It was 1922 when my grandfather Jan and grandmother Cornelia founded Keune Haircosmetics in the Netherlands. With his background as a pharmacist, Jan turned his passion for science towards hair and together with Cornelia, they introduced several groundbreaking products in Europe. A century later and still family owned and operated, Keune was awarded B Corp certification as we care for our planet, concentrating on sustainability and remaining cruelty free with every product we create. More than a quarter of a century ago, I made a personal dream come true when I brought Keune products to North America, harboring the same passion that has enabled Keune to be sold in 90 countries around the world. THE SCIENCE

The Scalp The scalp is the skin of the head that supports and nourishes the hair follicles, playing a vital role in hair growth and overall hair health. A healthy scalp is well-balanced - neither too oily nor too dry - and free from irritation, buildup or flaking.

Proper scalp care is essential because issues like dandruff, inflammation, clogged follicles, or infections can negatively impact hair growth and hair quality including it's thickness, strength and shine. To maintain a healthy scalp, it’s important to keep it clean by shampooing regularly with a shampoo that suits your scalp type or needs.

Exfoliating the scalp once a week—using a treatment or scalp brush—can help remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and product buildup that can clog hair follicles.

Moisturizing the scalp is also key, especially for dry or itchy scalps, and can be done with hydrating ingredients.

For oily scalps, balancing shampoos can help regulate sebum production without over-stripping natural oils. Massaging the scalp during shampooing can stimulate blood circulation, encouraging healthy hair growth. Just like facial skin, the scalp benefits from consistency, specialized products, and protection from excessive sun exposure or harsh chemicals.

Scalp Health and Common Conditions

A healthy scalp is essential for strong hair growth. The scalp produces natural oils called sebum, which nourish hair follicles and maintain moisture balance. However, scalp health can be affected by various conditions, including dryness, oiliness, or irritation.

Dry Scalp: Caused by a lack of moisture, it often leads to itching, flakiness, and dandruff.

Hydrating shampoos can help soothe dryness.

Oily Scalp: Excessive oil production can make hair greasy and limp. Using a balancing shampoo at least once a week and avoiding heavy products at the roots can help control oil buildup.

Sensitive/Itchy Scalp: This can result from product buildup, allergic reactions, or scalp conditions like psoriasis. Using gentle, sulfate-free products and rinsing thoroughly can help reduce irritation.

Scalp Buildup: Caused by excess oil, dead skin cells, and product residue, buildup can clog hair follicles and slow hair growth. Using a clarifying shampoo in combination with a scalp exfoliator can remove buildup and keep the scalp healthy.

To avoid or treat these conditions it is important to use a specifically targeted Care routine that is formulated to maintain a healthy scalp.

Dandruff: Characterized by white or yellow flakes, dandruff is caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called Malassezia.

An anti-dandruff shampoo can help manage the condition.

Hair is often associated with beauty, identity, and self-expression. Its health is closely tied to factors such as genetics, nutrition, scalp condition - and proper care. Understanding the structure and needs of hair is essential for maintaining its strength, shine, and growth throughout its lifespan.

Lastly, protecting hair from the sun by wearing hats or using UV-protectant sprays helps prevent dryness and brittleness caused by prolonged sun exposure.

HYPODERMIS

Several factors affect hair growth and overall health. Genetics play a major role in determining hair thickness, growth rate, and pattern. Nutrition is also crucial, as a diet rich in protein, biotin, iron, and vitamins (A, C,

Proper hair care helps maintain hair strength and appearance. Regularly shampooing hair with the correct shampoo helps keep the scalp clean without stripping away natural oils. Overuse of heat styling tools, such as blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners, can weaken the hair structure, leading to breakage, so it is best to minimize their use and apply a heat protectant when styling.

Regular trims help prevent split ends and keep hair looking healthy. Excessive harsh chemical treatments can also weaken the hair, causing it to become prone to damage. However, with a personalized haircare routine designed to complement in-salon treatments, you can not only protect your hair but extend the longevity of your treatment as well.

DERMIS

Hair grows through a cycle that consists of three main phases. The anagen phase, or growth phase, is when hair actively grows from the follicle. This phase lasts anywhere from two to seven years and determines how long hair can grow. Next is the catagen phase, a short two-to-three-week transitional period where the hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the blood supply. Finally, the telogen phase is the resting period, which lasts about three months before the hair naturally sheds and is replaced by new hair starting the cycle over again.

Chronic stress is linked to a condition called telogen effluvium, which can cause excessive hair loss. EPIDERMIS

Hair is primarily composed of a protein called keratin, which is the same protein that forms nails and the outer layer of skin. Each strand of hair has three layers. The cuticle is the outermost layer, made up of overlapping scales that protect the inner structure of the hair. Beneath the cuticle is the cortex, which contains melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color, and provides strength and elasticity.

Some hair types also have a central core called the medulla, but it is often absent in finer hair.

Hair Types Hair types are categorized based on texture, shape, and curl pattern. The four main types are straight, wavy, curly, and coily, each with its own unique characteristics and care needs.

Type 1 (Straight Hair): This hair type has no natural curl and tends to be shiny because natural oils from the scalp easily travel down the strands. However, it can become oily quickly and may lack volume. Lightweight shampoos and volumizing products can help maintain balance.

Type 2 (Wavy Hair): Wavy hair has a slight bend and forms loose S-shaped waves. It can range from fine to coarse and is prone to frizz.

Using a anti-frizz hair care regime can help define waves without weighing them down.

Type 3 (Curly Hair): This hair type has welldefined curls that range from loose to tight ringlets. Curly hair tends to be drier since natural oils don’t travel down the hair shaft as easily. Hydrating shampoos, leave-in

conditioners, and curl-enhancing creams help keep curls moisturized and bouncy.

Type 4 (Coily Hair): Coily hair has very tight curls or zig-zag patterns. It is the most fragile hair type and requires deep hydration to prevent breakage. Regular deep conditioning treatments, natural oils, and protective styles like braids or twists help retain moisture and reduce manipulation.
