WORKING GENIUS DISCUSSION GUIDE

The Working Genius book and model is all about identifying the type of work that brings you joy, fulfillment and success and avoiding work that leads to burnout and misery. This book club discussion guide is designed to help you apply the lessons in the book to your own life and share insights from the story and model with others. Discover your gifts and transform your work, team and life together.

MEETING 1 WORK (PAGES 7-60) In the beginning, we meet Jeremiah (“Bull”) Brooks and learn about his life. Bull talks about the lessons he absorbed from his father about work. His father used to say, “Bull, if it was fun, they wouldn’t call it work.” Fortunately for Bull, he also meets Joy while working as a bank teller. Joy encourages Bull to find a job he loves.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1.

What lessons have you learned about what role work should play in your life? Which people or jobs influenced your perspective and understanding of work?

2.

Were the messages you received about work explicit (like Joy’s direct advice to find a job you love) or implicit (like by watching your parents and how they approached their work)?

3.

What are your current beliefs about the role of work in your life?

PERSONAL REFLECTION: 1.

Make a timeline of your work life. Capture the roles you played, some notable highs and lows, and what you learned from each role. Now take a moment to look for patterns.

2.

What kind of work has been most fulfilling for you? Least fulfilling? What insight does this give you about the kind of work that best suits you?
