and staff, this time he threatened to kill an employee, called them racial slurs, swung a glass door aggressively at them and got in the employee’s face, threatening to kill her.

A witness, who was a customer in the store, corroborated the statement.

McKeown was arrested, taken to KPD HQ and charged. He was also found to have an active warrant out of Jersey City and so he was remanded to the County, (where this will unfortunately do absolutely nothing to deter future incidents.)

On Aug. 21, officers were dispatched to Kearny Avenue and Halstead Street on a report of man asleep at the wheel. Officer Tom Collins says he observed a white Jeep in the intersection, not moving, when the light cycled. Sgt. Kelly and Officer Vazquez backed Collins up.

One of the officers removed the key from its ignition, and officers say they had trouble rousing the individual, later identified as Holbein J. Gamboa, 46, of Kearny.

Officers say he appeared disoriented, with redness around the eyes and reeked of alcohol.

When he was asked to get out of the vehicle, he stumbled. When he did exit, a cup of brown alcoholic beverage was observed in the vehicle, which the man claimed was just “water.”

Gamboa reportedly refused to cooperate with field-sobriety testing and was arrested for DWI based on observations thus far.

Then at KPD HQ, he reportedly refused an Alco breath test.

In all, he was charged with drunken driving, reckless driving, possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle and refusal to submit to a chemical breath test.

But, not to worry, after all of this uncooperative behavior, he was released on his own recognizance to responsible party when all was said and done.

On June 29, a victim reported

$3,000 was withdrawn from her account at an ATM at Chase Bank at 11 Kearny Ave. The same actor, it was later learned, attempted the same crime in Bergenfield and was arrested there.

Det. Kyle Plaugic followed up and used communications-data warrants to prove the same actor was the one who stole the money from Kearny and who withdrew her money from the ATM.

Det. Plaugic then charged Dozzion Branch, 23, of Chicago, with receiving stolen property, theft and ID theft, on Aug. 21.

A complaint was issued and a court date scheduled, but it is not known whether Branch is still in Jersey. Gontarczuk says it is unlikely Branch would be extradited from Illinois for these offenses.

than 2,000 hours of his time before he was hired to become a full-time Kearny cop.

In 2013, he went through a second police academy and then was assigned to the pa-

trol division.

“There was a short stint in the evidence room and the Detective Bureau and then ultimately he was assigned to the chief’s staff doing a lot of administrative work,” King said. “When COVID hit, a lot of things changed. And we had COVID funding, we

had grant resources, grant management and Kevin was tasked with managing all of that. And we were very successful in our grant program, very successful in managing COVID, managing the money and the funds that we got. So most of that was due to Kevin’s hard work.”

Sgt. Ryan Stickno

Stickno, elevated from patrolman to sergeant, was born and raised in Kearny and is the brother of another officer, Alan Stickno.

King joked as he first spoke of Ryan, who is tall in stature.

“It’s always tough when I have to put a badge on some-

body that makes me look kind of really short, so I thank you for that tonight,” the chief kidded.

Stickno went to St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City and then St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, both Jesuit institutions.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administraion and joined the Kearny PD in 2017.

Ryan, you very quickly distinguished yourself as somebody who you could rely on, you could use for other things and you could use as a training officer,” King said of Stickno. “He was a mentor and he quickly became a field-training officer. So we task field-training officers with the responsibility of training new officers when they come out of the police academy. They rotate through a series of officers and they’re responsible for the initial training those officers received. And Ryan has done an exceptional job. He he distinguishes himself there. He’s one of the officers I can say anytime we assign somebody to him, they come out a good officer, pretty squared away.”

Stickno is a firearms instructor and is a member of the Hudson County Regional SWAT team. In 2022, Stickno was selected by his peers as the Police Officer of the Year. He is also known for his work in rifle and active-shooter training for other members of the department.

“I know you’re going to be a great supervisor, and I wish you all the luck” King said.

Sgt. Michael Andrews

Andrews, promoted from detective to sergeant, was born and raised in town and is a graduate of Kearny High School, and played on a state championship soccer team in his days as a Kardinal. He went on to Kean University

and he played soccer at the college level.

In 2005, Andrews took the civil-service test and began his law-enforcement career in corrections.

After going to the academy a second time, he was assigned to the Kearny PD’s patrol division. He became a detective in the Vice Unit a short time after.

“And I can tell you Mike did a ton of work in the Vice Unit, thousands of investigations and arrests during his time there. So those guys did a great job working a lot of undercover, a lot of narcotics work at the time,” King said.

In 2015, he was the Police Officer of the Year.

Then in 2018, King formed the Street Crimes Unit, which was designed to go out and to address quality of life issues throughout town.

“Mike was one of the officers that were selected for that. Tough job to do, especially nowadays, in today’s environment to be proactive, do the job. But you know at that time, he stepped up, did the job, a lot of it, again, a lot of arrests, a lot of good work and the work that they did helped to make community safer place,” King said.

After that, he was elevated to the Detective Bureau.

“While he was in the Detective Bureau, he also wound up handling all of our firearms,” King noted. “So we had an issue with some backlog in the firearms and as anyone knows who is involved today, there’s a lot of people who want guns. We had a lot of applications. Mike got tasked with that. He cleaned it up, took care of the backlog, handled all of our firearms.

“So again, Mike, I wish you all the best congratulations I know you’re going to do the job well.”

King offers thanks for support

King also took time to laud all who were present for the promotions.

“There are officers from many different departments (here) and I want to thank you for coming out and thank you all for everything that you do every day,” King said. “The image that you give to law enforcement we enjoy great support in Kearny and it doesn’t come from one person, it comes from the department, community policing, etc. We all know it’s not just the unit, but it’s a concept and all of you, every day, go out, do your job, and you do it well. And you represent the uniform and the badge the way it’s supposed to be. I personally thank you for that. You make my job easier.”
