BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY
Kearny’s Nicolle Santos featured in Times Square jumbotron for third-straight year

A
sk anyone who knows Nicolle Santos, of Kearny, and they’ll tell you, among many other things, that the little girl has the biggest heart in the world. And to see her and to know her is to love her. So it should come as no surprise that for the third-consecutive year, her image was featured in the bright lights of New York City’s Times Square as an ambassador to The National Down Syndrome Society. Most recently, she was featured with a short segment on News 12 New Jersey’s Jersey Proud. When she saw her photo in lights for the first time this year, her mom, Nell, caught her pure joy and elation (see photo at left) in a series of pictures and video, even though she’s been featured before — and has even starred in a TV commercial. Nicolle, 7, is a student at Washington School, Kearny. Her mom runs a support group for parents who have children with Down Syndrome.

or many years, UNICO chapters were for men only. There was, and still is, a Lady’s Auxiliary branch of the organi-
zation — and that notion is no different here in Kearny. But things changed in 1997, when UNICO decided the chapters should be open to women. And while the Kearny chapter has had numerous women among its ranks, it’s always been led by
men. Until now. Annamarie Latushko of Kearny last month was sworn-in as the first woman president of the Kearny chapter of UNICO. She was sworn-in by and replaces Louis Pandolfi, who served as the charitable organization’s president
following the untimely death of its former president Joseph Sgalia. The Observer spoke with both Latushko and Pandolfi. The former president says he expects great things will happen under LatushSee UNICO, Page 15
