Letter from the President A year ago, it would have been difficult to imagine the changes and challenges we would face in the 12 months ahead. The coronavirus pandemic, which is now beginning to loosen its grip, turned everyday life upside down. But Keuka College has a tradition of overcoming challenges, so it was no surprise to me that our students, faculty, and staff were equal to the test.

Traditional, face-to-face classes have been augmented by remote instruction. The Student Development and Health & Counseling Services staffs have accommodated pandemic-related student needs like quarantine space and COVID-19 testing. The Facilities and Maintenance departments have reimagined campus space, usage, and cleaning protocols. And our students, demonstrating their characteristic determination, have persevered.

As we continue to emerge from the worst of the pandemic, we are intently focused on the future. While we could not have foreseen the events of the past year, we knew the landscape of higher education was already rapidly evolving, so we were prepared for change—even if that change came about more rapidly than we imagined. Part of that preparation included establishment of the Keuka College Vision Council, which was created to chart the course for the College’s immediate, post-pandemic future. Led by Assistant Vice President for Strategic Initiatives Dr. Carrie Roberts, the Council’s guidelines offer a dynamic framework for progress built on our shared values. The priorities are as follows:

As we move forward, I challenge the College Community to use these priorities to guide our everyday actions and thusly the direction of the College. Importantly, these values closely align with our four institutional priorities of being Engaged, Innovative, Inclusive, and Sustainable.

As such, they build on the existing tenets of the College, providing a solid foundation for both student and institutional success. That foundation is vital.

Furthermore, our network of alumni, friends, families, and institutional donors provided immeasurable support over the past year, and were a constant source of strength and encouragement. In the midst of the pandemic, we reached our $30 million goal for The Next 125: The Comprehensive Campaign for Keuka College. The names of those intrepid supporters are listed in this issue, which combines the magazine with our traditional Annual Report.

I have never been as challenged as I have this past year, but I have never been as thankful and proud—or as optimistic about the College’s future. If anything, the experiences of the past year have forged a new commitment among all of us at the College as we emerge from the challenges of a global pandemic and implement our Shared Vision and Guidelines. This past year we have once again demonstrated the tremendous progress that can be made, even amidst immense obstacles, when we Believe in What We Can Do Together.

OUTWITTING

THE RESTRICTIONS

There are advantages to remote learning—like bringing a world of professionals to the classroom.

A

ssistant Professor of Marketing Kimberly DeRuby needed something different for her fall marketing courses. Though the spring semester pivot to remote learning was swift and successful, she wanted to finetune the program in ways that accommodated both hybrid (some classes in person and some online) and online-only formats.

Her goals were threefold: increase engagement, replace the real-world opportunities diminished by remote learning, and promote purposeful networking.

“I wanted my students to have the opportunity to hear from a variety of experts in the marketing and advertising field,” she said.

HER SOLUTION:

The Fall 2020 Marketing Inspiration Series

Professor DeRuby tapped into her own professional network to set up a series of virtual presentations. Speakers (including Dr. Joe Stabb M’11 from Oswego, N.Y.) told her students what they wish they’d known when they were in college or just starting out in their careers—to give the students “Mentorship in the Moment.”

The roster included professionals from The Walt Disney Co., Marvel Entertainment, L.L. Bean, Airbnb, the Detroit Lions, Pinterest, Mented Cosmetics, and PepsiCo. There were women, men, people of color, LGBTQ speakers, early career professionals, and seasoned veterans. They spoke about advertising, public relations, and consumer behavior; personal and professional development; and how they’re handling the curveballs the pandemic is throwing at them. They also encouraged students to connect with them on the LinkedIn business-networking platform, offering to help them as they navigate the early months and years of their careers.

“Introducing them to key marketers in a wide range of industries really gave the students a leg up in building their LinkedIn network,” said Professor DeRuby. “It gave them the opportunity to connect with these talented people that they would have never had the opportunity to connect with all in one semester.”

‘A DREAM COME TRUE’

Junior Skylar Revette, a marketing major from Central Square, N.Y., was thrilled with the series.

“I was telling everyone about how I got to meet all these people who are where I want to be in the future,” she said.

Her favorite was Henry Ong, who’s worked with both Disney and Marvel Entertainment, because he discussed innovative ways of marketing entertainment projects at live events like Comic-Con. She was also impressed with Sandra Pope, a marketer for family-owned, NYC-based restaurant group fresh&co, who has since become her mentor.

To help students get the benefits of working with experienced professionals, Prof. DeRuby established a mentorship program for them. Several, including Skylar, took advantage and are now working with mentors such as Pope and Carianne Polo, chief executive officer at the marketing agency New Park Creative.

Prof. DeRuby plans to expand the mentorship program in future semesters and is working with Skylar, who spent a Field Period® interviewing mentors and mentees about their experiences in the program. Her end project will be a presentation highlighting the benefits of the program for students who will be graduating into a difficult post-pandemic job market.

Prof. DeRuby is already planning The Marketing Inspiration Series 2.0, and Skylar is again looking forward to more expert advice. Until then, she’ll be busy acting on the wisdom she has already gained, planning for another challenging semester, and creating more connections with future colleagues.

I completed my first Field Period® with the media company Nickelodeon and it was a great opportunity. This Field Period® was like a dream come true for me and it assured me that this is definitely the field I want to be working in."

Nancy Campuzano ’24 grew up in Brooklyn with a single mother and three siblings. She’s the second oldest, and when her older brother was incarcerated, Nancy knew she had to be a role model for her younger siblings.

She wanted them to understand that their brother’s path was not the family’s destiny. So she made the choice to attend Keuka College, and show her siblings what is possible.

Angel Sanchez Casado ’21 immigrated to the Bronx from the Dominican Republic with his family. Not knowing the language or culture, Angel was soon in a gang—he just didn’t know it.

When photographed with a member of a rival gang, Angel’s “friends” broke his arm and nose. Not surprisingly, he developed a lack of trust in people, felt terribly alone, and never felt safe. Until coming to Keuka College.

Being the first in her family to attend college, Nancy was adamant about not going far from home. But after learning more about Keuka College, she thought it might be a new experience, and a chance to step out of her comfort zone. And while the rural environment is different from what she has always known, her professors have been supportive and encouraging.

When Angel first arrived on campus, he was unsure about what to do or who to trust. But his Keuka College professors and classmates welcomed him and helped him feel safe. He even joined the Esports team, where he was not only accepted, he met his best friends, who make him feel like family.

The Role Model

While still not sure what major to pursue—elementary education or social work—she sees herself being an elementary school teacher. And she’s already had a lifetime of experience.

She helped her siblings and neighbors’ children with their homework, and worked in summer camps and afterschool programs for kids.

“I know that whatever career I choose, I want to be able to go back to my home, to my family and community, and really make a difference. I’m glad I made the decision to leave [home] because I’m liking what I’m doing," said Nancy.

Overcoming Obstacles

“When I got into Keuka College, I was able to see how people from different places come into one place and make you feel so welcome. I didn’t expect that.

It’s pretty amazing to see myself; to see how many things I accomplished. One of the best things I did was coming to Keuka College; I came to Keuka College and my life changed,” said Angel.

Finding Her Own Strength

Alexis Frederick ’21 arrived at Keuka College as a shy and quiet student with a burning drive to help others. As a freshman, she was determined to step out of her comfort zone and make a difference on campus right away.

“Keuka College made it easy to be who I wanted to be, and to find strengths within myself that I didn’t know I had,” said Alexis, an occupational therapy major from Fairport, N.Y. “I’m the vice president of the Pi Theta Epsilon honor society, a New Student Mentor, and a student director in the Center for Interfaith Engagement.”

Like many families, Alexis and her family were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially when her father was on furlough from his job. Fortunately, her donor merit scholarship from Keuka College helped ease those concerns.

“I’ve learned that there is so much about Keuka College that makes it such a wonderful place to learn and live. I’m so grateful for all the opportunities I have had here to grow as an individual.

I’m excited to bring the values, respect, and sense of citizenship that Keuka College has instilled in me back to my community, and wherever I go in life,” said Alexis.

SUPPORTERS BOOST THE COLLEGE’S “NEXT 125” CAMPAIGN PAST ITS $30 MILLION GOAL

While laboring under the dark clouds of a global pandemic, Keuka College received a huge ray of sunshine this past year: completion of the most ambitious comprehensive campaign in its history.

The Next 125: The Comprehensive Campaign for Keuka College saw more than 3,000 supporters unite to raise $30,386,083 for the College and its students, surpassing the $30 million goal.

This campaign, launched publicly in October 2017, drew support from alumni, parents, faculty, staff, students, and friends, even amid the pandemic.

“The real measure of our success lies in what this campaign will enable Keuka College to do—for our faculty, our students, our programs, and our capacity to serve the everyday needs of the world,” said College President Amy Storey.

“By that measure, it’s hard to overstate what you have helped make possible. Thank you all so very much, for everything you have done for the College, and for our students.”

THE

Dr. Myra Henry ’11 M’13 Takes the Reins of Her Hometown YWCA Dr. Henry makes history as the first woman of color to hold the organization’s CEO position.

F

or Dr. Myra Henry ’11 M’13, Dec. 1, 2020, was a red-letter day. That’s the day she became president and CEO of the YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County (N.Y.).

Not only did she take the reins of the 137-year-old institution, she also became the first woman of color to hold the position.

“As I look around our country and see so many women, especially women of color, breaking glass ceilings around us, I am humbled to be part of this new generation of leaders,” said Dr. Henry. “I’m so proud to be part of a new chapter in the legacy of the YWCA and become a member of its change-agent team. It is a responsibility, a privilege, and a gift, and this is where I was meant to be.”

The Higher Education Decision Dr. Henry believes that all of her experience, and the opportunities she has accepted, have led her to her role at the YWCA. That includes enrolling in classes at Keuka College, which she says helped prepare her for her current position. The College’s high standards and rigor served her well as she pursued her doctoral degree and ascended the career ladder.

“We were required to conduct our own research, hold focus groups, find and analyze quantitative data, and present it at the end of our courses. By going through this process, I was given the foundation I needed to succeed,” Dr. Henry said. “I have been able to apply many of the frameworks and methods learned from the research-based approach in Keuka College’s organizational management and management programs in my career.”

NEW CHALLENGES, NEW

SOLUTIONS Keuka College uses online platforms to create … well, new platforms for traditional events and teaching.

If nothing else, a pandemic is a chance to test the premise that every challenge is an opportunity.

Keuka College passed that test with flying colors (of Green & Gold, of course).

She took classes at Monroe Community College’s (MCC) Damon City Campus, one of Keuka College’s Evening and Online Education satellite locations. The transition was seamless, as she had completed her associate degree at MCC. “As we were preparing to graduate, there was a recruiter from Keuka College ready to talk to us about obtaining our bachelor’s degree,” said Dr. Henry, who earned all of her degrees after the age of 40. “I knew I wanted to earn my bachelor’s degree, and the recruiter explained everything so clearly, and showed me a timeline of what my commitment would be.”

But her academic journey came with a few challenges.

“I had a demanding full-time job, I was married with four kids,” said Dr. Henry.

“But the way the program was set up, I knew exactly when I would be in class and could share the plan with my family and job. The most impactful lesson I learned about tackling challenges is the importance of having a solid plan flexible enough to shift as life happens. Keuka College’s program checked all of the boxes as an adult student.”

Dr. Henry has some advice for others who may be tackling challenges, and it’s simple, she says—just don’t give up.

“With every successful paper or passing grade, that was my reward for overcoming a challenge,” she said.

“Ask questions, look at the people you want to be like. It’s never too late to earn your degree. Put your ego or shame aside and focus on your dreams and goals— they are possible.”

Prepared to Lead “The education I received at Keuka College prepared me to continue elevating the mission of the YWCA,” said Dr. Henry.

“We will get up and do the work until injustice is rooted out, until institutions are transformed, until the world sees women, girls, and people of color the way we do: Equal. Powerful. Unstoppable.”

Forced last spring to discontinue on-campus operations as the nation shut down, the College found new and engaging ways to inform and connect with students, and celebrate achievements and milestones.

A virtual celebration of the Class of 2020 kicked off a parade of digital celebrations over the summer. Online Convocation, Green & Gold Celebration, and Community Day provided new ways for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and friends to gather for traditional events in a nontraditional way.

Faculty members were also quick to adapt to pandemic-related challenges.

Associate Professor of Child & Family Studies Dr. Nicholas Koberstein, to cite one example, designed an online wellness course—aptly titled “Survive or Thrive”— to help incoming students make the most of their College experience.

Meanwhile, the Admissions and Marketing and Communications departments teamed up to host several virtual open houses for prospective students. And with the world glued to its computer screens, Keuka College revamped its website to highlight and elevate the College’s many achievements, success stories, and programs.

“We are a purposely residential College, so of course we would have preferred to have our students on campus,” said College President Amy Storey. “But having to demonstrate some think-onour-feet ingenuity gave us a chance to show our students how to live out one of our institutional values: Nimbleness." winter 2019

COVID

WAS JUST THE BEGINNING

Keuka College’s leader steered the institution through its biggest challenge in generations while taking on a separate, personal battle.

K

euka College President Amy Storey had a sense early on of what 2020 had in store for the world.

She had no idea what it had in store for her.

“I had traveled to China for an educational summit with our partner universities in the Keuka China program in January 2020,” said President Storey, who visited Fujin Province. “When we were there, I could see COVID-19 was going to be a big deal. When it hit Europe, I knew it would come here.

But I had no idea it would be this bad.”

After returning to her Ball Hall office, President Storey began taking steps to help the College navigate the crisis. That’s when a new crisis emerged, during a routine medical exam.

“During a mammogram, they found something and knew it was an issue,” she recalled. “They didn’t say anything then and scheduled me for a biopsy. While I knew there was something wrong, it was still shocking to hear the word ‘cancer.’”

“Amy has expertly and empathetically navigated the College community through an unimaginable year,” said Aqua Porter, chairperson of the College’s Board of Trustees.

“As a new College president taking on so many competing priorities, she has threaded the eye of the needle with a mastery that many would have found impossible.

I am inspired by her leadership on so many levels. She has fortified the College with her confidence, challenged us to be better with a vision for the future, and comforted us in our collective pain and disappointment.”

As the pandemic tightened its grip, that job was bigger than ever.

Sharing Her Journey

Always a proponent of transparency, President Storey decided to make her personal battle public, notifying the Keuka College community of her diagnosis.

Hundreds of emails, cards, phone calls, letters, and videos soon flooded the Lucina.

“I really appreciated the number of messages I received from the College community,” she said. “The thoughts, prayers, and kind words meant the world to me as I learned what the road ahead looked like.”

For the first three months, that road was bumpy. President Storey underwent chemotherapy treatments that sapped her characteristic energy and incisiveness.

“Information on COVID-19 was coming in so fast, and things were happening so quickly, I did not feel like I was clearheaded enough to make some decisions, especially in the early days of the pandemic,” said President Storey, who relied heavily on her Executive Cabinet, including Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Fuster, to share leadership duties.

Still, the president remained active in the College’s day-to-day affairs—to the point of joining virtual meetings from her doctor’s office amid chemo treatments. She admits some days were harder than others, but she never questioned whether she could do the job. Neither did anyone else.

“There was no guidebook for how to operate Keuka College during a pandemic,” said President Storey. “We were following all of the latest information, and as soon as the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a global crisis, I was in contact with college presidents across the nation.”

Optimism Amid the Challenges One of her first steps was empaneling a Reopening Task Force, charged with employing recommendations to ensure the ongoing health and safety of the entire College.

“The people on the Reopening Task Force were amazing, provided insight, and helped plan how best the semester could look, how we should operate, and what that toll would take on our students,” she said.

“I’m so grateful to them.”

That didn’t make some of the past year’s necessary steps, such as pivoting to remote learning during the Fall 2020 semester when COVID cases spiked on campus, any easier.

“If there is a threat to the well-being of the College community, then I need to take that threat seriously and take action to keep all of us safe,” she said. “Knowing something is necessary gives me the will to do it, but it doesn’t make it any easier.

“I know the uncertainty of the last year was nerve-racking,” she continued. “I know it was difficult. And I know that sometimes it was hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. It still is, but I also feel a sense of renewed hope, and that the worst is behind us.”

Keuka College’s 20th president has that same optimism about her cancer treatment.

“A year later, I’m cancer-free, and completed my last chemo treatment in April,” she said. “No one would choose this journey, especially during a pandemic. But while I still have a few surgeries yet to go, my progress is really good. I feel blessed.”

Each is seeing increased growth and need for professionals in the industry. By offering degrees in these areas, Keuka College is continuing its mission to create exemplary citizens and leaders to serve the nation and the world.

Esports Management is much more than playing video games.

Our program integrates aspects of business, marketing, psychology, and communications in an interdisciplinary team environment. Students also have an opportunity to be a member of our Esports team—one of the first in the nation and the first in NCAA Division III.

The Community Health & Wellness degree prepares students to become leaders in educating patients in their health care decisions in nonclinical environments. With this degree, students are advocates for their communities, ready to make an impact on public health.

Our Health Sciences degree aims to guide students toward immediate employment in health promotion, or continued graduate study in a variety of allied health fields. For those students fascinated by science and interested in pursuing a career in the health care sector, Keuka College’s degree in health science is the perfect option.

POWER IN PARTNERSHIPS

Whether entering from a two-year school or continuing with grad studies, Keuka College students benefit from higher-ed partners.

In higher education, it doesn’t hurt to have friends in high places.

Keuka College’s circle of institutional friends is growing considerably wider, with a string of new partnerships providing fast-track educational and dual-degree opportunities for students working toward careers in social work, pharmacology, occupational therapy, health services, and a variety of other high-impact professions.

Over the past year, the College has formalized agreements with: • The University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (ranked #1 in the state by U.S. News & World Report) for a 3+4 PharmD program that allows students to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree on an expedited basis.

• The Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences for a similar partnership that allows students to earn a doctor of pharmacy degree in seven years, rather than eight.

• The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for yet another articulation agreement that provides students a seven-year path to a doctor of pharmacy degree.

• Finger Lakes Community College to expedite graduates from FLCC’s Health Care Studies associate degree program into Keuka College’s Community Health & Wellness bachelor’s program.

• Onondaga Community College to establish a dual-degree program that combines OCC’s associate degree in Human Services with the College’s bachelor’s degree in Social Work.

• Jamestown Community College, Bryant and Stratton College, and Erie Community College to accept graduates for the College’s Occupational Therapy program.

ADDITIONAL SUCCESS IN A DIFFICULT YEAR

KEUKA COLLEGE BEGINS WORK ON NEW NURSING LABS

The center will feature six distinct labs and address a pressing need for more health care professionals in the region.

Keuka College is building on its 75-year history of producing outstanding nursing professionals.

Literally.

With the help of a $1 million lead gift from alumna Juanita Rotz Hawkins ’67, a longtime member of the Board of Trustees, the College has begun work on an expanded, multidisciplinary nursing facility.

“The new labs will ensure Keuka College nursing students are able to work with state-of-the-art equipment, gaining hands-on experience they will take into their careers,” said Keuka College President Amy Storey. “This will benefit not only our students but the region, as the need for additional health care professionals—especially nurses—throughout the Finger Lakes is well documented.”

The College’s current nursing lab, housed in Harrington Hall, is being renovated into a simulated health system.

The upper two floors will become residential space reserved for students majoring in health-related professions such as nursing, occupational therapy, and social work, creating a fully immersive living-learning environment.

The renovation will create six distinct labs: clinical skills, primary care, telemedicine, virtual reality, residential, and anatomy and physiology. Each space will mirror real-world scenarios and feature functional equipment enabling students to practice their skills.

Graduates will enter a market hungry for their services.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor projects employment in health care occupations will grow 14 percent by 2028. And Rochester-based researcher Common Ground Health has identified a variety of professions where the need will be the greatest, including nurse practitioners, social workers, and occupational therapists.

Keuka College has already been working actively to address the region’s insufficient numbers of medical professionals.

Within the past three years, the College has: • Added a new bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences; • Updated its RN to BSN program for working nurses; • Established a Dual Degree Nursing program in partnership with the Finger Lakes Health College of Nursing & Health Sciences; and • Formalized a partnership with Finger Lakes Community College to allow graduates from FLCC’s Health Care Studies associate degree program to move seamlessly into Keuka College’s new Community Health & Wellness bachelor’s program.

“As a retired Johnson & Johnson executive, Juanita Hawkins is one of our trustees who has a deep understanding of the positive impact access to health care can have on a community,” said President Storey. “Her gift is an amazing demonstration of support for our students, and we could not be more appreciative. We’re also incredibly grateful to trustee Don Wertman and Chris Wertman for their dedication and support of this critical project and to health care in the Finger Lakes region in general.”

Mrs. Hawkins says contributing to the center is one way to help provide Keuka College students with the same opportunities for a solid education and life lessons that she enjoyed.

“It is my pleasure to give back to Keuka College because the College was instrumental in preparing me academically and strategically,” she said. “The lessons learned taught me so much about science but also about other cultures; they also taught me the need to recognize and build on the talents within me and the talents of others working with me.”

NO GAMES, BUT STUDENT-ATHLETES HAD A GREAT

KEUKA COLLEGE MEETS PANDEMIC CALL FOR SOCIAL WORKERS At a time when the nation is experiencing an increase in social justice and mental health issues, Keuka College is contributing essential professionals to attack these challenges—in some cases at a clip higher than any college in the state.

The College was first among New York’s private and public colleges and universities in 2019—the most recent year for which data is available—in terms of the number of graduates with bachelor’s degrees in Social Work. According to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, Keuka College’s 138 graduates were tops in the state.

“Our Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work is one of Keuka College’s signature programs and with good reason,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Fuster.

“One of Keuka College’s goals is to educate graduates who go on to serve and strengthen their communities, and a Social Work degree enables them to do that in a myriad of ways. And since the onset of the pandemic, that work is more important than ever.”

Because a bachelor’s in Social Work can lead to so many different careers that touch on improving conditions for those facing challenges, the need for professionals in these fields has become more pronounced, says Keuka College Associate Professor of Social Work and Division Chair Dr. Jason McKinney.

“It’s incredible, the number of people who are seeking assistance because of stress, anxiety, and adjustment disorders due to COVID-19,” said Dr. McKinney, citing pandemic-

generated challenges ranging from loss of employment to reduced social engagement to parenting strategies while the entire family works and learns from home. “All of these issues can lead to depression and anxiety.”

And it’s not just the pandemic. The ongoing racial justice reckoning and partisan divisions gripping the nation can also take a toll.

“Politics and social justice issues can drive a wedge in relationships and cause family conflict,” said Dr. McKinney, who also manages a private practice. “We’re seeing that, too.”

If the issues are varied, so too is the preparation Keuka College’s Social Work graduates receive. And the College’s small size ensures students get personalized attention from faculty whether they enter the Social Work bachelor’s degree program, which was reaccredited in October, or continue on to earn a master’s in Social Work, a clinical program geared toward psychotherapy.

“The quality of education that we get is amazing,” said Malen Moeri ’21.

“Probably my favorite part is the close relationships that the students and the professors have with one another.

Because we’re such a small school and program, we build relationships from Day One.”

FALL SEASON

Keuka College lands more than 130 students on the Empire 8 honor roll for high academic achievement.

Keuka College’s first winning performance in its new Empire 8 Athletic Conference turned out to be in the classroom, rather than on the field.

The Empire 8 President’s List, which honors student-athletes earning gradepoint averages of 3.75 or higher, included 131 Keuka College students for the fall semester, placing the College fourth in the nine-team conference.

Keuka College student-athletes posted an overall 3.37 grade-point average for the semester, up from the cumulative 3.27 the Wolves earned during the 201920 academic year.

The College boasted 54 student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fall: 10 on the women’s soccer team, eight on the women’s volleyball team, and seven among men’s soccer players.

The fall semester marked the entrance of Keuka College into the Empire 8 Conference—though the coronavirus pandemic kept athletes off the field. But the Conference and the College announced plans for athletics competition during the spring semester and on Friday, March 5, the long-awaited first conference games were held as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams took the court against Nazareth College.

Tom Drumm ’15 received the 2020 Keuka College Alumni Association Graduate of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award.

He cites his Keuka College education, the principles he was taught, and the people he met as helping to mold him into the person he is today. Tom credits his Field Period® experiences with helping him decide to make a run for political office— and win—at just 22 years old. In fact, Tom is the youngest Democrat in Oswego County (N.Y.) history elected to the County Legislature.

Kerry Fitch ’05 received the Professional Achievement Award.

Two days before her graduation, Kerry was offered a position at Penn Yan Academy, where she taught Social Studies for seven years. She then became a staff developer/ mentor teacher for the Penn Yan Central School District. A prolific writer, she is active in giving back to Keuka College, where she has served as a guest speaker for Student Teaching Seminar classes and has assisted student teachers, Field Period® students, and tutors on topics such as classroom management and preparing for the Teacher Performance Assessment.

Teresa “Terry” Test ’73 received the Effective Use of Retirement Award. Since retiring in June 2016, Terry’s primary focus has been volunteering at Clinton Crest Manor in Penn Yan. She has also worked with a variety of community members to improve mobility following illness or stroke. In addition, Terry teamed up with Associate Professor of English Dr. Jennie Joiner, chair of the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts, and Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy Dr. Kristin Bacon for projects involving College students writing and publishing area residents’ stories, and creating shadowboxes reflecting what the residents have shared.

Carolyn McLaughlin ’76 received the Community Service Award. She’s involved in a number of philanthropic organizations around the Albany, N.Y., area, and has donated her time, dollars, and expertise to improve life in her hometown for nearly three decades. She consistently advocates for equitable distribution of resources to advance the quality of life across all neighborhoods in Albany and is vocal in helping the city face challenges such as affordable housing, rehabilitation of abandoned property, childcare, and senior services.

Louise K. Aitcheson ’85 received the Professional Achievement Award.

Louise is a dedicated advocate for New York’s small and medium-sized manufacturers.

As a testament to her success, Louise was named the Foundation for Manufacturing’s Industry Advocate of the Year—one of only two professionals out of 1,300 to receive the award. Louise credits her Keuka College education with catapulting her professional career. A Field Period® experience led her to jobs in New York City and Albany. She was then recruited by Light & Power in Troy, N.Y., which gave her invaluable sales experience with large companies and organizations— skills she still uses today in her role as vice president for business development for the Center for Economic Growth Inc. (CEG) in Albany.

Keuka College’s student center has a new focal point—and its use is limited only by students’ imagination.

One of Keuka College’s best spaces for students has a new name.

The renovated D-46 Lounge in the Dahlstrom Student Center—onetime home of the College bookstore—has been rechristened as the William H. and Juanita Rotz Hawkins ’67 Lounge or, more informally, the Hawkins Lounge.

The title comes in appreciation of the strong support that Mrs. Hawkins and, before his passing, Mr. Hawkins have demonstrated to the College—both over the years and for the D-46 renovations in particular.

“Keuka College is blessed to have incredibly generous alumni like Juanita, who have helped enhance the College experience for, literally, thousands of students,” said College President Amy Storey. “She’s been a staunch supporter on many projects. With the Hawkins Lounge, it’s nice to finally see her publicly acknowledged.”

Mrs. Hawkins said she’s simply giving back.

“It is my pleasure,” she said. “Both my husband and I benefited from the Keuka Experience and we have felt very grateful to be part of the Keuka College family.”

The reimagined gathering space was a year in the making. The walls were removed and a handicap-accessible ramp was added, along with new ceilings and flooring and a projection screen used for presentations, movies, and games.

Formerly used as a bookstore and then a makeshift classroom and event space, the lounge has new purpose and vitality—even as students adhere to social distancing and other publichealth protocols while gathering there.

Keuka College’s Alumni Association helps graduates stay connected to the College and their former classmates. Its Executive Council represents alumni from different eras, while regional chapters bring together alums in specific areas.

CLASS NOTES

In Loving Memory of

DR. ESTHER CARTER YODER ’60 The passion Dr. Esther Carter Yoder ’60 had for Keuka College ran deep. From humble beginnings as a farm girl from West Auburn, Pa., Esther became a successful businesswoman, one who never forgot her beloved alma mater. She passed away on Feb. 15.

“Esther was so full of energy, and was one of the most recognized and respected members of Keuka College,” said College President Amy Storey.

“She had an immense love for, and devotion to, Keuka College. She was one of a kind, a true inspiration and leader. I know her contributions and legacy will live on in each member of the College community. Her death is a tremendous loss for our campus community.

I will miss her deeply.”

Esther, a Christian education major, was the second woman in her family to attend Keuka College, following her aunt, Ruth Carter Breitweiser ’38. Her cousin, Annita Breitweiser, is a member of the College Class of 1975.

After graduation, Esther and her husband, Herb, opened an antiques restoration business in Endicott, N.Y. A few years later, Herb developed Lou Gehrig’s disease and, later, cancer. Esther knew she had to make a career change, so she began working at the local Subway shop.

The rest is Subway history.

Esther advanced from general manager to field representative to helping open scores of franchises across the country and around the world. Over the years, she helped Subway grow from 50 locations to more than 30,000—four of which she owned near her home in Gainesville, Fla.

She and her brother co-owned several additional Florida franchises.

But even as Esther was traveling the world, Keuka College was never far from her heart. A regular supporter of the Keuka Fund and Day of Giving, Esther served in vital roles in five major College campaigns, including The Next 125: The Comprehensive Campaign for Keuka College.

“One of the happiest moments of my life was when we completed that first campaign, of which Esther was the lead giver,” said Trustee Emeritus Paul Bradley, speaking at Esther’s memorial service. “The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra came to that first campaign celebration and, as the concert concluded, the conductor called Esther to the front, handed her the baton, and she led the orchestra in the Keuka College Alma Mater. It tears me up to this day.”

An emerita trustee, Esther served on the College’s Board of Trustees in various capacities, including chairperson, for 20 years. She was a member of the College’s Johnson-Anderson Heritage Society, the Alumni Association’s Executive Council, and President-Emeritus Dr. Arthur F. Kirk’s Alumni Advisory Board.

Esther said she would not have achieved her success without her experience at Keuka College, which allowed her to “develop good thinking, be people-orientated, and community and service conscious.”

Friends are invited to contribute memories to a book her stepdaughter, Patty, intends to write.

Eugenie Smith Baker ’40 celebrated turning 101 in September 2020. Two classmates, Jean Otto MacIntosh ’41 and Mary Butterfield Congdon ’41, each celebrated turning 101 in October 2020.

Julia Lobotsky ’43 and Carolyn Klinge ’79 were able to get together and catch up in November 2018. Betty M. Miles ’43 reports she has been able to spend time with her grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mary Smith Mack ’50 and classmate Grace Kaut ’50 got together for a visit in September 2018.

“Grace and I had a wonderful day together at my granddaughter’s summer place near Narrowsburg, N.Y. We were roommates for two years, and had not seen each other for many years,” says Mary.

Pat Radley Rogers ’58 gathered with some of her classmates and their husbands in October 2019. Joining her were Dorothy Hunter Pappas ’58 and her husband, Jim, Jean Warren King ’58 and her husband, Doug, Helen Scanlon Slominski ’58 and her husband, Ray, Marilyn Ernst Stricker ’58, Kay Tuttle Meisch ’58 and her husband, John, and Linda Holmes McKenna ’58. Margaret Smallenburg Breyer ’59 was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma early in 2019. “I am now in remission, going from a level four to a level two, thanks to immunotherapy,” reports Margaret.

Jane Davis Crosby ’60 became a greatgrandmother for the second time in April 2019.

“I spent the winter in Myrtle Beach—our 25th winter here,” says Jane. “Love playing golf and do plenty of it here.” Jane says she sees classmate Donna Kinney Smith ’60 regularly, and Jane continues her water aerobics exercise regimen in Myrtle Beach.

Margareta Burman ’60 spent her junior year as a foreign exchange student at Keuka College. In 2019, she published a memoir called Av fröjd och smärta (Of Joy and Pain). “It compares the life of my mother with mine when we were in our twenties,” says Margareta. “Every second chapter tells about my adventures at Keuka College, the honor system, Field Period®, the dating system, parties, outings, and what not. It was a long time ago, but the memories never vanish.”

Sandra Kirkpatrick Rozek ’62 says her life is “more of the same, keeping track of 10 grandchildren at varying distances, and readying our small town for various events.”

Sandy’s efforts include helping celebrate the 200th anniversary of her church, substitute teaching, preparing for multiple organizations’ holiday events, and attending activities of her children and grandchildren.

Nancy Feuss Roney ’64 says that during the past several years, the Class of 1964 has been working on a memorial for those classmates who have passed away since graduation. “Thanks to Billy Jo Jayne ’10 [Keuka College’s senior director of alumni relations and development], a garden was created near the Allardice Alumni Center,” says Nancy. “We planted flowers and bushes that are favorites of some of our friends. We’re pretty excited about this project!” Along with the garden, there is a bench with an inscription, some native stone, and ornamental grasses. In addition, Nancy wanted to share “how very much I LOVE the online Alumni Newsletter! Thanks so much for initiating this means of updating all of us!” Liz Weeks Musil ’65 says that after 10 years of working till 2 a.m. as an emergency mental health clinician, she retired. Or, she thought she did! “After a few months of rest, I returned to private practice, and am seeing about 20 patients a week—and enjoying it! Often think of awakening to the bagpipes from across the lake.” Shiela Estelle Record-Stanley ’67 has kept busy with her involvement in her interfaith ministries. From keeping up with her family to volunteering at churches near her home, Shiela has also volunteered with such social action groups as Greater Boston Interfaith Organization, Black Ministerial Alliance, and Mass Peace Action. But the highlight of her year was a Civil Rights pilgrimage. “With my bangs dyed blue, I celebrated my 73rd birthday on June 6, 2018, at the birthplace of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Atlanta. I then traveled to Memphis.” Shiela sends her thanks for the thoughts and prayers through the years. She wishes “all humankind to have good health and safety, love and growth, justice, and peace.” Marjorie Underwood ’67 reports that her husband of 44 years, Steve Godersky, passed away a few years ago after a long illness. “I had retired the year before from my position as manager of infection prevention and control at Oregon Health & Science University to spend more time with him.

I continue to live in a 100-plus-year-old loft in the Pearl District of Portland, Ore. I enjoy being in a dynamic city with so much going on—always something to do. And, happily, my son also lives in Portland.” Susie Lusink Yarnall ’67 and twin sister Joanne Lusink LeRoy ’67 won first place in the national twins’ golf event in Twinsburg, Ohio.

It was part of the festivities for Twins Days, the world’s largest gathering of twins. Joyce Cohen ’67, Board of Trustees emerita, co-founded My Future Purpose, an organization assisting individuals, professionals, and organizations to harness the power of purpose by providing weekly speakers, quarterly workshops, virtual retreats, and collaborative initiatives to guide participants to discover their purpose. Major General Lorraine K. Potter ’68, retired chief of chaplains for the U.S. Air Force, shared her story about the challenges she faced working in the military as the veterans Day 2020 discussion leader for the organization My Future Purpose, co-founded by Board of Trustees Emerita Joyce Cohen ’67. During the virtual presentation, to more than 40 Keuka College alumnae from across the country, Lorraine shared lessons learned on the job and in life, how she was responsible for her own training, and how that helped her become a leader.

Patricia Danco Clyne Lindberg ’68 and Susan Hotaling Ogle ’68 had a mini 50th Class Reunion at Sue’s home in Westerly, R.I., in March 2018. Pat and her husband, Art, spent several days with Sue and her husband, Pete.

Art was the keynote speaker at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport on counterespionage.

Bette Kisner ’68 is semi-retired, working one day per week in her psychiatric private practice as a psych nurse, psychotherapist, and prescriber in Canton, Mass. Bette also serves as the treasurer for the PAC (political action committee) of her professional organization, Massachusetts Association of Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurses (MAAPPN). The organization is working to eliminate the current requirement of supervision of a psychiatrist in order to prescribe psychotropic medications, among other healthrelated legislation. “I continue to be happy in my nine-year relationship with my partner, James Donovan, Ph.D. (a clinical psychologist), and make yearly visits to my step-family in the UK.” Nan Avery McEntire ’68 participated in a coast-tocoast bike-a-thon to benefit the Fulbright Association.

“My Fulbright of 2010 in Ireland was an outstanding experience,” she said on the web page promoting her trip. “I want to make sure that Fulbright continues to provide a strong and viable professional program for teachers and scholars throughout the world.” Nan rode with members of CrossRoads Cycling, an organization that gives participants the option of raising money for nonprofit causes of their choice.

As the president of the Utah Chapter of the Association, Nan also is serious about giving back to the program from which she received so many priceless experiences. Nan began her journey May 11, 2019, in Los Angeles, and finished on June 29, 2019, in Boston. Her ride took her through 15 different states, covering an average of more than 90 miles per day, and the group was able to visit many local sites and landmarks.

Gail Hoffman Hale ’69 and Susan “Springy” Springhorn Vaseleniuck ’69 enjoyed Christmas 2019 in Hawaii. Lisbeth “Liz” Flink English ’69 received the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Long Island Board of Realtors. A Realtor for 35 years, Liz was honored for her unwavering commitment to LIBOR, and her invaluable contribution as both a past president and a leader of RPAC.

Janice Wildman Toomajian ’74 had a wonderful reunion with Sheila Morris Truelove ’74 in York, England, in the fall of 2018. “Sheila brought a scrapbook from our College years, which included photos of our 1973 KWES adventures,” says Janice.

Marguerite "Mic" Cahn Durbin ’74 has a second grandchild, Eddie. He joins big sister Ceci. “I so enjoy being a Mimi,” says Mic. Donna Heseltine Ahnert ’75 says she is staying young working with Red Cross Youth Club members. “I received my 40-year pin from the Red Cross Volunteer Office,” says Donna. “I am still working with Red Cross Disaster Health Services.” Donna also reports that her second grandson, Wesley Kurt, was born Sept. 7, 2018.

Sharon Briggs Fredericks ’75 and her husband, Jack, welcomed their fourth grandchild. “Vivienne Rose was born March 6, 2018, to our daughter Olivia and her husband, Jeff,” says Sharon.

“Family, church, and community activities keep us very busy in our retirement years.”

Deborah Sabin ’75 recently published her 10th book, and it is the first she wrote using her real name (she uses the pen name Morgan Malone). “I’ve been writing this book since 2013, and decided to publish this year at the request of my youngest brother Jon, who died on June 26,” says Debbi. The book, 32 Days: A Memoir of Love and Death, chronicles the days after Debbi’s husband, Mitchell Hallow, was left paralyzed from the neck down after a tragic pool incident in 1988. Jennifer Annis Wells ’76 received tickets to a Cleveland Indians baseball game back in 1966, a reward for earning good grades in school. The game was set for Aug. 20, 1966. But exactly one week prior, Aug. 13, 1966, Jennifer was hit by a train. She recovered, finished high school, and graduated from Keuka College with a social work degree. Fifty-two years later, she came to Cleveland and tried to use her old tickets. The Indians honored the tickets and she was finally able to see a game. The Tribe took it

Brian DelPino ’14 graduated from medical school at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York City and is a general surgery resident in Illinois. “I couldn’t have made it this far without the support of my professors in the natural sciences department,” says Brian. “Thank you!” Ariel Scott ’14 accepted a position with the University of Rochester Medical Center as a financial counselor. “I am very thankful for all the professors at Keuka College who helped me throughout the years,” she says. “I would like to thank my advisor Dr. Anita Chirco [former professor of communication studies] for being very supportive of every position I held leading up to accepting my current role. Heidi Van Buskirk ’16 found that after receiving her bachelor’s degree in biology—with the intent to enter the medical field—her gears have shifted completely. “I wanted to be part of something more impactful, follow my passion for environmental conservation, and be a role model for young women who want to enter a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field,” she says. Heidi works for NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory in Miami, which has “always been a dream of mine, and now that I’ve achieved it, I realize that no goal is too ambitious or unattainable if you’re willing to work hard for it.

My job as a science communications specialist with NOAA gives me the opportunity to translate groundbreaking research to stakeholders and the public, which means I get to share my love for science as my full-time job. It’s also allowed me some pretty amazing experiences in the

field with hurricane researchers and oceanographers,” she says. Brooke Ferguson Wagner ’16, M ’17 and Jared Wagner ’15 bought a house in Lima, N.Y., this past year! Along with being a full-time school social worker, Brooke recently became an adjunct professor for Keuka College’s Adult and Online Education’s Social Work program. “We are really excited for this new adventure and to return as members of the KC family!” Brooke says. Katy Standinger BS ’16 M’17 and Aaron Rydzynski BS ’16 became engaged to be married on April 4, 2020. The surprise proposal took place at Garrett Chapel, where the couple had spent time together over the years appreciating the unique scenery and each other.

Right after the proposal, the two returned to the Keuka College campus, a location that holds such an important, meaningful place in their hearts, to document their first moments as an engaged couple. Katy and Aaron first met while both attending Keuka College and have been dating since their junior year in 2015. It seemed only fitting to experience and celebrate such a special occasion at the place where they had their first memories and grew together into such an amazing couple. Harley Carter ’17 is the manager of donor relations and engagement at Keuka College. As a student, Harley used her senior practicum to work in the Office of Development, where she developed an interest in fundraising. “I look forward to building relationships and bonding over our shared Keuka College experiences,” she says.

Jessica Chapman ’18 M’19 accepted a job with Ventura Medstaff in Fairbanks, Alaska, as a school occupational therapist at Fairbanks North Star Borough School District for the 2019-20 school year. “After that, I plan to continue with travel therapy and see where it takes me!” she says. Rory Doremus ’18 is a physician assistant student for 2020-21 at UR Medicine Thompson Health. After graduating, Rory enrolled in the Physician Assistant Studies master’s degree program at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.

LONGTIME KEUKA COLLEGE SUPPORTER DAVID ALLARDICE PASSES AWAY He Will Be Remembered for His Deep Affection for Keuka College Two of the most recognizable names on the Keuka College campus are David and Dr. Barbara Schaefer Allardice. Barbara is a member of the Keuka College Class of 1961, and David, while not an alumnus, was a true Keukonian.

David passed away Jan. 19, 2020, but his connection to Keuka College will forever remain strong. It began when Barbara enrolled, and some 60 years later, the relationship they have with the College has just gotten stronger.

And that strong relationship is a model for how he and Barbara have lived their lives, focusing on building and maintaining relationships, with each other, their family and friends, and with Keuka College.

David always gave generously of his time, treasure, and talent to the College. In fact, he worked at the College in the late 1960s and early 1970s as a dedicated fundraiser, while Barbara served as the College’s director of student programs.

The relationships Barbara and David have formed at Keuka College, not only with its alumni, but its staff, faculty, trustees, and students, are extensive and robust. That’s why, in addition to supporting myriad College initiatives for some six decades, David and Barbara established the Dr. Barbara S. ’61 and David Allardice Alumni Center in October 2015.

The Center provides the perfect setting to continue the extraordinary relationships Barbara and David have invested in so significantly. The Center is meant to ensure—and enhance—the longstanding bonds between the College and its alumni, guaranteeing the transfer of the Keuka College spirit from generation to generation by bringing alumni together in a place they can call their own.

And it is not just the Keuka College community David and Barbara support—they equally invest in the students of David’s alma mater, Bryant University in Rhode Island.

“I was fortunate my parents provided the money I needed to go to school,” said David in a 2011 interview in Bryant University’s magazine.

“Education is a need, and students today have financial challenges. It’s important to us that students realize there are people out there to help ease the financial burden, and then one day, they will give back in the same way as the people helping them.”

In fact, David believed that education can open doors, so it is fitting, then, that he and Barbara support a variety of scholarships and myriad other College initiatives, both at Keuka College and Bryant University.

In addition to working at Keuka College, David also served in the Army and worked at Lincoln National Bank. David was a financial planner, and was instrumental in advising many New York state municipalities and nonprofits to establish bond funding through his work at Municipal Solutions, Inc. College President Amy Storey relied on David’s expertise when she needed advice through the College’s recent USDA application process.

The impact David and Barbara have on Keuka College is inspiring, and will be felt for generations to come.

The Allardice Alumni Center is a physical reminder of his and Barbara’s love for not just Keuka College, but each person connected to the College.

“The most important aspect for us was to leave a legacy—to make sure that people would know how much we love and care about Keuka College long after our psychical presence departs the world,” said Barbara in 2014. “And I truly hope that other people will see this and consider ways in which they can leave a legacy, large or small, that promotes something they love. For us, it’s people. Keuka College people.”

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ESTABLISHED TO HONOR TREVOR IRBY ’17 Keuka College and the family and friends of Trevor Irby ’17 are honoring his memory the way he would have wanted: by celebrating life and learning in the form of an honorary scholarship.

Trevor was one of three people who lost their lives in a mass shooting at a garlic festival in Gilroy, Calif., in July 2019.

The Trevor Irby ’17 Memorial Scholarship will each year assist a student who emulates Trevor’s compassion, love for life, and positive energy.

Together, they established the Keuka College Golf Classic, the proceeds from which benefited Keuka College scholarship funds. Fran passed away March 25, 2014.

Michael Healy 5•27•19 Michael was the 2017 recipient of the College’s Stork Award. His daughter, Kimrose Healy Dean ’98, has served on the College’s Community Associates Board.

Gary Hickernell 4•21•20 Gary taught chemistry for 12 years at the College. He retired in 2002.

Arthur P. “Bud” Keller 7•27•19 Bud served as a Board of Trustees member from 1977-86, is a trustee emeritus, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2003. In addition, the Keller family named Ball Hall’s carillon and chimes. His daughter, Kathie Keller, is a member of the Class of 1978, and served on the College’s Board from 1988-97.

Dr. John E. Settle Jr. 5•15•19 He and his wife, Audrey Dixon Settle ’67, established the John and Audrey Settle Scholarship. Created in 2010, the scholarship benefits the education of a student of color.

Evelyn M. Frum 7•28•19 Evelyn worked in the College’s Office of Admissions.

Karen Spychalski 7•4•19 Karen served as the administrative assistant in the Division of Business and Management.

Dr. Corinne “Corry” Stork 8•29•20 Along with her husband, the late Dr. Donald Stork, Corry was one of the most recognized and respected members of the Keuka College and Penn Yan communities.

A former Keuka College employee, Corry, along with Don, has given generously and consistently to Keuka College and served the College in many capacities, co-chairing such committees as the Campaign Steering Committee, Regional Gifts Committee, and Trustees Gift Committee, among several others.

Both Don and Corry were awarded honorary degrees from Keuka College in May 2001.

Dr. Wayne W. Wagner 1•31•21 Dr. Wagner served on the College’s Board of Trustees from 1981-93. Dr. Wagner’s tenure included stints as the Board’s vice chairman and chairman. He also served on the Board’s Compensation Committee, Student Affairs Committee, Development Committee, and the Financial Affairs Committee. He also was a member of the Steering Committee, Leadership Gift Committee, Trustees Gift Committee, and the Advanced Gifts Committee for the Centennial Campaign. In honor of his service to Keuka College, Dr. Wagner was elected trustee emeritus in May 1997.

Dr. John E. Van de Wetering Dr. Van de Wetering served as a Keuka College trustee from 2002-11.

Dr. Marianne Jahnke 8•8•20 Dr. Jahnke was hired in 1990 as a member of the College’s Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, where she taught biology.

Her commitment to the College was evident in her service over the years as division chair, faculty secretary, and faculty advisor to the Keuka Circle Fellowship Program. She was also a strong advocate for the College’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

Marianne was a dedicated academic in her specialty areas of human biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, and chemistry. She researched and published papers in prestigious, peer-reviewed journals including Analytical Biochemistry, the Journal of Biochemistry, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

A resident of Keuka Park, Marianne was also active with the Penn Yan Volunteer Ambulance Corps after earning her certification as an emergency medical technician in 1992. Having concluded her teaching career at Keuka College in May 2020, Dr. Jahnke received professor emerita status posthumously.

DR. HEATHER MALDONADO

Named New VP for Student Development Keuka College has tapped a veteran western New York educator to fill a new role focused on student engagement and success.

Dr. Heather Maldonado, who served most recently as assistant provost at Buffalo State College, has joined Keuka College as vice president for student development.

The cabinet-level position is charged with providing the vision, strategy, and leadership required to ensure Keuka College’s students achieve excellent outcomes.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to bring my skills and experiences to Keuka College and the VPSD role so I can provide the vision, strategy, leadership, advocacy, and assessment needed to help Keuka College adopt an integrated, whole-person approach to student development that spans across the functional areas of the College and the full college career of all Keuka College students,” said Dr. Maldonado.

She said the more she learned about the College, the more reason she found to join the administration.

“The unique opportunities—such as Field Period® and outdoor experiences— offered at the college, the studentcentered focus articulated by President Storey, the highly engaged students I met during my day on campus, the direction the Keuka College is heading as expressed in the revised strategic plan, the passion

and collegiality found among staff and faculty, and the alignment of Keuka College’s mission, vision, and values with my own professional beliefs all deepened my interest in Keuka College,” she said.

Dr. Maldonado brings more than 20 years of experience in a variety of administrative, higher-education roles, including as assistant dean and, most recently, associate provost for academic success at Buffalo State College. That’s exactly the background the College was looking for, said President Amy Storey.

“When it comes to student success, the majority of the challenges are not academic, but personal,” said President Storey. “Having an expert in student development theory at the College will help us deliver on our mission, ‘To create exemplary citizens and leaders to serve the nation and the world.’ I’m looking forward to the implementation of Dr. Maldonado’s comprehensive strategies, which are specifically designed to support students.”

Dr. Maldonado’s areas of responsibility will include Student and Residence Life; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Athletics; and Student Programming for Auxiliary Services.

“Educating the whole student stretches far beyond the confines of our classrooms, labs, studios, and library,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Fuster. “As a residential college, our students spend the vast majority of their

time out of the classroom, and I’m excited to partner with Dr. Maldonado to capitalize on those moments as learning opportunities.”

Dr. Maldonado earned her Ph.D. from the University of Buffalo, her master’s degree from Ohio State University, and her bachelor’s degree from SUNY Geneseo.

In another change to the College's leadership structure, Pete Bekisz ’12 was recently promoted to vice president for Advancement, Communications, and Technology.

Mr. Bekisz, who has been with the College since 2006—most recently as associate vice president for Advancement, Communications, and Technology— oversees marketing, communications, alumni relations, advancement services, the annual fund, major and planned giving, grant writing, government and community relations, College-wide events, conference services, and information technology.

He’s an active community volunteer who serves on the boards of Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes and the Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board.
