UNIQUE TO KERRY COLLEGE

OVERVIEW RPL is an evidence based process where previous, relevant work experience aka ‘prior learning’ is evaluated against the learning outcomes of a particular education or training programme. Usually, this results in partial exemptions from certain modules or parts of a syllabus. Kerry College offers full and complete exemption from the National Tour Guiding programme upon successfully completing the RPL process. Full and complete means you don’t attend any classes. You complete your portfolio of evidence which is assessed, and if successful, you are put forward for the award. But first, you must satisfy the entry criteria. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • All Prior Learning must have been achieved within the last five 5 years. • You are a National Tour Guide with a minimum of 5 years ‘island of Ireland’ tour guiding experience. • You have 5 years’ experience in providing tour management services to visitor groups and tours. • Your regional and national knowledge of Ireland’s geography, tourist product, social and political history is excellent and you can demonstrate this. • You can evidence or prove you have this experience - by way of written testimonials, audio and video recordings, dated itinerary documentation and references from clients, tour management and tour guiding partners you worked with.

WHAT HAPPENS AT INTERVIEW? We have a conversation about your professional background and look to assess if you would make a solid RPL candidate. The interview lasts about 30 minutes. It would help if you provided on paper a basic mapping of how your last 5 years’ experience links to the learning outcomes on the NTG programme. We interview all National Tour Guide applicants at the same time. If unsuccessful at the RPL interview, you have the option of putting your name forward for a place on the taught programme. I HAVE PASSED THE INTERVIEW - WHAT NEXT? Successful applicants are assigned a mentor and given 3 months to submit a completed portfolio. COST There is a small administration fee payable should you pass the recruitment interview.

WHAT IS THE FIRST STEP? If you feel you meet the entry criteria, email your CV to: Admissions Department, Kerry College, admissions@kerrycollege.ie. Your CV will be assessed by our expert panel. If successful, you will be called for interview.

QUALIFICATION FRAMEWORK

The qualification frameworks describe the qualifications of an education system and how they interlink. These frameworks also show how learners can move from one qualification, or qualification level, to another within a system. Over 150 countries are now developing, or have developed, a national qualifications framework. THE IRISH NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS (NFQ)

The Irish NFQ was established in 2003. The NFQ is a framework through which all learning achievements may be measured and related to each other in a coherent way. Qualifications are organised within the NFQ based on their level of knowledge, skill and competence. There are many different types and sizes of qualifications included in the NFQ and because all qualifications included in the NFQ are quality assured, you can have confidence that they will be recognised at home and abroad. Find out more at www.qqi.ie

QUALITY AND QUALIFICATIONS IRELAND (QQI)

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) has responsibility to develop, promote and maintain the Irish NFQ. QQI also facilitates the recognition of foreign qualifications. Find out more at www.qqi.ie

THE EUROPEAN QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK (EQF)

The EQF is an overarching framework that links the qualifications frameworks of different European countries together. It covers qualifications at all levels and in all sub-systems of education and training (general and adult education, vocational education and training as well as higher education). The EQF supports individual mobility and lifelong learning, helping those moving from one country to another to work, or to continue their education or training.
