Mary A. Tortore ti, who for the four decades last was the matria rch of The Observer and who for the last 14 years served as the newspa per’s president, die d Wednesday, Dec at Lenox Hill Hospital in New . 21, York City following a brief yet vali ant fight against can cer. She was 74. Mrs. Tortoreti was born in 194 the Bronx, and 2 in spe years of her life nt the first few there. No ma tter where she wen t after the Bro nx, she always conside red girl and was ver herself a Bronx y proud to tell that to anyone wh o ever asked where she was born. When she was 11, her family moved from the Bronx to Washingto n Township in Bergen County . She would go on to graduate from Westwood High Sch ool. Following hig h school, Mrs. Tortoreti worke d at an insuran ce company, but shortly after star ting her job, she got married at 19 and had two childre n – Lisa Feoren zo, the former publish er of The Obser ver and Tina Feo renzo. absolutely lov ed tha In the 1970s, as t part of her life. her children gre older, she too w k a job at a Gra nd Union in Washin gton Townsh ip and was a meat wra pper. Though she only held the job for a few years, she loved every sec ond of it. In 1972, the true lov e of her life and her second hus band, Anthon y Tortoreti, bought The paper – and you Observer newscould often fi nd her somewhere in The Observer office. During that tim e, she began a basketmaking busine ss – and from a few customers, it eventu that she was ship ally grew so big ping orders to ferent parts of difNew Jersey. And items she ma those de were all hig h-end. In the early yea rs of the Tortore owning The Ob tis ser a weekly colum ver, Mary penned n that appear ed in the newspaper called “The Kit chen Witch.” Indeed , the column’s name was clever – but it was in no way indicative of the kind of per son she was. In fact, eac h week, she sha recipes with rea red ders because she had a passion for the culina ry arts … something tha t stuck with her until see TORTORETI page
