KROC Dear Kroc Family Even though it doesn’t quite feel like Spring as I draft this letter it is excit ing to know that the most beautiful time of the year is fast approaching. I love to see the bluebonnets and other wild flowers in bloom with families gathered roun d to capture pictures they will cherish forever. As a child growing up in Galvesto n I always looked forward to this time of year because I knew the beaches would once agai n be filled with people from all over the United States escaping to our tiny island for fun in the sun. Here in Kerrville our resid ents find fun in the sun right here at the Kroc Center now that the pool s and waterpark are open for family entertainmen t and birthday parties. Spring also brings to mind thoughts

of newness and renewal as leaves

the annual winter shedding. And speaking of shedding , our membership has increased dram atically over the last two months as we all try to shed the extra weight gained durin g the holidays. Classes have neve r been fuller than in the month of February when nearly 3000 men and women took part in the more than 75 group exerc ise classes offered weekly. It is excit ing to see fifty people dancing and laughing as they exercise to fun Latin beats in Zum ba class and to see members com pete with intense passion as they play pickle ball in the gym. Great things are happenin g at the Kroc Center.

Exercise Compassion - The Kroc Center Story

When you join the Kerrville Kroc Center, you’re not only exercising your body, you’re exercising compassion by helping The Salvation Army meet the needs of young people and families right here in the Hill Country. In 1998, Mrs. Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, donated $90 million to The Salvation Army to build a comprehensive community center in San Diego, California. Her goal was to create a center, supported in part by the community, where children and families would be exposed to different people, activities and arts that would otherwise be beyond their reach. When Mrs. Kroc passed away in October 2003, she left $1.5 billion - much of her estate - to The Salvation Army. This marked the largest single gift given to any single charity at one time. The gift was specifically designated to build a series of state-of-the-art Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers nationwide, patterned after the San Diego center. No other U.S. charity – faith-based or otherwise – has ever undertaken such a sweeping construction effort with the potential to impact millions of people. This year, a total of 27 centers will be finished nationwide, completing the 10 year construction project. Kerrville’s Kroc Center opened its doors in November of 2010, and is the only center in Texas. Operating costs for the center are funded by sales of memberships, rentals, and events. Donations made to The Salvation Army continue to solely fund Social Service programs and outreach. In keeping with Joan Kroc’s vision, the Center is a place where all members of our community – young and old – can come together like never before, transforming countless lives in the process. T.E.A.M. Training Program

Would you love to hire a private personal trainer, but don’t have the budget? We now offer small-group (3-4 people minimum/maximum), semi-private personal fitness training pods at affordable prices. Join two or three other friends and a personal trainer who will lead each of you through a semicustomized or “themed” workout program! Each participant undergoes a Basic Fitness Assessment and Functional Movement Screen, and a one-hour, small-group workout. You pay as you go, and have the choice of scheduling as many, or as few workouts as you wish! No long-term commitments or extended contracts required! Let one of our friendly Fitness & Sports Technicians guide you through this orientation & overview of our fitness facility and exercise equipment. You will also learn about our fitness center rules & proper gym etiquette, as well as receive Personal Trainer-authored information on strength training, cardiovascular exercise, flexibility, proper exercise intensity, nutrition and even goal setting! Basic Fitness Assessment & Functional Movement Screen

A fitness professional can help determine your body composition (the percentage of lean tissue and body fat), body mass index (BMI), waistto-hip ratio (WHR), circumference measurements, balance ability, and muscular strength & endurance, as well as perform the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), which includes seven functional tests that assess overall mobility and stability. This information can be useful in developing a customized personal fitness program, and assists in setting attainable fitness goals. Please see the Fitness Dept. office to make an appointment. Our child watch program is a fun and safe environment for children ages 1-6 years old. Parents can utilize the facility while their kids are fully supervised. Fitness - Group Exercise Ab-Ripper

A 30-minute intense workout focusing on strengthening & stabilizing the core muscles of the abs and lower back. Learn how to work all the abdominal muscles and how to use them to brace your back… then go for that lean, ripped, six-pack look!

Afterburn

Take your workouts to the next level! AFTERBURN is a bootcamp-style class that takes a “High-Intensity Interval Training” (HIIT) approach. HIIT gives you more calorie burn, more fat loss, and stronger cardiovascular fitness in LESS time! A total body workout that will increase your metabolism and burn more calories for up to 24 hours, leaving you feeling the effects of the AFTERBURN!

Cardio Kickboxing

A total body workout featuring a combination of aerobics, boxing, and martial arts. Burn 500-800 calories while improving strength, aerobic fitness, flexibility, coordination, and balance!

Core Power

A total body workout with an emphasis on abs and lower back. Combines techniques used in Pilates and Yoga with great exercise flow and upbeat music. Strengthen your core, make your muscles long and lean, enhance your balance and feel great!

Blitz is the ultimate challenge! It provides a tough, full body workout similar to a combo of the ever-popular “as seen on TV” workouts of P90X and Insanity (plus our own fun additions) into one sweat-drenched, highly challenging, “burn it to earn it” hour of pure physical intensity! Want to lose that extra flab and get ripped? Are you ready for the workout of your life? If so, Blitz is challenging YOU. Advanced class, not recommended for beginners.

BODYSculpt

The perfect class for that busy schedule! This 40-minute, full-body, strengthening & toning class is designed to sculpt long, lean, cut muscles without adding bulk or mass. Weights, cardio & abs… all in a quick 40 minutes!

Group cycle training that targets cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Follow imaginary courses as you adjust the bike’s tension level and speed. Have fun and burn 400-500 calories in a fast-paced, sweat-soaked, energizing blast! Limited to the first 17 students each session, so get there early!

Low Impact Aerobics

A fitness center CLASSIC! Basic and advanced dance-style moves designed to stimulate cardiovascular endurance and burn away those unwanted calories! Perfect for working adults! Have fun in “the original” group exercise class!

PUMP!

Group strength training using dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls, stability balls, resistance tubing, steps and your own body weight. Learn proper form for your full-body, freeweight workouts while working to exhaustion and having fun in a muscletoning, strength-building, calorieburning, energizing and informative class!

quicksilver: Balance, Strength & Fall Prevention for Seniors

Need proper strength, stability, balance and coordination to prevent falls and stay on your feet? Then THIS is the class for you! Learn how to stabilize and balance while using full-body strength, core strength and body positioning techniques. Specifically designed for mature adults and their unique balance & strength needs, this class could be a life (or hip) saver! Non-member seniors can pay a $7 Entrance Fee for full access -OR- $6 for access only to this class.

Step Aerobics

A fun class targeting aerobic conditioning, coordination and movement skill using single and double steps, set to an uplifting and inspiring musical tempo!

Stretching 101

This relaxing and restorative class involves deep, relaxing breathing, combined with deep stretching. Props may be used to facilitate a deeper stretch. No experience in yoga or Pilates is required for this class. All classes are 30 minutes in length. www.kerrvillekroc.org

A high-energy, high-intensity, lunchtime bootcamp designed to slim, tone, energize, revitalize and athleticize! Move through a challenging circuit-training obstacle course that provides a totalbody, complete workout every time! Burn over 500 calories each session! Are YOU up to the challenge?

TRX

One of the hottest new fitness movements around, the TRX Suspension trainer leverages the users bodyweight through hundreds of functional exercises that build strength, balance, flexibility, explosiveness and joint mobility. This class is for beginners that are new to TRX equipment and techniques. TRX is for everyone, not just athletes! Learn how to move with and adjust the TRX for progressive body strengthening. Come and learn how to start slowly for the greatest results! Limited to the first 15 participants.

A 40-minute class aimed at kids ages 7-12. Active group games and fun physical challenges designed to stimulate proper motor development, confidence and teamwork, while encouraging healthy, active movement!

X-FIT Sports CONDITIONING

Do you love sports and the great physical conditioning you obtain from playing them? Then check out X-Fit Sports Conditioning – One of our most popular classes, and the class designed with sports-fitness in mind! Participants have fun while being challenged through a series of strength, agility, speed, quickness, conditioning and skills drills for different sports! Basketball, Soccer, Football, Baseball, Volleyball, and Multi-Sport drills for ages 16 & up.

Yoga

The perfect class for all levels of yoga students, from the beginner to the experienced back-bender. All of the asanas (positions) can be modified to suit your ability or skill level. No prior knowledge of yoga is necessary. Reduce stress, increase strength & flexibility, improve balance and focus, lower blood pressure, and improve circulation.

ZUMBA® Fitness

Burn calories away with a mix of freestyle and hip-hop, Latin/salsa dance moves in this ultra-cool, ultra-fun class sensation that’s sweeping the nation! Tone and sculpt every part of your body in an energizing class that feels more like fun than exercise!

Come join our BOOTCAMP in the water! Various stations isolate muscle groups for maximum fitness. This is an intense, all-out workout designed to tone your body with the added benefits of water resistance. AGES: 10 through Adult

In our most intense water class you’ll jog your way to fitness (and perhaps into a bikini)! This course uses flotation belts to maximize your performance. Classes include weight-bearing warmups, a variety of water exercises, intense in-water jogging and anatomical hangs for full-body toning results and increased stamina. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club members engage in Learning, Character, Leadership, and Spiritual Development, Health and Life Skills, Sports, Fitness, Recreation, and Art. We know how important it is to keep hot weather safety in mind, which is why we also incorporate programming inside our temperature controlled facility. In addition to our After School Program, Day Camp will be available June 3 to August 23 for all kids ages 5-12 during the KISD and Ingram ISD Summer Break from 7:30am – 6:30pm. 40 Developmental Assets® In 2010, The Salvation Army and Search Institute began a partnership known as the Youth Asset Development Initiative (YADI). For phase 1 of the initiative the primary goal of the YADI was to help transform Salvation Army culture from youth programming to more intentional youth development through the building of positive assets. Joining Cub Scouts gives young boys the opportunity to socialize with others their age, form positive relationships with adult mentors and teaches them important life skills. More than just camping, hiking and fishing, Scouts integrates art, culture, and competition with lots of FUN. Youth Programs - Joan B. Kroc Children’s Theater

The Joan B. Kroc Children’s Theater

provides a safe environment where talents, dreams, and aspirations of children can flourish and to reach out to those children who would most benefit from this program. We are dedicated to introducing children in the Texas Hill Country to the whole theater experience. In addition to our drama programs, we will also be sponsoring special events that allow children and adults to showcase their talents together. With new events and activities planned for the future, we are poised to continue offering Hill County children a positive, educational place to explore the theater. The Kroc Children’s Theater offers music and drama classes, as well as full theater productions – all open to the community. Show auditions for Peggy the Pint Sized Pirate will be held May 24th at 6:00pm, and May 25th at 10:00am with productions presented on July 26th and 27th. Children 8-18 are welcome and should come prepared to read from a script. Production fee per participant: $25. Kroc Ed We continue to offer unique educational classes for the community in a variety of areas. New for this season is Still Life With Watercolors and Week of Words! Returning this summer is the Greeting Card Mini Workshop. Check our website or visit our Welcome Desk for additional classes as they become available.

MEET INSTRUCTOR: Jeanne Heise Jeanne earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Bowling Green University in Ohio. She did post graduate work in art History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, completing course work in the Master of Arts program. Jeanne has exhibited her paintings in many national shows including the American Watercolor Society, the Arizona Watercolor association, the Society of Watercolor Artists and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. She has earned signature status in the Southern Watercolor Society, the Texas Watercolor Society, and the Watercolor Art Society-Houston. Jeanne will show you techniques and tools to help you get started or improve your paintings.

A cure for the Dog Days of Summer! Let’s have some fun and paint a beautiful still life in juicy watercolors. Come to the KROC for three afternoons and work with Jeanne Heise to create a luscious and colorful painting. Bring your watercolor supplies and join in the fun. “Week of Words”

Instructor Mary Lee Gowland is the author of three books of poetry, a book of creative writing exercises for children, and a recently published memoir. She has been teaching creative writing to children and adults for over twenty years. “Week of Words” will be a series of quick, fun exercises to improve reading and writing skills. Children will write and share poems and stories each day and on Friday, they will compile their work into a book to take home.

Greeting Card Mini Workshop

Well known instructor Jeanne Heise has been making her own greeting cards for many years. Come and spend an afternoon with her and learn this rewarding craft. It is fun as well as personal and your family and friends will love receiving them too. You will complete 3-4 cards during this course and go home with many more ideas for more.
