What a great year it’s been for the chamber and our community. So much has been accomplished and the chamber has been at the center of so much good work that will impact local businesses and the greater community for years to come.

The chamber is more actively engaged in economic development than ever before, with an enhanced emphasis on business retention and expansion as well as recruitment.

We are eagerly anticipating our 96th Annual Chamber Choice Awards Banquet on Oct. 18 at the Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center. The banquet is sponsored by Centennial Bank — I heard on good authority they are proud to sponsor this pinnacle event. This year’s theme is Boots and Bling — think rhinestone cowboy, Texas chic, etc. It is going to be a lot of fun, so I encourage everyone to get in the spirit and show off their Texas pride.

We do a lot of events at the chamber, but the annual banquet is truly unique and special. For the chamber, it is a time of celebration and reflection on the accomplishments of the past year, an opportunity to meet the new incoming board chairwoman, hear a bit about the challenges and opportunities that lie before us, as well as networking and fellowship opportunities with the largest gathering of fellow members. For the community, the banquet provides a venue to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of some of the best servant leaders in our community.

The awards portion of the program will recognize the Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year and Business Person of the Year, among others.

What better way to promote the highest ideals of citizenship than to publicly recognize those who best exemplify them.

Most of you probably know that our chair-elect is Lisa Winters of Peterson Health. Lisa is an outstanding leader in the community and will no doubt do a great job leading our chamber board in 2019. I am looking forward to introducing Lisa and hearing her speak about her vision for the chamber.

As for me, the banquet signals the beginning of the end of my year as your chairman. It has been an honor and blessing to lead our board. We have a fabulous CEO, an outstanding staff and an amazing, growing membership base. We live in the best community in the world.

The future is bright indeed. Thank you for the honor to serve you.

Peterson Home Care & Hospice Peterson Health welcomed the new Peterson Home Care and Hospice building, 250 Cully Drive, on Sept. 26.

The new 25,000-square-foot office building serves as the office headquarters of Peterson Home Care and Hospice, which has occupied two separate and aging facilities for more than two decades.

The new building and assistance for expanded cardiac and imaging services was made possible by funds raised in a capital campaign that began in winter 2015, which totaled $8.5 million.

Q&A with Ruth Marie Bauer Q: What is your volunteer role with the

A: I’ve been an ambassador since April 2018.

Q: What other organizations have you volunteered with and for how long?

A: I serve on the board of the Kerr County Women’s Chamber; in

charge of pet therapy program at Brookdale Guadalupe River Plaza, Alpine Terrace, Hilltop Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Brookdale Kerrville, Sterling House of Kerrville, Edgewater Care Center and Villagio Senior Living once a month, rotating locations each month; board member for Raphael Free Community Clinic; mission work and ministerial care team at Trinity Baptist Church; volunteer at the Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau; a hunt master for Texas Wildlife Association; and help the Delta Gama alum and San Antonio Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired with an Easter egg hunt for blind children in San Antonio each spring. I also served on the board for Senior Games until they disbanded.

Q: Who inspired you to start volunteering?

A: Rae and Dub Haney inspired me to start volunteering. I had just

moved to Kerrville and had to have surgery on my hand, and Rae was volunteering cutting up fruit and I asked her about it, and she said,“Do you want to help?” and I said “yes.” First thing that happens when you

A: It’s been wonderful. When I came to Kerrville, our home had

burned to the ground and my arm was in a big brace, and Kerrville just opened its arms to me and I thought, “If there was a way that I could give back,” and that’s how I started volunteering.

Q: How is volunteering both rewarding and challenging for you?

A: With the pet therapy — some don’t speak or respond but you put a little dog in their lap and they just start glowing. Being able to give back. With the Raphael Clinic all the good that it does for the community. Having enough time to do it all is a challenge.

Q: In what ways has the chamber been a resource for you as a volunteer or getting involved in community service?

A: Calling on new businesses, part of my ambassador job, learning about what they do and seeing if I can assist them.

Q: When not volunteering, where do you work or spend your time?

A: I live out in the country and have right at 19 acres, and we hunt, as well as entertain people and my family who come and hunt, lots of friends from San Antonio who come in from time to time, taking care of my property, real active in my church and a patron for the Symphony of the Hills. I retired from teaching in San Antonio.

The city’s population is 24,000 and Kerr County hovers around 50,000, the area strongly supports dozens of dine in, take out and walk-up eateries. The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce lists 67 restaurants and dining outlets as members.

It encourages the community to visit (or revisit) them all, including these foodie favorites listed below.

1011 Bistro For special occasions, out-of-town guests, a romantic evening or simply as a connoisseur of fine meals, whenever you crave top-notch cuisine, head to this trendy bistro at 1011 Guadalupe St., which is promoted as “the closest restaurant to the Guadalupe River,” according to Tomas Valdez, owner/manager since 2013.

Whether choosing terrace dining, which seats 20, or opting for inside, which seats 58, the river view is superb.

Expect exceptional meals, impeccable service and beautiful

presentations, all hallmarks of 1011 Bistro’s success.

“We don’t skimp on quality,” Tomas said of menu choices that include tender steaks, succulent seafood, duck, lamb and vegetarian options.

A Kerrville favorite is the fork-tender almond panko-crusted sea bass, served with Chinese black rice, roasted carrots and orange butter. Oenophiles can choose among numerous domestic or imported reds and whites. A special enticement on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays is the Bring Your Own Bottle of wine option.

Anyone hanging out for an hour here will get the essence of what Kerrville is all about.

When a newbie brewpub racks up accolades, including being named one of Travel + Leisure’s Best Local Breweries in the U.S. and listed as one of Texas Monthly’s 20 favorite Texas Brewpubs, it’s obviously doing something right, and Kerrville’s Pint and Plow Brewing Company, which opened in April 2016 at 332 Clay St., is doing just that.

Jeremy Walther, co-founder and operating partner said that although the original vision for this craft brewery and lightfare restaurant was always geared toward families, today, it enjoys a mixed clientele. Expect to see students, business people, couples and families co-mingling at outside picnic tables, little kids happily decorating the sidewalk with chalk art and canine family members settled quietly under a table.

Others enjoy comfortable inside dining, while others trek to the cozy coffee bar or grab a fast take-out order.

Menu offerings include a variety of freshly-made soups, salads, sandwiches and pizza, creations of Chef Jeff Blakely who incorporates locally-sourced ingredients and organic foods whenever possible.

Once the three operating partners — two of which are Tivy High School graduates — literally tested the waters of the Guadalupe and mastered the technique of processing its waters into five full-bodied specialty beers, they knew they’d found a niche needed in Kerrville. Since the doors opened, they never looked back.

Jeremy said they are proud to be members of the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Margarita’s City Mexican Restaurant Sizzling fajitas, overstuffed tacos and flavorful enchiladas, quesadillas and burritos are among the dozens of menu selections at this family-friendly restaurant located on the

former Dairy Queen site, near the entrance ramp of I-10 at 2141 Sidney Baker St. Manager Luis Melendez said treasured family recipes appear on his menu sourced from those who have been in the restaurant business for years.

Since opening on Sept. 6, 2017, a steady flow of customers from I-10 traffic, hotel overnighters and locals enjoy wellpriced meals and generous portions served in a clean and cheery South-of-the-Border setting. Go here for hearty breakfasts, lunches and dinners, and try the Kerrville favorite, “Sky Bowl,” with grilled chicken, beef and shrimp smothered with melted cheese served up with zesty pico de gallo and freshly-made tortillas.

Luis mentions that Kerrville locals who “love their margaritas” also flock here for Happy Hour.

A dozen thirst-quenching varieties appear on the menu, including the very refreshing Cucumber Margarita.

Luis, whose father runs El Sombrero de Jalisco, said family is paramount to their success, and close and distant relatives work in various areas of both businesses, including his wife, Natalia, mother to their 1-year-old daughter, Janet, and 2-year-old son, Lorenzo.

Luis is a strong advocate for the chamber.

“I think of the chamber as the voice of the community. We are grateful for their support and that of the wonderful people of Kerrville,” he said.

A: And away we go! Class No. 34 begins

Photos and story by Michael Anglin On Thursday, Sept. 13, Leadership Kerr County alumni from the past 33 years welcomed the LKC Class No. 34 at a reception in their honor, hosted by Security State Bank and Trust.

The reception was a great time for the new class members to meet each other, and a wonderful time for alumni to congratulate the new leaders and share their LKC experiences with the new class. At the end of the reception, the class received information from the steering committee about their kickoff retreat.

The retreat was Sept. 19-20 at the beautiful Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly in Hunt. This was a great time for the class to get to know each other, learn and laugh. This group really came together as a team as they were put through many challenges, team-building games and a low ropes course. The class also started planning their team project, EasterFest 2019, where they created their committees and

began planning the yearly event. No doubt they will make it the best event ever.

Beginning Oct. 16, the class will start its monthly sessions, meeting the third Tuesday of every month, and ending in May with a graduation from the program. Keep an eye out for the blue shirts, as they make their way around many Kerrville locations each month, while meeting and learning from the people leading the city and its many businesses.

About LKC The Leadership Kerr County program is offered through the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce. LKC class members grow as leaders and learn what Kerr County is really all about during their monthly classes.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, Katie Milton of Freenew, life and business coaching, will wrap up 2018 with a final CoffeeTalk.

The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce’s Boots and Bling Gala is from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center’s grand ballroom, 1001 Junction Highway. The banquet will begin with cocktails and a photobooth at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner, awards and a drawing, as well as live and silent auctions at 7 p.m.

Valet parking will be available and western chic attire is encouraged, but not required.

The menu will include grilled chef’s cut chicken breast with peach salsa, topped with Gulf shrimp skewers, roasted fingerling potatoes, haricot vert and triple delight cake for dessert.

Guests are encouraged to bring $20 for a chance to win a luxury table with a private server. If their table is drawn, and they’ve paid the $20, table guests will move to a premium table, where everyone will be served Texas raised filet mignon with Gulf shrimp skewers, roasted fingerling potatoes and haricot vert.

The chamber will present the following awards: Business Person of the Year, the Mary C. Williams Memorial Volunteer of the Year and Ambassador of the Year, as well as recognize businesses that have achieved 25 or 50 years of continuous chamber membership. The Kerr County Women’s Chamber will present the Woman of the Year, and The Kerrville Daily Times will present its Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year award.

Individual tickets, or the Brass Buckle, are $75.

The event is open to the public.

Community Shred Day slated Nov. 2 Story by Angela North | Photo by Tom Holden The Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce will host a Community Shred Day from 8 to 11 a.m. , or until the truck is full, on Friday, Nov. 2 in the River Hills Mall parking lot behind Belk, off Cully Drive.

Anyone who wishes to participate can drop off papers that need to be shredded. KACOC members get the first two boxes free, and each additional box is $5, while non-members must pay $5 per box with a maximum of 10 boxes.

Sponsors include Republic Services, Condor Document Services and the River Hills Mall, but the chamber is still looking for a major sponsor for this event.
