Nutley fire chief arrested, charged with luring, HCPO says
By Kevin A. Canessa Jr. kc@theobserver.com
The chief of Nutley’s Fire Department is behind bars after he was arrested for his involvement in an online sex sting involving a purported 14-yearold boy, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said today.
On Friday, Dec. 16, 2022, members
of the North Bergen Police Department, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Victims Unit and the Nutley Police Department arrested Henry Meola, 33, of Nutley, and charged him with one count of luring and attempted endangering the welfare of a child.
Meola was taken into custody at his home in Nutley, transported to
the North Bergen Police Department, and is being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in South Kearny, pending his first court appearance.
The investigation determined Meola arranged to meet an individual, who he believed to be a minor, for sexual activity in North Bergen. Suarez credited the North Bergen
Police Department, the HCPO Special Victims Unit and the Nutley Police Department with the investigation and arrest.
Today, Mayor Joseph P. Scarpelli and the Nutley Board of Commissioners issued a joint statement about Meola’s arrest.
“Today, the Nutley Board of Com-

After 13+ years on council, Cardoso bids adieu
By Ron Leir rleir423@gmail.com
After more than 13 years of public service, Kearny Councilman Albino Cardoso is preparing to resume life as a private citizen.
That will happen Dec. 31, when he completes his term of office as First Ward representative on the town governing body. Cardoso opted not to seek re-election and his replacement will be newcomer and fellow Democrat George Zapata.
“I feel very humble and thankful for the confidence my neighbors in the First Ward have given me for all the years they have elected me to office,” Cardoso said.
After having struggled with some health-related issues for the past couple of years, however, Cardoso said that at age 68, he’s had to slow down and decided that he “should take a little more time for myself. But I will continue to give my support to the mayor and the council in ways they feel I can help.”
In that context, he said, “I am willing and ready to do anything in my power but in a lower profile.”
With his newfound leisure time, Cardoso figures to spend more time visiting his native Portugal and, in particular, reconnecting with family and friends in his hometown, Fornos de Algodres,
while continuing to keep up ties to his adopted Kearny where he’s spent nearly half a century.
And he’s proud to look back at a legacy of achievements “we accomplished together on the council and with the support of the mayor, for the entire town and for the First Ward especially.”
“The major thing,” Cardoso said, is “how Kearny has grown as old factories and empty lots have given way to new apartments and stores. It makes a big difference for the future of Kearny. All the new development generates more revenue and has helped keep our (municipal) taxes stable the last six years.”
Granting tax abatements led to the construction of hundreds of new apartments along Passaic Avenue, Cardoso said. “PILOTs (Payments in Lieu of Taxation)
Pilots help us. Without it, we may not have had so much development. You always have to compromise. But things evolve. Whatever was good 10 years ago doesn’t mean the same thing applies now so probably no more 30-year abatements but probably something less.”
“I’d like to see the rest of Passaic Avenue (at the south end of town) redevelopment finished,” Cardoso said. “My hope is the developer and town reach an agreement (on
Real Estate Let’s Talk
MORTGAGE VS. DEED OF TRUST
Do you know whether you have a deed of trust or a mortgage? Some homeowners don’t. A mortgage is an agreement between you and the lender stating that the lender can take back the home if you don’t make the payments on your home loan. A deed of trust is similar in that it establishes security interest in your home. However, it involves three parties: the borrower, the lender, and a trustee. In most states, a title company acts as the trustee. If the borrower stops paying, the trustee takes control of the property and sells it on behalf of the lender. The foreclosure process is slightly different with deeds of trust utilizing non-judicial foreclo-
sures versus judicial foreclosures in mortgages.
Specializing in handling all the details involved in both buying and selling a home, we have been serving the real estate needs of our communities here in the greater New York area for over 55 years. Can we help you? Although we have no problem keeping the big picture in mind, we are very detail-oriented and will devote the time and attention necessary to answer our customers’ and clients’ questions and satisfy their needs. It’s not necessary to go through the selling/buying process alone, not when we’re close by. “Our success has been built one satisfied customer at a time.”

P.S. If you’re contemplating borrowing against your home, it would be a good idea to determine whether you have a deed of trust or a mortgage.

Like a scene ripped from a timeless holiday classic, there was Deputy Mayor Thomas Graziano on Saturday night proudly passing out bags of a holiday favorite - chestnuts roasted over an open fire.
There was a glow as warm as those embers to the entire night, as an estimated 3,000 people joined to sing carols, play games, make crafts, enjoy hot chocolate and usher in the holiday magic in Belleville.
The annual Winter Festival and Christmas Tree Lighting Spectacular was bigger, better and brighter than ever. The event is
free, with support through the municipality, Board of Education, the Michael A. Melham Civic Association and other generous community sponsors.
None other than Santa Claus, taking a break from taking wish lists from boys and girls of all ages, pushed the plunger to light the 60-foot-high Christmas tree at Belleville High School.
The lights twinkled as children played in the bouncy house area and families enjoyed horse-drawn carriage rides up and down Passaic Avenue. Others were checking out the petting zoo, where one woman cradled a duck where others were

Ground broken at Belleville’s newest redevelopment site
By Kevin A. Canessa Jr. kc@theobserver.com
More new luxury apartments are coming to Belleville and it was all made a reality Dec. 8.
Mayor Michael Melham and other Belleville officials dug ceremonial shovels into the ground that day, marking the start of construction of a sixstory luxury apartment building that will be constructed at the site of a shuttered foam factory.
Deputy Mayor Thomas Graziano and Councilman Vinny Cozzarelli also attended the ceremony for the start of the project, to be known as the Kelsey, which will feature 114 apartments and about 1,200 square-feet of ground-floor retail.
Construction at 740-748 Washington Ave. is to be completed sometime in 2024.
The Kelsey is part of Newarkbased Sound Development LLC’s Ethos brand, which already includes a 56-unit apartment complex on Franklin Avenue in Belleville.
The building’s name pays homage to the site’s history as an assembly plant for the Kelsey Motor Co. beginning in 1920. The car company went bankrupt in 1924, after only 601 Kelseys were built.
“The lobby of our building is going to incorporate an industrial look as a nod to the site’s storied history,” Sound Development’s Michael Pacillo said. “We are hoping to locate Kelsey Motor Company
memorabilia, such as photos, and display them prominently in the lobby.”
More recently, the site was home to Foam Rubber Fabricators.
The Kelsey will feature 70 one-bedroom units, 44 studio apartments and about 130 parking spaces. It will also feature a rooftop pool, a gym and an expansive outdoor terrace.
“We are very excited to see The Kelsey starting to take shape on Washington Avenue,” Melham said. “My administration has made quality redevelopment a priority. We will continue to seek out suitable development opportunities for Belleville that takes advantage of our terrific location, mass transit and suburban feel.”
In the photo at top left, an artist’s rendering of what the new building will look like once finished.

2 Kearny crossing guards struck in one-week period, leaving both injured
By Kevin A. Canessa Jr. kc@theobserver.com
Two Kearny crossing guards were struck by vehicles within a week of each other and both suffered injuries as a result of what police describe as “sun glare and driver inattention.”
The first incident happened two weeks ago at Beech Street and Midland Avenue, Sgt. David Rakowski, the Kearny Police Department’s Traffic Bureau commander, said.
There, the crossing guard suffered a fractured left tibia. The driver was issued two

motor-vehicle summonses.
The second happed Monday morning, Dec. 12, at Bergen Avenue and Ivy Street.
This guard suffered a possible fractured left ankle. One summons was issued to this driver.
A source tells The Observer the guard who suffered the fractured tibia underwent surgery soon after the incident.
That guard’s current status was not immediately clear.

Lyndhurst
On behalf of the township of Lyndhurst, Mayor Giangeruso would like to thank and acknowledge all of the businesses (listed below) that contributed with donations for the 100% funding to make Lyndhurst’s 16th Annual Christmas Holiday in the Park another successful and enjoyable event for everyone.
Thank you to department members of our Lyndhurst Parks and Recreation, DPW, Police and Fire & EMS for their cooperative assistance.
Much appreciation to our Lyndhurst Veterans Alliance, Sarah Madonna and Art of Dance for their participation and exceptional talent.
An extended thank you to all of those who so kindly volunteered their services help to make this year another successful and fun event for everyone!
A special note to readers from the North Pole
Dear Everyone: It is almost time for me to make my trip and deliver the toys to all you good little girls and boys. I see you all have been good this year. Please keep doing your very best in school and listening to mom and dad.
This year, I would like to talk about something for all my children, both young and old.
It seems our world has been changing during the past couple of years in many ways. There is global warming, war in Ukraine and humanity seems much more divided than I’ve ever seen it.
There seems to be too many hearts with darkness around them. So this is what I would like from you for Christmas.
Christmas is not just about opening presents. It is much more about opening our hearts. During this season of love and giving, let us all try to be kinder and forgiving of one another. Let us each strive to make this world a happier, better place to live in. There are two questions I live by: 1. If not me, who? And 2. If not now, when?
You can make a difference if you do your part to be kind and understanding to others. If we all join in at the same time, what a difference we can make, especially if we carry this on throughout the whole year. The world will be more wonderful for all of us because of you!
It seems when people get down on me and yell at me, I let them get all that hostility out (it lets them feel better, less anxious.)
Then I say something they never expect to hear. I thank them for letting me know how they feel, tell them I will try to do better.
And then I tell them I still love them.
It takes them by surprise and sometimes they see where they should not have been that aggressive. But more importantly, they see that I still care about them, which is a lesson they can learn to use themselves.
After a while, you may find you don’t get angry, but just disappointed which is much better for your health.
Well, that is what I hope you will do for me. Stay good and go to bed early on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
Love, Santa

Several organizations, community groups and municipal agencies also participated in the Winter Festival, sharing information with residents and seeking volunteers.
The school district sold Christmas tree ornaments, garden flags and potholders created by the students in the Life Skills Program.
The Belleville Police Department passed out coffee, cookies and hot dogs, while the Belleville Fire Department gave away candy canes and small holiday-themed gifts.
“You can feel the warmth of the community here tonight,” said Mayor Michael Melham, who welcomed festivalgoers to warm up around two fire pits that his association assembled and maintained through the night.
“This night is about making spirits bright. Thanks to our collaboration with the Belleville School District, this event fills hearts with the holiday spirit,” the mayor said.
Councilmembers Naomy DePeña and Vinny Cozzarelli also participated in the Winter Festival, greeting residents and spreading holiday cheer. Meanwhile, Graziano was focused on handing out the roasted chestnuts, a popular staple of the
event.
The deputy mayor soaked 75 pounds of chestnuts for three hours before the event, then sliced each one open before putting them on the grill to roast until they were soft and emitted a sweet, smoky scent. Chestnuts are a traditional staple at Graziano holiday dinners, usually washed down with an espresso between dinner and dessert.
Handing them out to festival-goers was a family affair. The deputy mayor’s sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Michael Catena, helped out. So did a longtime family friend, Jeanne DiPasquale Lombardi.
“This is what it’s all about,” said Graziano, handing out brown paper bags filled with steaming hot chestnuts.

Belleville wrestling excels at Kearny Tournament, crowns four individual champs
By Jason Bernstein jason@theobserver.com
Before the season, Joe Pizzi told his Belleville wrestling team that it had the talent to be the best group he’s had in his eight years as the program’s head coach. Saturday’s season opener was a major first step towards achieving that.
Competing in the annual Kearny Holiday Tournament, Belleville had its best showing ever, finishing second to only Cranford in the team portion of the event. Individually, four Bucs - Jakob Ferrer at 106 pounds, Leon Tiankee at 120, Rocco Negron at 132 and Fernando Collado at 165 - all took home gold in their respective weight classes, also a record for the program.
“In the Kearny Tournament, it’s definitely the best one we’ve ever had. I think we came in third a couple of times in previous years, I don’t think we’ve ever come in second place,” Pizzi said. “The four champions, that was great. That’s the most we’ve ever had. I’ve told my kids often early on this season that I think we have the potential to be one of my most talented
teams, depending on their output in the practice room and their discipline during the season.”
Pizzi has seen a definite uptick and morale now that the team is able to practice at the brand new Belleville Indoor Training Facility that is located a couple of minutes away from the high school. Previously, they had to use the high school cafeteria as a makeshift practice venue.
Unlike other seasons, Pizzi sees a roster deep and balanced enough that they should be able to field a full lineup for dual matches.
Success in those duals will be largely dependent on getting bonus points from those lower weights that are the strength of the team.
“They’re definitely our more experienced, higher caliber wrestlers. I feel like that just goes unspoken,” said Pizzi. “Everybody has their highs and lows through their lineup, but I feel like this is one of our more promising lineups all the way through. We’ve always had great kids, but we never had solid kids all the way through.”
Ferrer, a junior and one of three captains, led the team in
wins last year, going 33-5 in a season that took him within one victory of qualifying for the state tournament in Atlantic City at 106 pounds. In a weight class usually dominated by underclassmen, the experience Ferrer has should work in his favor.
“It’s definitely an advantage,” Pizzi said. “He’s strong, he’s aggressive and he’s a very technical wrestler. He’s one of our higher-caliber wrestlers.”
Freshman Rocco Russomanno is set to compete at 113 pounds.
At 120 pounds is Tiankee, who went 22-9 last season and has the ability to make a run in the individual tournaments at the end of the season.
“He doesn’t really say much, he’s not a vocal leader, but he definitely shows it on the mat with how hard he works,” said Pizzi.
Sophomore Aiden Carrasquillo is a first year wrestler competing at 126.
At 132 pounds is Negron, the lone Buc to qualify for the state tournament in Atlantic City last March. The junior, who went 25-6 last season, finished fifth at the Kearny
Kearny boys hoops team starts the season on the right foot
By Jason Bernstein jason@theobserver.com
With no returning starters and very few players who have even played meaningful minutes, Kearny boys basketball coach Bill Mullins could easily bemoan the lack of certainty within his roster.
Instead the message has been that with such uncertainty comes opportunity for his players to seize a prominent spot.
“This is an opportunity, it’s their time,” said Mullins. “This is their time to step up.”
That initial opportunity came on Thursday for the Kardinals and it was one several made the most of, with a 55-28 victory over BelovED Charter of Jersey City. Six different players recorded six or more points in the win and, in total, eight players scored as Kearny aims to improve upon last season’s 7-14 record.
“It’s always nice to win on opening day, especially with a young group. It builds up their confidence,” Mullins said. “For a young and inexperienced group we did a really good job in the scrimmages and we’re playing hard. We’ve been practicing hard and we’re trying to get better everyday.”
Leading the way for Kearny on opening night was junior Matheus Mullins, who scored 14 points and made four 3-pointers.
With older brother William, the top scorer and rebounder from last year out of the season due to illness, the younger Matheus is the team’s tallest player at 6-foot6 and will have to shoulder a lot of the load that is left by William’s absence.
“They each have their own style,” Bill Mullins said about
his two sons. “Matheus had a nice opening day, he’s got a pretty good outside shot. They always played together, but now Matheus is going to have to step up to the plate. And he’s capable of it.”
Despite his stature, Matheus Mullins has played primarily on the perimeter. The same could be said for the rest of the roster as Bill Mullins views his roster as one entirely composed of guards.
“We’re trying to develop the overall talent on the team,” Bill Mullins said. “I want them all to become basketball players that can play any position on the floor.
“We have to all play and all have to run. We have to be able to dribble the ball, shoot the ball. They’re players, more so than positions. We do not have much size, but we hope that our quickness and playing fast will help us.”
Helping with that fast pace is starting point guard Shamar Bailey, a 5-foot-11 senior who had eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in the opener. Sophomore Kevin McKenna, who sank two 3-pointers on Thursday, can also play the point.
Senior Melvin Castro is a guard who is strong to the basket and used that to put up nine points with six rebounds in the win over BelovED Charter. Another sophomore, Luis Rodriguez will see extensive time in the back court, along with senior Brian Argudo and junior Jonah Menendez
Senior Jose Escalante (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) is the strongest player on the team and will usually draw the assignment of guarding the opposing team’s best big

“He’s a very technical wrestler. He goes to a lot of different clubs, learns from a lot of different coaches,” Pizzi said. “He’s very coachable, but he’s an extremely tough kid. He really wants it and you can tell from the way he’s approached the season that he’s all in.”
Matias Lopez, a fouryear starter who began his career as an upper middle weight, took home second place at 138 pounds on Saturday.
At 144 is junior Franco Russomanno, a returning starter and the older brother of Rocco. Two sophomores handle the next weight classes as Santiago Nunez is at 150 pounds and Demetri
Moya’s at 157.
Collado, a senior, returns at 165 after going 18-11 at the spot last year and qualifying for regions.
“(Fernando) is a great kid, hard worker, he truly loves the sport,” said Pizzi. “He’s definitely another kid that’s all in and has a passion for the sport.”
Senior Kanai Martin, who moved from Bayonne, but didn’t wrestle there, has been a surprise at 175 pounds. Martin, who went 3-1 to take fifth place on Saturday, is very strong and has impressed despite his lack of varsity experience.
Junior Mike Sanchez, a first year wrestler, also turned heads at Kearny, going 3-1 to take fifth at 190 pounds.
Another first year wrestler is senior Sterling Fernandez at 215 pounds.
Fernandez, who went 3-1 and finished in fifth has a jujitsu background and could also potentially slide down to 190 if needed.
Senior Eduardo Mata is the starter at 285 pounds.
Sophomore Daniel San Martin and Johan Rivas, a first year senior, are among those who could also see action in varsity duals depending on matchups.
Belleville looks to continue its momentum on Wednesday when it hosts neighboring rival Nutley in a dual match. On Jan. 7 the Bucs will host the annual Belleville Tournament, a 12-team event that also includes Nutley, North Bergen, Mountain Lakes, Rutherford, Becton/ Wood-Ridge and Secaucus among others.
“I think this team understands their potential. They know what it takes,” said Pizzi. “They understand that we’re going to push the limits and that we’re really going to challenge them every single day. They understand what’s at hand and they know it’s no easy task. But they’re all in and no one’s backing down.”

man. Junior Jayden Figuereo (6-foot-0) also will see a lot of time at forward, but can also step out and make shots from the outside.
Daniel Valentin, Benjamin Cepin and Christopher Ruiz are also vying for playing time and working
their way into the mix as well.
Kearny hopes to continue its winning ways during a difficult three-game week that started at Belleville on Monday, Dec. 19, before home contests with McNair on Wednesday and Passaic on Thursday.
The Kardinals host their annual Kearny Christmas Tournament on Dec. 28-29 with Nutley, Abun-
dant Life and Marion P. Thomas Charter also competing in the event.
“We believe in these kids,” Bill Mullins said. “We think we can put a competitive team out there. We’re hopeful that we’re going to be a competitive team and get some wins. The kids have been very responsive and I hope they keep that way.”

COPD: KNOW THE SYMPTOMS
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, a chronic lung disease also known as COPD, is caused by damage to the lung’s small airways that makes it difficult for air to flow properly. COPD develops gradually and is usually diagnosed in patients over 35. Most COPD cases are caused by long-term tobacco use. However, other issues such as environmental exposure to chemicals and dust, secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke, genetic predisposition, and a history of lung infections during childhood are also contributing factors to COPD. Not all tobacco users develop COPD and non-smokers may develop COPD over time. Shortness of breath doing simple daily tasks may indicate the need for spirometry, a
test that measures the air capacity of the lungs.
When it comes to managing COPD, not every person is the same. Different people may do better with different options, including maintenance treatment. That is why it’s important to work with your doctor to find a treatment that is right for you. To schedule an appointment, please call PREMIER CARE ASSOCIATES OF WEST HUDSON at 201-998-7474, or visit us 7 days a week at 512 Kearny Ave., Suite B, where walk-in patients are always welcome 7 days a week.
P.S. Around 1814, British physician Charles Badham was the first to use the term “catarrh” to describe the chronic cough and excessive mucus that COPD produces.

Lyndhurst girls basketball hits the ground running with new coach, young roster
By Jason Bernstein jason@theobserver.com
When Chris Boyce was hired to take over as the new girls basketball coach at Lyndhurst in late August, he knew they were going to have to hit the ground running this preseason after being unable to build that bond and chemistry during the summer. As part of that, the former Queen of Peace coach put forth an ambitious scrimmage schedule that included matchups against Pascack Valley and its legendary coach Jeff Jasper, as well as fellow regular state-ranked teams in Roselle Catholic and St. Thomas Aquinas.
“We set the tone with our scrimmages,” Boyce said. “I just wanted the girls to see something outside of our area of Bergen County so they see different basketball, different styles. I think it’s important for them to see other areas of the state and see how basketball is
played in other areas.”
That experience certainly paid off in the first couple days of the regular season as the Golden Bears defeated Garfield and Harrison in overwhelming fashion, winning
by 37 points and 44 points respectively.
While final margins are certainly eye-opening, Boyce knows that harder challenges await within the NJIC National Division and beyond,
starting with a Dec. 20 contest at Secaucus, who has won six consecutive NJIC division titles.
“The goal is to get this young team prepared for bigger games so we can build on
that as we go forward with this team,” said Boyce. “Because most of this team is freshmen and sophomores.”
Lyndhurst’s 12-girl varsity roster features six sophomores and three freshmen.
Of the group, the early breakout star has been freshman Brooke Harper, a 6-foot-0 forward, who moved into the starting lineup due to an injury to Jolie Paz-Garcia. Harper responded with 20 points, 16 rebounds and an incredible 11 blocks to begin what should be a stellar high school career.
“I think Brooke has a bright future. I personally think she’s going to be a college basketball player once she starts understanding the game more,” Boyce said. “Brooke is going to be a big part of our program this year and in the future.”
Joining Harper up front is sophomore Asya Akar, a 5-foot-10 “point forward” who
UNDERSTANDING CHILDHOOD GLAUCOMA
Also called congenital, pediatric, or infantile glaucoma, childhood glaucoma is a rare condition in which the eye’s drainage system does not develop properly before birth, causing pressure that damages the optic nerve. Symptoms usually come on gradually, but in some cases no symptoms are present. The earliest and most common symptom of childhood glaucoma is a cloudy cornea. Enlarged eyes, sensitivity to light, watery eyes, and vision loss are other usual symptoms. Surgical correction is successful in some patients. Medicated eyedrops and oral medications are also used to treat childhood glaucoma. While some vision loss should be expected, remaining vision can be op-
timized to help children with this disease live full lives.
Children that develop glaucoma later in childhood may be asymptomatic until the disease progresses into permanent optic nerve damage and vision loss. Eye exams are recommended for children within their first year of life. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, please call 201-896-0096. We are located at 20 Park Avenue, Lyndhurst. Call 201-896-0007 if you need to reach our optical shop. We accept most insurance.
P.S. Acute pediatric glaucoma is a type of childhood glaucoma that comes on rapidly and can include symptoms such as irritability, loss of appetite, and vomiting.

her 8.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game averages from a season ago
“She kinda does everything for us,” said Boyce. “She rebounds, she scores, she passes the ball, brings up the ball. She does a little bit of everything.”
When Paz-Garcia, a sophomore who led the team in blocks last season with 18, the Golden Bears will have one of if not the tallest front court in the entire NJIC.
Another starter capable of playing at forward is Kyla Marino. The 5-foot-9 sophomore has quickly emerged as a specialist capable of defending all five
spots on the floor. Marino will match up against the opposing team’s top player regardless of position.
“She just plays great defense and we need her to guard. She’s going to be covering the best player every night,” said Boyce. “That’s her role and I can care less if she scores two points or not. She hustles and plays defense and that’s why she’s in the starting lineup every night.”
Lyndhurst welcomes back both starting guards from last season. Lexi Augustyniak, the lone senior starter, returns as a combo guard after averaging 8.5 points per game last season. At the point is Sam Meyer who has started off her sophomore season with 14 points to go with a teambest nine assists and seven steals.
Junior Kiera Docherty should be one of the area’s best reserves and will once again be looked upon to bring an offensive spark after making 29 3-pointers last season. Freshman Gianna Lembo is also being counted upon for minutes off the bench.
Senior Jada Amador and sophomore Alex Marmorato are also expected to see minutes off the bench. In addition, freshmen, Juliana Gonzalez and sophomore Alejandra Ramriez are the young players who could vie for time as they continue to develop.
“I don’t think we’re close to where we could be right now,” Boyce said. “I think as we progress, we’re going to get better and I expect big things from us as we get better.”

William J. Gallacher
William J. Gallacher, 77, of Kearny, died Dec. 15, 2022.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation for William at the Armitage & Wiggins Funeral Home, 596 Belgrove Drive, Kearny, on Wednesday, Dec. 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. A
funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Kearny on Thursday, Dec. 22 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
Born in Scotland, William came to the United States with his family when he was 5. The family settled in Newark, and William later moved to Kearny, where he was a longtime resident. He was a truck driver for various companies throughout the years, until his retirement at 62. William was an avid fan of the New York Mets and was a dedicated Little League coach for the FMBA. His greatest job was being a devoted and proud grandfather.
William was the beloved husband of Patricia Gallacher; loving father of William Gallacher and his wife Tracey, Kevin Gallacher and his wife Samantha and Carolyn Slomkowski and her husband Robert; and cherished grandfather of 11. Philip Eberwein
Philip Eberwein of North Arlington died Dec. 16, 2022.
He was 88.
Philip was born in 1934 and raised in the Bronx. One of his favorite childhood memories was sneaking into Yankee Stadium and leaning over the Yankee dugout with pencils and scraps of paper to get autographs from the likes of Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Whitey Ford.
Philip served eight years with
the New York 107th Infantry Regiment and was honorably discharged in 1960. He remained extremely patriotic and had the utmost respect for those in the military service. Philip eventually took a job with the New York Daily News as a printer pressman, where he stayed until retirement. He worked at night and often came home in the early mornings with hats made from newspaper and treats from the local bakery.
In his 20s and into his early 30s, Philip was the life of the party until he went on a date that would change his life. At the conclusion of this one date, the young lady told him that she wasn’t interested in him, but did he want to go on a date with her friend, Maria? He said “yes,” and after a short courtship, he and Maria were married and spent over 55 years together, before she died in 2020.
Philip loved to make people laugh and seemingly followed in the footsteps of Yogi Berra, with wise sayings such as “One day I will wake up dead.” Philip was also abundantly generous and helping people was at his core. If you told him you liked something, you’d have at least two cases on your doorstep the next day.
Philip leaves behind to celebrate life, his daughters Anna Eberwein and Cecilia Lindenfel-

ALBINO
a PILOT and other issues). Litigation only makes us spend much money and nobody wins.”
Other milestones Cardoso mentioned include the repaving of many First Ward streets, refurbishing playgrounds and creation of a new Miglin Park play area at Johnston and Sheridan avenues, construction of a fieldhouse at Veterans’ Field and reconfiguring the parking lot behind the American Legion and VFW posts off Belgrove Drive to accommodate overnight resident parking.
“We also used UEZ (Urban Enterprise Zone) funds to negotiate a deal to acquire land for overnight resident parking on Kearny Avenue by Duke Street,” he noted.
And First Ward residents recall how Cardoso fought six years to overcome cumbersome state regulations to get a traffic light installed at Kearny and Wilson avenues, a difficult intersection for motorists to navigate.
But topping his list is the installation of 4-way-stop signs at various heavily-trafficked intersections along Highland Avenue at Bergen, Wilson, Woodland and Afton; plus Maple and Afton; Chestnut and Hoyt; and Devon and Woodlawn. “These all help slow down traffic and make our streets safer,” he
said.
He’s also proud of the installation of a monument in Riverbank Park calling attention to the civic contributions made by members of Kearny’s native Portuguese population.
Among Cardoso’s many fans is Second Ward Councilman Peter Santana, who recalled how after he was named to replace the late Councilman Jonathan Giordano in 2017, it was Cardoso who “reached out to me and offered to be there for me anytime I needed help. He really led me through the ropes . He was always thinking of the residents and sometimes he’d go after department heads but only with the thought that residents should be treated better. People are especially proud of his fight for 4-way stops and, in particular, how he was after our engineer to push the county to get a sign on Bergen Avenue which is under the county’s jurisdiction.”
Cardoso, who retired recently as maintenance supervisor at R.P. Baking (the former Pechter’s Bakery) in Harrison, sat for several years as a member of Kearny’s Board of Adjustment. He was also a commissioner on the Kearny Urban Enterprise Zone Board, was the council’s liaison for the Municipal Court, chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee and served on virtually all council committees.
He continues as a parishioner of at St. Cecelia Church, Kearny.

missioners learned of the formal arrest and charging of Henry Meola,” the statement reads. “Mr. Meola had previously been suspended from his duties as Fire Chief on Dec. 7, 2022. The township is disappointed and extremely concerned about the nature of the charges. The township is working with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in this investigation of Mr. Meola. Be assured that the board will continue to cooperate with this investigation and will take any further action that is necessary.”
The Observer reported Meola’s suspension Thursday, Dec. 15.
Meanwhile, the aforementioned incident occurred after a YouTubebased sting, led by the group OBL Nation — founded by a Jersey man who is known to his viewers by his first name only, Ramy — used a decoy who posed as a 14-year-old boy. In the video, which was originally streamed live and is now re-posted after editing, Meola reportedly admits his intention was to have some sort of tryst with the boy. Though there wasn’t an actual boy, the intent was still present, which ultimately led to Meola’s arrest. You may view the full sting video at www.theobserver.com.
