In December 2018, Marlboro cigarette maker Altria purchased a stake in JUUL for $12.8 billion. Other Big Tobacco companies, including R.J. Reynolds, have launched similar rechargeable e-cigarette devices.
In 2006, these tobacco companies were found guilty of violating civil racketeering laws (RICO) for conspiring over decades to deceive Americans about nicotine, and their marketing to youth.
Cancercausing chemicals
Nicotine is highly addictive, and youth may feel dependent on nicotine sooner compared to adults
Nicotine
Heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead particles
Nicotine can harm brain development, which continues until about age 25. The effects include reduced impulse control, deficits in attention and cognition, and mood disorders

Toy Safety Tips
Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe around toys.
Toys and games are tons of fun for kids and adults. Whether your kids are working on a puzzle, playing with building blocks or even inventing their own games, here are a few things to think about to help them stay safer and have a blast.
Find the Perfect Toy for the Right Age
• Consider your child’s age and development when purchasing a toy or game. Read the instructions and warning labels to make sure it’s just right for your child.
• Before you’ve settled on the perfect toy, check to make sure there aren’t any small parts or other potential choking hazards.
Don’t Forget a Helmet for Riding Toys
• If your children have their hearts set on a new bike, skateboard, scooter or other riding equipment, be sure to include a CPSC certified helmet to keep them safe while they’re having fun.
• Learn more bike safety tips and watch our helmet safety video.
Store Toys After Play
• After play time is over, use a bin or container to store toys for next time. Make sure there are no holes or hinges that could catch little fingers.
Sign Up to Receive Product Recalls
• Safe Kids compiles product recalls specific to children and sends twice-monthly e-mail alerts for recent recalls. Sign-up for the latest recall information
• Go to www.recalls.gov for additional information about product recalls related to kids.
In 2016, 174,100 children under the age of 15 years were seen in emergency rooms for toy-related injuries. That’s 477 kids every day. Almost half of those children were younger than 5 years of age.

Handwashing at Home, at Play, and Out and About
Germs are everywhere! They can get onto your hands and items you touch throughout the day. Washing hands at key times with soap and water is one of the most important steps you can take to get rid of germs and avoid spreading germs to those around you.
How can washing your hands keep you healthy?
Germs can get into the body through our eyes, nose, and mouth and make us sick. Handwashing with soap removes germs from hands and helps prevent sickness. Studies have shown that handwashing can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhea-related sicknesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.
Handwashing helps prevent infections for these reasons:
People often touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without realizing it, introducing germs into their bodies.
Germs from unwashed hands may get into foods and drinks when people prepare or consume them. Germs can grow in some types of foods or drinks and make people sick.
Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, such as door knobs, tables, or toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands.
What is the right way to wash your hands?
1. Wet your hands with clean running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap.
3. Scrub all surfaces of your hands, including the palms, backs, fingers, between your fingers, and under your nails. Keep scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice.
4. Rinse your hands under clean, running water.
5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
46 For advertising information, please email info@EscambiaChildrensTrust.org HELPFUL TIPS AND TRICKS CS 280522A
When should you wash your hands?
Handwashing at any time of the day can help get rid of germs, but there are key times when it’s most important to wash your hands.
• Before, during, and after preparing food
• Before eating food
• Before and after caring for someone who is sick
• Before and after treating a cut or wound
• After using the bathroom, changing diapers, or cleaning up a child who has used the bathroom
• After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
• After touching an animal, animal food or treats, animal cages, or animal feces (poop)
• After touching garbage
• If your hands are visibly dirty or greasy
What type of soap should you use?
You can use bar soap or liquid soap to wash your hands. Many public places provide liquid soap because it’s easier and cleaner to share with others. Studies have not found any added health benefit from using soaps containing antibacterial ingredients when compared with plain soap. Both are equally effective in getting rid of germs. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
How does handwashing help fight antibiotic resistance?
Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria resist the effects of an antibiotic – that is, germs are not killed and they continue to grow. Sicknesses caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be harder to treat. Simply using antibiotics creates resistance, so avoiding infections in the first place reduces the amount of antibiotics that have to be used and reduces the likelihood that resistance will develop during treatment. Handwashing helps prevent many sicknesses, meaning less use of antibiotics.
Studies have shown that handwashing can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhea-related sicknesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.

Home Safety Tips
Everything you need to know to keep your kids safe in your home.
Every parent wants their children to grow up healthy and strong in the place where they deserve to feel safest: at home. The good news is that there are simple and easy steps that families can take to protect their children.
Preventing Falls
• Use approved safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs and attach them to the wall, if possible. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure you have the right gate for your needs. Not all gates are safe for use at the top of stairs.
• Keep babies and young kids strapped in when using high chairs, swings or strollers. When placing your baby into a carrier, remember to place the carrier on the floor, not on top of tables or other furniture.
• Properly install window guards and stops to prevent window falls. Windows above the first floor should have an emergency release device in case of fire.
Water Safety
• Actively supervise children in and around water. Avoid distractions of any kind, such as reading or talking on the phone.
• Once bath time is over, immediately drain the tub. Keep toilet lids closed and keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed to prevent drowning.
• Make sure home pools have four-sided fencing that’s at least 4 feet high with self-closing, self-latching gates to prevent a child from wandering into the pool area unsupervised.
• Every child is different, so enroll children in swimming lessons when you feel they are ready. Teach young children from an early age not to go near or in water without an adult. Older children should swim with a partner, every time.
Poison Prevention
• Store all household products and cleaning solutions out of children’s sight and reach. Young kids are often eyelevel with items under the kitchen and bathroom sinks.
• Keep cleaning products in their original containers. Don’t put a potentially poisonous product in something other than its original container (such as a plastic soda bottle) where it could be mistaken for something else.
• Put the toll-free Poison Help Number into your phone in case of emergency: 1-800-222-1222.
Safety from Fire
• For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. Test batteries every six months.
• Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. In the event of a fire, leave your home immediately. Once you’re out of the house, stay out.
• Keep anything that can catch fire, such as dish towels or wooden spoons, away from your stovetop. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and make sure you know how it works.
• Blow candles out when you leave the room or before you go to sleep.
Every year, more than 2,200 children die from injuries that happen at home.

Preventing Burns
• Don’t carry a child while cooking on the stove. It’s better to put your child in a high chair where you can still see them.
• Keep an eye on appliances such as irons, curling irons or hair dryers that can heat up quickly or stay warm. Unplug and safely store these items after use.
• Keep appliance cords out of children’s reach, especially if the appliances produce a lot of heat.
Preventing Scalds
• To prevent accidental scalding, set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or the manufacturer’s recommended setting. Check the water with your wrist or elbow before giving your baby a bath.
• To prevent hot food or liquid spills, use the back burner of your stove and turn pot handles away from the edge. Keep hot foods and liquids away from the edge of your counters and tables.
Safety from Carbon Monoxide
• Make sure your home has a carbon monoxide alarm. For the best protection, install a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
• Don’t use a grill, generator or camping stove inside your home, garage or near a window. Don’t use your oven or stovetop to heat your home.
• If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting. Don’t leave a car, SUV or motorcycle engine running inside a garage, even if the doors are open.
Medication Safety
• Put all medicine and vitamins up and away and out of sight after every use.
• Use the dosing device that comes with the medicine, not a kitchen spoon. Kitchen spoons aren’t all the same, and a teaspoon or tablespoon used for cooking won’t measure the same amount as the dosing device.
Preventing TV and Furniture Tip-overs
• Mount flat-panel TVs to the wall to prevent them from falling off stands. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that you have a secure fit.
• Use brackets, braces or wall straps to secure unstable or top-heavy furniture to the wall.
• If you have a large, box-style cathode ray tube (CRT) TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture. If you no longer use your CRT TV, consider recycling it. To find a recycle location, go to www.GreenerGadgets.org.
Sleep Safety
• Make sure babies sleep on their backs and in their own crib, bassinet or play yard. Room sharing is a safer option than having your baby sleep in bed with you.
• Choose a firm mattress covered with a tight-fitting crib sheet for your baby’s crib. Avoid using soft bedding, pillows, stuffed animals and bumpers in the crib.

Family Communication Plan
Emergencies can happen at any time. Does your family know how to get in touch with each other if you are not all together?
Before an emergency happens, have a family discussion to determine who would be your out-of-state point of contact, and where you would meet away from your home — both in the neighborhood and within your town.
Let them know you’re OK!
Pick the same person for each family member to contact. It might be easier to reach someone who’s out of town.

Tips for Survivors: COPING WITH GRIEF AFTER COMMUNITY VIOLENCE
It is not uncommon for individuals and communities as a whole to experience grief reactions and anger after an incident of community violence. Grief is the normal response of sorrow, emotion, and confusion that comes from losing someone or something important to you. Most people will experience a natural occurrence of grief after the death of a loved one, but grief and anger can be the result of other types of losses. In situations of community violence, people may experience the loss of their sense of safety, their trust in those who live in their neighborhood, or their trust in local government. The trauma and grief of community violence can be experienced by all involved.
This tip sheet contains information about some of the signs of grief and anger and provides useful information about how to cope with grief. In addition, the Helpful Resources section provides hotline numbers and treatment locators for those who may want further help.
Grief Reactions to Violence
Often after a death or loss of some kind, many people express feeling empty and numb, or unable to feel. Some people complain that they become angry at others or at situations, or they just feel angry in general, even without a reason. Some of the physical reactions to grief and anger may include the following:
n Trembling or shakiness
n Muscle weakness
n Nausea, trouble eating
n Trouble sleeping, trouble breathing
n Dry mouth
People experiencing grief may have nightmares, withdraw socially, and may have no desire to participate in their usual activities, work, or school.
How Long Do Grief Reactions Last?
Grief lasts as long as it takes you to accept and learn to live with the changes that have occurred in your community due to the violence and its aftermath. For some people, grief lasts a few months; for others, it may take more than a
year. It’s different for each person depending on his or her health, coping styles, culture, family supports, and other life experiences. How long people grieve may also depend on the resilience of the community and the ability of its members to take on roles and responsibilities that will help restore the basic needs of the community, such as getting children back to school and businesses back to working again.
Reactions to Community Violence in Children
Witnessing community violence and death can be traumatic experiences that cause negative mental health outcomes, particularly for children. Close relationships are important to children’s development, and the loss of family or a community member can represent the loss of social capital—the emotional support that enhances their well-being. Children may experience depression, posttraumatic stress, anxiety, aggression, poor academic achievement, hopelessness, and risky behavior. These losses can even affect their capacity for relationships and diminish future expectations.
Tips for Helping Children Cope With Grief
n Allow children to talk about their feelings and to express their grief (e.g., crying, being sad).
n Try to follow the same routines as usual.
n Encourage them to play and laugh.
n Limit exposure to violence on TV news.
n Encourage them to get adequate rest and to eat healthy meals.
What Can Communities Do To Cope With Their Grief?
Often the community needs to come together to honor those who died and find meaning in their deaths in a way that will help everyone in the community recover. People may create a memorial and decide together that this will remind them never to allow such violence in their community again. It may help them be determined to work out their differences in other ways in the future—for example, by forming a community advisory group or identifying a local leader to be their liaison with law enforcement and other government entities.

What Can Individuals Do To Cope With Their Grief?
Talking to others who understand and respect how you feel— family members, faith leaders, people you trust—is a helpful way to ease your grief. Recognize that although you might still have these feelings over a long period, they will likely be less and less intense over time. Make sure to exercise and eat healthy meals. Do the things that you used to enjoy doing, even if you don’t always feel like it. This will help you get back into your routines. Allow yourself to feel joy at times and to cry when you need to.
Even though they may be experiencing grief, some individuals also exhibit positive changes from their experience of loss, such as the following:
n Becoming more understanding and tolerant
n Having increased appreciation for relationships and loved ones
n Being grateful for what they have and for those in their community who are loving and caring
n Experiencing enhanced spiritual connection
n Becoming more socially active
If you have experienced the death of a friend or loved one—or if you have been exposed to community violence—feelings of grief and anger are a normal reaction. But, if these feelings persist, access the resources on this page for more information on getting help.
If you or someone you know is struggling after a disaster, you are not alone.

Quitting smoking is possible with free and proven cessation tools.
Tobacco Free Florida can help.
