NO PET SALES HERE

Nutley commissioners consider ordinance to stop pay for pets By Ron Leir rleir@theobserver.com

NUTLEY – he Township of Nutley may be joining the growing chorus of opposition to the puppy and kitten mill syndrome. The Township Board of Commissioners voted last Wednesday, Sept. 6, to introduce an ordinance that would ban the retail sale of cats and dogs. Currently, there are reportedly no pet shops in the township so the proposed law – if it passes – would apply only to any new stores that may come into Nutley. Specifically, the ordinance – which is up for public hearing and adoption Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. – says: “No pet store shall sell, deliver, offer for sale, barter, auction, give away, or otherwise transfer or dispose of cats or dogs.” The proposed law adds this caveat, that, “Nothing … shall prohibit pet stores from collaborating with animal care facilities or animal rescue organizations to offer space to such entities to showcase adoptable dogs and cats.” Leading the charge is Public Affairs Commissioner Steven

person. The windowed ceilings are very high, the natural sunlight is tremendous and the beautiful hanging lights, trimmed in Kardinal red, are stunning. While on tour, several people were See KHS, Page 13
