THRESHOLD Activating entry to the city by relating historic and contemporary rhetoric of the built environment stimulates conversation of future priorities within architectural and urban planning. In addition to these relationships, maintaining a close relationship to the natural landscape and waters edge, attempts to synthesize multiple factors to create dynamic architecture. TECTONICS

CONVERGENCE Recognition of historic monuments throughout Cincinnati and the understanding that as significant landmarks, they define the unique fabric of the city, provides a framework in attempts to create an urban epicenter. Utilization of this space in order to educate visitors of Cincinnati, provide them with information of unique opportunities specific to the area, and house functions for local residents. NATIVE HOUSE

HISTORIC COMMENTARY Situated on the banks of the Ohio river, the native house attempts to relate the historical significance of conflict between the Native American presence and the conflict between the Frontiersmen. Focusing on the materials, colors, and efficiency of the Native Americans was the main focus when looking at materials and the way they could be implemented to invigorate the space.

PSYCHOLOGICAL VS. PHYSICAL Understanding the architectural needs of a project situated in a location where surrounding context is a major factor, such as a row house, requires diligent attention to the effect of exterior and the relationship that it instills on interior space. The confined nature of a row house demands the ability to activate habitable volumes in regard to spacial arrangement, light, and sequence. Incorporating unique spaces that are psychologically evocative using standard building techniques was important in this exploration.

ASCENSION Minimizing the building’s disruption of site was important to me. Incorporating inhabitable space within the context of the building provided a continuation for the fabric

MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION Inducing intellectual stimulation within the community in attempts to alleviate the academic isolation created by the hermetic existence often exuded by academic institutions is a central concept in the creation of an institution that strives to reduce the exclusive privilege of the relative few that have the opportunity to attend higher education. Additionally, the need for individuals from different academic backgrounds to collaborate with more frequency is needed in order to solve societies growingly complex challenges.

ACTIVE THRESHOLD The site location for this project is located on the edge of Over-The-Rhine (OTR) which has become a hotspot for social activity, especially young professionals. This area has been re-envisioned and developed from what originated as working-class population of German immigrants in the mid to late19th century, and is believed to be the largest historically intact representations of the urban historic district typology. Having this rich history sets up the framework for future conversations on societal transformations that define this area and might lend itself as a tool to better understand future needs of other similar contexts.

RE-ENVISIONING THE TECTONIC Understanding the diagrid as a tectonic, its strengths and weaknesses, shed light on the manipulation of systems. This was conducive to understanding innovative exploration. Integration of the structural members and the space created between the diagrid raised questions of the aesthetic / structural dialogue in this series.

The transition between vertical and horizontal surface areas initialized the creation of form in these examples. Arraying the initial module into a connected system created a platform utilized to explore and push the formal boundaries of this composition.

ARCHITECTURAL CONGRESS OF OHIO PAVILION While spaces are tailored to the needs of the ACO, we intended our pavilion also to be a fixture of campus life. The building opens to welcome visitors, and its transparency suggests a dissemination of ideas. The expressive plate language departs from everyday experience and prompts a more critical examination of space, views, and light. This gesture engages both designers and the public Group members Kevin Kastle, Evan Sale, Shinji Miyajima, Samantha Schuermann
