Four-part drama dives into literary mystery

An All-Star Teacher

RELIES ON KET

For Leslie Hall, a science teacher in Daviess County, education has always been more than just a job — it’s a calling. And that calling began, Hall says, at a young age in part by what she watched on KET.

Like many children growing up in Kentucky, Hall spent countless hours immersed in programs like Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, Sesame

Street, Arthur and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? But it was The Magic School Bus that left a lasting impression.

“The excitement of watching it at school and following Ms. Frizzle’s adventures made science fun and relatable,” Hall says. “Her passion for teaching sparked my own love for science and education, and now, as a teacher, I strive to channel

my inner Ms. Frizzle every day!”

Hall believes KET more than lives up to calling itself “Kentucky’s Largest Classroom.” “I encourage every educator to explore the incredible, free resources available through KET,” she says. “As a science teacher, I frequently utilize their science materials, which align directly with Kentucky’s academic standards. The user-friendly format

The KET Education team’s and their support for educators is evident in everything they do.

TODAY’S KET

unwavering dedication to learning

Science

allows educators to seamlessly integrate them into their classrooms.”

Hall praises the PBS LearningMedia platform, which offers readyto-use lesson plans, instructional videos and resource guides. Having a free account allows her to organize materials into folders by unit, streamlining her lesson-planning process. The ability to link these KET resources directly to Google Classroom allows her to make assignments and lesson plans easily accessible to students.

As an eighth-grade teacher, Hall recognizes the importance of preparing students for the transition to high school and beyond. “I have a lesson focused on career exploration, and I frequently use resources like Careers in Demand, Career Connections and Careers That Work," Hall explains. “These materials showcase real professionals and help students understand how the skills they develop in school can translate into fulfilling careers.”

Hall is also dedicated to empowering young women in science and technology. She founded Girls in STEM, a club designed to inspire and support female students interested in STEM careers.

“The mission of Girls in STEM is to provide knowledge, resources and

mentorship to help young women envision a future in STEM,” Hall says. “KET’s programs introduce them to inspiring role models and show them the wide range of opportunities available.”

Hall’s dedication to education inside and outside the classroom has not gone unnoticed. She was recently nominated for and selected as a 2025 KET All-Star, an honor recognizing outstanding educators who utilize KET’s resources to enhance their teaching and engage students in meaningful ways.

“The KET Education team’s unwavering dedication to learning and their support for educators is evident in everything they do,” Hall says. “Their passion for education shines through, and I am beyond thankful to be part of this incredible initiative!”

Looking ahead, Hall remains committed to fostering curiosity and a love for learning in her students. Whether she’s introducing them to career possibilities, guiding them through hands-on experiments or encouraging them to dream big in STEM, her work continues to reflect the very essence of what KET represents: education that inspires, empowers and transforms lives.

We appreciate the many of you who have reached out concerned about threats to federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS and are wondering what it means for KET.

Annual funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) makes possible the majority of KET’s local productions –approximately 790 hours last year. These include the Commonwealth’s only statewide nightly news, Kentucky Edition , and weekly series: Kentucky Tonight , Kentucky Life , Kentucky Health , Comment on Kentucky , Inside Louisville and The Farmer and The Foodie . CPB funding supports special programs such as The Story of Bluegrass Music , coverage of the annual political gathering at Fancy Farm, Severe Weather: Staying Safe , The Next Chapter , Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR), the opioid crisis, education, workforce and economic development, veterans’ issues, documentaries about significant Kentucky people, places, and events, and more including the upcoming history of Lexington. CPB grants also helped make possible the creation of KET’s highly effective GED® learning system and workforce-training resources.

The loss of federal funding will fundamentally change KET’s operations and substantially diminish our ability to produce local programs that so many depend on.

It’s important for members of Congress to hear from you about the value KET provides your family and all Kentuckians. Thank you for all the ways you support KET’s programs and services.

Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO Sincerely,

Hall
teacher, Daviess County
