Teen e-cigarette use has increasingly become an alarming trend in recent years, exposing youth to the dangerous health effects of nicotine. Tobacco Free Florida is here to help. Our Live Vape Free program empowers adults to become champions for teens looking to quit and arms teens with the tools and resources to help them throughout their quit journey.

HEALTH EFFECTS OF E-CIGARETTE USE Teen e-cigarette use is not safe, period. Nicotine is a dangerous and addictive drug.

The brain develops until about age 25 and is more vulnerable to nicotine’s effects, including reduced impulse control, attention and cognition, and mood disorders.

Using nicotine in your teen years may also increase risk for future addiction to other drugs and tobacco products.

E-cigarette aerosol is not water vapor, and can contain harmful substances like cancer-causing chemicals, propylene glycol, diacetyl, and heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead.

LIVE VAPE FREE PROGRAM For Adults

Live Vape Free provides adults with self-paced online courses, one-on-one coach support and downloadable toolkits to educate them on youth e-cigarette use and arm them with the tools needed to support teens on their quit journeys. Adults looking to learn more can visit TobaccoFreeFlorida.com/LiveVapeFree.

For Teens

Live Vape Free provides teens (ages 13-17) with text support, interactive content and one-on-one coach support to help them quit e-cigarettes. Upon enrollment, the text program conducts an assessment and makes teens set a quit date. To sign up, teens can text VAPEFREE to 873373.

Volunteers Make the Difference! The Escambia County Public Schools Office of Community Involvement gladly welcomes Volunteers, Mentors and Partners in Education onto our school campuses. Volunteer opportunities are provided for individuals to share their time, talents, and their life experiences with the students and teachers in our schools. School volunteers may assist at the schools of their choice and participate in activities that match their interests such as designing bulletin boards, working with art classes, helping out in the office, media center, or serving as a classroom assistant. The opportunities are endless! The ECPS Mentor Program matches caring adults from the community one-on-one with K-12 students who could benefit from a mentor’s help and encouragement. Mentors agree to donate one hour per week to meet with the same student for the duration of the school year, during school hours, at the school site. Mentors can choose the school, day and time that is most convenient for them. We highly value our mentors because the time they dedicate to our students is invaluable! ECPS recognizes the importance of partnerships with businesses, civic clubs, churches, the military and other community groups through its Partner in Education Program. Every partner’s contribution makes a difference! Whether it’s hands-on volunteering, in-kind donations, or financial contributions, it is used toward the specific purpose of enhancing education for the students of Escambia County. It’s easy to become involved as a Volunteer, Mentor or Partner in Education by contacting the ECPS Office of Community Involvement at 850-469-5675 or 850-469-5676. You may also visit our web page at escambiaschools.org.

Homeschool Education: Home education, as defined by Florida law, is “sequentially progressive instruction of a student directed by his or her parents in order to satisfy the attendance requirements of Sections 1002.41, 1003.01, and 1003.21.” Parents and/or guardians are responsible for all aspects of the student’s home education program. Parents who wish to provide instruction to their children at home are requested to review carefully, and comply with all state statutes and regulations governing the operation of a Home Education Program. In order to properly notify the Superintendent of Schools of their intent to establish a Home Education Program, parents are requested to send notification via mail or fax within 3 days of establishing a home education program. Magnet Schools: A Magnet School is a school with a particular academic focus such as science, technology, or the arts. A Magnet School with an attendance zone is a school that has a zone for which students are assigned to the school, and therefore do not need to make an application. Escambia County has 3 magnet schools and one “School Within A School”. Charter Schools: There are 5 charter schools in Escambia County Public Schools. Those are non-regulated public schools administered by an independent agency which operates under the auspices of the School Board. Charter schools may serve students in grades K-12.

Pre-K Education: The mission of Escambia County Public Schools Title I Pre-K is to provide a positive, high quality, environment to increase school readiness and build a foundation for future success. All Pre-K educators will use developmentally appropriate practices in order to create experiences for students that are language-rich, engaging, intentional, and motivating while integrating 21st century technology. Transportation: The Escambia County Public Schools Transportation Department transports over 24,000 students in more than 260 school buses each and every school day. It is one of the largest student transportation operations in the United States. The responsibility which guides that effort is immense, but our staff of 480 employees will not budge an inch without an abiding commitment to do so safely, dependably, and efficiently. That is our commitment to the students we transport and their parents, the public, and our schools. Workforce/Career Education: Escambia County Public Schools career academies are small learning communities within middle or high schools which focus on a career pathway for a two-, three-, or four-year span. Students enter through a voluntary application process; they must apply and be accepted, with parental knowledge and support. Students in a career academy take a mixture of career (usually one or two) and academic (usually three or four) classes each school year. Classes meet entrance requirements for four-year universities. Students develop knowledge in a given industry, and—in most academies—students have opportunities to earn industry certification relevant to the career academy. Students’ senior year may include work experience, paid or unpaid, within the community.

Handwashing: Keeping Your Family Healthy Handwashing is an easy, cheap, and effective way to prevent the spread of germs and keep kids and adults healthy. When your family is healthy, you don’t have to worry about missing school, work, or other activities.

Help your child develop handwashing skills Parents and caretakers play an important role in teaching children to wash their hands. Handwashing can become a lifelong healthy habit if you start teaching it at an early age. Teach kids the five easy steps for handwashing—wet, lather, scrub, rinse, and dry—and the key times to wash hands, such as after using the bathroom or before eating. You can find ways to make it fun, like making up your own handwashing song or turning it into a game.

Lead by example Young children learn by imitating the behaviors of adults in their lives. When you make handwashing part of your routine, you’re setting an example for your children to follow.

Handwashing can prevent

Give frequent reminders

cases of diarrhea

Building handwashing skills takes time. At first, your child will need regular reminders of how and when to wash hands. It is especially important to remind children to wash their hands after using the bathroom, before eating, after touching pets, after playing outside, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose. But once handwashing becomes a habit and a regular part of your child’s day, they will practice it throughout their lives.

What if soap and water aren’t available?

respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol.

Did you know? Baby wipes may make your hands look clean, but they’re not designed to remove germs from your hands. CDC recommends washing hands with soap and water when possible.

Remember to make handwashing a healthy habit at home, school, and at play! HELPFUL TIPS AND TRICKS www.EscambiaChildrensTrust.org | Facebook: facebook.com/EscaChildrensTrust

Home Safety Tips Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe in your home.

Every parent wants their children to grow up healthy and strong in the place where they deserve to feel safest: at home. The good news is that there are simple and easy steps that families can take to protect their children.

Preventing Falls

Poison Prevention

• Use approved safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs and attach them to the wall, if possible. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you have the right gate for your needs. Not all gates are safe for use at the top of stairs.

• Store all household products and cleaning solutions out of children’s sight and reach. Young kids are often eyelevel with items under the kitchen and bathroom sinks. • Keep cleaning products in their original containers. Don’t put a potentially poisonous product in something other than its original container (such as a plastic soda bottle) where it could be mistaken for something else.

• Keep babies and young kids strapped in when using high chairs, swings or strollers. When placing your baby into a carrier, remember to place the carrier on the floor, not on top of tables or other furniture. • Properly install window guards and stops to prevent window falls. Windows above the first floor should have an emergency release device in case of fire.

Water Safety

• Put the toll-free Poison Help Number into your phone in case of emergency: 1-800-222-1222.

Safety from Fire • For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test batteries every six months. • Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. In the event of a fire, leave your home immediately. Once you’re out of the house, stay out.

• Actively supervise children in and around water. Avoid distractions of any kind, such as reading or talking on the phone. • Once bath time is over, immediately drain the tub. Keep toilet lids closed and keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed to prevent drowning.

• Keep anything that can catch fire, such as dish towels or wooden spoons, away from your stovetop. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and make sure you know how it works. • Blow candles out when you leave the room or before you go to sleep.

• Make sure home pools have four-sided fencing that’s at least 4 feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent a child from wandering into the pool area unsupervised. • Every child is different, so enroll children in swimming lessons when you feel they are ready. Teach young children from an early age not to go near or in water without an adult. Older children should swim with a partner, every time.

For advertising information, please email info@EscambiaChildrensTrust.org

Every year, more than 2,200 children die from injuries that happen at home.

Preventing Burns

Medication Safety

• Don’t carry a child while cooking on the stove. It’s better to put your child in a high chair where you can still see them.

• Put all medicine and vitamins up and away and out of sight after every use.

• Keep an eye on appliances such as irons, curling irons or hair dryers that can heat up quickly or stay warm. Unplug and safely store these items after use. • Keep appliance cords out of children’s reach, especially if the appliances produce a lot of heat.

• Use the dosing device that comes with the medicine, not a kitchen spoon. Kitchen spoons aren’t all the same, and a teaspoon or tablespoon used for cooking won’t measure the same amount as the dosing device.

Preventing Scalds

Preventing TV and Furniture Tip-overs

• To prevent accidental scalding, set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or the manufacturer’s recommended setting. Check the water with your wrist or elbow before giving your baby a bath.

• Mount flat-panel TVs to the wall to prevent them from falling off stands. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that you have a secure fit.

• To prevent hot food or liquid spills, use the back burner of your stove and turn pot handles away from the edge. Keep hot foods and liquids away from the edge of your counters and tables.

Safety from Carbon Monoxide

• Use brackets, braces or wall straps to secure unstable or top-heavy furniture to the wall. • If you have a large, box-style cathode ray tube (CRT) TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture. If you no longer use your CRT TV, consider recycling it. To find a recycle location, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org.

Sleep Safety

• Make sure your home has a carbon monoxide alarm. For the best protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. • Don’t use a grill, generator or camping stove inside your home, garage or near a window. Don’t use your oven or stovetop to heat your home. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting. Don’t leave a car, SUV or motorcycle engine running inside a garage, even if the doors are open.

• Make sure babies sleep on their backs and in their own crib, bassinet or play yard. Room sharing is a safer option than having your baby sleep in bed with you. • Choose a firm mattress covered with a tight-fitting crib sheet for your baby’s crib. Avoid using soft bedding, pillows, stuffed animals and bumpers in the crib.

A Tip Sheet for Parents:

MENTAL HEALTH, SUICIDE PREVENTION AND FIREARM SAFETY

This three-part resource will help you: 1) Know what behaviors to watch for in your teenagers that could point to suicide or self-harm risk; 2) Identify the steps to take if you are concerned about your child; and 3) Learn home safety steps to prevent unauthorized access to firearms or access to firearms by a person at risk for suicide.

WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH Suicide most often occurs when several stressors or health issues converge to create a feeling of hopelessness or despair. Watch for the following signs and behaviors in your teen: Talks about killing themselves, feeling hopeless or having no reason to live. Expresses being a burden to others, feeling trapped or experiencing unbearable pain. Appears depressed, anxious, disinterested, irritable, humiliated or agitated, or suddenly appears to have rapidly improved after previously displaying those moods. Increases use of alcohol or drugs. Withdraws from activities and isolates from friends and family. Reduces effort at school, stops trying academically or increases absences. Exhibits changes in sleeping or eating patterns; is always fatigued or not sleeping. Conducts internet searches for materials/ways for self-harm. Says goodbye to family or friends; gives possessions away. Displays aggressive behaviors. Makes unusual or cryptic social media posts related to the above (being a burden, saying goodbye, etc.).

OUTREACH STEPS TO TAKE Don’t wait — trust your gut. If you notice changes in your teen’s normal behavior, such as becoming more withdrawn, disconnecting from friends, or grades dropping, or they’re just not being themselves, that’s a time to connect and talk with them about their feelings and mental health and consider reaching out to a healthcare professional. Talking about mental health or suicide does not increase risk of suicide. Ask your teen specifically about suicide and suicidal thoughts. Here’s how: “Sometimes when people are feeling overwhelmed, they may have thoughts of suicide. Have you had those kinds of thoughts?” If your teen indicates suicidal thoughts or you are left feeling uneasy, reach out to a healthcare professional for further assessment. Hold all discussions in a nonjudgmental, empathetic manner. Listening and conveying that you are here to help is more important than giving advice. Stay in regular touch with teachers and coaches, as well as your teen’s friends and teammates. Follow up regularly and express your care and concern. If you don’t see any improvements or your child continues to struggle, seek help from a healthcare professional. Contact a healthcare professional. While a mental health professional is ideal, you can also turn to your child’s primary care physician or even a walk-in clinic, urgent care center or your local emergency room if you are concerned about your child’s safety.

SAFETY STEPS TO TAKE While safe firearm storage is always important, it’s imperative when you are worried about the mental health of a loved one. Decide which safe firearm storage option makes the most sense for your family.

A cable lock to prevent a gun from being loaded and fired

A gun case with an external lock

A lock box featuring a passcode or biometric access

A full-size gun safe that fits multiple firearms

Additional Safe Storage Guidelines: Firearms should be stored locked and unloaded when not in use. Read your firearm’s manual and know how to safely remove any ammunition from the firearm and its magazine. When possible and where permitted by law, consider storing firearms offsite or away from the home so they are not accessible to the person at risk. Store firearms disassembled and when possible store ammunition separately. If using a key lock, keep the keys on your person or inaccessible to the person at risk. Always unload and securely store your firearms immediately after returning from a hunting trip or a day at the range. A gun lock should be used as an additional safety precaution and not as a substitute for secure storage. Educate everyone in your family about firearm safety and preventing unauthorized access.

Medicines, alcohol, chemicals and knives can also be used to harm oneself. Consider the following steps: Secure medicine or chemical storage cabinets with a lock, or consider a medicine lock box. Remove medicines, chemicals and alcohol from the home as appropriate. Keep keys inaccessible to the person at risk. Ensure all family members with access take serious precautions to re-secure items after use.

Tips for Survivors: COPING WITH GRIEF AFTER COMMUNITY VIOLENCE It is not uncommon for individuals and communities as a whole to experience grief reactions and anger after an incident of community violence. Grief is the normal response of sorrow, emotion, and confusion that comes from losing someone or something important to you. Most people will experience a natural occurrence of grief after the death of a loved one, but grief and anger can be the result of other types of losses. In situations of community violence, people may experience the loss of their sense of safety, their trust in those who live in their neighborhood, or their trust in local government. The trauma and grief of community violence can be experienced by all involved. This tip sheet contains information about some of the signs of grief and anger and provides useful information about how to cope with grief. In addition, the Helpful Resources section provides hotline numbers and treatment locators for those who may want further help.

Grief Reactions to Violence Often after a death or loss of some kind, many people express feeling empty and numb, or unable to feel. Some people complain that they become angry at others or at situations, or they just feel angry in general, even without a reason. Some of the physical reactions to grief and anger may include the following:

year. It’s different for each person depending on his or her health, coping styles, culture, family supports, and other life experiences. How long people grieve may also depend on the resilience of the community and the ability of its members to take on roles and responsibilities that will help restore the basic needs of the community, such as getting children back to school and businesses back to working again.

Reactions to Community Violence in Children Witnessing community violence and death can be traumatic experiences that cause negative mental health outcomes, particularly for children. Close relationships are important to children’s development, and the loss of family or a community member can represent the loss of social capital—the emotional support that enhances their well-being. Children may experience depression, posttraumatic stress, anxiety, aggression, poor academic achievement, hopelessness, and risky behavior. These losses can even affect their capacity for relationships and diminish future expectations.

Tips for Helping Children Cope With Grief n

Allow children to talk about their feelings and to express their grief (e.g., crying, being sad).

n

Try to follow the same routines as usual.

n

Encourage them to play and laugh. Limit exposure to violence on TV news. Encourage them to get adequate rest and to eat healthy meals.

n

Trembling or shakiness

n

n

Muscle weakness

n

n

Nausea, trouble eating

n

Trouble sleeping, trouble breathing

n

Dry mouth

People experiencing grief may have nightmares, withdraw socially, and may have no desire to participate in their usual activities, work, or school.

How Long Do Grief Reactions Last? Grief lasts as long as it takes you to accept and learn to live with the changes that have occurred in your community due to the violence and its aftermath. For some people, grief lasts a few months; for others, it may take more than a

What Can Communities Do To Cope With Their Grief? Often the community needs to come together to honor those who died and find meaning in their deaths in a way that will help everyone in the community recover. People may create a memorial and decide together that this will remind them never to allow such violence in their community again. It may help them be determined to work out their differences in other ways in the future—for example, by forming a community advisory group or identifying a local leader to be their liaison with law enforcement and other government entities.

TIPS FOR COPING WITH GRIEF AFTER COMMUNITY VIOLENCE

What Can Individuals Do To Cope With Their Grief?

Helpful Resources

Talking to others who understand and respect how you feel— family members, faith leaders, people you trust—is a helpful way to ease your grief. Recognize that although you might still have these feelings over a long period, they will likely be less and less intense over time. Make sure to exercise and eat healthy meals. Do the things that you used to enjoy doing, even if you don’t always feel like it. This will help you get back into your routines. Allow yourself to feel joy at times and to cry when you need to.

Emergencies can happen at any time. Does your family know how to get in touch with each other if you are not all together? Before an emergency happens, have a family discussion to determine who would be your out-of-state point of contact, and where you would meet away from your home — both in the neighborhood and within your town.

you’re OK!

Pick the same person for each family member to contact. It might be easier to reach someone who’s out of town.

Concerned about Development?

How to Get Help for Your Child Talking to the doctor is the first step toward getting help for your child if you are concerned about his or her development (how your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, or moves). Don’t wait. Acting early can make a real difference!

1

Make an appointment with your child’s doctor n

2

When you schedule the appointment, tell the doctor’s staff you have concerns about your child’s development that you would like to discuss with the doctor. Complete a milestone checklist

n

n

3

Before the appointment, complete a milestone checklist by downloading CDC’s free Milestone Tracker mobile app from the App Store or Google Play or printing a paper checklist from www.cdc.gov/Milestones Write down your questions and concerns; take these with you to the doctor’s appointment. During the doctor’s appointment

n

n

n

4

Show the completed milestone checklist to the doctor > If your child is missing milestones, point them out, and share any other concerns that you have. > If your child is not missing milestones but you still have concerns, tell the doctor about them. Ask the doctor for developmental screening for your child > Developmental screening is recommended whenever there is a concern. It gives the doctor more information to figure out how best to help your child. > For more information about developmental screening, go to www.cdc.gov/DevScreening. Ask the doctor if your child needs further developmental evaluation > If your child does, ask for a referral and call right away. If you have difficulty getting an appointment, let the doctor know.

You Know Your Child Best If your child’s doctor has told you to “wait and see,” but you feel uneasy about that advice:

Talk with another doctor to get a second opinion

AND

Call for a free evaluation to find out if your child can get free or low-cost services that can help. n If your child is under age 3: Call your state’s early intervention program. Find the phone number at www.cdc.gov/FindEI. n If your child is age 3 or older: Call the local public elementary school.

You do not need a doctor’s referral to have your child evaluated for services. Find more information, including what to say when you make these important calls, visit www.cdc.gov/Concerned.

Make sure you understand what the doctor tells you, and what to do next n

n

n

Before you leave the appointment, check the notes you have written and make sure all of your questions have been answered. If you do not understand something, ask the doctor to explain it again or in a different way. When you get home, review your notes and follow the steps the doctor has given you. Remember, you can always contact the doctor’s office if you have any questions.

Don’t wait. Acting early can make a real difference!

¿Le preocupa el desarrollo de su hijo?

Cómo ayudar a su hijo Si le preocupa el desarrollo de su hijo (la forma en que juega, aprende, habla, actúa o se mueve), el primer paso para darle ayuda es hablar con el médico. No espere. ¡Reaccionar pronto puede marcar una gran diferencia!

1

No espere. ¡ Reaccionar pronto puede marcar una gran diferencia!
