Fur ther Education and Training (FE T ) Courses and Apprenticeships provide excellent routes to direct employment and/or fur ther study. In establishing Kerr y College of Fur ther Education and Training (Kerr y College), a key aim was to simplify the steps in accessing information for learners interested in pursuing a FE T course or an apprenticeship.

Kerr y College is committed to our learners and has a successful track record of educating and learning, allowing us to prepare our learners for employment, fur ther study or progression to Higher Education Institutes At Kerr y College, we also deliver high-level apprenticeship training in house In November 2022, we launched our Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship, which is the only one of its k ind running in Ireland.

We have over 180 full and par t time fur ther education and training programmes, which are aligned to Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 on the National Qualifications Framework. All full-time courses are free of charge for ever yone! Our courses are developed with the intention of providing our learners with the sk ills and qualifications needed to flourish, to work at home, and to work abroad.

As a Kerr y College learner or apprentice, you will have access to great facilities, which are ever evolving, passionate instructors and teachers, and the oppor tunity to link with employers on our industr y placement programmes. This year we opened a second Admissions O ffice in 25 High Street, Killarney that will provide help and assistance navigating Fur ther Education and Training in the East Kerr y region We also opened our new Listowel Campus in the Cliveragh Business Park, Listowel This new campus will provide full and par t-time programmes for learners in the wider Nor th Kerr y region.

Our Business Suppor t Unit offers a suite of shor t, flexible programmes primarily through the National Sk ills to Advance initiative. These training programmes are delivered free of charge or are heavily subsidised. This initiative helps employers to identify desirable sk ills and invest in their workforce Our par t- time programmes are a great way to explore a new field of learning, upsk ill or resk ill, with a wide variety of courses to choose from.

2021 was the first time ever, school leavers and CAO applicants were able to apply for Fur ther Education and Training courses and explore Apprenticeship oppor tunities alongside Higher Education options on the CAO website.

Honours degrees, ordinar y degrees, diplomas and higher cer tificates

Full-time accredited programmes, including Post leaving Cer tificate courses (PlCs), that include a substantial work experience component. Many of which offer an access route to fur ther third-level studies.

Apprenticeship is an accredited programme of struc tured education and training which formally combines and alternates learning in the workplace with learning in an education or training centre.

You can apply for higher education courses via CAO by click ing on ‘Apply ’ and following the instructions in the CAO Handbook and the CAO application form.

The CAO website now links to information and applications for Fur ther Education and Training (FE T ) programmes and Apprenticeships. Minimum Entry requirements

AGE

All applicants must have reached the current statutor y school leaving age (16+) by course star t date. A completed and signed Parental/ Guardian Consent Form must be completed by applicants under the age of 18. This form is available in the Learner Information section of our website.

MINIMUM EdUCATION

For some craft apprenticeships, some employment focused courses or some pathway courses, a minimum of three years post-primar y education or Junior Cer tificate is essential. Increasingly, a Leaving Cer tificate is required. For all courses for progression at QQI Level 5, you must have completed your Leaving Cer t, LCVP, LCA or have a recent QQI Level 4 Major Award.

MATURE APPLICANTS

A mature applicant route is available for those who don’t meet the minimum educational requirements. To qualify, you must be aged 23 or over on Januar y 1st of the year the course star ts.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

English language proficienc y is required for all courses For non–native English speakers, we consider CEFR B2 as the minimum standard for QQI Level 5 and Level 6 courses Kerr y College require CEFR B1 for Level 4 course and CEFR A2 for Level 3 courses Please contact our Admissions O ffice if you feel you need English language suppor ts or need to be assessed.

Payment of Fee

Funding & Financial Supports

Learners on full-time programmes at Kerr y College have a number of funding options.

1. DEASP (Depar tment of Employment and Social Protec tion). Contac t your local INTREO office.

2. SUSI (Student Universal Suppor t Ireland). Apply at: w w w.susi.ie

if eligible, learners may only receive one of these payments while par ticipating on a Kerr y College full-time programme.

Learner Allowance

Also k nown as a Training Allowance.

To avail of a Learner Allowance, an applicant must be in receipt of a qualifying DEASP payment at course star t date

Allowances/payments are based on attendance and are paid by Kerr y College directly to learners for the duration of the course. You may also receive accommodation or travel allowance if you meet the criteria.

back to Education Allowance

To avail of a Back to Education Allowance (BTEA) the applicant must apply directly to the DEASP.

BTEA is paid by DEASP directly to learners for the academic year There is no option to receive any other payment or receive an accommodation or travel allowance.

SUSI Grant

SUSI is a maintenance grant available only for courses that are SUSI approved Payments are made directly to the learner in the form of grants to cover the academic year. There is no option to receive any other payment or receive an accommodation or travel allowance. A full-list of eligible courses along with details on how to apply is available on SUSI.ie.

No Payment

A learner who is not eligible for Learner Payment, BTEA or SUSI may still apply and par ticipate on any Kerr y College course

Funding towards Travel, Accommodation and Meals

At present, learners on courses for progression do not qualify for travel/accommodation/meal payments These payments relate only to learners on courses for employment.

Learners may receive Travel or Accommodation Allowance - but not both. Your payment will be calculated and processed at course registration.

Travel Allowance

A travel allowance is a contribution towards the learner ’s cost of travel based on the distance from the learner ’s primar y place of residence to the campus location

To qualify, learners must live more than 3 miles/5k m away from the campus location they are attending.

Travel Allowances are not payable to par ticipants on Night Training courses.

Accommodation Allowance

An accommodation allowance may be paid to learners who need to relocate in order to attend a course.

To qualify, a learner's primar y residence must be 20 miles/32k m away from the campus location they are attending.

Electricians install, commission, test and maintain various wiring systems and ser vices in domestic, commercial and industrial settings

Work ranges from wiring domestic houses and retail units to more complex systems involving process control and maintenance in industrial plants, hospitals and power stations

They also ser vice, maintain and repair domestic and industrial electrical equipment. In addition, electricians employed by the Electricity Supply Board (ESB) engage in electrical power supply and distribution.

Electricians employed by electrical contractors are usually engaged in installing lighting, heating and power equipment and repairing existing equipment and appliances

Those in industrial employment are generally engaged in the maintenance and repair of factor y plant, machiner y and generating equipment

The work includes central heating systems and their controls, pipework, sanitar y systems, drainage systems, guttering and rainwater systems Maintenance and repair work includes routine ser vicing and emergenc y repairs, tests, and ensuring the system works properly

Plumbers work on such technologies as gas-fired and oil-fired heating systems, under-floor heating, solar, geothermal and biomass heating. Plumbers work in various locations, including houses, industrial and commercial buildings.

The craft of Stonecutting and Stonemasonr y is diverse in its activities and encompasses both traditional sk ills and current technologies

This craft offers many individual oppor tunities to pursue a fulfilling and rewarding technical and creative stonework ing career The sectors of the stone industr y specific to the craft of Stonecutting and Stonemasonr y include the construction, architectural, monumental and heritage sectors

The Stonecutter and Stonemason cuts, shapes, car ves, fabricates and constructs with a wide variety of stone types, using hand tools, power tools and stone work ing machiner y.

These sk ills are suppor ted by drawing and related k nowledge. They are used to produce a wide range of stone features and products and ser vices, including architectural features and details, headstones and memorials, fireplaces, vanity units, counter tops, decorative car ving and letter car ving, architectural cladding, church interiors including sanctuar y furniture, stonewall construction and masonr y, hard landscaping and street furniture, conser vation procedures and inter ventions.

The Carpenter and Joiner cuts, shapes, and joins wood and wood based products using a wide range of hand tools, e.g., hammer, saw, planes and chisels.

They also use power tools and machines. Carpenters and Joiners use their sk ills to set out and construct roofs, install floors, stairs and windows, built-in furniture and hang doors. They also manufacture doors, windows, stairs and shopfronts.

The Carpenter and Joiner has to study drawings, per form craft calculations and select materials to meet design requirements. Site work includes the construction of buildings and houses which require first and second fixing, including roofing. The place of work may var y, depending on the type of work done could be on site, in a workshop or in a private dwelling

MEcHAnIcAL AuTOMOTIvE MAInTEnAncE FITTEr (MAMF)

The work of the Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitter involves:

• Plant and machiner y installation.

• Maintenance and repair

• Replacement of broken or worn par ts.

• Adjustment and ser vicing

The work also involves the fabrication of replacement par ts using machine tools, i.e. lathes, milling machines and grinders In addition, components may have to be repaired or fabricated using welding, brazing, riveting and soldering techniques

Increasingly machines and processes involve the integration of computer, electronic and programmable control systems with mechanical/ hydraulic, pneumatic systems, e.g. PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), CNC (Computer Numerical Control), Robots and CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing).

METAL FABrIcATIOn

The Metal Fabricator ’s work involves the installation and manufacture of a range of metallic systems to include pressure vessels, tank and boiler manufacture, structural steel systems, plate steel systems and piping systems.

Metal fabricators can shape steel components with the aid of thermal cutting equipment and a range of machiner y used in bending, folding and cutting metal plate and pipe components.

Thermal processes such as MMA (Manual Metal Arc) welding, TIG/TAG ( Tungsten Iner t Gas and Tungsten Active Gas) welding MIG/MAG (Metal Iner t Gas and Metal Active Gas welding and ox y acetylene welding and brazing are sk ills used by the metal fabricator.

MOTOr MEcHAnIcS

A Motor Mechanic is a sk illed technician who ser vices, diagnoses and resolves technical concerns with light passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

The work of a Motor Mechanic includes:

• Carr ying out the routine ser vice procedures as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

• Examining and preparing the vehicle for the National Car Test (NC T ) or the Commercial Vehicle Road Wor thiness Test (CVRT ).

• Diagnosing and resolving problems with the operation of the mechanical and electrical systems of vehicles and carr ying out all work in accordance with manufacturer ’s recommended procedures.

This Wind Turbine Maintenance Technician ( W TMT ) Apprenticeship is for those who wish to pursue a career in the maintenance of large -scale commercial wind turbines.
