Montoya pulled the car over at Rutherford Avenue and Orient Way and he quickly learned the vehicle, which had Mississippi tags, was not properly registered. But this was just the beginning. When Montoya approached the car, he learned it was being operated by Kendrick Ford, 23, of Bude, Mississippi. Montoya described Ford as being nervous and said he detected the odor of raw marijuana emanating from the passenger compartment. Before Montoya obtained consent to search the vehicle, Auteri says, Ford voluntarily admitted to having a handgun in the car. During a search of the vehicle, a 9 mm handgun was recovered from beneath the driver’s seat. A small bag of raw marijuana was also found in the back seat. The gun was a loaded, Auteri says, and it contained

Harrison awards $1.1M in small-business grants The last eight-plus months have brought challenges to small businesses that no one could have dreamed of when the calendar turned from 2019 to 2020. Like many new years, there was optimism in the air. “Hey, 2020’s gonna be a great year,” so many of us said. And then there was COVID-19, a form of the Coronavirus that actually had its roots in the previous year, but that reared its ugly head this year. All of this said, thanks to the CARES Act, Hudson County Executive Thomas A. DeGise, Mayor James A. Fife and members of the Town Council, a total of 66 small Harrison businesses were awarded $1.1 million in CARES Act grants recently. Fife, DeGise and Councilmembers Lawrence Bennett, Ellen Mendoza and Jesus Huaranga delivered the awards to Harrison merchants a little more than a week ago. “We would like to thank our federal delegation, Sens. Robert Menendez and Cory Booker and Rep. Albio Sires for bringing the CARES Act Funding to Hudson County,” Fife said. “Small business are the backbone of any community and a special thanks is needed for Harrison CFO Gabi Simoes and NW Financial for their diligent work.” To qualify for the grants, small businesses had to meet guidelines, including operating as a for-profit entity at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, having 25 or fewer

employees and having a physical presence in Harrison. The maximum grant award amount was $20,000. “The checks came at a good time for the happy merchants of Harrison,” Fife said. One business owner, a restaurateur, who asked not to be identified, said he was beyond grateful for the large grant he received. “I wasn’t expecting the grant, even though I had applied for it a while ago,” the businessman said. “I had decided that I was going to close at the end of November. The Kearny native who now lives in Nutley is taking part in a Food Network contest -- called “The Greatest Baker” -- and if she wins, she stands to take home a $10,000 grand prize. And for the longtime, selftaught cake maker, winning the contest could make or break a business she started … just as the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. “I was completing all the paperwork for state certification and all of that and planned to open the business March 25,” she says. KNOW YOUR STORAGE OPTIONS

So, you are in preparation for selling your home and want to start packing and storing. You can do this leisurely, and the property will benefit from being decluttered. There are good storage options, the first being a rental storage unit. These provide a secure space, are affordable, come in different sizes, and can be accessed 24/7. Some are even climate-controlled. A second option is a storage container delivered to your driveway. This is handy because you can pack a box and place it in the container at any time of day or night, without leaving home. Eventually, the full container will be picked up

and moved to your new home, so you can unpack at leisure. Make it easy on yourself when dealing with the myriad decisions that need to be made during any real estate transaction—turn to the professionals who have years of experience in diligently catering to the needs of buyers and sellers alike. Whether it’s packing and storage options you are considering, or a moving company you need to choose, or even a mortgage provider you need to find, we are in touch with many professionals in the real estate industry. “Our success has been built one satisfied customer at a time.”

Thoughts & Views EDITORIAL

Please, when possible, consider donating to food pantries

W

ith Thanksgiving just over a week away, we at The Observer take this time to encourage all of our readers to consider donations to local food pantries. This year has been one for the history books and in many cases, not for the better. And the harsh reality is that there are more families this year who are in dire situations of food insufficiency. One only needs to look at the line that wraps around Laurel Avenue in Kearny from in front of the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington each Friday to know more and more families are relying on the generosity of others just to get by. Whether it’s the Kearny Food Pantry Network, other church-based pantries, the outreach program led by Phil Stafford, or anywhere else, we have learned, in the most difficult of ways, that most of the food programs locally are in need of help — just a week away from the holiday. These social justice agencies work so hard to put food on the tables of those who might otherwise go without. And so if you’re in the position to donate, please do so so that all sustenance programs may do what they do best — helping others. It is at times like these that we realize just how generous our local communities are. So let’ s all do our part to make this Thanksgiving one we can all remember for a long time to come, despite all else going on in the world.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Rose: Should we feel badly Murphy pays more than $200K in property taxes? To the Editor: I found a recent newspaper article ‘’Our Governor and His Wife Pay a Ton in Property Taxes’’ totally misleading and feel a comparison is in order. First, the governor’s 6.3-acre, $9.9 million mansion sits on prime real estate on the Navesink River. My home sits on a 32 by 75 foot lot, east of Schuyler Avenue, in North Arlington. The governor pays approximately $209,000 in taxes on his property. I pay over $8,000 on my property. The

governor’s property consists of approximately 270,000 square feet. Mine, 2,400 square feet. If the governor was required to pay $8,000 in taxes for every 2,400 square feet of his property, his tax bill would be approximately $900,000. Though the governor ran on reducing property taxes, that hasn’t happened. It seems at a closer look, we are the ones paying a ton of property taxes. Armand Rose North Arlington

KPD: City of Orange didn’t even want this scofflaw

By Capt. Tim Wagner Kearny Police Department On Nov. 10 at 12:36 p.m., KPD received a call that a woman was refusing to pay her bar tab at Jimmy’s Bar & Grill on Midland Avenue. Officer Pedro Pina responded with backup. He was told by the bartender and several patrons that Jennifer F. Williamson, 35, of Newark, who was seated at the bar, was causing a disturbance and refusing to pay her $31 tab. Williamson allegedly began repeating, “I paid my bill,” but then changed her tune and screamed, “I ain’t paying for sh--.” Officers tried to calm her to no avail. Williamson reportedly began walking around the bar, shouting obscenities and picking up items that belonged to other customers: a jacket, a backpack and a paper bag, as examples. By this time, the officers had seen enough and tried to arrest Williamson for her disorderly conduct. This did not go well. Williamson allegedly flailed her arms wildly and once handcuffed, repeatedly threw her

weight to the ground. When officers put her into a police car, Williamson reportedly began bicycle kicking at the officers. Once the car door was closed, she screamed and repeatedly tried to kick out a window. Placed directly into a holding cell at the police station, Williamson was said to have thrown herself to the floor before kicking and banging her fists on the cell door. The officers then had to extract Williamson from the cell for her own protection, since she would not stop banging herself on the metal door. While cuffing her again to extract her, Williamson flailed her arms and scratched one of the officers, causing a laceration to his finger. Once she calmed down, Williamson was booked on a summons with disorderly conduct, obstructing the administration of law, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on police. She was also found to have had nine outstanding arrest warrants issued by the City of Orange carrying a total bail of $2,900. Not surprisingly, Orange didn’t want her and released Williamson on her own recognizance.

POLICE BEAT On Nov. 3 at 9:15 p.m., Shop-Rite reported that a shoplifter was trying to flee the store. Officers Nicole Williams and Derek Hemphill were dispatched and found Corey D. White, 36, of Harrison, in a verbal dispute in the parking lot with the store manager. The manager alleged White had not paid for all of the groceries he carried out of the store and was now refusing to show his receipt. When police arrived, White acquiesced and showed his receipt. The tally showed he had $75.98 worth of groceries for which he allegedly had not paid. White was then arrested and charged with shoplifting. He was later released with a summons. On Nov. 5 at 10:29 a.m., a citizen reported a man was unresponsive inside a black Jeep on the 600 block of Forest Street. Officer John Donovan investigated and found the parked Jeep with two legs hanging out of its driver’s door. Inside, Officer Donovan

saw William Hicks, 47, of Kearny, lying asleep across the center console. Hicks was roused and apparently had no idea who owned the vehicle inside which he had taken his slumber. Hicks was arrested. A search incident to his arrest yielded a used hypodermic syringe and two wax folds of heroin stamped “12:30.” After refusing treatment by EMS, Hicks was charged with burglary and possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia and a hypodermic syringe. He was then given a berth at the Hudson County Jail in South Kearny. On Nov. 7 at 10:53 a.m., 911 got a call reporting a dispute at a bodega at 345 Kearny Ave. Officer Anthony Nunez and several other officers responded. The store proprietor, a 37-year-old woman, reported Theodore C. Hadam, 52, of Kearny, had entered the store asking to purchase a pack of cigarettes. When told the price of the cigarettes, Hadam reportedly became “enraged” and repeatedly said, “What are you talking See KPD, Page 16

He said he had four. He scores and you tend to forget that he is the one who scored them. He’s a good finisher. He’s in the box and is able to get the ball from the corners.” If the Kardinals (10-2) played a full slate of games this season instead of the truncated schedule caused by the COVID, Rojas might

have challenged for the single season goal scoring record set by Michael Millar, the brother of current assistant coach Scott Millar and son of longtime head coach John Millar. Michael Miller, a high school All-American during his days at Kearny, scored 34 goals in 2004. Rojas will have another year in 2021 to challenge the record. “He’s a good kid with a good sense of humor,” Galka said. “He enjoys playing. He gets along with the other guys very well. I had to learn a whole new language. I had to meet new people. My family helped me a lot.” And now, as the Kardinals move on in the state tournament to face Memorial this week (the game was scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Kearny High School), Rojas wants one more thing more than setting a goal scoring record. “I want us to win the states,” Rojas said. As long as Rojas keeps finding the back of the net, anything is possible.

told me I was in kidney failure, I just tried to stay strong,” Velazquez said. “I didn’t want to break down, especially not in front of my Mom.” Velazquez remained hospitalized for a few weeks until his blood pressure was stabilized. He was fitted with a stent in order to receive the dialysis treatment that is required three times a week. “The kidney doctors at Hackensack have no clue how it all started,” Velazquez said. “Both of my kidneys are really small and are operating at 15 percent capacity. The kidney doctors at Hackensack believe that this had been happening for a long time and it just never showed up in a physical.” Luis Velazquez, Jared’s father, was stunned when Jared received the diagnosis. “This threw a monkey wrench into everything,” Luis Velazquez said. “We were all so looking forward to Jared’s college days. He was in the middle of taking college visits and now this.” One of Jared’s doctors believes that the FSGS could be caused by Jared being born prematurely. Lizzette Velazquez was just a little more than seven months pregnant when Jared was born. “Maybe his kidneys were not fully developed,” Luis Continued on the next page

Wednesday, November 18, 2020 Velazquez said. Luis Velazquez’s older brother, Ricardo, had something similar happen to him, namely kidney failure that required transplant surgery. But Ricardo was 49 years old when he had the surgery, receiving a kidney from his mother. The Velazquez family – Luis, Lizzette and their daughter, Lauren, a softball and soccer player at NA – remains close knit through Jared’s trials and tribulations. “When you see me, I don’t look sick,” Jared Velazquez said. “I think I feel normal.” Still, Velazquez cannot play until a transplant donor is found. Velazquez is working out, wearing the NA colors with pride. “I was looking forward to the day where I played soccer in college.” Jared Velazquez said. That day still may come. If Jared can receive a donation and undergoes the transplant surgery, then there’s a chance he could play at the next level. But there are no guarantees. For now, Velazquez

attends practices with his teammates and keeps a stiff upper lip. “It’s been a blessing that he still has the same state of mind,” Luis Velazquez said. “In his mind, it’s just another obstacle. As parents, of course, we worry about the worst. But then we see his attitude and his ability to just take it all in. He makes us all more comfortable and enables us to deal with it.” Velazquez is on the donor list, but he’s still not currently a candidate for the transplant until his hypertension is under control. Velazquez is also a challenge for a transplant because of his blood type, the rare O-positive. “It’s sad, but I still see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Velazquez said. “Colleges are still interested in me. I could play in college after the transplant. I still think I’m the same player. But everything is up in the air until I can find a living donor.” If Velazquez can find a donor, then he can return to playing club soccer and playing baseball for the Vi-

The Booster Club, under the guidance of Joe Witt, the father of Joey Witt, Velazquez’s friend and teammate, started a T-shirt drive in honor of Velazquez. “When the school learned, everyone was just devastated,” Dembowski said. “We were truly heartbroken. He’s just one of those kids that everyone knows and loves. He’s extremely positive. But he keeps telling us that he’ll be alright.” It was slated to be a

The Vikings currently own a dismal 2-6-1 record, not what Dembowski planned. “We’ve waited for this for a long time,” Dembowski said. “This was our year. If we were going to do something this year, this was it.” The Vikings will face Midland Park in the opening round of the state tournament this week. DeLuca Vision Consultants Presented by Joseph A. DeLuca, M.D., F.A.C.S. Getting older has both its privileges and its problems. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), also called dry macular degeneration, generally only affects adults over age 60. While there may be no symptoms at first, it will start to cause gradual loss of vision as it progresses. In the beginning there may be difficulty reading and poor night vision, followed by blurred vision. Colors will begin to look faded, and central vision (the ability to see directly in front of you) will diminish. It is possible for dry AMD to precede more serious retinal diseases known as “wet AMD,” in which blood leaks around the macula; however, one does not necessarily cause the other.

More big guests coming to Applause Radio By JoAnn Barton Special to The Observer I’ll start with apologies to those who tuned in to Applause Radio Show (ARS) Nov. 10 expecting to hear from Anson Williams. There was a scheduling issue and he was not on the show. He is going to be joining me on Tuesday, Nov. 24 along with actor Hank Garrett. However, I did have some other amazing guests on the show. Actor Billy Gray who played Bud on one of my favorite television shows, “Father Knows Best,” stopped by and we had a great time strolling down memory lane. Of course, I had to ask if Robert Young was a nice in real life as he was on the show and he responded with a resounding “yes.” The love he felt for Young and the entire cast poured out. Gray is still friends with the surviving members of the cast, Kitten and Betty (Lauren Ann Chapin and Elinor Donohue respectively). Gray says he is most proud of his role in the original version of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” and his career as a Class A Speedway motorcycle racer.

Around five years ago, he was still racing. Not only is he an actor but he’s also an inventor. He has invented many products that revolve around music and he is not even a musician. But he and his business partner (who is a musician) saw a need and created new mousetraps. They have several products out available at bigrockmfg. com. Special guitar picks so you are not losing them when you play, the Boomlock, boom mic stand locks are among the items. It prevents the stand from falling. After a while, the tightener just does not hold anymore. This product is perfect for boom mic stands. They also have a new switch guard available amongst other products. He just received the IBEX award for the Hose Clip for boaters. To find out more about Gray and his products, visit www.billygray.com. I am so happy that Gray is doing well, as this industry is not kind to many. He was incredibly kind and a pleasure to speak with and to get to know. Veterans Day was a real treat. It was my way of saying thank you to our service members. Music producer/publisher Bobby

Pileggi and musician Hana Rosa joined us from Hawaii to introduce their new song, “I am an American, Yeah.” It is a great song and especially needed now in these tumultuous times we are going through. I was proud to debut the song for them. If you like reggae and jazz mixed with a little Hawaiian, you will really enjoy it. Check it out. Pileggi left Long Island New York roughly 20 years ago and moved to Hawaii. He stuck out like a sore thumb on his little Island of a population of 7,000 but said that everyone knows everyone and are kind to each other. He met Rosa while promoting other projects that she and his band worked on. Something I did not know is that Hawaii has a thing about the rest of the U.S., as the south has with the north. Being taken over and becoming part of the U.S. but the feeling has subsided over the years. Hence, “I Am an American, Yeah.” The acceptance of becoming part of the U.S. and letting everyone know about it. It really is a great song about unity and bringing us together. Music is probably one of the only things that can do that. You can hear/

view it on YouTube. ARS also welcomed back lyricist/songwriter Rick Ryan and we played the song “Shadowland,” which he wrote for Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (CSNY). It’s another great song about America and touching on the Vietnam War. Ryan was inspired to write the song after seeing the move “Platoon” and from his own brother’s experiences serving as a Navy Seal in Vietnam. Thank you to all veterans and to all of those who currently serve. I finally had the opportunity to watch the private viewing of the film “Tar,” by actor/director Aaron Wolf who was on ARS Nov. 1. The movie is based on a true story about the La Brea Tar Pit that sits in the middle of Los Angeles. Wolf put a horror spin on it. It is an indie film now, but I could see it going to Netflix and even theaters. For 40,000 years, a longforgotten wetland teemed with ancient creatures, but now all that is left is a pit of hot, sticky tar surrounded by a vast urban landscape. For Barry Greenwood and his son Zach, there is not much left of their family business either. With the city’s subway expanding under their feet

and their office building slated for demolition, Barry, Zach and their employees are forced to shut down their shop and move out. Three family generations and three lifetimes of hard work to be turned into rubble. But when something primal is awoken by the underground construction, a night of somber packing becomes a desperate fight for survival. If you like horror with a touch of comedy and independent/B Movies, you will really enjoy “Tar.” I have seen many indie and B horror movies and have been in a few myself and they were horrible. This film is not. The production and acting are great. There is nothing cheesy about this film at all. I jumped a few times. The characters were great too. Aaron plays the lead and was convincing and the entire cast did a great job. I also enjoyed the soundtrack. The songs were placed perfectly. You can check it out by streaming it at all fine online outlets, but you could also win a private, free viewing from ARS very soon. Details to follow. Finally. “It really will make a huge difference,” she says. “I’m going to ask my pastor to make an announcement at church so hopefully, more people will vote for me.” Speaking of church, that’s a place where a lot of her goodies get consumed. “I’m always bringing things to church,” she says. Vassallo says making one of her cakes — just one — is a long process. When she takes an order, sometimes people ask if she could turn one around same-day.

NUTLEY NEWS But that’s virtually impossible. First, she has to get all the materials to make the cake. And, at times, it can take up to 10 hours to put it all together. It is a laborious process — but the final product, seeing the joy people get when they see her cakes — makes the process all worth the while. In all, winning the contest would not only help Vassallo open her bakery, it would bring the horrendous year 2020 to a much better conclusion. Her mom, who was already not well health-wise, was in a nursing home at the start of the year — and lost her life to COVID-19. “It all happened in three days,” she says. “It hasn’t been the greatest year. Winning would take some of the sting away, for sure.”

Continued from Page 8 of cigarettes, and then allegedly dove across the store counter trying to wriggle his 230 pound frame underneath the anti-COVID plexiglass. Hadam reportedly pushed the store owner and kept reaching for the rack while droning, “Give me the cigarettes.” The storekeeper said she was able to wrest the pack of cigarettes away from Hadam with the help of her 14-year-old son. Hadam reportedly screamed, “You Indians are crazy,” and then left the store. Officers watched surveillance video of the incident and identified Hadam as a man standing across the street from the store. Officer Nunez tried to detain Hadam, who allegedly responded, “F--- this, I didn’t do anything,” before pushing Nunez in the chest and trying to walk away. Officers then had to wrestle Hadam’s arms behind his back to handcuff him. Curiously, Nunez found Hadam had no wallet or means of payment on him. Hadam was charged with robbery, resisting arrest and aggravated assault on police. He was medically cleared and then

incarcerated in the county jail. On Nov. 10 at 5:53 p.m., detectives of the Street Crimes Unit were stopped in an unmarked car at the westbound red traffic light at Kearny and Bergen avenues. When the light turned green, a white BMW passed the detectives in the left-turn-only lane, but instead of turning, it went straight through, cutting off other vehicles. The detectives tried to pull over the BMW with lights and siren on. While other cars pulled over, the BMW continued driving for several blocks. It turned north on Passaic Avenue and finally pulled over about 150 feet from the corner. Driver Domonye T. Kelly, 21, of Brooklyn, was a wanted man in Essex County for a burglary charge, was unlicensed and had suspended driving privileges. In an ashtray in the center console, the detectives say they found a marijuana cigar. Kelly was arrested and charged on a warrant with eluding police and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia. He was issued traffic summonses for driving while suspended, unlicensed driving, improper turn on a marked course and operating a vehicle while in possession of drugs. Kelly was remanded to the Hudson County Jail.
