Alden Leeds blaze sends chlorine into the nighttime sky By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com

A MASSIVE FIRE AT THE ALDEN LEEDS CHLORINE PLANT FRIDAY, MAY 17, AT 55 JACOBUS Ave., in South Kearny, sent plumes of chlorine and smoke into the air and over the Pulaski Skyway, forcing the closure of the elevated roadway in both directions Friday night into Saturday. The first call to the Kearny Fire Department came in at about 9:55 p.m., on a report of smoke conditions in the area of the plant. Upon arrival, Kearny FD Chief Steven Dyl says units immediately detected a heavy smoke condition from a building and a large volume of fire. The four-alarm blaze brought in firefighters from every department in Hudson County; a task force of firefighters from Essex County; four fireboats from the New Jersey Fire Boat Task Force; the FDNY; Hazmat units from the Jersey City and Bayonne fire departments, the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Environmental Protec-
