ignificant changes have been made to the way leaves are collected in the Town of Kearny — and it’s vitally important for residents to be aware of them, especially since some continue to incorrectly follow the old guidelines. No longer will street sweepers come by to pick up leaves piled on streets. In fact, Kevin Murphy, the assistant superintendent of the Department of Public Works, says the sweepers will go around any large piles of leaves left for collection. Instead, residents must follow the new guidelines and are subject to fines if the regulations aren’t followed. See LEAVES, Page 16

Breast Cancer Awareness Month In June 1992, a year after I arrived in the U.S. from Portugal, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. It was a shock to my family, including my two children and me. It was a difficult time – chemotherapy and treatments put a tremendous amount of stress on my family. However, after chemo, radiation and a mastectomy, the cancer was removed from my right breast. Fast forward to 2015, I was found to have cancer in my left breast. But because of my previous experiences, the second time around somehow felt a little bit easier, with the support of the Brave Women (Mujeres Valientes) group, as well as because of the support of my son and daughter, which I am still so grateful for. Because of my own involvement with the group, in the years between my diagnoses, I found inner strength from helping others. I owe thanks to Emma Quintana, for creating the Brave Women. I was able to beat cancer a second time and continue to help others who are facing it. - Edilberta Castro / Newark
